Most of us spend our lives seeking the natural world. We go fishing, sit in the garden, have a picnic, live in the suburbs or go to the seaside. The most popular leisure activity in Britain is going for a walk. When joggers jog, they don't run the streets. Every one of them tend to go to the park or the river. But despite this, our children are growing up nature deprived (剥夺)).1 spent my boyhood climbing trees. These days, children are robbed of these ancient freedoms, due to problems like crime, traffic, the loss of the open spaces and strange new ideas about what is best for children, that is to say, things that can be bought, rather than things that can be found. The truth is to be found elsewhere. A study in the US: families had moved to better bousing and the children were assessed(评估)for ADHD﹣attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (多动症).Those whose accommodation had more natural views showed an improvement of 19%; those who had the same improvement in material surroundings but no nice view improved just 4%.ADHD is one of the great problems of modem childhood. One study after another indicates that contact with nature gives huge benefits to ADHD children. However, we spend money on drugs rather than on green places. The life of old people is measurably better when they have access to nature. The increasing concern for the growing population of old people is in quality rather than quantity of years. And study after study finds that a garden is the single most important thing in finding that quality. Even problems with crime and aggressive behavior are reduced when there is contact with the natural world. We need the wild world. It is essential to our well﹣being, our health and our happiness.(1)According to the author, people enjoy________to seek nature.A.jogging on the streetB. shopping in the supermarketC.sitting in the gardenD. running in the gym.(2)From the second paragraph, we can see that________.A.children probably spend less time in nature nowadaysB.adults deprive the children of their rights to approach natureC.climbing trees will certainly do good to the childrenD.children tend to be happier as a result of their material satisfaction.(3)In what way do people benefit from their contact with nature?________A.Children with ADHD can be cured.B.Children's performance at school is greatly improved.C.A garden nearby improves the quality of old people's life.D.Problems with crime and violent behavior will easily be solved..(4)What is the main idea of this passage?________A.Nature treats children with ADHD.Access to nature improves our life.B.Getting close to nature reduces crime.C.Man can't live without natural areas.A.Delayed answers are lies.B.It is unfair to require all to answer slowly.C.Delayed answers can lead to misjudgment.D.Delayed response should be ignored completely.5.Genetic(基因的)testing cannot tell teachers anything useful about an individual pupil's educational achievement. That is the conclusion of a study that looked at how well so-called polygenic scores for education predict a person's educational achievements, based on a long-term study of thousands of people in the UK. "Some people with a very low genetic score are very high performers at age 16. Some are even in the top 3 percent," says Tim Morris at the University of Bristol, UK.And while Morris expects the accuracy of polygenic scores for educational achievements to improve, he doesn't think they will ever be good enough to predict how well an individual will do. Even relatively simple qualities such as height are influenced by thousands of genetic variants, each of which may only have a tiny effect. It has been claimed that polygenic scores can be used to make useful predictions, such as a person's likelihood of developing various diseases. One company is even offering embryo screening(screening of an unborn baby in the very stages of development)based on polygenic scores for disease risk. Some researchers—notably Robert Plomin of King's College London—think that schools should start using polygenic scores for educational achievement. In most cases, the scores may reflect qualities such as persistence as well as intelligence. To assess the usefulness of polygenic scores in education, Morris and his colleagues calculated them for 8,000 people in Bristol who are part of a long-term study known as the Children of the 90s. The participants' genomes have been queued and their academic results are available to researchers. Among other things, the team found a correlation of 0.4 between a person's polygenic score and their exam results at age 16. But there would need to be a correlation of at least 0.8 to make useful predictions about individuals, says Morris.Plomin, however, argues that the results support his opinion. "A correlation of 0.4 makes it the strongest polygenic predictor in the behavioural sciences," says Plomin. "It's so much stronger than a lot of other things we base decisions on. So it's a very big finding."Morris says schools already have access to other predictors that are more accurate, such as a pupil's earlier test results. Looking at parents' educational achievements is also a better predictor of a pupil's academic results than studying their genome, his results show. Providing teachers with an extra predictor based on genetics would just confuse matters, says Morris, and the cost cannot be justified.(1)In paragraph 2, Morris talks about "height" in order to tell readers that ________.A.some qualities are hardly affected by any genetic variantsB.some qualities are influenced by thousands of genetic variantsC.genetic scores are useful in predicting one's potential diseasesD.genetic scores can help children improve their scores at school(2)How did Morris prove the effect of polygenetic scores in education?A.By providing opposite examples.B.By explaining how the genome works.C.By listing findings from another scientist.D.By presenting facts and data from research.