Annealing is a way of making metal softer by heating it and then letting it cool very slowly. If metal is heated and then cooled very quickly, for example by dipping (浸) it in water, it will be very hard but also very brittle-that is, it will break easily. Metal that has been annealed is soft but does not break as easily. It is possible to make metal as hard or as soft as it is wished, by annealing it. The metal is heated, and allowed to cool slowly for a certain length of time. The longer the heated metal takes to cool slowly, the softer it becomes. Annealing can also be used on other material, such as glass.

1、Imagine that you are on a jury and you hear the testimony of an eyewitness who says that the accused person is guilty。

You would probably vote to convict the accused, don’t you think?Well, more often than not, you’d be wrong。

The underlined words“to convict the accused”probably means——A.to show that the accused is wrongB.to express that the accused person is true。

C.to declare that the accused person is guilty。

D.to explain that the eyewitness is dangerous。

“The testimony of an eyewitness who says that the accused person is guilty, you would”,so the answer is C。

In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English,Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.根据构词法知识可知,-zation为动词构成名词的后缀,意为“……化”,因此,可猜测industrialization为“工业化”之意,而globalization的含义为_全球化__。

(2)利用同义近义词猜词在生词所出现的上下文中,有时会出现与之同义或近义的词语或结构,这时可从熟悉的词语中推知生词的含义。

表示同义近义的信号词/词组常见的有:and,or,similarly,likewise 等。

例题:By translating the rich and humorous text of Lo v e's Labour's Lost into the physical language of BSL, Deafinitely Theatre creates a new interpretation of Shakespeare's comedy and aims to build a bridge between deaf and hearing worlds by performing to both groups as one audience.根据上文“By translating the rich and humourous text of Love's Labour's Lost into the physical language of BSL”中的translating可知,interpretation与translating同义,意为:_翻译__。

The young quickly answered, I“Yes,sir.”

1. We can infer from this passage(paragraph, fact, example, evidence... ) that2. It may be inferred from this passage (paragraph...) that...3. 阅读理解之猜词题近年来全国统一高考中加大了对考生猜词义能力的考查,因此,掌握一定的猜词技巧,对突破高考阅读理解、提高我们的英语语言能力都有非常重要的意义。

这种题常见的提问方式有:The word “…”in paragraph …can best be replaced by …….The underlined word “…”most probably means ….By saying “…”, the author means …The expression “…”is closest to …According to the passage, the phrase “…”suggests …The underlined part “……”(in Para. …)means …..

定义常用的谓语动词多为:be, mean, deal with, be considered, to be, be called, define, represent, refer to, signify 等。

例如:(05 湖北卷A段)Do you know what a “territory”is ? A territory is an area that an animal ,usually the male, claims(声称)as its own.由定义可推知,这里territory指的是:(04 浙江卷B段)Green building means “reducing the impact (影响)of the building on the land”.由定义我们可以推断这里Green building 指的是:2.根据复述推测词义虽然复述不如定义那样严谨、详细,但是它提供的信息可以为阅读者猜测词义提供依据,至少读者可以根据复述猜测生词的大致“义域”(意义范围)。
