The question of whether our government shoul d promote science and technol ogy or the liberal arts in higher education is not an either/ or proposition(命题),although the current emphasis on preparing young Americans for STEM (science, technol ogy, engineering, maths)-related fields can make it seem that way.The latest congressional report acknowl edges the critical importance of technical training, but also stresses that the study of the humanities and social sciences must remain central elements of American’s educational system at all levels. Both are critical to producing citizens who can participate effectively in our democratic society, become innovative lead ers, and benefit from the spiritual enrichment that the refl ection on the great id eas of mankind over time provides.Parents and students who have invested heavily in higher education worry about graduates’ job prospects(前景) as technol ogical advances and changes in d omestic and global markets transform professions in ways that reduce wages and cut jobs. Und er this circumstances, it’s natural to look for what may appear to be the most “practical” way out of the probl em. “Major in a subject designed to get you a job” seems the obvious answer to some, though this ignores the fact that many disciplines in the humanities characterized as “soft” often, in fact, lead to empl oyment and success in the l ong run. The ability to draw upon every available tool and insight-picked up from science, arts, and technol ogy- to solve the problems of the future, and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, will be helpful to them and the United States.8.What does the latest congressional report suggest?A.Higher education shoul d be adjusted to the practical needs of society.B.The liberal arts in higher education help enrich stud ents’ spiritual life.C.STEM-related subjects help students find jobs in the information society.D.The humanities and STEM subjects should be given equal importance.9.What does the author say about the so called soft subjects?A.They are essential to stud ents’ healthy growth.B.They improve stud ents’ communication skills.C.They broaden students range of interests.D.They benefit stud ents in their future life.10.What is the main concern of students when they choose a major?A.The academic value of the courses.B.Their interest in relevant subjects.C.Their chances of getting a good job.D.the quality of education to receive.11.What advice does the author give to college stud ents?A.Try to take a variety of practical courses.B.Prepare themselves for different job options.C.Ad opt a fl exible approach to solving problems.D.Seize opportunities to tap their potential.School Counseling(咨询)In our grandparents' time, it was unthinkable. In our parents' time, it was unusual and nobody spoke openly about counseling. These days, more and more schools are asking for this service and it is consid ered a necessity for most. Why is it? I can well remember that there was atime when a deep blue sky, the song of the birds, moonlight and flowers could never have kept me spellbound. That ’s changed since I was here.⋯For example, when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half pasteleven one evening in order to have a good look at the moon for once by myself. Butas the moon gave far too much light, I didn ’t dare open a window. Another time somemonths ago, I happened t o be upstairs one evening when the window was open. Ididn ’g t o downstairs until the window had to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, thewind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a year and a half that I ’d seen the night face to face ⋯⋯Sadly⋯I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtains hanging before verydusty windows. It ’s npol e asure looking through these any longer because nature isone thing that really must be experienced.Yours,AnneUsing Language 语言运用Reading and listening 读与听1 Read the letter that Lisa wrote to Miss Wang of Radio for Teenagers and predictwhat Miss Wang will say. Later in the next century, people from Englandmade voyages to conquer other parts of the world and because of that, English beganto be spoken in many other countries. Today, more people speak English as their first, second or foreign language than ever before.Native English speakers can understand each other even if they don ’t speak the samkind of English. Look at this example:British Betty: Would you like to see my flat?American Amy: Yes, I ’d like to come up to your apartment. So why has English changed over time? Actually all languages change and developwhen cultures meet and communicate with each other. At first the English spoken inEngland between about AD 450 and 1150 was very different from the English spoken today. It was based more on German than the English we speak at present. Thengradually between about AD 800 and 1150, English became less like German becausethose who ruled England spoken first Danish and later French. These new settlers enriched the English language and especially its vocabulary. So by the 1600’sShakespeare wasable to make use of a wider vocabulary than ever before. In 1620some British settlers moved to America. Later in the 18th century some British peoplewere taken to Australia too. English began to be spoken in both countries. Finally by the 19th century the language was settled. At that time two big changes in English spelling happened: first Samuel Johnson wrote his dictionary and later NoahWebster wrote The American Dictionary of the English Language. The latter gave a separate identity to American English spelling.English now is also spoken as a foreign or second language in South Asia. Forexample, India has a very large number of fluent English speakersbecauseBritainruled India from 1765 to 1947. During that time English became the language forgovernment and education. English is also spoken in Singapore and Malaysia andcountries in Africa such as South Africa. Today the number of people learning Englishin China is increasing rapidly. In fact, China may have the largest number of Englishlearners. Will Chinese English develop its own identity? Only time will tell.STANDARD ENGLISH AND DIALECTSWhat is standard English? Is it spoken in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia,India and New Zealand? Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. Many people believe the English spoken on TV and the radio is standard English. This is because in the early days of radio, those who reported the news were expectedto speak excellent English. However, on TV and the radio you will hear differences inthe way people speak. When people use words and expressions different form “standard language ”, itcalled a dialect. American English has many dialects, especially the midwestern, southern, African American and Spanish dialects. Even in some parts of the USA, two people from neighbouring towns speak a little differently. American English has somany dialects because people have come from all over the world.Geography also plays a part in making dialects. Some people who live in themountains of the eastern U SA speak with an older kind of English dialect. WhenAmericans moved form one place to another, they took their dialects with them. Sopeople from the mountains in the southeasternUSA speak with almost the samedialect as people in the northwestern USA. The USA is a large country in which manydifferent dialects are spoken. Although many Americans move a lot, they still recognize and understand each other ’s dialects.第三单元Travel journalJOURNEY DOWN THE MEKONG PART 1 THEDREAM AND THE PLANMy name is Wang Kun. Ever since middle school, my sister Wang Wei and Ihave dreamed about taking a great bike trip. Two years ago she bought an expensivemountain bike and then she persuaded m e to buy one. Last year, she visited ourcousins, Dao Wei and Yu Hang at their college in Kunming. They are Dai and grew upin western Yunnan Province near the Lancang River, the Chinese part of the river thatis called the Mekong River in other countries. Wang Wei soon got them interested incycling too. After graduating from college.we finally got the chance to take a bike trip.I asked my sister, "Where are we going?" It was my sister who first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River from where it begins to where it ends. Now sheis planning our schedule for the trip.I am fond of my sister but she has one serious shortcoming. She can be reallystubborn. Although she didn't know the best way of getting to places, she insisted thatshe organize the trip properly. Now, I know that the proper way is always her way. Ikept asking her, "When are we leaving and when are we coming back?" I asked herwhether she had looked at a map yet. Of course, she hadn't; my sister doesn't careabout details. So I told her that the source of the Mekong is in Qinghai Province. Shegave me a determined look—the kind that said she would not change her mind. WhenI told her that our journey would begin at an altitude of more than 5,000 metres, sheseemed to be excited about it. When I told her the air would be hard to breathe and itwould be very cold, she said it would be an interesting experience. I know my sisterwell. Once she has made up her mind, nothing can change it. Finally, I had to give in.Several months before our trip,Wang Wei and I went to the library. We found alarge atlas with good maps that showed details of world geography. From the atlas wecould see that the Mekong River begins in a glacier on a Tibetan mountain. At first theriver is small and the water is clear and cold. Then it begins to move quickly. Itbecomesrapids as it passesthrough deep valleys, travelling across w estern YunnanProvince. Sometimes the river becomes a waterfall and enters wide valleys. We wereboth surprised to learn that half of the river is in China. After it leaves China and thehigh altitude, the Mekong becomes wide, brown and warm. As it enters Southeast Asia, its pace slows. It makes wide bends or meanders t hrough low valleys to the plains where rice grows. At last, the river delta enters the South China Sea.JOURNEY DOWN THE MEKONGPART 2 A NIGHT IN THE MOUNTAINSAlthough it was autumn, the snow was already beginning to fall in Tibet. Our legswere so heavy and cold that they felt like blocks of ice. Have you ever seen snowmenride bicycles? That's what we looked like! Along the way children dressed i n longwool coats stopped to look at us. In the late afternoon we found it was so cold that ourwater bottles froze. However, the lakes shone like glass in the setting sun and lookedwonderful.Wang Wei rode in front of me as usual. She is very reliable and I knew Idid't need to encourage her.To climb the mountains was hard work but as we looked around us,we were surprised by the view.We seemed to be able to see for miles. At onepoint we were so high that we found ourselves cycling through clouds. Then we began going down the hills. It was great fun especially as it gradually became much warmer. In the valleys colourful butterflies flew around us and we saw many yaks and sheep eating green grass. At this point we had to change our caps, coats, glovesand trousers for T-shirts and shorts. In the early evening we always stop to make camp.We put up our tent and then weeat. After supper Wang Wei put her head down on her pillow and went to sleep but Istayed awake. At midnight the sky became clearer and the stars grew brighter. It wasso quiet. There was almost no wind-only the flames of our fire for company. As I laybeneath the stars I thought about how far we had already travelled. We will reach Dali in Yunnan Province soon, where our cousins Dao Wei and Yu Hangwill join us.We can hardly wait to see them!Unit 4 EarthquakesA NIGHT THE EARTH DIDN'T SLEEPStrange t hings were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. For threedays the water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell.Farmers noticed that thewell walls had deep cracks in them.A smelly gas came out of the cracks. In thefarmyards, the chickens and even the pigs were too nervois to eat.Mice ran out of thefields looking for places to hide.Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about3:00 am on july 28,1976,some people saw bright lights in the sky.The sound of planes could be heard outside the city of Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky.Inthe city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst.but the one million people of the city, whothiught little of these events, were asleep as usual that night. At 3:42 am everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world was at anend!Elevenkilometres directly below the city the greatest earthquake of the 20thcentury had begun. It was felt in Beijing, which is more than two hundredkilometresaway.One-third of the nation felt it.A huge crack that was eight kilometreslong and thirty metres wide cut across houses, roads and canals.Steam burst from holesin the ground.Hard hills of rock became rivers of dir.In fifteen terrible seconds a large city lay in ruins. The suffering of the people was extreme.Two-thirds of them died orwere left without parents. The number of people who were killed or injured reached more than 400,000.But how could the survivors believe it was natural?Everywhere they lookednearly everything was destroyed. All of the city's hospitals,75%of its factories andbuildings and 90% of its homes were gone.Bricks covered the ground like red autumnleaves.Nowind, however, could blow them away. Two dams fell and most of the bridgesalso fell or were not safe for travelling. The railway tracks were now useless pieces ofsteel.Tens of thousands of cows would never give milk again.Half a million oigs andmillions of chickens were dead.Sand now filled the wells instead of water.People wereshocked. Then, laterthat afternoon, anotherbig quake which was almost as strong asthe first one shook Tangshan. Some of the rescue workersand doctors were trappedunder the ruins.More buildings fell down.Water, food, and electricity were hard toget.peoplebegab to wonder how long the disaster would last. All hope was not lost.Soon after the quakes, the a rmy sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to help the rescue workers.Hundreds of thousands of people werehelped. The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead.To the north of the city, most of the 10,000 miners were rescued from the coal mines there.Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed.Freshwater was taken to the city butrain, truck and plane.Slowly, the city began to breathe again.Office of the City GovernmentTangshan,HebeiChinaJuly5,2007Dear____,Congratulations!We are pleased to tell you that you have won the high schoolspeaking competition about new Tangshan. I am a poor black worker in South Africa. The time when I first metNelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life. I was twelve years old. It wasin 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. He offeredguidance to poor black people on their legal problems. He was generous with his time, for which I was grateful.I needed his help because I had very little education. I began school at six. The schoolwhere I studied for only two years was three kilometers away. I had to leave becausemy family could not continue to pay the school fees and the bus fare. I could not reador write well. After trying hard, I got a job in a gold mine. However, this was a timewhen one had got to have a passbook to live in Johannesburg. Sadly I did not have itbecauseI was not born there, and I worried about whether I would become out ofwork. The day when Nelson Mandela helped me was one of my happiest. He told my how toget the correct papers so I could stay in Johannesburg. I became more hopeful aboutmy future. I never forgot how kind Mandela was. When he organized the ANC YouthLeague, I joined it as soon as I could. He said:“The last thirty years have seen the greatest number of laws stopping our rights andprogress, until today we have reached a stage where we have almost no rights at all.It was the truth. Black people could not vote or choose their leaders. They could not get the jobs they wanted. The parts of town in which they had to live were decided bywhite people. The places outside the towns where they were sent to live were the poorest parts of South Africa. No one could grow food there. In fact as Nelson Mandela said:“⋯we were put into a position in which we had either to accept we were lessimportant or fight the government. We chose to attack the laws. We first broke the lawin a way whic h was peaceful; when this was not allowed ⋯only then did we decide toanswer violence with violence. As a matter of fact, I do not like violence ⋯but in 1963 I helped him blow up some government buildings. It was very dangerous because if I was caught I could be put inprison. But I was happy to help because I knew it would help us achieve our dream ofmaking black and white people equal.THE REST OF ELIAS' STORYYou cannot imagine how the name of Robben Island made us afraid. It was a prisonfrom which no one escaped. There I spent the hardest time of my life. But when I gotthere Nelsom Mandela was also there and he helped me. Mr Mandela began a schoolfor those of us who had little learning. He taught us during the lunch breaks