(3)According to Plomin, a correlation of 0.4 is reliable because it is ________.eful in telling you how intelligent and persistent children areeful in predicting people who might struggle academicallyC.stronger compared to other factors in behavioural sciencesD.strongly correlated to children's academic achievements(4)Morris suggested that schools should ________.A.study every pupil's genomesB.spend some money on genetic testsC.know about parents' educational achievementsD.provide teachers with students' genetic information三、书面表达(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)6. 高二学年(上)期中素养测评卷(I)I.阅读理解:(共15小题;每小题3分,满分45分)AModern inventions have speeded up people’s lives amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in little more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed. Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year motor-cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boasts (吹嘘)of saving precious seconds in handling tasks. All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind in another time zone. Again, spending too long at computers results in painful wrists and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientists; too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence we do not like to think about. However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it seems. We are so accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing, or even just one thing at a time. Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world. There was a time when some people’s lives were devoted simply to the cultivation(耕耘) of the land or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this. Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard tasks our ancestors faced; they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to make tools from wood and stone. Modern machinery has freed people from that primitive existence.1. The new products become more and more time-saving because _________.A. our love on speed seems never-endingB. time is limitedC. the prices are increasingly highD. the manufacturers boast a lot2. What does “the days” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Imaginary life.B. Simple life in the past.C. Times of inventions .D. Time for constant activity.3. What is the author’s attitude towards the modern technology?A. Critical.B. Objective.C. Optimistic.D. Negative.4.What difficulty is not our ancestors faced with?A. They farmed with bare handsB. They often lived close to hungerC. They had to make tools from wood and stone.D. They need to take care of cattle.5. What does the passage mainly discuss?A. The present and past times.B. Machinery and human beings.C. Imaginations and inventions.D. Modern technology and its influence.BI began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then. The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves.I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times. ”My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to thedoctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives. From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.6. How did the author get to know America?A. From her relativesB. From her motherC. From Books and picturesD. From radio programs7. On leaving for America the author felt .A. confusedB. excitedC. worriedD. amazed8. For the first two years in New York, the author .A. often lost her wayB. did not think about her futureC. studied in three different schoolsD. got on well with her stepfather9. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?A. She worked as a translatorB. She attended a lot of job interviewsC. She paid telephone bills for her familyD. She helped her family with her English10. The author believes that .A. her future will be free from troublesB. it is difficult to learn to become patientC. there are more good things than bad thingsD. good things will happen if one keeps tryingCIt’s important for everyone to learn how to apologize effectively (有效地). You might think a simple “I’m sorry” will take care of everything. 11 There are some situations in which you need to apologize properly.Apologize sincerely.Apologizing through a half-hearted “Sorry” will get you nowhere. 12 If you really want to apologize, you must do it with sincerity. Accept the fact that you were in the wrong.13Contrary to (与……相反) what you might think, apologizing over and over again isn’t going to help, especially if you’re apologizing to someone who’s your boss.Don’t wait too long to apologize. One good tip on how to apologize effectively is to do it as soon as you realize your mistake. Some people put off giving an apology because they think it will save them from the offended (被冒犯的) person’s anger. However, that is just impolite. If you can’t approach the person personally at once, send him or her a message first. 14 Do n’t expect too much. You can’t expect that person to forgive you immediately. If you’re going to apologize, you have to be prepared for the worst. The conversation isn’t going to be the most comfortable one either.15 Learning how to apologize effectively is very important. It shows people that you are a very kind person.A. Don’t apologize repeatedly.B. However, that’s not exactly true.C. Pay a visit to others ahead of time.D. You’d better prepare yourself for anyt hing.E. But make sure you make an apology in person as well.F. In fact, it might get you into even bigger trouble than before.G. A lot of people don’t know how to make an apology to their boss.II.完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分):Once upon a time a boy named Gregory caught a silver-colored mouse. 