Next week I’m travelling to Australia to visit a friend there over the school holidays. I plan to keep this blog to record my experiences and what I learn. I have already done some research on the country. Located to the south of the equator, below many other countries on the globe,it’s often informally referred to as“down under”.

I have also read about some iconic sites, such as the Sydney Opera House and the Great Ocean Road, and animals like the cute koalas and kangaroos. I can’t wait to see all of them! However,as I major in social studies,I’m more interested in meeting people in Australia and experiencing their culture, food, and way of life.

Homestay,

Homestay,

It's like being wrapped up in a warm hug, but even better! That's how I felt when I started at my new school this year.On the first day, I was a little bit nervous walking through the big doors into the hallway filled with lockers and kids rushing around. Everything seemed so big and loud and overwhelming. My tummy was doing flips and I was clutching my new backpack tightly. What if I got lost? What if the other kids were mean? What if I didn't make any friends? But then I saw a group of fifth graders wearing bright green vests. They were the student ambassadors! One of the girls, Emily, came right over and introduced herself with a huge smile. "Hi, you must be new! I'm Emily and I'm here to be your buddy today and show you around."Suddenly, all my worries melted away. Emily looped her arm through mine and we set off down the hallway. She showed me the cafeteria ("The pizza is my favorite but the cookies are amazing too!"), the library ("My best friend Tara and I love reading here at lunch."), the gym ("We just had an awesome pep rally to get excited for the basketball season!"), and of course my homeroom classroom. As we walked, Emily kept chatting away, explaining everything and making me laugh with her funny stories. It was like she was an old friend instead of someone I had just met five minutes ago. By the time the bell rang for first period, I had already gotten a mini-tour, the inside scoop on all the best hangouts, and a feel for the awesome spirit of my new school. In my first class, math, the teacher Ms. Allen immediately came over and introduced herself. "You must be our new student Michael! We're so excited to have you join us." She gave me a warm smile and I could tell she really meant it. The other kids started introducing themselves too, leaning over and giving me fist bumps or high fives. "Hey Michael, I'm Jack. You're gonna love it here!"At lunch, Emily came and found me again. "Come sit with me and my friends today!" she said, leading me over to a table full ofsmiling faces. They all shook my hand and within five minutes I was laughing along as they reminisced about the amazing potluck their families did last month for Heritage Night. "You have to come next year, Michael! Your family makes the best food."As the day went on, I kept getting that same awesome feeling over and over again. In science, we had to pair up for a lab and Timothy immediately asked to be my partner. "My dad's a scientist and he's gonna help us crush this experiment," he told me with a big grin. At recess, a group of kids were playing basketball and waved me over to join their team. "We can use another scorer like you on our squad," one of them said, tossing me the ball. Even the custodian Mr. John stopped to shake my hand and welcome me!By the end of the day, my face seriously hurt from smiling so much. I couldn't believe how amazing everyone had been - how friendly, how welcoming, how determined to make sure I felt completely at home from the very first minute I stepped through those doors. As I walked out to meet my mom, I looked back at the school with a deep feeling of happiness and gratitude. This place already felt like a second home. These people - my new teachers, my new principal, all my new friends - they alreadyfelt like family. And I knew that from now on, every single day when I came to school I would get that same incredible feeling of being welcomed and loved and cared about. Like I really and truly belonged. What a warm, special, amazing feeling that is! If you've ever experienced that feeling, you know how lucky we are. And if you haven't yet, just wait - it could be just around the corner, waiting to wrap you up in the biggest, coziest, most wonderful welcome hug of all. I can't wait to feel it again tomorrow!篇2Home Away From HomeWhen I first heard that my family would be moving to a new city, I felt a mix of emotions. On one hand, I was excited about the prospect of new adventures and making new friends. But on the other hand, I was anxious about leaving behind everything and everyone I knew. Would I be able to fit in at my new school? Would the kids be nice to me? These thoughts kept swirling in my mind as the moving day drew closer. The long drive to our new home seemed to stretch on forever. As we pulled up to the house, I couldn't help but feel a little bit homesick already. This place looked so unfamiliar, and Imissed the comfort of my old neighborhood. Mom and Dad tried to reassure me, but I still felt uneasy. The first few days were tough. Everything was different – the streets, the shops, even the way people talked. I felt like a fish out of water, struggling to find my place in this new environment. At school, I stuck close to the few friendly faces I had met, too shy to branch out and make new friends. But then, something amazing happened. One day during recess, a group of kids invited me to join their game of tag. At first, I hesitated, but they insisted, and before I knew it, we were all running around, laughing and having a blast. That simple act of kindness and inclusion made me feel so much better. From that day on, things started to change. The more I put myself out there, the more I realized that people were genuinely nice and welcoming. My classmates helped me catch up on the lessons I had missed, and even invited me to their birthday parties. The teachers went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable and supported. It wasn't just at school, either. Our new neighbors brought over homemade cookies and introduced