High-carbon
steel: Tools made from highcarbon steels, 0.80 to 1.3%, are used for small-quantity production of wood parts or machining soft materials such as freecutting steels and brass. It is important that the operational temperatures be kept below 400℉ because the material loses its hardness above this temperature. For this reason coolants should be used freely.
High-speed
steels may be made by the powder metallurgy process. This process uses no binder. In that respect it differs from the carbides. The materials are melted, atomized into powdered particles, compacted, sintered, and heat treated to desired hardness. These HSS have better tool properties than those of conventional HSS materials.
It should be noted that some hardened materials will retain their hardness after being subjected to high temperatures during the cutting operation and cooled to room temperature. Such tool materials are ceramics, carbides, cast materials, and highspeed steel(HSS) up to 1000℉. Carbon steel loses its hardness almost immediately upon being cooled from elevated to room temperature.

Now people often talk about “feedback” as being an essential factor of the new in dustrial techniques, upon which is based an automatic self-regulating system and by virtue of which any deviation in the system from desired conditions can be det ected, measured , reported and corrected. When “feedback” is applied to the proc ess by which a large digital computer runs at the immense speed through a long s eries of sums, constantly rejecting the answers until it finds one to fit a complex set of facts that have been put to it, it is perhaps different in degree from what we have previously been accustomed to machines. But “feedback”, as such, is a famil iar mechanical conception. The old-fashioned steam engine was fitted with a cent rifugal governor, two balls on levers spinning round and round an upright shaft. I f the steam pressure rose and the engine started to go too fast, the increased spee d of the spinning governor caused it to rise up the vertical rod and shut down a va lve. This cut off some of the steam and thus the engine brought itself back to its p roper speed. The mechanization, which was introduced with the Industrial Revolution, beca use it was limited to individual processes, required the employment of human lab or to control each machine as well as to load and unload materials and transfer th em from one place to another. The individual reliability of machine elements becomes the basis for estimating the overall life expectancy of a complete machine. Many machine elements are thoroughly standardized. Testing and practical experience have established the most suitable dimensions for common structural and mechanical parts. Through standardization, uniformity of practice and resulting economics are obtained. Not all machine parts in use are standardized, however. In the automotive industry only fasteners, bearings, bushings, chains, and belts are standardized. Crankshafts and connecting rods are not standardized.

（1）Apply ingenuity to utilize desired physical properties and to limit undesired ones. ［3］The performance requirements of a machine are met by utilizing laws of nature or properties of matter (e.g.， flexibility，strength，gravity，inertia，buoyancy，centrifugal force， principles of the lever and inclined plane，friction，viscosity，fluid pressure，and thermal expansion)，also the many electrical，optical， thermal，and chemical phenomena. However，what may be useful in one application may be detrimental in the next. For example，flexibility is desirable in valve springs but not in the valve camshaft；friction is desirable at the clutch face but not in the clutch bearing. Ingenuity in design should be applied to utilize and control the physical properties that are desirable and to minimize those that are not desirable.
