Someone with a positive manner, perhaps a detective, used the expression “mad man” as he bent over Wilson’s body that afternoon, and the adventitious authority of his voice set the key for the newspaper reports next morning. Most of those reports were a nightmare --- grotesque, circumstantial, eager and untrue. When Michaelis’s testimony at the inquest brought to light Wilson’s suspicions of his wife, I thought the whole tale would shortly be served up in racy pasquinade --- but Catherine, who might have said anything, didn’t say a word. She showed a surprising amount of character about it too --- looked at the coroner with determined eyes under that corrected brow of hers and swore that her sister Daisy had never seen Gatsby, that her sister was completely happy with her husband Tom, that they were spending a nice time in London. She convinced herself of it and cried into her handkerchief as if the very suggestion was more than she could endure. So Wilson was reduced to a man “deranged by grief” in order that the case might remain in its simplest form. And it rested there.I think it was on the third day that a telegram signed Henry C.Gatz arrived from a town in Minnesota. It said only that the owl-eyed man was leaving immediately and to postpone the funeral until he came.It was Gatsby’s father, a solemn old man very helpless and dismayed, bundled up in a long cheap ulster against the warm September day. His eyes leaked continuously with excitement and when I took the bag and umbrella from his hands he began to pull so incessantly at his sparse grey beard that I had difficulty in getting off his coat. And as the moon rose higher the inessential houses began to melt away until gradually, I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors’ eyes ---a fresh, green breast of the new world. Its vanished trees, the trees that had made way for Gatsby’s house, had once pandered in whispers to the last and greatest of all human dreams; for a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder.Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter --- tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning ---So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.4.What does Daisy do after Gatsby is killed?A.She is very sad at the news.B.She goes on vacation with Tom.C.She phones from Chicago and sends flowers.D.She comes to his house and weeps uncontrollably.5.Why was Wilson thought as a man “deranged by grief”?A.To express his anger for Daisy.B.To show his sorrow for Gatsby.C.To confirm Wilson as a “mad man”.D.To keep the case as simple as it was before.6.Who is Henry C.Gatz?A.The man who buys Gatsby’s house.B.Gatsby’s father.C.A policeman who comes to the funeral.D.One of Gatsby’s neighbor.7.What’s the structure of the passage?A.①①—①①—①①B.①—①①①①—①C.①①—①①①—①D.①—①①①—①①What are the limits of the human body? Is there a point at which it is physically impossible to do something?“One thing we’ve all learned in the last 30 years or so is that just about anything is humanly possible,” says Dr. Jack Wilmore, author of Physiology of Sport and Exercise. “As time goes by, I think you’ll see more records continue to fall in every sport. The talent pool is better than ever. With more and better athletes involved and competing, records will fall and new standards will be set.”Many believed it was physically impossible for a human to run a mile in under four minutes, but Roger Bannister proved that theory wrong with a three-minute, 59-second mile in 1954. Today, sub-four-minute miles are considered routine even in high school. And Bob Beamon stretched human performance in the 1968 Olympics with his historic long jump of 8.90 metres. In an event where a record is usually broken by mere inches, he broke the previous jump record by more than 21 inches, but even his record was broken in 1991.One factor is now becoming more understood and heavily emphasized: sports psychology. Getting inside the athlete’s head can be as effective as training and long workouts. According to Wilmore, the psychological aspect of sports has become more and more esteemed. He points out that most professional teams have hired sports psychologists for their players. In addition, every aspect of athletics ---training, nutrition, injury treatment ---is far better than it’s ever been. “Besides, children today tend to specialize in one or two sports instead of competing in several as was common twenty-five years ago,” Wilmore says. “That means they start concentrating on a sport much earlier and more intensely, and they become much better at it.”