themselves. The local shopkeepers always greeted me with a warm smile. Slowly but surely, this unfamiliar place started to feel like home. One of my favorite memories from those early days was when my family went to the community center for a potluck dinner. We didn't know many people, but as soon as we walked in, we were welcomed with open arms. People introduced themselves, asked about our interests, and made sure we had plenty to eat. By the end of the night, I had made a few new friends, and my parents had exchanged contact information with several families. It was moments like those that made me realize how lucky I was to be part of such a warm and welcoming community. Despite being strangers at first, everyone went out of their way to make us feel at home.Looking back, I can't believe how worried I was about fitting in. This place that once felt so foreign has truly become my home away from home. The people here have embraced me with open arms, and I've learned that no matter where you go, there are always good people willing to make you feel welcome. As I continue to grow and experience new things, I know that this sense of belonging will stay with me. It's a reminder that home isn't just a physical place, but a feeling of warmth, acceptance, and community. And no matter where life takes me, I'll always carry that feeling in my heart.篇3Feeling at Home is the Best FeelingMy name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. I love going to my grandma's house because it's the place where I feel most at home and can completely be myself. The second I walk through her front door, I'm hit with the most wonderful, familiar smells - freshly baked cookies, her favorite lavender soap, and something else that I can't quite put my finger on, but smells like pure coziness.Grandma's house just has a certain indescribable feeling about it. It's full of life, laughter, and so many happy memories. My cousins and I have had countless silly dance parties in the living room, whipped up tasty (and sometimes not-so-tasty!) concoctions in the kitchen, and played endless games of Uno and crazy eights at the dining room table until we were breathless from giggling so much. There's just something magical about being at grandma's that makes me feel so content and at peace, like I can let out a deep breath I didn't even know I was holding. Maybe it's because the floors always creak in that same familiar way as I run up the stairs. Or how I know exactly where the creaky fourth step is fromthe top landing so I can jump over it without making a sound when trying to sneak up on someone.Or maybe the magic comes from the sun-filled sitting room where grandma's rocking chair is positioned perfectly in the stream of warm rays. I love curling up on the soft, worn cushion, surrounded by the calming tick-tock of the grandfather clock and the gentle sway of the wind chimes hanging in the window. In that moment, with a book cracked open on my lap, I'm in my own personal paradise. Then there's the screened-in porch, my favorite spot for gazing at the stars on summer nights before drifting off to sleep to the relaxing chirps and trills of the crickets and nighttime critters. No matter what's happening in the world around me, when I'm in that porch swing, gently rocking back and forth, I'm in a whole other universe where my only responsibility is being present.Feeling at home isn't just about the physical place though. It's about the people who make it feel that way. I'm absolutely certain that even if grandma didn't live in the house I've grown up going to, her home would feel just as homey and comforting. She's the one who fills it with endless warmth, kindness, and love that wraps around me like a cozy blanket fresh from the dryer.I can go to grandma with any problem or worry, and she'll listen without judgment and offer the most sage and heartfelt advice. She's even good at helping to solve the silliest of kids' dilemmas, like when I was 6 and desperately needed to come up with a new handshake with my best friend but we were totally stumped on ideas.Grandma is a bottomless well of patience, happy to re-read the same stories, play the same games, or indulge in the same make-believe adventures over and over at my cousins' and my request. No child's dream is too outrageous for her encouragement and willingness to play along, whether we're princesses in a fairytale or world-famous scientists in need of a lab assistant.Being at grandma's is also about feeling safe, secure, and completely free to be as goofy and uninhibited as I please. If I make a mistake or experience failure when I'm there, it's met with a warm hug, words of reassurance, and help to try again. There's zero pressure to be perfect because grandma's love for me is unconditional.I can dance around like a wild banshee in my pajamas, pulling faces until my cheeks ache from smiling so big. I can tell grandma my most ridiculous jokes and ideas without worrying ifthey're dumb, because she always throws her head back with that deep belly laugh of hers that makes me feel like my humor is comedy gold.In grandma's presence, I don't have to hide any parts of my personality or worry about being judged. She loves and celebrates me for being 100% my authentic self, weird quirks and all. And because she篇4Feeling Right at HomeHave you ever gone to a new place and felt totally comfortable and relaxed, like you belonged there? That's the feeling I'm talking about – that warm, cozy, "at home" feeling even when you're not actually home. It's one of the best feelings in the world!I know that feeling well because I felt it recently when I went to my cousin Emma's house for a sleepover. Emma and I are really close even though she lives an hour away, so I was super excited for the sleepover. But I was also a little nervous because I hadn't been to her new house before after her family moved last year. What if her new house didn't feel as welcoming and homey as her old one did?I had nothing to worry about though! From the second I walked through the front door, I could tell this was going to be a fantastic sleepover. Emma's mom gave me a huge hug and said "Welcome! We're so happy you're here!" Their big