14-15学年外研高二上学期期中测试ⅠClass: Name: Marks: 满分(120)第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AIn the few years when I was a teacher I learned a lot of things. Perhaps the most important one of all was the glorious, life-changing power of an encouraging word. I discovered it early while I was still in college completing my student-teaching hours in a local middle school.I had read the work Leo Buscaglia had done with his University of Southern California students. In one exercise Leo and his students had made two lists of words, one positive and one negative. Then they had thrown the negative words in the trash and tried to use only the positive words for one month. They were amazed at how much better their lives became just by using words full of kindness and encouragement.I decided to try this as well by finding something good to write on each paper my students handed in. It wasa lot easier than I thought it would be. No matter how many errors a student’s paper contained there was always a funny sentence, beautiful thought, or great idea that I could comment on. I remember glancing over my desk and seeing some of the students rereading those encouraging words again and again. It was a joy seeing their eyes shine a little brighter, their backs sit up a little straighter, and their learning climb a lot higher.I recently saw one of my former students from that class and we talked for a while. He was married, doing well in his job, and had two children of his own. As I was saying goodb ye he said, “You know I still have a few of those old papers from your class. I still look at them from time to time. I just hope my kids have as good a teacher as you.” I walked off amazed at the effect those few positive words had on his life.1. Some women, when they apologize, feel really good and think they’ve made a positive effort to mend the relationship. Men, on the other hand, often don’t feel as good, and may feel a loss of “face” when they apologize. Women need to remember it costs men much more to say it than women. And men need to remember how important their apology is to women as a way of healing(治愈) relationship. Here are three Rs when you apologize:ResponsibilityWhen you apologize, the first thing you need to do is to take responsibility for your action. If you said something that hurt your partner, even if you didn’t mean to, own up to it. Und erstand, from your partner’s point of view, why those words were hurtful. You may even express that you had no idea that they hurt, and you want to understand the reason why they caused unhappiness.Remorse(懊悔)The next step in a heartfelt apology is sincere remorse. Express how bad you feel that your words caused your partner’s pain and that you did not do it on purpose—but only if it’s true. If you did try to reduce pain from your words, try to understand why you did it.Repentance(悔改)It’s not always easy to change your ways, especially if you didn’t hurt your partner on purpose. But it’s important to make a conscious effort not to repeat your mistake if you value your relationship. I was lucky: I became a pilot in 1970, almost ten years before I graduated from medical school. I didn’t realize then, but being a pilot makes me a better surgeon.I loved flying. As I flew bigger, faster planes, and in worse weather, I learned about crew resource management(机组资源管理), or CRM, a new idea to make flying safer. It means that crew members should listen and speak up for a good result, regardless of positions.I first read about CRM in 1980. Not long after that, an attending doctor and I were flying in bad weather. The controller had us turn too late to get our landing ready. The attending doctor was flying; I was safety pilot. He was so busy because of the bad turn, he had forgotten to put the landing gear(起落架)down. He was a better pilot —and my boss —so it felt unusual to speak up. But I had to: Our lives were in danger. I put aside my uneasiness and said, “We need to put the landing gear down now!” That was my first real lesson in the power of CRM, and I’ve used it in the operating room ever since.CRM requires that the pilot/surgeon encourage others to speak up. It further requires that when opinions are from the opposite, the doctor doesn’t overreact, which might prevent fellow doctors from voicing opinions again. So when I’m in the operating room, I ask for ideas and help from others. Sometimes they’re not willing to speak up. But I hope that if I continue to encourage them, someday someone will keep me from “landing gear up”.4. What does the author say about doctors in general?A. They like flying by themselves.B. They are unwilling to take advice.C. They pretend to be good pilots.D. They are quick learners of CRM.5.The author deepened his understanding of the power of CRM when________.A. he saved the plane by speaking upB. he was in charge of a flying taskC. his boss landed the plane too lateD. his boss operated on a patient6. In the last p aragraph “landing gear up” probably means ________.A. following flying requirementsB. overreacting to different opinionsC. listening to what fellow doctors sayD. making a mistake that may cost lives7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. CRM:A New Way to Make Flying SafeB. Flying Makes Me a Better DoctorC. The Making of a Good PilotD. A PilotTurned DoctorCSome people will do just about anything to save money. And I am one of them. Takemy family’s last vac ation. It was my sixyearold son’s winter break from school, and we were heading home from Fort Lauderdale after a weeklong trip. The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day. I had meetings in New York, so I had to get back. But that didn’t mean my husband and my son couldn’t stay. I took my ninemonthold and took off for home. The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight. Yes, I encouraged — okay, ordered — them to wait it out at the airport, to “earn” more Delta Dollars. Our total take: $1,600. Not bad, huh?Now some people may think I’m a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a bigtime bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up.I’ve made a living looking for the best deals and exposing(揭露)the worst tricks.I have been the consumer reporter of NBC’s Today show for over a decade. I have writtena couple of books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it es to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn’t hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and it’s the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.8. Why did Delta give the author’s family credits?A. How to make a business deal.DIt happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President.A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly (精彩地)written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t.In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Fath er is at number 9.The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one tolie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984.I think it’s really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either ) and Herman Melville.Asked why they lied, the most mon reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became m ore indepth! But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Fortytwo percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll e clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).12. How did the author find his friend a book liar?A. By judging his manner of speaking.B. By looking into his background.C. By mentioning a famous name.D. By discussing the book itself.13. Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?A. Charles Dickens is very low on the topten list.B. 42% of people pretended to have read 1984.C. The author admitted having read 9 books.D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read.14. By lying about reading, a person hopes to ________.A. control the conversationB. appear knowledgeableC. learn about the bookD. make more friends15. What is the author’s a ttitude to 58% of readers?A. Favorable.B. Uncaring.C. Doubtful.D. Friendly.第二节:七选五(共10小题,每小题2分,满分20分)阅读下面文章并根据语境,从所给出的七个选项(A、B、C、D、E、F、G)中,选出最佳选项,并将正确答案填涂到答题卡上,其中两项为多余选项。

You will find the answers immediately after each question.Passage:In an age where technology seems to be taking over every aspect of our lives, there remains one activity that has not been overshadowed by digital advancements: reading traditional books. Despite the popularity of e-books andaudiobooks, many people still prefer the tactile experience of holding a physical book and turning its pages. This preference for traditional books is not only due to nostalgia but also because of the unique benefits they offer.A recent study conducted by the National Reading Agency found that individuals who read physical books tend to have a better memory of the content compared to those who read the same material on digital devices. Furthermore, there is a growing concern about the impact of screen time on sleep patterns, with research suggesting that reading from screens before bedtime can negatively affect the quality of sleep. Physical books, on the other hand, do not emit blue light which can disrupt melatonin production, thus helping readers get a good night’s rest. Moreover, libraries and bookstores continue to thrive as communal spaces where people gather to share ideas and engage in discussions about literature. The atmosphere in these places fosters a sense of community and a love for reading that cannot be replicated online. While digital media offers convenience and access to a vast amount of information, it does not replace the unique experience of visiting a library or bookstore. In conclusion, while technology offers many conveniences, the tradition of reading physical books remains strong. It provides a way to disconnect from the digital world, improve memory retention, and foster social connections within communities.End of PassageQuestions:1、According to the passage, what is one benefit of reading physical books over digital devices?Answer: Better memory retention of the content.2、What potential negative effect on health is associated with reading from screens before bedtime?Answer: Disruption of sleep quality due to blue light affecting melatonin production.3、How do libraries and bookstores contribute to community life according to the text?Answer: They serve as communal spaces where people gather to share ideas and engage in discussions about literature.4、What does the passage suggest about the future of physical books despite technological advances?Answer: Physical books will remain significant as they offer ways to disconnect, improve memory, and foster social connections.四、阅读第二节(12.5分)Title: The Art of MeditationReading Passage:Meditation has been a part of human culture for thousands of years, serving as a means for relaxation, stress reduction, and spiritual growth. 2023年高二(上)英语期中试卷一上卷 外研版

外研版高二(上)英语期中试卷一-1第一部分、阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项.1.(6分)News anchors(主播)must have been reluctant to read out the following news:Xin Xiaomeng began working as the world's first female artificial(人工的)intelligence news anchor at Xinhua News Agency on Sunday, three months after a male robot joined the profession.Unlike previous news robots though,Xin does not read news like a cold machine;she reads it almost like a human being. The muscles on her face stretchand relax﹣and her reactions change as she continues reading. That's whymany news anchors were worried:Will AI replace us in the near future? To find the answer,we have to analyze the technologies that support Xin at her job.Three key technologies are used to support Xin.First, samples of human voices are collected and synthesized (合成).This is followed by the collection and synthesis of human muscle movement samples. And third the voices and movements are married in a way that when the AI news anchor reads, the micro﹣electric motors behind her face move to make her expressions seem more human.Yet we need a thorough knowledge of deep learning technology to make a robot imitate a person's voice. The developer needs to collect tens of thousands of pieces of pronunciations, input them into the machine and match them withthe text for the AI to learn and read. The process for imitating facial movements is similar. The developer has to analyze the movements of the53muscles in the human face, make a model set from the collected data for the AI news anchor to learn, and imitate the movements of facial muscles via programsBoth the technologies used to make Xin's performance impressive are mature. The real difficulty lies in the third﹣the technology to match the pronunciations with facial movements so that Xin's expressions vary according to the content of the news report. In fact,Xin's expressions don't always change according to the content. As a result, her expressions look anything but human.Actually,AI is still no match for human qualities.(1)What does the underlined word"reluctant"in the first paragraph mean?A.DelightedB.UnwillingC.ConfusedD.Optimistic(2)What can we infer about previous news robots?A.They read news without expressions.B.They looked like a human being.C.They could interview sports stars.D.They could interact with audience.