We also got to stop at a little fishing village and I tried my first-ever fresh coconut drink straight from a coconut. It was so delicious and refreshing on such a hot day.After a week in Hainan, we travelled to my grandparents' hometown of Xi'an to visit them for a few days. That's where my dad grew up. I love going there because the city is full of such cool history. We always visit these incredible terracotta warrior statues that were buried underground for over 2000 years before being discovered! Can you imagine that? Thousands of life-sized soldier sculptures all standing at attention. My mind was blown thinking about how long they had been there.My grandparents live in a traditional courtyard house in the Muslim Quarter neighborhood. That's where my grandpa's ancestors are from. The narrow streets are packed with tinyshops, markets, and restaurants. Everything smells so good from all the street food - skewers of lamb kebabs, warm naan bread, and my favorite - hand-pulled noodles! You can watch the chefs stretching and twisting the dough into long noodles right in front of you. I tried making them myself but it's much harder than it looks!One night we went to this amazing fountain show at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. It's this gigantic historic pagoda that's been around for over 1300 years! The show combined lights, music, water fountains, and even fire at some points. The water would dance and change colors in time to traditional Chinese music playing. The grand finale featured the whole pagoda appearing to be on fire with bright red and orange light projections. It looked like a burning torch against the night sky. So cool!After Xi'an, we headed back to Beijing but stopped for a few days at my aunt and uncle's place in Chengde. They live in this gorgeous villa surrounded by mountains. We went on some fun hikes and swam in the rivers and streams in the area. One day we visited these amazing imperial summer gardens and palaces built way back in the 1700s. The Chinese emperors used to escape Beijing's heat by vacationing there. The gardens hadpavilions, temples, bridges, and even a replica of a Tibetan Buddhist monastery!The last stop on our trip was Inner Mongolia to visit some nomadic families living out in the vast grasslands there. That was a really unique experience! We stayed in traditional Mongolian yurts which are circular tents made of wood and canvas. At night, we would sit around a fire, drink milk tea, and listen to folks play traditional instruments and sing throatsinging songs. It was like nothing I'd ever heard before!During the days, we went on horseback rides across the wide open prairies and hiked up grassy hills. The landscape looked like it went on forever with no trees or buildings in sight, just sporadic herds of cows, sheep, and horses roaming free. One afternoon, some of the nomads showed us how they practice archery on horseback, which was their main hunting method traditionally. They were such excellent riders and incredible archers to be able to do both at once. I just about fell off my horse trying it!We also got to participate in an authentic Mongolian barbecue one evening. It involved digging a pit in the ground, filling it with hot coals and rocks, and then putting a grated rack over the top to cook all the meat and vegetables. It proves that potential discovered may lead to success.12. The Little Match GirlIt was late on a cold, snowy New Year's Eve. A poor little girl was wandering in the dark streets. She was bare-headed and bare-footed. She certainly had had slippers on when she left home, but they were not muchgood, for they were so huge and had last been worn by her mother. And they fell off the poor little girl's feet when she was running across the street to avoid two carriages that were rolling rapidly by.So the poor little girl had to go on with her little bare feet which were red and blue with the cold. She carried a quantity of matches in her old apron, and held a packet of them in her hand. Nobody had bought any of her matches during all the long day. Nobody had even given her a copper. The poor little creature was hungry and perishing with cold and she looked the picture of misery. She found a corner where one house projected a little beyond the next one, and here, she crouched, drawing up her feet under her. But she was colder than ever.Her little hands were almost dead with cold. One little match would do some good. Dare she pull one out of the bundle and strike it on the wall to warm her fingers? She pulled one out. How it splattered, how it blazed. It burnt with a bright clear flame just like a candle when she held her hand on it. It was a very curious candle, too. The little girl fancied that she was sitting in front of a big stove with polished brass feet and handles. There was a splendid fire blazing in it and warming her so beautifully. But what happened? Just as she was stretching out her feet to warm them, the blaze went out.……In the cold morning light, the poor little girl sat there in the cornerbetween the houses, with rosy cheeks and a smile on her face. Dead.13. The Milkmaid and Her Pail of MilkA farmer’s daughter was once carrying her pail of milk from the field to the farmhouse when she began to think and plan. “I will sell this milk, ” she said to herself, “and with the money I can surely buy three hundred eggs. I will put these eggs under hens, and surely two hundred and fifty of them will hatch. I will feed these chickens, and make them fat, and I will take them to the market when chickens are dear. I will sell them at the market, and with this money, I will buy a new dress. In this dress, I will go to the fair. I shall look so fine that all the young men will ask me to marry them. But I will toss my head and refuse them all.” As she said this, she really tossed her head. Down fell the pail, and the milk spilled all over the ground. That was the end of her fine plans.The moral of this story is: Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.14. Spell of the Rising Moonby Peter Steinhart There is a hill near my home that I often climb at night. The noise of the city is a far-off murmur. In the hush of dark I share the cheerfulness of crickets and the confidence of owls. But it is the drama of the moonrisethat I come to see. For that restores in me a quiet and clarity that the city spends too freely.From this hill I have watched many moons rise. Each one had its own mood. There have been broad, confident harvest moons in autumn; shy, misty moons in spring; lonely, white winter moons rising into the utter silence of an ink-black sky and smoke-smudged orange moons over the dry fields of summer. Each, like fine music, excited my heart and then calmed my soul.15A delegation from North Korea has arrived in Seoul to discuss agreements signed last month at talks between the leaders of North and South Korea. The 5-member delegation arrived in Seoul from Beijing, because there are no direct flights between the two Koreas. The two sides are to discuss ways to carry out an agreement to reduce differences between North and South Korea.16American officials say there is evidence that the White House in Washington was a target of the terrorist attack in the United States Tuesday. A Presidential spokesman says President Bush’s official airplane Air Force One also may have been a target. The president was visiting Florida when hijacked air planes crashed in New York city and at thePentagon near Washington .Mr. Bush flew on Air Force One from Florida to the States of Louisiana and Nebraska before returning to Washington late Tuesday.17India’s population now has reac hed more than one thousand million people. India’s pop ulation grows by about 42,000 people every day. China is the only country with more people. But population officials say India could have the world’s largest population in the next 50 years if India’s birth rate is not slowed. India’s citizens have express ed fear that soon there will be more people than the country’s natural resources can support. India’s government says it is developing new ways to deal with the problem. These include improvements in health care and family planning services.18A huge fire is burning in a major market area of the capital Vientiane. At least 7 people were injured. There have been 8 reported explosions in Vientiane in the last 4 months. It is not known if the explosions and the fire Tuesday are related. Lao officials believe ethnic Houamuang rebels carried out the bombing attacks. The rebels deny any involvement.19American medical researchers say drinking 4 or more cups of green tea a day could help prevent skin cancer. Researchers made the statementin a report in the American Medical Association Journal. They examined earlier research suggesting that a substance in green tea can kill cancer cells. It said the substance may also suppress cancerous growth by limiting blood vessel growth around them.20A new World Bank re port says almost 50% of the world’s people live on less than 2 dollars a day. The report says efforts to end poverty differ greatly in different areas. In East Asia, the number of people living on less than 1 dollar a day fell from about 420 million in 1987 to about 280 million in 1998. But the number of poor people has been increasing in South Asia, Latin America, and in Africa south of the Sahara Desert. Poverty has increased 20 times in Eastern Europe and central Asia. The report says the world’s poor co uld be helped by increasing world economic growth.21Police have arrested 5 suspects for an armed attack on a boat on Lake Tanganyika last week. Fourteen people were killed. Three others are feared to have died in the water. Police say the suspects are four Congolese refugees and a citizen of Tanzania. They were among a group of 6 gunmen who attacked the boat and stole money from its 70 passengers. The attackers ordered the 60 male passengers to take off their clothes and go into the water. Forty-five swam to safety. The attackersthen killed the boat captain and a 3-year-old girl. Heavy rains and storms have slowed efforts to find people who are missing.22. Xi’an’s Terra-cotta SoldiersFor over 2,000 years the terra-cotta soldiers of Xi’an, have sil ently stood protecting their king. The soldiers were buried deep below ground. Safely hidden, they guarded the history of ancient China.In 1974, a group of farmers were digging in their field. Suddenly they found a large object. It was one of the clay soldiers. Since then, archaeologists have found more soldiers and the burial sites of an ancient king.In 221BC, King Ying Zheng of Qin conquered the six states of China. For the first time, China became one country with one king. The king wanted people to remember his accomplishments in the future. So he gave himself a new title, the First Emperor of China. He also built a huge burial site. The Emperor’s body lies near the center of the site. Guarding him is an army of nearly 8,000 life-size clay soldiers.The clay soldiers almost look real. Life-like faces stare back at you. Each one is different. Some are youthful. Others are wrinkled with experience and age. Each soldier wears a uniform and armor. Many of the figures are still whole. However, a number of them have missing arms or heads. Besides the soldiers, archaeologists have also found 600 clayhorses.The burial site covers 56.25 square kilometers. Inside a covered area, visitors can see the clay soldiers and watch the archaeologists at wo rk. Only three sections of the site have been dug up. The Emperor’s grave remains untouched.The terra-cotta soldiers give us a window to the past. Thanks to this discovery, we can better understand China's ancient history. The First Emperor of China got his wish. He will not be forgotten.23. Disney WorldDisney World, Florida, is the biggest amusement resort in the world. It covers 24.4 thousand acres, and is twice the size of Manhattan. It was opened on October 1, 1971, five years after Walt Disney's death, and it is a larger, slightly more ambitious version of Disneyland near Angeles.Foreigners tend to associate Walt Disney with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and with his other famous cartoon characters, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.There is very little that could be called vulgar in Disney World. It attracts people of most tastes and most income groups, and people of all ages, from toddlers to grandpas. There are two expensive hotels, a golf course, forest trails for horseback riding and rivers for canoeing. But the central attraction of the resort is the Magic Kingdom.Between the huge parking lots and the Magic Kingdom lies a broadartificial lake. In the distance rise the towers of Cinderella's Castle. Even getting to the Magic Kingdom is quite an adventure. You have a choice of transportation. You can either cross the lake on a replica of a Mississippi paddlewheeler, or you can glide around the shore in a streamlined monorail train.When you reach the terminal, you walk straight into a little square which faces Main Street. Main Street is late 19th century. There are modern shops inside the buildings, but all the facades are of the period. There are hanging baskets full of red and white flowers, and there is no traffic except a horse-drawn streetcar and an ancient double-decker bus. Yet as you walk through the Magic Kingdom, you are actually walking on top of a network of underground roads. This is how the shops, restaurants and all other material needs of the Magic Kingdom are invisibly supplied.。

We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.我们可以把神秘的、不可知的未来塑造成我们想象中的任何一种样子,就像雕塑家把一尊未成形的石头刻成雕像。

We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.我们就像是农夫。