friendly dog Rufus came barreling over, his tail wagging a million miles an hour. He licked my hand to say hi.The whole house just felt so warm and inviting. It smelled like freshly baked cookies and scented candles. Soft music was playing from the kitchen speakers. The living room was nice and cozy with squashy couches, fluffy blankets, and the big fireplace crackling away. Emma's little brother smiled and waved at me before going back to playing his video game.Everything about the house made me feel so at ease, like I could just plop down on the couch and make myself at home. And that's exactly what Emma and I did! We grabbed some of the freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies her mom had made, poured some cold milk, and settled in for an evening of movies and popcorn and talking and laughing until our tummies hurt. That night when it was time for bed, Emma's room felt just as homey and comfortable as the rest of the house. We put on our cozy pajamas and sleeping bags and made a nest of pillows and blankets on the floor to sleep in. Emma put on her favorite music, the kind we always listen to together. We talked for hours about everything – school, friends, that cute boy in her math class, you name it. When we eventually fell asleep, I felt so peaceful and content, without a single worry in the world. The next morning, we woke up to the most delicious smells wafting from the kitchen – Emma's mom was making her famous French toast and sizzling bacon for breakfast. My mouth was watering before I even got out of my sleeping bag! We raced downstairs in our pajamas, Rufus happily jumping around our feet. Emma's dad was at the table reading the newspaper, drinking coffee. "Morning sleepyheads!" he said with a big smile when we came in.I just felt so at home sitting around that kitchen table with Emma's whole family, digging into the amazing French toast and chatting and laughing together. It was like I was part of their family too. By the time I had to head back home later that morning, I almost didn't want to leave! I wanted to stay in that warm, happy, homey environment forever. That's what I mean by that feeling of being warmly welcomed – that feeling where you're in a new place that instantly feels as comfortable and familiar as your own home. It's such a nice feeling! It makes me feel so relaxed and happy inside. When people go out of their way to make me feel welcome and at home like Emma's family did, it means so much.I think we all crave that feeling sometimes, to be enveloped in a warm, cozy environment where we can let our guard down and just be ourselves, without any fear or stress. It's like being wrapped up in the world's comfiest, softest blanket. Feeling at home in new places with friendly, welcoming people is one of the true joys in life to me.I still remember the first time I ever felt that way, actually. I was just a tiny kid, maybe 5 or 6 years old. We were going over to my aunt and uncle's house for a big family dinner, a house I had never been to before. I was nervous, as kids often can be in new environments. But as soon as my aunt opened the door, I knew it was going to be okay.篇5The Warmest WelcomeI skipped down the path, my backpack bouncing against my back. It was the first day of school after the long summer break, and I couldn't wait to see all my friends again! As I approached the big wooden doors of my elementary school, a huge smile spread across my face. This place felt like a second home to me.Before I could even reach for the door handle, it swung open, and there stood Mrs. Williams, the school secretary. Her kind eyes crinkled at the corners as she beamed at me. "Well, if it isn't Michael! Welcome back, dear!" she exclaimed, pulling me into a warm hug.I hugged her back tightly, breathing in the comforting scent of her flowery perfume that always reminded me of my grandma's garden. "Hi Mrs. Williams! I missed you!" I said as we pulled apart."I missed you too, sweetheart. My, you've grown so much over the summer!" She ruffled my hair affectionately. "Now, run along to class. I'm sure your teacher and all your little friends can't wait to see you!"Grinning from ear to ear, I scampered down the hall, my sneakers squeaking against the shiny tiled floors. I passed by the library, waving to Mrs. Rodriguez, the librarian, as she reshelved books. She gave me a warm smile and a little wave in return. The closer I got to my classroom, the more excited I became.I could hear the cheerful voices of my classmates chattering away. As I reached the door, I took a deep breath and pushed it open."Michael!" My best friend Jacob was the first to spot me. He jumped up from his desk and ran over, wrapping me in a tight bear hug. Soon, the rest of the class swarmed around me, patting my back and ruffling my hair, all talking at once."We missed you, Michael!""Did you have an awesome summer?""You'll never believe what I did during break!"I just laughed and tried my best to hug them all back. After a minute, our teacher, Mrs. Thompson, clapped her hands together. "Alright, alright, everyone back to their seats! We'll have plenty of time to catch up, but for now, let's get started with our first lesson."We all groaned in unison, but obediently took our places. Once we were settled, Mrs. Thompson smiled warmly at me. "Welcome back, Michael. We're so happy to have you with us again this year."I felt a warm glow in my chest as I looked around at my classmates' friendly, smiling faces. No matter how long I was away, coming back here always felt like coming home. This was my second family, the people who knew me best and cared about me no matter what. I was finally back where I belonged.Over the next few weeks, that feeling of being truly welcomed and cared for never faded. Any time I walked into the cafeteria, the kind lunch ladies would greet me by name and slip me an extra cookie or two. The janitor, Mr. Evans, wouldhigh-five me whenever we passed in the halls. And of course, all my teachers made me feel appreciated and valued every single day.But it wasn't just the staff that made me feel so at home—it was my fellow students too. We all supported each other, through good times and bad. When I struggled