在探討如何寫memo前,最要先了解為什麼要寫memo?其實寫memo 一個很重要的功能是要讓同學學習跟文本對話。
基於單一文本之閱讀寫memo,只是最初階的練習,練習的重點就是讓同學學習簡約地摘要閱讀文本,以及基於所摘要的文本,進一步對文本加以評論。
進階的練習,就會讓同學整合不同文本,練習寫memo了。
進階版其實可以想成同學論文寫文獻回顧的小練習。

寫文獻評論單篇期刊論文台大社會系林國明(可轉載但請原文轉載)一、目的要作研究,必得學會評論別人的著作。
撰寫文獻評論是學術訓練非常重要的基本工,它對研究的重要性有二。
第一,學習。
研究既是「從作中學」(learning by doing),也是「從讀中學」(learning by reading)。
從閱讀別人的作品中,我們練習如何評價作品的貢獻與限制,我們學到「好的研究」可以長成怎樣,「壞的研究」應該如何避免。
第二,定位自己的研究。
我們是在知識社群中作研究。
我們的提問,我們用來理解或解釋這個世界的概念,我們回答研究問題的論點,都不是憑空出現,不是個人天縱英明,而是累積了前人知識的產物。
評論文獻,讓我們可以體察自己的研究受惠於哪些知識傳承,瞭解前人在相關的研究所做的貢獻與不足。
這樣,我們才能有個方向,驅策自己的研究—那怕只是一篇小小的期末報告--- 能對知識的累積,有一點點貢獻。
二、內容老師常要求大學部學生寫「讀書心得」,要求研究所學生寫critical memos。
這都是「文獻評論」的形式。
學生們練習寫「文獻評論」的機會其實不少。
但大多數人都不知道「文獻評論」該怎麼寫。
「文獻評論」是可以有格式的。
格式讓初學者可以依樣畫葫蘆來練習。
哪天你練到功力深厚,自是不必受到格式的羈絆。
但學會飛天之前,要先把馬步蹲穩。
讓我們從單篇期刊論文的評論開始。
初學者拿單篇期刊論文來練功,再適合不過了。
單篇期刊論文的評論,在內容上,要告訴讀者三件事:簡單說,就是作。
格式說來簡單,寫來並不容易。
初學者常感困惑的是:怎麼作摘要?從哪些方面來評價論文的貢獻和限制?這就牽涉到我們閱讀一篇論文的重點。
三、如何閱讀一篇論文?Lofland & Lofland 說過:“Social science research is to pose propositional answer to a question asked about a topic.” 所以,簡單說,閱讀ㄧ篇經驗研究論文,我們要掌握的重點在於:這分成五大重點:2.3.4.5.四、如何評價一篇論文?前面談到的閱讀論文所要掌握的幾個重點,構成我們評價的面向,包括:1 234根據理論傳統和研究典範的差異,我們在這幾個面向的評價基準可能很不一樣。
我以下提出的基準,可能只是反映社會科學研究的「主流見解」。
這些基準背後有一些對「什麼是好的社會研究」的預設。
這些評價基準,我大都在「社會研究方法」的課堂上講過,陷於篇幅,我無法在此詳述。
要提醒的是,這些基準並非是絕對的。
你可以提出你自認更適當的評價基準。
不過,學術研究貴在對話與溝通,你寫文獻評論,就是在作對話。
如果你有獨特的評價標準,你要說服人們為何這些基準是重要的。
那麼,在這四個面向上,有哪些評價基準呢?1.研究問題:(1)好的研究問題一定是清晰、聚焦,指涉到經驗上確實存在的現象,而且可以使用經驗資料來回答的。
有些論文,從頭讀到尾,還是不知道作者要問什麼問題?有的研究問的是根本不存在的「假問題」。
有的論文,作者問了一堆問題,彼此之間並沒有邏輯的或階序的關係,沒有串成一個核心的問題。
有的作者野心很大,問了無法在期刊論文的範圍回答的問題。
這些都是常見的研究問題的通病。
清晰、聚焦、經驗上有效且能適當回答,只是好的研究問題的基本門檻。
通不過這個門檻,一定是不好的研究問題。
通過了,不見得就是好問題。
我們還要看,這問題有沒有現實和理論的重要性。
(2)現實的重要性:這篇論文所提問的問題,對人類命運,或特定社會/人群的處境,有什麼重要性?這是超越知識內在邏輯,具有整體社會文化意涵的倫理判斷。
這判斷反映評論者對社會中具有共鳴性的價值的體察,以及對知識的倫理要務(ethical imperative)的認知。
這種道德性的判斷在學術界內部會有爭議而構成張力。
學術的框架有時會限制研究者提出的問題,如C. Wright Mills 所批評的「方法論的禁慾主義者」,受限於方法,終其一生,都在研究「瑣碎而不重要」的問題。
好的研究,應該敢於探問對人類處境有重要意義的問題。
但什麼樣的研究問題,才算有現實的重要性,學界難有共識,但研究者必須說服讀者。
想一想,作者有嘗試說服你嗎?用什麼方式來鋪陳?你被作者說服了嗎?(3)學術的重要性:怎樣的研究問題才具有社會重要性,這會有所爭議,但對於什麼研究問題具有學術重要性,爭議則較少。
通常有幾個類型的研究問題,被認為是具有學術的重要性的。
I.作者所提出的,是個普遍認為很重要,但還沒人做過系統地研究的問題。
比如說,支持國民黨和民進黨的選民,是不是具有族群/省籍的差異?現在你會說,這還要問嗎?這不是各種民調和選舉研究做到爛的題目嗎?但二十幾年前,這還是個沒還被系統性地研究的問題。
有人以選舉資料來回答這個問題,這種搶先研究,就作了學術貢獻。
II.質疑廣為接受,但還沒被適當檢証的假設。
比如說,社會上流行一種看法,外籍配偶的子女學業表現較差,你對此感到懷疑。
你想要檢證流行的說法,你的研究,可能導致我們對經驗世界有新的認識。
III.解決文獻中所存在的爭議。
如果作者的問題意識是起源於文獻中爭議,而能提出更妥切的論點,或更充分的證據,來反駁、修飾或整合文獻中既有的說法,那就有了貢獻。
IV.闡明或評價文獻中未受質疑的假定。
某些理論吵翻天,背後的假定(postulates)卻完全一致。
例如,解釋人類經濟行為的理論很多,但都假定經濟行為者是自利、理性的。
真是如此嗎?有的研究,就是要直搗黃龍,質疑理論背後的背後的假定。
這類研究問題如果成功反駁了文獻中未受質疑的假定,可能導致理論典範的變遷。
2.理論評價一篇論文在理論上的貢獻與限制,包括幾個部分:內在結構,外部關係、現實效用,以及,和資料的關連。
(1)理論的內在結構:理論是一套相互關連的命題,陳述概念和概念之間的關係,來解釋現象。
這些命題或由假定、既有的理論或廣為接受的說法推理而來,或從資料中觀察到模式化的關係。
命題的陳述是否合乎邏輯推理、前後一致、明確、簡潔,且在經驗上可被檢證的?這是我們評價理論的「內在結構」一些基準。
(2)理論的外部關係:指的是作者的論點和其他理論的關係。
作者的論點是否有原創性,還是拾人牙慧?有沒有反駁、修正、整合或擴充既有的理論?(3)理論的效用:作者的理論解釋,有沒有幫助我們介入現實世界以帶來改變的效用?預測的功能嗎?可以應用到其他領域(而不只是其他個案),增加我們對現實世界的瞭解?(4)理論與資料的關係:理論和資料是藉由概念化或(和)操作化來連結的。