(3)From the last paragraph,we can draw a conclusion that.A.human news anchors should learn from AI anchors to save their jobsB.Al anchors perform much better than human news anchors at presentC.Al news anchors won't replace human news anchors in the near futureD.Xin Xiaomeng's expressions vary so naturally that they are true to life2.(8分)For all the athletes, ages play an important role in their lives.Athletes all have their"golden years".For Argentine superstar soccer player Lionel Messi, who turned32earlier this year,"his best days are already recorded in the history books,"an article by news network RT said. However,Messi is still a surprising person. This year on September24,he won his sixth FIFA Men's Player of the Year award. No one has won this award as many times as he has.His win has come with some debate. Many expected the award to go to Liverpool defender(防守球员)Virgil van Dijk, who was named as the UEFA Men's Player of the Year in August. In addition,Messi's Argentine national team has not done so well. They lost the semi﹣finals of the Copa America tournament(锦标赛)in July and what's worse, they played poorly in the World Cup last year. However,Messi himself is still playing at a very high level. He scored51goals in50games last season. He continues to set records, such as earning the most La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles in the history of club Barcelona."I believe he should have won it.He carries Barcelona on his back, which he has done for years and years,"British soccer player Darren Bent told Sky Sports.Even his critics admit that he is still a powerful player."Messi is clearly still as strong and powerful a goal﹣scoring threat as he has been throughout his career,"the RT article said.Messi himself is confident about his future."My idea is to continue here for as long as I can perform well and my body allows me to do that,"he said in an interview for The18.(1)What do we know about Messi?A.He is still in his"golden years"as a soccer player.B.He has been playing soccer for over30years.C.He wrote an article about a story by news network RT.D.He's received the FIFA Men's Player of the Year award six times.(2)What do Paragraphs3and4tell us?A.Messi was named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year.B.Virgil van Dijk is a better soccer player than Messi.C.Some people have debated Messi's win.D.Messi isn't good at playing soccer any more.(3)According to Darren Bent,Messi is.A.skillfulB.attractiveC.responsibleD.strange(4)What do we know from the story?A.Messi and Virgil van Dijk are on the same team.B.Messi played51games last season.C.Messi has broken many of his own records.D.Messi has no plans to stop playing at present.3.(8分)As the international demand for narrative(叙事的)film/TV content continues to increase with popular streaming services like Netflix and others, the two questions then come:will the coming generations receive most of their entertainment through visual means rather than through the written word and will such an increase of narrative film/TV reduce the importance of reading?Growing examples of this trend include the diminishment(减少)of fiction in the common core(核心的)curriculum, the ever﹣rising culture of computer games, the wave of streaming services of wide international reach, and movies filled with special effects made for children and teenagers.Nor must we ignore the economic dangers that lie ahead for the written word. The narrative film industry is amoneymaker that dwarfs(使相形见绌)the publishing industry. The other underlying question,of course,is"does it really matter if the written word bows to the world of film/TV?"From my point of view, any diminishment of fiction delivered by words is a loss for mankind. There is no greater human feature than the imagination. It lies at the very soul of the humanspecies. It is the brain's most powerful engine. It is the essential muscle of life and like all muscles it must be exercised and strengthened.Writing and reading are the principal tools that inspire, create and empower ourimagination.Anything that diminishes that power is the enemy of mankind. It should be known that I am not opposed to new media and technological advances.Instead,I have always felt it necessary to adapt to advancing technology. In fact,a number of my novels are in various stages of development for film,TV,and live stage productions. My hope is that the written word will only stand to be complemented(补充)by its visual counterparts(对应物),not pushed to the edge of extinction.Of course, there are those who will present arguments for the superiority of the moving image over the written word. Each has its place. My argument is for finding the right balance between it and the moving image.(1)In what way does narrative film/TV embarrass the written word?A.Economic benefitsB.International reachC.Cultural influencecational importance(2)Why does the author value the role of the written word?A.It strengthens our muscles.B.It helps sharpen imagination.C.It distinguishes man from each other.D.It paves the way for narrative film/TV.(3)What is the author's attitude towards technology?A.CautiousB.SkepticalC.PositiveD.Critical(4)What's the author concerned about?A.The fate of reading.B.The extinction of fiction.C.The impact of the written word.D.The future of the moving image.4.(8分)Living gratefully has a huge transforming power, not just when something wonderful or special happens, but every day no matter what is happening.I've recently been involved with two people whose lives were challenged by bad luck.I have seen how grateful living had the power to keep one of them going and how it's beginning to lift the other. One wasa friend and the other is my sister. My friend seemed to be in good health when she received a deadly diagnosis:a disease with no effective treatment. She had all the emotions that a tragedy brings, but she also had a powerful response to despair(绝望)that gave her"the happiness that doesn't depend on what happens."She wrote online daily, honestly sharing the details of her situation. She wrote that even though it was difficult to move, this gave her more time to notice smallthings. She was grateful not only for the love and help of family and friends, but also for time to see the sun rise and watch