“There’s a lot we don’t know yet about the human body,” he adds. “And one of those things is the full range of human potential. It would be foolish to try and put limits on what the human body can do.”8.Which statement will Wilmore probably agree with?A.It is preferable to set universal standards for athletes.B.Athletes will become the most sought-after celebrities.C.It is necessary for athletes to learn the limits of the body.D.Athletes will continue to surprise us with their achievements.9.Why are Roger Bannister and Bob Beamon mentioned in paragraph 3?A.To introduce two great athletes.B.To show some of the latest world records.C.To prove the limits of the body can be pushed.D.To explain what athletes can achieve under stress.10.What does the underlined word “esteemed” in paragraph 4 mean?A.Similar.B.Valued.C.Complex.D.Specialized.11.How are today’s children different from those years ago according to Wilmore?A.They participate in far more sports.B.They are less likely to get injured in sports.C.They begin playing sports at a much earlier age.D.They become more skilful at one particular sport. The old saying “Use it or lose it” doesn’t appear to be true when it comes to someone’s ability to preserve and use a foreign language, a new study has revealed. The research team tasked almost 500 British people who had taken French GCSE or A-level between the 1970s and 2020 with completing a French vocabulary and grammar test. They included a survey of whether participants had used their French knowledge over the years since their exams, and excluded (排除) anyone who had studied a language later on in life. They found that participants who had taken their exam 50 years ago and not used French since performed at the same level as recent school leavers, and as well as those who did, on occasion, use French.Lead researcher Monika Schmid said: “The knowledge of language is astonishingly stable over long periods of time, compared to other subjects such as maths, history or science. This is likely because of the way language is stored in memory. Vocabulary is memorized in the same way that facts, dates and names are, while this memory may become weaker over time, and grammar is learned in a similar way to riding a bike, a kind of muscle memory, which is much more stable. V ocabulary knowledge on the other hand, exists in a highly connected network, which means that we need only be reminded of a word that soundssimilar to a foreign language word for our brain to recall it.”“Many people are put off revisiting languages they once learnt as they fear they will be forced to relive some of the more ‘boring’ elements of the courses, such as grammar, but our work suggests that this would not be necessary. We hope that it might encourage more people to pick foreign languages back up if they know it would only take a short amount of time in refresher lessons to bounce back to their original level,” Schmid added.12.What did the researchers ask the participants to do?A.Take a French exam.B.Conduct a survey in French.C.Learn French from recent school leavers.D.Talk about their French GCSE experience.13.What can help us recall a foreign word?A.A fact related to it.B.Our muscle memory.C.A similar-sounding word.D.The grammar of the language. 14.What can we infer from Schmid’s words in the last paragraph?A.One is able to quickly and easily relearn a language.B.Years of use promises fluency in a foreign language.C.The boring elements of a language course are important.D.Refresher lessons are necessary in picking foreign languages back up.15.What is the best title for the text?A.Language Tests Taken at School MatterB.If You Don’t Use a Language, You Lose ItC.Knowledge of Foreign Languages Lasts a LifetimeD.When You Grasp the Grammar, You Learn the Language二、七选五Many families stick to the belief that some schools offer golden tickets for their children’s futures. Whether it’s an Ivy League college or a high-price “dream school,” too many people believe certain schools are worth endless effort, stress and debt. They believegreater impact on career prospects than the reputation of the college you attend. For example, if you are interested in pursuing a career in engineering, it is important to choose a college that has a strong engineering program. 17 While attending a reputable college may offer networking opportunities and access to top resources, the value of these benefits may fall if your major does not align with (与……一致) your career goals. Furthermore, practical skills and experience are important in today’s job market. Therefore, choosing a major that provides hands-on experience and opportunities for internships (实习) is more likely to lead to employment opportunities than simply attending a reputable college.18 “A graduate with a degree in engineering is going to come in at three times the salary of someone who graduated from Harvard with a soft degree, you know, liberal arts, humanities, whatever,” says Paul Hill, president of Job Search Intelligence in Los Angeles.Another important factor to consider is the cost of attendance. Attending a reputable college may come with a high price. 19 Choosing a college that is affordable and offers a strong program in your chosen major is a smart financial decision that can pay off in the long run.In conclusion, when choosing a college, it is important to prioritize your major over the reputation of the college you attend. 