Ray Tokuda, a 54﹣year﹣old Japanese American, is proud of the title his school has given him. He is a Shifu, a Chinese word literally meaning a master, mentor or senior practioner of martial arts.Tokuda has reason to be proud. He has been involved with Chinese martial arts for almost four decades. After learning them at the martial arts school in New MexicoState, today he is among the most experienced kung fu teachers of the school.Practicing martial arts two to three hours and helping students improve their skills have become Tokuda's daily routine. He expects to practice and teach martial arts for the rest of his life. "I'm still learning. It's worth more than a lifetime to learn Chinese martial arts, "he said. "Once I started, I just couldn't stop. I think it's also the magic of Chinese culture."Tokuda was sent to the martial arts school when he was 10. He still remembers how unwilling he was when starting out. "My father had always wanted to learn Chinese martial arts but never got the chance, so he put his kid in, " he said. "I was so afraid at that time because I thought kung fu was all about fighting."But things changed after he learned that martial arts were more than punching and kicking. "One of the things martial arts teach me is overcoming adversity, " Tokuda said. "As alittle kid, my first lesson was like, oh, look, this is a thing that I can get through by diligence, perseverance(毅力)and dedication, and that was priceless for my life."Learning Chinese martial arts opened a gateway for him to better understand Chinese culture because he could hear a lot of ancient Chinese kung fu﹣related stories. "It is like in America, where we hear stories about knights in shining armor and King Arthur and noble deeds done, " he said. "I feel martial arts preserve something of ancient China that can't be found in books. They are sort of an oral history."Tokuda has also been invited to various events in his home state to showcase traditional Chinese culture, including the dragon dance and lion dance, which he also learnt at the martial arts school. But is it actually true? Jessika Golle of the University of Tubingen, in Germany reports in Psychological Science this week that those who have been to university indeed seem to leave with broader and more curious minds than those who have spent their immediate post-school years in vocational (职业的)training for work. However, it was not the case that university broadened minds. Rather, vocational training for work seemed to have narrowed them. The result is not quite what might be expected.Dr. Golle came to this conclusion after she and a team of colleagues studied the early careers of 2,095 German youngsters. The team used two standardized tests to assess their volunteers' personality traits(特点)including openness, conscientiousness(认真)and soon, and attitudes such as realistic, investigative and enterprising twice, once towards the end of each volunteer's time at high school, and then again six years later. Of the original group, 382 had to make a choice between the academic and vocational routes, and it was on these that the researchers focused. University beckoned for 212 of them. The remaining 170 chose vocational training and a job. When it came to the second round of tests, Dr. Golle found that the personalities of both groups had not changed significantly. As for changes in attitude, again, none were noticeable in the university group. However, those who had chosen the vocational route showed marked drops in interest in tasks that are investigative and enterprising in nature. And that might restrict their choice of careers. The changes in attitude that the researchers recorded were more worrying. Vocational training has always been what Germany prides itself on. Dr. Golle is correct, and changes in attitude brought about by the very training are narrowing people's choices, that is indeed a matter worthy of serious consideration.(1)What does Dr. Golle's research suggest?A Going to university is a mind-broadening experience.B College students pride themselves on their education.C Working straight after school narrows people's minds.D Attending university has apparent effects on personalities.(2)What does the underlined phrase "beckoned for" in Paragraph 2 mean?A Examined.B Attracted.C Organized.D Recognized.(3)What can we learn about vocational training?A It is essential to scientific research.B It leads to marked change in personality.C It helps to broaden the volunteers' minds.D It causes less interest in investigative jobs.(4)What is the author's attitude towards the finding?A Skeptical.B Optimistic.C Concerned.D Unclear.6.Smile! It makes everyone in the room feel better because they, consciously or unconsciously, are smiling with you. Growing evidence shows that an instinct for facial mimicry(模仿)allows us to experience other people's feelings. If we can't mirror another person's face, it limits our ability to read and properly react to their expressions. A review of this emotional mirroring appears on February 11 in Trends in Cognitive Sciences. On their paper, Paula Niedenthal and Adrienne Wood, social psychologists at the University of Wisconsin, describe how people in social situations copy others' facial expressions to create emotional responses in themselves. For example, if you're with a friend who looks sad, you might "try on" that sad face yourself without realizing you're doing so. In "trying on" your friend's expression, it helps you to recognize what they're feeling by connecting it with times in the past when you made that expression. Humans get this emotional meaning from facial expressions in a matter of only a few hundred milliseconds."You reflect on your emotional feelings and then you produce some sort of recognition judgment, and the most important thing that results in is that you take the appropriate action—you approach the person or you avoid the person," Niedenthal says. "Your own emotional reaction to the face changes your understanding of how you see the face in such a way that provides you with more information about what it means."A person's ability to recognize and "share" others' emotions can be prevented when they can't mimic faces. This is a common complaint for people with motor diseases, like facialparalysis(瘫痪)from a stroke, or even due to nerve damage from plastic surgery. Niedenthal notes that the same would not be true for people who suffer from birth, because if you've never had the ability to mimic facial expressions, you will have developed another ways of interpreting emotions.Niedenthal next wants to explore what part in the brain is functioning to help with facial expression recognition. A better understanding of that part, she says, will give us a better idea of how to treat related disorders.(1)According to the passage, facial mimicry helps ________.A convey one's own feelings clearlyB change others' emotions quicklyC respond to others' expressions properlyD develop friendship with others easily(2)Which parts explain how people copy others' facial expressions?A Paragraph 1 and 2.B Paragraph 2 and 3.C Paragraph 3 and 4.D Paragraph 4 and 5.(3)According to Niedenthal, what will be the next focus of the study?A When is the best time to treat brain disorders.B How many kinds of facial expressions people have.C How our brain helps us with emotional mirroring.D What part in the brain helps recognize facial expressions.(4)What is the purpose of writing the passage?A To discuss why people like smiling to others.B To draw people's attention to those with motor diseases.C To introduce a new trend in facial expressionrecognition. D To explain how people mirror others' facial expressions.三、七选五7.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Though the androids have proved useful at performing ordinary tasks, they are not ready for the greatest time. At least that appears to be the case atJapan’s Henn-na Hotel chain where over half of the robot staff are being replaced by humans. The first location of the unique hotel opened in July 2015 was atNagasaki’s Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park. The hotel’s owner, Hideo Sawada, promised the hotel to be managed primarily by robots. Guests were greeted and checked-in by a dinosaur robot, while a cute android called Churi, placed inside each room, provided information about attractions. Not surprisingly, the lodging, recognized in 2016 as the world’s first robot-staffed hotel by Guinness World Records, drew in curious visitors from all around the world. But as the years have passed, the hotel’s main draw is becoming less novel and more unsatisfactory. Also as the robots are “aging”, they are costing more to repair. Among the 283 androids being replaced are the chain’s two dinosaur receptionists. In addition to scaring young guests, they are also unable to photocopy guests’ passports, forcing human employees to step in each time. Also out are the cute Churi robots, which annoyed guests by interrupting their conversations. For example, one guest told The Wall Street Journal that Churi mistook hissnoring for a command and kept asking him to repeat his request all night.Sawada told The Wall Street Journal, “When you actually use robots you realize there are places where they aren’t needed—or just annoy people.” While Sawada may be cutting back on his use of androids, the recently-opened Smart LYZ Hotel and the Fly Zoo Hotel inChina, are run entirely by robots, with not a human in sight. Whether the employees have more competence than those “hired” by the Henn-na Hotel chain remains to be seen.8. What makesJapan’s Henn-na Hotel unique?A. Its robot employees.B. Its advanced equipment.C. Its convenient location.D. Its successful management.9. What is the author’s purpose with the example in paragraph 3?A. To entertain readers.B. To prove Churi’s drawback.C. To introduce Churi’s functions.D. To persuade people not to book the hotel.10. What does the owner ofJapan’s Henn-na Hotel think of his robot staff now?A. Attractive.B. Costly.C. Pioneering.D. Disappointing.11. What is the best title for the text?A. Robots Are Taking Over the World.B. The Boom of Robots-staffed Hotel.C. Robot Staff Are Fired For No Competence.D. The First Robots-staffed Hotel Won Guinness World Record.DMany teens may feel anxious sometimes. It’s the kind of nervousness that makes you bite your nails before a big test. We spend more time online than we should. We feel good about ourselves or bad based on how many Likes and Followers we get on social media. Young people are developing a false view of life.On the screen, we see what people want to show us. People usually only post photos where they are looking their best. They are surrounded by friends and seem that they are having a great time. No one seems sad or lonely. In short, life isfabulous. But sooner or later, our young people compare their real life to it. They find that theirs doesn’t seem as fun or exciting and grow worried that they may be missing out.No wonder teachers are reporting more anxious students. It’s reported that a lot more college students feel ―overwhelming anxiety. The percentage jumped from 50% in 2011 to 62% in 2016. Anxiety is now the most common mental-health problem in my country. It affects nearly one-third of teens and adults.Certainly, we can’t blame it on social media alone. We expect toomuch from our children and a lot of these expectations aren’t reasonable. Their schedules are packed with sports, clubs and homework. They don’t have enough free time. We want our children to succeed, and we don’t care how much it costs. As parents, we must have more balance. On one hand, we push too hard, and on the other hand, we make life too easy for children. We shouldn’t and can’t promise our children that they will always be happy. We shouldn’t try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.12. What is the text mainly about?A. What causes teens’ nervousness.B. How to deal with teens’ anxiety.C. What a view of life means to people.D. How to treat social media appropriately.13. What does the underlined word “fabulous” in paragraph 2 mean?A. Wonderful.B. Encouraging.C. Anxious.D. Doubtful.14. Why does the author mention the numbers in paragraph 3?A. To draw teachers’ attention.B. To show teachers’ mental problems.C. To present the seriousness of teens’ anxiety.D. To show adults have more problems than teens.15. What should parents do to help their children out?A. Try to meet their expectations.B. Help them with their homework.C. Give them more free time to play sports.D. Allow them to solve their own problems in life.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Hi, David, it’s me, Jackie. How’s it going? I guess you’re at work and you don’t have your phone on, right? OK, here are the instructions to get to Jimmy’s house for the party. Are you going to drive there? If you do, drive straight on Forest Road until you get to the motorway. Drive along Brownsville and take Exit 13A. Yeah, That’s 13A. You drive down the road there and turn left. It’s the first big house on the right. OK? If you’re taking a bus, there are couple of options. You can take the number 80 bus, which I recommend, as it stops right in front of your office building. You may also take Bus 57, which will give you a bit of walk. Either way, you are going to get off at Brownsville. Call me when you get there and someone can pick you up. I can’t wait. This is going to be so much fun!