with a tough math concept, my friends would patiently explain it to me over and over until I understood. When Jacob's dog passed away, we all gathered around him with hugs and kind words. We were there for each other no matter what, just like a real family would be.My school was so much more than just a place to learn; it was a loving, supportive community. Every time I walked through those doors, I knew I was entering a safe haven, a second home where I was surrounded by people who genuinely cared about my well-being. No matter what was going on in my life, as long as I was at school, I had my teachers, my friends, and a endless supply of warmth, kindness, and encouragement.I often heard grownups complaining about their schools being cold, unfriendly places. But my experience couldn't have been more different. To me, my elementary school was the coziest, most welcoming place in the world. It was a true home away from home, filled with more love, laughter, and happy memories than I could possibly count. I knew I was blessed to have such an incredible school community supporting me every step of the way.篇6Feeling Right at HomeHave you ever gone somewhere new and felt totally out of place? Like you just didn't belong there at all? I used to feel that way a lot when I was younger. Whenever my family would go visit relatives or friends in a different city, I always felt like a fish out of water. The houses smelled different, the rooms looked different, and I never knew where anything was. It was uncomfortable and awkward. But then something changed when I started going to my grandparents' house for summer vacations. At first, it was just as unfamiliar as any other place. Their big old farmhouse out in the country was nothing like our little house in the suburbs. And mygrandparents were....well, let's just say they were a bit eccentric! Grandpa always wore overalls and mud boots, even inside. And Grandma had this weird habit of feeding the birds right out of her hand. It was all very strange to me.After a few days though, I started to get used to their funny little ways. In fact, I started to enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of their place. The creaky hardwood floors, the quilts on the beds that smelled like laundry detergent, and the buzzing of the bees in Grandma's flower garden out back - it all became so familiar and comfortable. Before I knew it, I felt completely at home there. That first summer, I spent hours and hours exploring their big rambling house and the acres of land surrounding it. I made friends with the horses in the pasture and the playful barn cats. I even got used to the musty smell of the ancient books and keepsakes packed into Grandpa's study. Every nook and cranny held some new wonder or adventure for me. I could be myself and nobody thought I was weird or strange.Mealtimes were always fun too. We'd all gather around the huge kitchen table and dig into whatever delicious food Grandma had cooked up that day. She could make even the most basic meal of beans and cornbread taste like a feast. As weate, Grandpa would tell us tall tales about his childhood that had us all laughing until we cried. The bond between us grew stronger with each shared meal. After dinner, we'd head out to the porch to watch the sun go down. We'd settle into the creaky old rocking chairs and Grandpa would point out the different constellations twinkling in the night sky. Sometimes, Grandma would break out her guitar and we'd have an old-fashioned sing-along. Those were moments I'll never forget - feeling completely relaxed,worry-free, and surrounded by the people I loved most.As the weeks went by, I became more and more comfortable at my grandparents' house. I had my own special spot on the couch to read books. I knew exactly which cupboard held the best snacks. I could easily find my way around without getting lost or turned around. It might have been their house, but it felt just as much like my home. A place where I truly belonged. Those endless summer days were some of the happiest of my childhood. Part of that was due to all the fun adventures - going fishing in the creek, putting on backyard talent shows, and roasting marshmallows around the fire pit. But an even bigger part was simply because I felt so cozy, comfortable, and secure inthat place. Like everything was totally okay and right with the world. My grandparents have been gone for several years now, but I still feel that same warm, fuzzy feeling whenever I go back to their house. As soon as I pull into the driveway and see that old porch swing gently swaying in the breeze, a sense of peace just washes over me. All my worries and stress from the outside world seem to disappear. I'm home. That feeling of being at home isn't just about the physical place, but the emotions tied to it. The security, the belonging, the cherished memories. It's a sanctuary, a refuge from all of life's ups and downs. A safe haven where you can exhale and be yourself without judgment. As an adult now, I realize just how fortunate I was to have such a special place growing up that felt like home away from home. Not everyone is so lucky to have a beloved home base beyond their parents' house. A cozy little world all their own to escape to when needed. That farmhouse may not have been much to look at from the outside, but on the inside it was filled with more warmth, love, and joy than you could ever imagine. So while my grandparents' home may be gone now, the feeling of home lives on inside me. I carry those treasuredmemories and emotions with me wherever I go. That deep sense of comfort, contentment, and acceptance is something that can never be taken away. Home isn't necessarily a physical place, but a state of mind and heart that stays with you forever. And someday, when I have my own home and family, I hope to recreate that same wonderful feeling of home for my children.A place overflowing with love, laughter, and special traditions. Where they always feel safe, cared for, and free to be themselves. Just like I did all those wonderful summers long ago. Because that feeling of being at home - of truly belonging somewhere - is one of the greatest gifts you can give.。