the birds in her yard.No opportunity for gratefulness was wasted. She taught that gratefulness is not a false cheerfulness. It's taking every opportunity to celebrate the blessings of small things. We can be grateful for the challenges that help us develop sympathy for each other.Life is a precious gift. She repeatedly blogged that she was happier than she had ever been. When she wrote about"the worst day",she ended with"life is still a lovely gift."She died later that day.Her message, however, changed my sister's life.My sister's health was getting worse and worse, though nothing life﹣threatening. She did have a very painful knee. Her life was in danger from her defeated spirit. She was bed﹣bound(卧床不起),getting weaker and weaker.Fearful, angry and depressed, she felt out of options for recovery.I read my sister a few of my friend's messages.I was careful not to say,"Why can't you be more like her?"Instead,I let the words do their work.I'm grateful to say that an attitude of gratitude began to replace her anger and fear.I believe this helped her to heal.We can't be grateful for all that happens, but we can practice gratefulness for life itself, for all we can learn to deal with, for all the ways we can help each other grow and heal.(1)What happened when the author's friend found she had an incurable disease?A.She complained that life was unfair to her.B.She started to appreciate and enjoy the small things in life.C.She tried her best to look for treatment.D.She repeatedly blogged about how painful it was.(2)How did the author's sister feel when she was ill?A.Calm.B.Lonely.C.Sad.D.Confused.(3)What does the underlined"this"refer to in the article?A.Writing a blog.B.Eating healthy food.C.Talking with family.D.Being grateful for life.(4)What message does the article mainly convey?A.A friend in need is a friend indeed.B.Gratitude has the power of lifting people's spirits.C.Health is the most important thing for people.D.Families will always be there no matter what happens.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.5.(10分)Summer is all about sun,fun and beach (外研版)高中英语高二年级上册 期中测试试卷01及答案

期中测试一、阅读理解(共15题,每小题2分,总分30分)AFast-food chains including Burger King and Starbucks have brought in plant-based meat products in China in an effort to promote healthy eating and protect the environment. Readers share their opinions.Linda(China)I just don’t get it. If you want something that tastes like meat, you’d better eat meat. Plant-based meat is highly processed. It is not as healthy as vegetables. It contains unhealthy amounts of fat, salt and artificial additives. Regular exercise, along with a well-balanced diet, is the best way to stay healthy.Terryfoy(UK)Our human body was not designed for us only to eat vegetables. We are designed to eat meat. The protein that our body must have to survive comes from the meat we eat. Our bodies function properly with the correct balance of meat and vegetables. Too much meat and we get fat, too little meat and we get skinny and weak. If you want to be healthy, you must eat a balanced diet of both meat and vegetables.Taikor(Malaysia)Start with a huge cutdown on meat. Regarding pigs, do you know they could outsmart you on PlayStation games? Don’t be surprised. They’re much smarter than dogs. So they do better at video games than some primates(灵长类动物). Pigs are extremely clever animals. They’re gentle, defenseless creatures. Start doing it now. It’s time we made a change.Sockmonkey(Singapore)I could never be a vegetarian. I eat very little meat, but I love the meat I do eat! If one has to cut down on meat, it seems that red meat is the first thing to be minimized since it’s not as good for you as other types.1. What does Linda think of plant-based meat?A. Unhealthy.B. Necessary.C. Delicious.D. Well-balanced.2. Who suggests that humans have less red meat?A. Linda and Taikor.B. Linda and Terryfoy.C. Taikor and Sockmonkey.D. Terryfoy and Sockmonkey.3. What’s the main purpose of the passage?A. To introduce the harm of eating too much meat.B. To show us different opinions about eating meat.C. To inform us of the advantages of a balanced diet.D. To state the necessity of protecting the environment.BMoving to a foreign country is an amazing, life-changing experience. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, make yourself completely involved in a different culture and possibly learn another language. However, before embarking on such an adventure, there are some practical decisions that need to be made. One such decision is choosing where to live. For me, choosing to live with a French family was the best choice I made, and here is why.Firstly, a family can show you around the city or town and help you settle in, stopping you from feeling lonely. When you’re in a new environment with people you don’t know who are speaking a language you’re still not fluent in, you might feel lost, tired and homesick — I know I did. However, my host family were wonderful and welcoming; they showed me which buses to take to get to work and cooked dinner for me so we could eat together, and took me with them on trips to the beach, the theatre and even a bullfight. These were great opportunities to experience French culture and build relationships, which in turn helped me feel more comfortable and welcome. Moreover, living with French people has been brilliant for helping me improve my language skills. Being constantly exposed to authentic French conversation has allowed me to learn new phrases, widen my vocabulary and even improve my accent. My host family are happy to answer my questions and correct me when I say things wrong, which makes me a better and more confident French speaker. Finally, the experience of living abroad is one that you will remember forever, and perhaps the friendships — like the memories — will also last. Your host family might become your friends for life. You might return for their birthdays, weddings, holidays, and much more. I hope to remain in contact with my host family long after I leave France because when I was away from my friends and loved ones, they welcomed me and made me part of their family.4. What does the underlined phrase “embarking on” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Remarking