Football links between the UK and china
As the hosts of the next two Olympic Games, the UK and China are quickly forming a relation ship. British football clubs have begun to develop links and joint activities with clubs in the Chinese football leagues. Here are some of the main events so far.
In 2006, Sheffield United Football Club bought 90% of the Chengdu Five Bull Football Club. It was the first foreign club to own more than 50% of a Chinese club. The club now has a new name: Chengdu Sheffield United.
Stockport County Football Club now has links with the Football Club in Liaoning. Their name is, Stockport Tiger Star.
Bolton Wanderers Football Club has become the new partner of Wuhan Football Club. This partnership involves exchanging training ideas and players. Later this year the partners will open a centre for football development in Wuhan.
Everton Football Club is working closely with Ningbo and Guangzhou sports authorities. This joint venture includes several small projects aimed at developing football for young people and training football coaches.
Cardiff City is developing a partnership with Xiamen Superleague Club, Lanshi. The two cities are …twins‟ and are therefore developing many links and joint activities to encourage contact between the people of the two cities.
Britain has also invited several Chinese players to play in its professional football league. Dalian player, Sun Jihai, became the first Chinese player to score a goal in a Premiership match when he joined Manchester City Football Club in 2002. Since then other Chinese players have joined English football teams, Li Tie has joined the Everton Football Club and Dong Fangzhuo the Manchester United Football Club.
These exciting developments are just the beginning of more positive international relations in the world of football. Watch this space for further developments.