I'm really grateful that you gave me a place to stay. You've made me feel really welcome –it's been like a home from home.

She really loves her office. She says it's like a home from home.

My husband is my everything. Everywhere we are together is a home from home for me.

Homestay,

Homestay,

Katie: Thanks.L1:

Jenny: Anything else you want to know?L1:你还有什么问题吗?Katie:Yes, I’d like to have a shower. Where do I find a towel?L1:有,我想下个澡,请问浴巾在哪里呢?Jenny: Oh, yes. They’re in the cupboard in the bathroom. Just hang it on the towel rack to dry when you’ve finished. You can use the same one for a few days. It saves washing themevery day. We’re very water-conscious here.L1:哦,对了,浴巾在浴室的储物柜里。

Katie: Sorry, I didn’t catch all that.L1:对不起,您讲了这么多,我有些不太明白。

Jenny: Sorry. Here, come with me and I’ll show you. We’ll be having dinner in about an hour when Dylan gets home. Just yell out if you need anything.L1: 噢,对不起。

你跟我来,我指给你看。

一个小时之内迪伦回来之后我们就吃晚饭。

如果你需要什么东西的话就说一声。

Katie: Ah… OK, thanks.L1:

Jenny: Oh, where are you taking the basket?L1: 哦,你拿着洗衣筐去哪里呀?Katie: To the bathroom, for washing.L1: 我把它拿到浴室去,在那里洗啊。

Jenny: Oh, no, it’s for your dirty clothes. We call dirty clothes “washing” here.Don’t worry. You’ll soon get the hang of things.L1:
