They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or Spanish to babies of English speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4montholds gazed mostly into her eyes. The 6montholds spent equal amounts of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8and 10montholds stud ied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started changing back toward the speaker's eyes. But what happened when these babies accustomed to English heard Spanish? The 12montholds studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to recognize the unfamiliar sounds. That fits with research into bilingualism (双语) that shows babies' brains adjust themselves to distinguishing the sounds of their native language over other languages in the first year of life. The conti nued lipreading shows the 1yearolds clearly still are fit for learning.Babies are so hard to study that this is “a fairly heroic data set”,says Duke University cognitive neuroscientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so fascinating that he wants to know more.语篇解读本文是一篇说明文。

2019高考全程复习方略英语一轮复习课时作业:1.4 Earthquakes Word版含解析

课时作业(四)必修1Unit 4EarthquakesⅠ.阅读理解A(2018·湖南六校联考)After the earthquake had stopped, when the rescuers reached the ruins of a young woman's house, they saw her dead body through the cracks. But her pose was somehow strange that she knelt on her knees like a person was worshipping(礼拜); her body was leaning forward, and her two hands were supported by an object. The collapsed house had crashed her back and her head. With so many difficulties, the leader of the rescue team put his hand through a narrow gap on the wall to reach the woman's body. He was hoping that this woman could be still alive. However, the cold and stiff body told him that she had passed away for sure.He and the rest of the team left this house and were going to search the next collapsed building. For some reasons, the team leader was driven by a compelling force to go back to the ruined house of the dead woman. Again, he knelt down and used his hand through the narrow cracks to search the little space under the dead body. Suddenly, he screamed with excitement,“A child! There is a child!”The whole team worked together; carefully they removed the piles of ruined objects around the dead woman. There was a 3-month-old little boy wrapped in a flowery blanket under his mother's dead body. Obviously, the woman had made a sacrifice for saving her son. When her house was falling, she used her body to make a cover to protect her son. The little boy was still sleeping peacefully when the team leader picked him up.The medical doctor came quickly to examine the little boy. After he opened the blanket, he saw a cell phone. There was a text message on the screen. It said, “If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.”This cell phone was passed around from one hand to another. Everybody that read the message wept. “If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.” Such is the mother's love for her child!【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。

The study reveals that in cultures where emotional control is the standard, such as Japan, focus is placed on the eyes to interpret emotions. Whereas in cultures where emotion is openly expressed, such as the United States, the focus is on the mouth to interpret emotion.“These findings go against the popular theory that the facial expressions of basic emotions can be universally recognized,”said University of Alberta researcher Dr Takahiko Masuda. “A person's culture plays a very strong role in determining how they will read emotions and needs to be considered when interpreting facial expressions.”These cultural differences are even noticeable in computer emotions(情感符号), which are used to convey a writer's emotions over email and text message. The Japanese emotions for happiness and sadness vary in terms of how the eyes are drawn, while American emotions vary with the direction of the mouth. In the United States the emotions:)and:-)show a happy face, whereas the emotions:(or:-(show a sad face. However, Japanese tend to use the symbol(∧∧)to indicate a happy face, and(; _;)to indicate a sad face.“We think it is quite interesting and appropriate that a culture tends to mask its emotions. The Japanese would focus on a person's eyes when determining emotions,as eyes tend to be quite subtle(微妙的),”said Masuda.“In the United States, where open emotion is quite common, it makes sense to focus on the mouth, which is the most expressive feature on a person's face.”36.The text mainly tells us that ________.A.cultural differences are expressed in emotionsB.culture is the key to interpreting facial emotionsC.different emotions are preferred in different culturesD.people from different cultures express emotions differently37.Which emotion is used by Americans to show a happy face?A.(; _; )B.:-)C.:-(D.:(38.If a Japanese wants to detect whether a smile is true or false, he will probably ________.A.read the whole face B.focus on the mouthC.look into the eyes D.judge by the voiceⅣ.单词拼写根据下列各句句意和空白之后的汉语提示词,在横线上写出对应单词的正确、完整形式,每空只写一词。