on.B. Setting about.C. Depending on.D. Putting about.5. Where did the writer choose to live when moving to a foreign country?A. In a dormitory.B. In his own apartment.C. In a host family.D. In his friend’s house.6. What is the advantage of living with French people?A. Improving his French skills.B. Feeling homesick and lonely.C. Making friends from different countries.D. Introducing English culture to the French.7. How does the writer develop the passage?A. By making comparisons.B. By following the order of time.C. By following the order of importance.D. By listing detailed reasons.CIt is reported that a record-breaking high-speed rail will connect Inner Mongolia in the north to Hainan in the south. According to the Shaanxi Development and Reform Commission, the proposed line will operate at a speed of 350 kilometers per hour(217 mph).Beginning in Inner Mongolia’s Baotou city and running through southern Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi and Guangdong, its final stop would be in Haikou city on Hainan Island,China’s southernmost province.Though the exact length of the proposed route has not been released,it will likely become the world’s longest high-speed rail line as the journey by road between Baotou and Haikou is approximately 3,000 kilometers(1,864 miles)long. Currently, the world’s longest high-speed rail line is almost 2,300 kilometers long(1,429miles),running from Beijing to Guangzhou. The proposed rail is part of China’s aim to create another “Silk Road of the 21st Century” and improve the country’s transportation network while driving land development and urbanization(城市化)in some provincial areas. Many of the provinces through which the high-speed trains will travel are near major bodies of water, such as the Yellow River in Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi province, the Yangtze River in Hubei and the South China Sea, where the line would end. It will also take passengers to popular tourist attractions including Zhangjiajie, Xi’an, Guilin and minority areas in western Hunan and Hubei.“The country is now shifting its focus and investing in the western regions and economically underdeveloped areas, making up for China’s long debt to these areas,” Tan yuzhi, professor of the School of Economics and Management at Hubei University for Nationalities, told local media. “The project will significantly narrow regional disparities(差异)and solve minority issues.”However,Deng Hongbing, director of China University of Geosciences’ Center for Regional Economic and Investment Center, said that if the north-to-south railway is to go ahead, there needs to be a sound ecological program in place to ensure the protection of these underdeveloped and ecologically sensitive areas.8. What is the passage mainly talking about?A. China has decided to invest in the western areas.B. Another high-speed train line is being planned.C. The train will speed up to 350 kilometers per hour.D. China has produced the best high-speed train line.9. How many provinces will the proposed line cross?A. 9B. 8C. 7D. 610. Once the high-speed rain line is built,________.A. it will be the most convenient high-speed rail line in ChinaB. it will benefit the underdeveloped areas a lot in the westC. it will transport goods faster from north to southD. it will do good to the environment alongside the line11. What is Tan Yuzhi’s attitude towards the proposed project?A. SupportiveB. Doubtful.C. Puzzled.D. Negative.DAsk someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not bring so much material home in the first place. The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary. There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.12. What does the underlined word “over-consumption” refer to?A. Using too much packaging.B. Recycling too much waste.C. Making more products than necessary.D. Having more material than is needed.13. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show ________.A. the tendency of cutting household wasteB. the increase of packaging recyclingC. the rapid growth of supermarketsD. the fact of packaging overuse14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality.B. Supermarkets care more about packaging.C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging.D. Other products are better packaged than food.15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult.B. Needless material is mostly recycled.C. People like collecting recyclable waste.D. The author is proud of his consumer culture.二、七选五(共5题,每小题2分,总分10分)Things You Should Stop Doing to Be SuccessfulAre you a happy person? I think chemistry is a very important field because it helps explain the world around us. Chemistry has given us the ability to produce enough food to feed the world’s people and to develop drugs to treat diseases.Last week, I attended an important meeting in Germany. All together there were 625 young scientists from 77 different countries attending. While I was there, I got to know two other young scientists. One was Laura. Laura grew up in Argentina and studied in Britain. She is now working in a lab in Germany. She told me that what inspired her to be a scientist were some books her mom gave her. Those books explained many scientific questions. The other was Ben. He is a young researcher who grew up in South Africa. He said it was his love of insects that got him interested in science.I’m so glad I had the chance to meet so many other young people who are interested in science. I hope more young people will be inspired to study science in the future.。