and theevenings when we should have been asleep. We read books under our blankets andused anything we could find to make candles to see the words. I became a goodstudent. I wanted to study for my degree but I was not allowed to do that. Later, MrMandela allowed the prison guards to join us. He said they should not be stopped from studying for their degrees. They were not cleverer than me , but they did passtheir exams. So I knwe I could get a degree too. That made me feel good about myself. When I finished the four years in prison, I went to find a job. Since I was bettereducated, I got a job working in an office. However, the police found out and told myboss that I had been in prinson for blowing up government buildings. So I lost my job.I did not work again for twenty years until M r Mandela and the ANC came to power in 1994. All that time my wife and children had to beg for good and help fromrelatives or friends. Luckily Mr Mandela remembered me and gave me a job takingtourists around my old prison on RobbenIslannd. I felt bad the first time I talked to agroup. All the terror and fear of that time came back to me. I remembered the beatingsand the cruelty of the guards and my friends who had died. I felt I would not be ableto do it, but my family encouraged me. They said that the job and the pay from thenew South African government were my reward after working all my life for equalrights for the Blacks. So now at 51 I am proud to show visitors over the prison, for Ihelped to make our people free in their own land.。

First, I had to think very carefully about which course I wanted to take. The school adviser helped me choose the suitable ones: maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese. I know that Chinese is a very difficult language, but I hope to be fluent when I graduate. My adviser recommend that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I’m good at it.

But Blanche Caffiere, a very kind librarian and teacher I've never written about publicly before, also had a huge influence on me.When I first met Mrs. Caffiere, she was the elegant and engaging school librarian at Seattle's View Ridge Elementary School, and I was a shy fourth grader. I was desperately trying to go unnoticed, because I had some big deficits, like terrible handwriting and a messy desk. And I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read something that was cool for girls but not for boys.Mrs. Caffiere took me under her wing and helped make it okay for me to be a messy and nerdy boy who was reading lots of books. She pulled me out of my shell by sharing her love of books. She started by asking questions like “What do you like to read?” and “What are you interested in?”. Then she found me a lot of books—ones that were more complex and challenging than Tom Swift Jr.'s science fiction books I was reading at the time. For example, she gave me great biographies she had read. Once I'd read them, she would make time to discuss them with me. She sincerely listened to what I was saying. Through those conversations about books in the library and in the classroom we became good friends.Looking back on it now, there's no question that my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped spark my interest in libraries [the first large-scale effort of Melinda and me in philanthropy(慈善)] and my focus on helping every child in America get the benefit of great teachers. It's remarkable how much power one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.4.We can learn from the passage that the author was before he met Mrs. Caffiere.A.a student who wanted to drop out of schoolB.not able to read and writeC.hated by other boysD.not self-confident5.What does the underlined word deficits in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A.Accidents.B.Strengths.C.Problems.D.Concerns.6.Mrs. Caffiere helped the author by.A.sharing reading reflections with himB.telling him he was not a messy boyC.hiding him in the libraryD.listening to his complaint7.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.The author's interest in libraries.B.Mrs. Caffiere's influence on the author's life.C.The author's achievements later in his life.D.The importance of a good person in society.C(2021山东师范大学附属中学高一上期中,中)Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends—532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them. But is it possible that Kaylee's online friendships could be making her lonely? That's what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.Could this be true? During your parents' childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words with Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms(平台).In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There's definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual worlds, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today's kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don't need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.8.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To summarize the text.B.To talk about true friends.C.To bring up a discussion.D.To encourage online friendship.9.What does the underlined part “in the flesh” mean in Paragraph 3?A.In any case.B.In person.C.In full measure.D.In advance.10.What is Katie's attitude towards online communication?A.Worried.B.Unconcerned.C.Confused.D.Positive.11.What view does Rosen hold?A.It's wise to turn to friends online.B.It's easier to develop friendships in reality.C.Teenagers need focus on real-world friendships.D.Social media help people stay closely connected.D(中)Teenagers in the US know they'll probably need technical skills to land good jobs, but a new survey suggests that interest in technical careers may be decreasing (减少).The percentage of boys aged 13 to 17 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math(or STEM)careers dropped from 36 percent in 2017 to 24 percent this year, according to a survey by Junior Achievement USA. The percentage of girls interested in STEM careers stayed unchanged at 11 percent. But the 1,000 survey participants still named technology as one of two key skills that would be necessary for preparing them for their future careers.“Kids don't understand where technology can be applied outs ide of computers, coding (编码) and maybe robotics,” said Tammera L. Holmes, president of aviation consulting firm AeroStar Consulting Corporation. “That's all they know, so they can't really link that interest to career pathways (职业道路).”When Holmes was in high school, her mom sent her to an event that featured (以……为特色) the Tuskegee Airmen, famous military (军事的)pilots from World War Ⅱ. One of the pilots took her for air travel. “I was 16 years old, flying over Lake Michigan and facing down the skyline, and I knew immediately that was the career for me,” she said.Women remain outnumbered by men in fields like technology. For people working to increase the number of women in these areas, the lack of growth in girls' interest in STEM careers is concerning.“Teenage girls are more interested than their male classmates in pursuing (追求) careers in which they can help others,” said Ed Grocholski from Junior Achievement. “Even with all theprograms aimed at increasing girls' interest in STEM, I don't think we really talk that much about how we improve people's lives through STEM,” said Grocholski.“Society needs to do better in making those connections for kids,” said Katherine Latham, the founder of an engineering firm. She used civil engineering (土木工程) as an example of a career that would continue to be crucial. However, the fact that students knew they would need technical skills in their future careers was encouraging. The second skill they said they would need is relationship-building.“That's going to be the new breed (类型) of engineers,” said Latham.12.What is the reason behind kids' falling interest in technical careers?A.They find technical careers too boring.B.They find technical skills are less important than before.C.They can't connect their interest with future careers.D.They don't think technical careers are rewarding enough.13.What started Holmes' interest in her current career?A.A documentary about the life of pilots.B.A summer camp for trainee pilots.C.Her parents' wish for her to become a pilot.D.Her flight experience with a pilot.14.According to Grocholski, teenage girls are more interested in careers that .A.can improve people's livesB.will make them look beautifulC.are different from those of their parentsD.can socialize more with other people15.What is the article mainly about?A.The popularity of technical careers among kids and its reasons.B.The change of kids' interest in technical careers and the reasons behind it.C.The different careers boys and girls in the US will pursue.D.Some examples of kids pursuing technical careers successfully.

阅读理解I attended a Catholic (天主教的) grammar school for nine ter I decided to go to the public high school that I now attend. Why did I choose a public high school? The main purpose of going to school is to receive a good education that will help us become successful in the future. Both private and public schools give this opportunity. But public schools and private schools each give an entirely different social experience. The social experience, in my opinion, is much more important than the academic (学业的) experience, especially for a boy like me.In my grammar school, most of the people I met were white, Catholic, and of the same learning ability.Every day at school, students were expected to wear uniform (统一的) clothes, have uniform hairstyles and learn at the same pace.Growing up, this is what I expected all schools were like. For nine years I didn't know that people of different religions (宗教) and learning paces existed in the real world. But the fact is that there are more types of people than Catholics and quick learners. For this reason, I decided to try something new by attending a public high school. My freshman year of high school was an amazing eye-opener for me.I met different types of people.I have met people with long hair, short hair, black hair and purple hair.I have met people who are two years ahead of everyone else, and others who are two years behind. There are musicians, bookworms and others with interests outside the school.People can be whoever they want to be.Meeting so many different students and teachers with so many different interests made me much more interested in meeting more people. This experience made me know how important the social part of a public high school really is.In the future, when I go to college and begin my career, I will be meeting and working with people who have different backgrounds. For this reason, I will never regret the decision I have made.1.Why did the author decide to go to a public high school?A.Because he wanted to become better at his studies.B.Because he didn't want to learn grammar any longer.C.Because he wanted to gain a useful social experience.D.Because his parents couldn't afford to send him to the private school.2.In the Catholic grammar school, the author .A.often changed his hairstyleB.had a terrible academic experienceC.often refused to wear uniform clothesD.seldom met many different types of people3.What do we learn about students in the author's grammar school?A.Their academic experience isn't very different.B.They can usually do whatever they like.C.They know all about the real world.D.None of them studies very hard.Ⅱ.七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