20A.That can lead to significant student loan debt.B.The cost is what matters, not the name of the school.C.If their child gets in, their life’s road will be surfaced with gold.D.Dream schools don’t produce happier or more successful people.E.Your major choice can also have an impact on your earning potential.F.Similarly, choose a college with a reputable journalism program for a journalism career.G.Your major plays a significant role in shaping your career prospects and earning potential.三、完形填空Our house was across the street from the entrance of a famous hospital in the city. Despite the progress that has been made in genetics and psychology, human intelligence has remained one of the most controversial areas of modern science, until now, that is, for the discovery of a gene linked to intelligence has made the experts think again.Robert Plomin of the Institute of Psychiatry in London and his colleagues in the US have been looking into genetic make-up. From their research, they have discovered that a slightly different gene is more common in those with a high IQ. Plomin analyzed DNA from two groups of 51 children aged between 6 and 15. What he found was that the first group had an IQ of 136, putting them in the top 5% of the population, while the other group had an average IQ of 103. An analysis of their genes showed that 32% of children in the higher group had the gene in question, while only 16% in the second group did. However, there is a lot more research to be done, and Plomin himself is cautious at this early stage. He suggests that there are probably many genes that contribute to intelligence, rather than just one.Several studies have shown a strong link between IQ and career success, although some psychologists remain unconvinced about this. Professor Michael Rowe, who has written a book called Genius Explained, is one of these. “The people with the highest IQs are not usually the ones who do best in their careers.”Many psychologists now believe that when it comes to in telligence, IQ isn’t everything. Many alternative views have been put forward recently. One example is the idea of multiple intelligences, which was developed in the 1980s by Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner. This offers a much broader view than the IQ theory, including creativity and communication skills as relevant factors in intelligence.Tony Buzan, brain expert and author of Master your Memory, is enthusiastic about this belief, arguing that true geniuses do indeed appear to combine high levels of each type of intelligence. He lists Alexander the Great, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein as examples. At the same time, Buzan believes that everyone can develop their intelligence, only if they take the trouble to exercise their brain. Perhaps there’s hope for us all!24. What is the topic of the passage?A. The relationship between genes and intelligence.B. IQ benefits a lot from high intelligence.C. How to develop intelligence.D. What makes intelligence.25. What can we learn from the passage?A. Robert Plomin confirms genes have something in common.B. Howard Gardner thinks intelligence includes various elements.C. Michael Rowe approves of a strong link between IQ and career.D. Tony Buzan is a follower of Howard Gardner as a psychologist.26. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. The development of intelligence.B. The idea of multiple intelligences.C. IQ isn’t everything for intelligence.D. Alternative views have been put forward.27. Which of the following might Tony Buzan agree with?A. People with a different gene are often more successful.B. People with high IQ have a tendency to be more creative.C. With more practice in brains, people can be more intelligent.D. Intelligence is made up of creativity and communication skills.CRumors: we’ve all heard some and we’ve all spread some. In more traditional times they shook entire families. Today, they circulate differently because the way we share information has also changed. The fact is that rumors have great potential to upset things, whether socially or personally. We don't enjoy being on the receiving end of one, since they usually don't have good intentions. They are somewhat veiled (掩饰的) messages.Normally rumors are oral messages: word of mouth. The paradox (自相矛盾) is that there is no evidence to support rumors, but the more people share it, the more they see it as true. To finish defining rumors, we think that they follow certain very clear laws. Secrecy: The source is unknown. There is also a proven phenomenon that human beings usually forget the source of a message before they forget its content. Certainty: We hardly question rumors simply because of the mental effort involved. On the other hand, no one likes to doubt a person who convinces us that the information they spread is true. Change: It acts like a tree. New rumors branch out to fill in the gaps left by the initial rumor.Another property of rumors is that they tend to become viral. Each receiver is at the same time a potential transmitter of the information. The receiver often adds their own opinion. Their manner and tone of transmitting it also changes it.How can we end rumors? The answer is as simple as it is impossible: preventingpeople from communicating. A more realistic response is equally difficult, although less than