In the Maldives, at the heart of the Indian Ocean, scores of turtles are being found with wounded flippers （脚蹼）and deep scars in their shells．The cause is clear the turtles are becoming trapped in “ghost” fishing nets that have either been lost or abandoned．
The turtles that don’t drown are then attacked merc ilessly by accomplices （共犯）．The injuries of the turtles’ flippers show clear signs of being bitten off by sharks, while the shell damage points to a sharp instrument the beaks of birds and the claws of crabs．The nets themselves cut through the turtle’s fle sh, leaving deep wounds．But what the investigators have not yet found is the culprits （元凶）behind the crime and the motive．“It’s OK to keep finding these turtles and keep sewing them up, but it’s just going to keep happening．So we need to try to find
out why the nets are being lost,” says Dr Jill Hudgins, a scientist from the Seamarc consultancy．
The turtles are the Olive Ridley variety which live in the open ocean and Maldivian fishermen don’t use nets, which points the investigation abr oad．Hudgins’ team has now made a database of more than 40 net types, detailing the net size and the thread diameter．
A recent breakthrough found a net manufacturer’s label Garware, an Indian company．Hudgins has now sent images of the nets and severely injured turtles to the company and awaits their reply．“We want to scare them a bit,” she says, “and then get their help in finding solutions．”
If it is because the fishermen do not have access to disposal facilities, she says, that could be set up．Or if boats fishing illegally deserted nets when challenged by patrols at sea, that could be addressed too．Hudgins’ team has also hooked up with Ghost Nets Australia, which successfully tracked nets back to fishermen in northern Australia．

This April, my high school became the subject of a wave of media covering about female leadership on campus．Although the topic on gender and leadership started many years ago, only four women were ever elected president of the student union in forty years．
It was with that in mind that two teacher advisors decided to organize a sleepover （聚会）for students．With senior girls as hosts, the sleepover would be a safe place where we could ask questions about gender, share experiences and inspire each to speak up．Four years ago, as
a freshman, I attended a similar sleepover — organized by the same advisors．
We seniors arrived first to organize the party and we were anxious about the younger girls’ beha viour．What if they didn’t have fun? What if they hated the topics at hand? My worries disappeared when we sat down to listen to the talk given by Sheryl Sandberg．
As Sheryl talked about the lack of female leadership nearly everywhere in the world, I sensed a change in many of the younger attendants．We took turns in sharing our experiences, and I listened to their talks about once gender gave them different expectations．We discussed the problems so heatedly that all of us forgot time —until Ms．Sykes, our advisor, told us it was midnight, then we ended our party．

Take a moment to imagine a world without Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Mary Poppins, or Donald Duck．Imagine watching TV without being able to hear what each character is saying as he or she talks．If it weren’t fo r the creativity of Walt Disney and the foundation of The Walt Disney Company, these characters and technical innovations （创新）would not exist today．
The theme of the exhibit Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, which will open this month at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is the life and work of Walt Disney．
Through a display of more than 300 rarely seen objects, the exhibit will trace Disney’s journey from his birth in Chicago to his first animation （动画片）film．By showing various artifacts （工艺品）from different Disney eras, the Museum of Science and Industry hopes to look back on Disney’s history and remind visitors of their experiences with Disney’s characters, films, and theme parks．
