Passage 1
The Literature Review part of a research paper should first answer the question of what others have done. From the theoretical point of view, relevant concepts should be defined carefully to avoid ambiguity or misunderstanding. At the same time, an outline of the main reviews or a theory model should be made, and previous researches need to be summarized. What are the existent viewpoints of the related topic? What are the master works of the present topic and who are the representative scholars? To what extent has the topic developed so far?
The question to answer next is what has not been done. To convince the significance of the present research, the researcher needs to make critical analysis over the past resources, and more importantly to “find faults” with them by qualitative or quantitative approach, so as to point out the limitations that might have existed in applying research methods, gathering data or summarizing ideas.
On the basis of the above, the question to answer in the final part of Literature Review is what I would like to do, which echoes the Introduction part. In addition, the research purpose
should be restated, and the research hypothesis should be raised and properly justified.
Passage 2
This paper reports on an investigation of Bai (a minority people in China) junior and senior high school learners’language learning strategies while they were learning English as a third language. The study aimed to explore Bai EFL learners’ overall frequency of strategy use and how gender, length of time in English study and ethnicity might affect the strategy choice. The collected SILL Questionnaire data from 502 participants indicated that the overall frequency of strategies employed by Bai EFL learners was at a moderate level and both juniors and seniors preferred metacognitive and social strategies to cognitive, compensation, affective and memory strategies. The results further demonstrated that female participants used more strategies than males ones, and the seniors employed more affective strategies than their counterparts. Major factors that may affect the strategy choice and implications of the study were discussed.