the first one. It is that we should be critical of the information we receive. We should ask ourselves if the source is reliable. Ask (if possible) the person you heard it from whether they also trust the information. We should also think about if the rumor benefits someone, and if that someone started the rumor. One rumor to be especially cautious of is a rumor about groups relatively unable to defend themselves. That's why we say, “history is always told by the victors.” The fi rst payment the defeated must make is to accept the victor’s version of the story.28. What can we learn about rumors?A. We have all heard some and believed them.B. We’re happy to be the receiving end of them.C. They may have negative influence on society.D. They often hide good intentions in the messages.29. How are rumours like trees?A. Rumours keep changing, just as trees change their colour.B. Rumours are deeply rooted in reality, like tree roots in the earth.C. New rumours have gaps, like the space between tree branches.D. New rumours grow out of the original, like branches out of a trunk.30. What does the underlined word “'viral” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A. Something easily spread.B. Something acceptable.C. Something easily defended.D. Something beneficial.31. Which of the following may the author agree with?A. It is easy to prevent people from spreading rumors.B. People are often active in judging the rumors critically.C. We should think about the hidden message of the rumors.D. Stories told by the victors are usually better worth trusting.DIt started during a yoga class. She felt a strange pull on her neck, a feeling completely foreign to her. Her friend suggested she rush to the emergency room. It turned out that she was having a heart attack. She didn't share similar symptoms with someone who was likely to have a heart attack. She exercised, watched her plate and did not smoke. But on reviewing her medical history, I found that her cholesterol (胆固醇) level was sky-high. She had been prescribed a cholesterol-lowering statin (他汀) medication, but she never picked up the prescription because of the scary things she had read about statins on the Internet. She was the victim of fake medical news. While misinformation has been the object of great attention in politics, medical misinformation might lead to an increase in deaths. As is true with fake news in general, medical lies tend to spread further than truths on the Internet and they have very real bad consequences.False medical information can also lead to patients experiencing greater side effects through the “nocebo effect” (反安慰剂效应). Sometimes patients benefit from an intervention (干预) simply because they believe they will -- that's the placebo effect (安慰剂效应). The nocebo effect is the opposite. Patients can experience harmful effects because they anticipate them. This is very true of statins. In blindedtrials, patients who get statins are no more likely to report feeling muscle aches than patients who get a placebo. Yet, in clinical practice, according to one study, almost a fifth of patients taking statins report side effects, leading many to discontinue the drugs. What else is on the fake news hit list? As always, vaccines (疫苗). False concerns that the vaccine may cause side effects have greatly reduced coverage rates.Cancer is another big target for pushers of medical misinformation -- many of whom refuse alternative therapies. “Though most people think cancer tumors are bad, they’re actually the way your body attempts to contain the harmful cells,” one fake news story reads. It warns that prescription medications lead to the uncontrolled cell mutations (变异).Silicon Valley needs to face this problem. I am not a free-speech lawyer, but when human health is at risk, perhaps search engines, social media platforms and websites should be held responsible for promoting or hosting fake information. Meanwhile, journalists should do a better job of spreading accurate information.32.We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ______.A. the woman paid little attention to her daily dietsB. the unhealthy lifestyle might lead to the woman's heart attackC. the symptom of the heart attack was familiar to the womanD. the woman didn't take the prescription due to fake medical news33. According to the passage, the placebo effect functions because patients ______.A. neglect necessary treatmentB. discontinue the harmful drugsC. believe the benefits of an interventionD. suffer more side effects34. What does the author mean by claiming that "he is not a free-speech lawyer" inthe last paragraph?A. He is a lawyer very easy to speak to.B. He is good at speaking because of his job.C. He is available to give a speech on the law.D. He is very cautious when speaking something.35. The main purpose of the passage is to ______.A. remind us to take medication as prescribedB. warn us against fake medical news on the InternetC. encourage journalists to report more positive news eventsD. teach us how to distinguish fake medical news on the Internet第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