A英语试题第3页共14页My son was a second grader. He went to school by bus every day. He was the first student on in the morning, as we were farthest from school, and the last student off in the evening. I was a teacher myself and it was a comfort to realize the school staff (职员) were all working as hard as I was to provide a safe learning environment. One day I came home from work and waited for my son to get home for a long time. Then I called the school. “Perhaps he’s just a bit late,” said the secretary. “I will call the driver to see if those children are home.” A few minutes later, I answered the phone to hear that the other students were home. Then I called his friends’ parents, to see if perhaps he had gotten off at their stop to play. The answers were all “No.”By that time, it was dark and I was scared. My home was in the mountain areas, and it was said that a wolf had come up somewhere. My husband wasn’t at home, so I forced myself to calm down and decided to go out to look for him. I was about to go out when the telephone rang; it was from the driver. “He’s okay,” I heard. “He was asleep on the seats in the back, under a couple of jackets. Since it’s dark, can he spend the night with my family?”I was relieved and agreed. Since my son had a great adventure, the school started giving a copy of the list to the driver, so he could check off the children’s names when they got off the bus. Singaporeans, even those of the same ethnic group (少数民族), have many different first languages and cultures. For example, within the Singaporean Chinese group, nearly a third speak English as their home language while almost half speak Standard Chinese as their home language and the rest speak various Chinese dialects (方言) as their home language. Due to these reasons, the English fluency level of people in Singapore varies vastly from person to person. Most reasonably educated Singaporeans do speak Singapore Standard English, alternatively known as Educated Singapore English, which, grammatically, is not different from standard British English, with changes being limited to accent and a few borrowed words, causing few challenges to any native Britons.Singapore English derives (起源) its roots from the 146 years of British colonial rule over Singapore until its independence in 1965. Before 1965, the standard form of English in Singapore had always been British English. After Singapore declared independence, English in Singapore began to take a life of its own, leading to the development of modern Singapore English.English had been the official language of the colonial government, and when Singapore gained self-government in 1959, the local government decided to keep English as the main language in order to help develop economy. The use of English as the nation’s first l anguage serves to bridge the gap between different ethnic groups in Singapore. English is the global language for commerce, technology andscience, and improvement ofdevelopmentand it becomes important part of the global economy. There is an increasing trend of Singaporeans speaking English at home. For children who started primary school in 2009, 60% of Chinese along with 60% Indian pupils and 35% of Malay pupils mainly speak English at home. Because many Singaporeans grew up with English as their first language in school, some Singaporean Chinese may not be able to speak Standard Chinese.39. How many people in Singapore are native?A. Locks of Love is an organization that helps kids deal with their hair loss by providing real hair wigs (假发) from donors.Jessica Moon, a photo editor, donates her hair whenever she cuts it, waiting each time for it to grow the necessary 10 inches.“I don’t miss my hair at all,” Moon said. “And it grows really quickly.”At Locks of Love, the focus is on helping kids who have gone bald(秃头的) and英语试题第8页共14页feel embarrassed to go out in public to go on with the activities they normally enjoy. Lauren Kukkamaa, who works for the organization, believes that it is important for kids to live out their lives as normally as possible.“Many times, a lot of children feel embarrassed by their baldness,” she said. “They have low self-confidence, so they may want to stop playing sports or going to summer camps. When they get the hair wigs, they feel confident to start doing these things again.”“For a don or, I think it’s a very personal donation,” said Kukkamaa. “You’re giving of yourself. If you’re looking for a way to get involved and give back, Ithink it’s a great opportunity for someone.”Moon, who first donated her hair when she was 15 after she found out her father had cancer, said donating is a good way to make a difference.“The best part is that it’s helpful for someone and it does make a difference for patients who need the hair,” she said.43. As a result, they are turning to clotheslines as part of the “what-I-can-do environmentalism.”On the other side are people who are against drying clothes outside, arguingthat clotheslines are unpleasant to look at. They have persuaded Homeowners Associations (HOAs) across the U.S. to ban outdoor clotheslines, because clothesline drying also tends to lower home value in the neighborhood. This has led to a Right-to-Dry Movement that is calling for laws to be passed to protect people’s right to use clotheslines. So far, only three states have laws to protect clotheslines. Right-to-Dry supporters argue that there should be more.Matt Reck, 37, is the kind of eco-conscious person who feeds his trees with bathwater and reuses water drops from his air conditioners to water plants. His family also uses a clothesline. But on July 9, 2007, the HOA in Wake Forest, North Carolina, told him that a dissatisfied neighbor had telephoned them about his clothesline. The Recks paid no attention to the warning and still dried their clothes on a line in the yard. “Many people say they are environmentally friendly but they don’t take matters in their own hands,” says Reck. The local HOA has decided not to take any action, unless more neighbors come to them.North Carolina lawmakers are saying that banning clotheslines is not the right英语试题第10页共14页thing to do. But HOAs and housing businesses believe that clothesline drying reminds people of poor neighborhoods. They worry that if buyers think their future neighbors can’t even afford dryers, housing prices will fall.Environmentalists say such worries are not necessary, and in view of global warming, that idea needs to change. As they say, “The clothesline is beautiful. Hanging clothes outside should be encouraged. We all have to do at least something to slow down the process of global warming.”47. One of the reasons why supporters of clothes dryers are trying to banclothesline drying is that ____.A. clothes dryers are more efficientB. clothes dryers are energy-savingC. clothesline drying is not allowed in most U.S. statesD. clothesline drying reduces home value48.
