Russian Winter
Because of the vast size of the territory, Russia consists of several continental zones. For example, in the north winters are long and harsh, in some places there is lots of snow fall and temperatures fall below -40 degrees Celsius. These winters are normal, not only in the northern regions of the country but even in the Far East. Summers in these areas don't even see three warm months out of the year. The winter climate of Russia worked as a contributing factor to military failures of several invasions of Russia in the history.
Campaign n. a series of military operations or planned activities with a

Eg. 雇佣未受良好训练的工人效果是不会好的。 It is not efficient to hire poorly trained workers.

Unit 4 Globalization
Before Reading Global Reading Detailed Reading After Reading Supplementary Reading
As borders and national identities become less important, some find that threatening and even dangerous. In an essay entitled “Dead Souls: The Denationalization of the American Elite,” Harvard Professor Samuel Huntington describes Davos Man (a phrase that first got widespread attention in the 1990s) as an emerging global superspecies and a threat. The members of this class, he writes, are people who “have little need for national loyalty, view national boundaries as obstacles that thankfully are vanishing, can
Unit 4 Globalization

Globalization is sweeping aside national borders and changing relations between nations. What impact does this have on national identities and loyalties? Are they strengthened or weakened? The author investigates. In Search of Davos Man Peter Gumbel William Browder was born in Princeton, New Jersey, grew up in Chicago, and studied at Stanford University in California. But don’t call him an American. For the past 16 of his 40 years he has lived outside the U.S., first

Davos, Switzerland
Davos, Switzerland
It is a city in eastern Switzerland, in the canton of Graubünden(格劳宾登 州). Located in the Rhaetian Alps(里申阿尔卑斯山 ), 1,560 to 1,574 m above sea level, in a broad valley surrounded with high mountains and covered with pine forests and alpine meadows.

processes etc. that seem similar. Further explanation is often needed in order to reveal the similarity in detail.
e.g., Glove is to hand as monitor is to computer. Furs were to north American aboriginals as credit is to a shopper. Notice how there are similarities in the terms used first and the ones that they are compared to. A glove has a similar relation to a hand just as a monitor has to a computer. Furs served a similar function in North American aboriginals cultures as credit provides in our shopping world of today.
Analogy and metaphor
• Despite certain similarities, an analogy is not the same as a metaphor. As Bradford Stull observes in The Elements of metaphor. Figurative Language (Longman, 2002), the analogy “is a “is figure of language that expresses a set of like relationships among two sets of terms. In essence, the analogy does not claim total identification, which is the property of the metaphor. It claims a similarity of relationships. • Unlike simile or metaphor which usually uses comparison on one point of resemblance, analogy draws a parallel between two unlike things that have several common qualities or points of resemblance.