這是以下要說明的。
3.概念化與操作化理論,陳述抽象的概念之間的關係。
概念指涉具體的經驗現象。
在邏輯-演繹的研究程序中,我們從定理和既有理論出發,推論出概念與概念之間的關係,然後將抽象的概念「操作化」,以經驗上可以測量的變項或指標來代表概念,藉由觀察變項與變項之間的關係是否合乎預期來檢證理論。
這是一種「由上往下」的研究程序,由抽象到具體,以具體的經驗資料來檢證抽象的理論命題。
在同時使用到分析性歸納(analytic induction)的質化研究,採用「由下往上」,從具體的資料長出抽象的概念。
我們將相似的事例歸於同一範疇,加以命名、界定,並闡釋意義,是為「概念化」;我們觀察出範疇和範疇的關係,而形成抽象的理論命題。
不管是「由上往下」的操作化,還是「由下往上」的概念化,我們都要評價作者對概念的界定是否清楚?概念與經驗對象之間是否有適當的對應關係,也就是說,是否具有效度(validiality)?4.經驗資料作者是否有充分的經驗證據來支持它的論點,這是有關「資料」面向最主要的關切。
常被使用的評價基準是代表性和系統性。
使用機率抽樣的研究,比較有明確的評價標準;非機率抽樣和個案研究,經常面對「代表性」的質疑。
不管是機率或非機率抽樣,我們都關切:作者選擇哪些個案來觀察?「樣本」是否有所偏誤?另一個我們對資料的關切重點是:作者的研究設計(包括分析的層次,資料的來源與性質),所蒐集到的資料,能否針對研究問題提供適當的資訊?想像一下如果你像陳美華教授的研究一樣,想探問性工作者在性交易過程中的性實踐,究竟是「性」還是「工作」?你需要什麼資料來源才能適當回答這個問題?除了對性工作者作深度訪談之外,有其他替代性的資料來源嗎?不同資來源提供的訊息會友和差別。
最後一個需要關切的是,作者從經驗資料中提出哪些研究發現?有的研究,雖無理論的創意,可是對經驗資料作了挖掘、整理,和具體層次的分析,破除一些謬論,增進我們對世界的瞭解,仍是相當有貢獻。
其實,對初學者來說,埋頭整理資料,可能比豪情構思理論,還更可能做出知識的貢獻。
應用這些基準來評估期刊論文,每篇多少都有些缺陷,沒有完美的研究這回事。
從文獻評論中我們要學會體察作者作了哪些貢獻,又有何限制。
有些貢獻非常突出,有些缺陷太過重大。
這些差別構成論文的好壞。
我們雖然根據研究問題、理論、概念化與操作化,以及經驗資料這四個面向的諸多要點來評價一篇論文,但在寫文獻評論時,我們不必逐條評論。
讀的時候要仔細,寫得時候抓大體。
要放大突出的貢獻和重大的缺陷,作重點討論。
五、寫作格式現在我們有充分的準備,來說明單篇期刊論文的文獻評論的撰寫格式了。
下筆之前,先根據前面的閱讀和評價面向,找出重點:作者的主要貢獻和缺陷是什麼?是在研究問題、論證與理論觀點、概念化與操作化,和經驗資料的那個面向?第一段先作摘要。
既然是摘要,文字就要簡潔。
摘要的長短,根據預定的篇幅而有所不同。
但不管你的文獻評論有多長,最好都不要超過五百字。
如果你被要求寫一千字的文獻評論,那摘要以三百字左右為宜,不要超過預定篇幅的三分之一。
摘要的內容,一般包括我在「如何閱讀一篇論文」的重點:作者的研究問題是什麼?作者的主要發現是什麼?他/她發展什麼論點來回答研究問題?作者使用哪些理論典範或取徑(approach)、分析架構和核心概念?和哪些文獻對話?如何作「概念化」和「操作化」?使用怎樣的經驗資料?因為你只有三到五百字的篇幅,你必須抓重點。