In a sense, I guess we all live that way, each and every day. But as I read this book, I get the feeling that only hospice patients really know this. Sometimes I realize it, like when I am faced with a choice to work more to earn more money or to go to spend the day with a loved one and earn no money. On the one hand, money, income, rent. On the other hand, love, connection, moments that make life feel like worth living for.Near the end of “On Living”Egan shares a story about a patient called Linda. Events from decades past were preserved in her mind like precious heirlooms(传家宝),but a new face could be forgotten in as little time as it took to leave the room and return again.Linda said that she spent her days trying to be caring. She shared: We shower so much love on babies and children. But as we grow up, it stops. No one showers love on grownups. Life gets harder, not easier, but we stop loving each other so much, just when we need love most. She then went on to say; “One day, when I was lying here, I realized how old God is. He is so old. He must need so much love. People are always demanding so much from him, but who is there to shower him with love? So I thought that was something I could do. That's what I do all day: I try to love G od...I can lie here and love God and maybe it will help him.”This is the kind of story that I find impossibly inspiring and provides great impetus for me to make a change. Luckily, I read it on one of the former days and it made me realize that there is always a way to help. There is always something we can do. We don't have to be brave, ablebodied or even of particularly sound(健全的)mind to contribute to the good. We can be caring. We can love. We can be the very love that we need.1.According to the author, most people ________.A.give up love to earn income or moneyB.seldom go to care for hospice patientsC.are faced with a very difficult choice in lifeD.ignore the fact that life is short and precious2.Linda talked about God to indicate that ________.A.all people should love GodB.God teaches us to love all peopleC.the older one is, the more he/she needs loveD.only hospice patients know they should love God3.What does the underlined word “impetus”mean?A.Convenience. B.Motivation.C.Chances. D.Suggestions.4.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?A.Kindness is always the strongest power.B.We can make a great difference to others.C.We should be brave enough to love others.D.Whatever kind of person we are, we can be caring.答案与解析本文属于哲理性文章。

课时提升作业十九必修4Unit 4Body language(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解ACrossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason for this is that the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart and that crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but repeated, drawn-out increases in blood pressure can cause long-term health issues. So, planning to sit for a long period of time? Don’t keep yo ur legs crossed.Crossing your legs at the knee can also cause pressure on the major nerve in your leg that passes just below your knee and along the outside of your leg, explains Richard Graves, a medical expert. This pressure can cause numbness andtemporary paralysis (麻痹) of some of the muscles in your foot and leg, preventing you from being able to raise your ankle—what we know as that “pins and needles” sensation. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.【文章大意】本文主要是告诉读者交叉双腿的危害并给读者一些建议。

Ⅱ.阅读理解AThe state of Colorado has four of the 58 national parks in the United States. These have been judged the best places of all the national parks.Black Canyon (峡谷) of the Gunnison National ParkThis park lies in western Colorado and offers the most impressive views from up in the mountains into the canyons below. While exploring the canyons, you will find that the walls drop nearly straight down into very narrow valleys with snake-like rivers below. Visitors are offered more than 100 camping sites, and a lot of bird species and many animals are native to the area.Rocky Mountain National ParkIt is the only national park in the north central region in the state of Colorado. With 359 miles of trails for hiking, there are a lot of places for camping, horseback riding and just enjoying the sights of nature.Mesa Verde National ParkThis is probably the most interesting of all the national parks, offering an extremely interesting trip back in time to 600 A.D. up to 1300 A.D. This park was declared (宣布) a protected national park in 1906 because of the cliff dwellings (住人的崖洞) that were found throughout the park area, which was once home to American Indians. Visitors can actually walk through these dwellings, and they may imagine what each room may have been used for so many years ago.Great Sand Dunes (沙丘) National ParkThe Great Sand Dunes National Park lies in south central Colorado, about 127 miles from Pueblo. This park has the tallest sand dunes in all of North America, with trails for hiking.
