DThe oddness of life in space never quite goes away. Here are some examples.First consider something as simple as sleep. Its position presents its own challenges. The main question is whether you want your arms inside or outside the sleeping bag. If you leave your arms out, they float free in zero gravity, often giving a sleeping astronaut the look of a funny balled (芭蕾)dancer. “I’m an inside guy,” Mike Hopkins says, who returned from a six-month tour on the International Space St ation. “I like to be wrapped up.”On the station, the ordinary becomes strange. The exercise bike for the American astronauts has no handlebars. It also has no seat. With no gravity, it’s just as easy to pedal violently. You can watch a movie while you pedal by floating a microcomputer anywhere you want. But station residents have to be careful about staying in one place too long. Without gravity to help circulate air, the carbon dioxide you exhale (呼气) has a tendency to form an invisible (隐形的)cloud around you head. You can end up with what astronauts call a carbon-dioxide headache.Leroy Chiao, 54, an American retired astronaut after four flights, describes what happens even before you float out of your seat,”Your inner ear thinks your’re falling . Meanwhil e your eyes are telling you you’re standing straight. That can be annoying—that’s why some people feel sick.” Within a couple days —truly terrible days for some —astronauts’ brains learn to ignore the panicky signals from the inner ear, and space sickness disappears.Space travel can be so delightful but at the same time invisibly dangerous. For instance, astronauts lose bone mass. That’s why exercise is considered so vital that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) puts it right on the workday schedule. The focus on fitness is as much about science and the future as it is about keeping any individual astronauts return home, and, more importantly, how to maintain strength and fitness for the two and a half years or more that it would take to make a round-trip to Mars.63.What is the major challenge to astronauts when they sleep in space?A. Deciding on a proper sleep positionB. Choosing a comfortable sleeping bagC. Seeking a way to fall asleep quicklyD. Finding a right time to go to sleep.64.The astronauts will suffer from a carbon-dioxide headache when _____.A. the y circle around on their bikesB. they use microcomputers without a stopC. they exercise in one place for a long timeD. they watch a movie while pedaling65.Some astronauts feel sick on the station during the first few days because _____.A. their senses stop workingB. they have to stand up straightC. they float out of their seats unexpectedlyD. whether they are able to go back to the station66.One of the NASA’s major concerns about astronauts is _____.A. how much exercise they do on the stationB. how they can remain healthy for long in spaceC. whether they can recover after returning homeD. whether they are able to go back to the station【解析】试题分析:这是一篇说明文。

Do it step by step,中考就会志在必得。

Passage 1A Good Night’s SleepWhen the morning sun looks in through your bedroom window, do you jump out of bed?1An adequate amount of sleep can make the difference between a great day and a terrible one!A good night’s sleep doesn’t just happen. You need to prepare for it.2First, go to bed at the same time every day, and get up at the same time.If you haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep, don’t oversleep the next morning.Get up at your regular time.Sleeping late for just a cou ple of days can change your body clock to a different cycle. You don’t want that if you have a set daily schedule. Also, avoid big meals at night.3Your stomach works hard to digest those fatty foods, and that may keep you up.Your body produces a chemical called melatonin (褪黑激素) that helps you sleep.Light affects the amount of melatonin your body makes.4So at night turn off your TV and computer. Also, don’t read from a backlit electronic equipment like an iPad.Some scientists think that the light from those screens stops your body from making melatonin. So turn those screens off at least an hour before bedtime.Maybe you can’t sleep or you wake up in the middle of the night.5Get up and do something relaxing elsewhere. Then go back to bed when you feel sleepy again. If you worry a lot, make a list of things you need to do the next day.Do that an hour before bed. That way you get your worries out of the way before you go to bed. After a good night’s sleep, you’ll be able to face a new day.A.Don’t just lie in bed.B.You can have three meals a day.C.Or do you roll over and complain?D.Various experts have given tips to help.E.Your TV and computer might affect your sleep.F.It produces more in the evening and less in the daytime.G.Eating heavy, rich food within two hours of bedtime can keep you awake.Passage 2Attraction of the MinionsWhen it comes to films, people usually favor good over evil, focus on the hero and ignore the supporting characters.1Originally comedic background characters in the film Despicable Me(《卑鄙的我》),these yellow pill-shaped nuts have totally stolen the show and turned into a popular figure. This summer the characters debuted(首次亮相)in their own self-titled movie in theaters abroad, having the second biggest opening weekend of all t ime for a cartoon film according to USA Today.Recently McDonald’s has been including Minion toys with kids’ meals in some areas, causing loyal fans to flock to the restaurant to collect them all.2The movie’s huge popularity even surprised its writers.“We never knew the Minions were going to be so popular. It just became a force of nature,” the film’s co-writer Cinco Paul told the Los Angeles Times.3For many, the appeal is obviously their cuteness.Their simple nature can easily surpass cultures and age groups.Even children can draw them.Thousands of examples of fan-made Minion art from fingernails to Halloween clothes are visible on global social media platforms. But there’s more to the phenomenon than just entertainment website HitFix expl ains that their way of communicating makes the creatures influential as well.4But it seems everyone can understand them through their exaggerated(夸张的)movements and expressions.More importantly, their childlike manner is a brand of humor that wins hearts.“Clumsy foolish Minions are recognized as the ultimate β personalities,” wrote Peter Debruge of US entertainment magazine Variety. They desire nothing more than to serve their most despicable master.5“Perhaps we love Minions because they remind us of ourselves,” The Huffington Post associate Web editor Sara Boboltz wrote, “or an evil version of ourselves.”A.So what makes the banana-loving Minions a big hit?B.Besides, their childlike manner entertains fans more.C.And this evil characteristic arouses sympathy among humans.D.Related video games, toys and other goods are sweeping the world.E.Minions is a 2015 American 3D computer-animated family comedy film.F.But when it comes to the Minions, these conventions go right out the window.G.They largely speak in nonsense words with the occasional recognizable terms like “potato”.Passage 3Anxiety is your mental watchman. Its fixed pattern is to search for what may be about to go wrong. It continually, and without your conscious permission, scans your life, even when you are asleep,in dreams and nightmares. 1When it finds one,it worries it.Along with depression and anger, anxiety is one of the bad faces of worries.2Controlled by anxiety, you will feel a lack of security and confidence. When anxiety is severe and pained,it can be a sign of a disorder, such as panic or terror.Although anxiety seems to have a biological basis,it is habit-forming for many of us.Some of our anxious feelings are in fact wasted energy.Anxiety has gotten out of hand when it is pointless and repeated. When you are faced with a problem at work, before taking a test,or making an important decision, you will feel anxious. When you are controlled by anxiety, you are unable to control your emotions(情感)to the point of it changing your daily routine and habits.3Or you find you are usually anxious at work or around your family. At times, you should listen to the message of your negative emotions, and change your outward life rather than your emotional life.4If you are worried about the dangers of your brother’s new hobby, sky diving, perhaps you ought to tell him so.Taking action may relieve your anxiety.5By learning to stop always seeking guarantee, not only can you start to undo the automatic cycle of anxiety, but also you learn that you can manage just fine without the need for constant guarantee. This in turn creates a sense of self-confidence and self-respect,which is vital to overcome anxiety.A.For these people, saying NO to others is often of much anxiety.B.It reviews your work, your love, your play, until it finds an imperfection.paring anxiety with depression helps to discuss possible cures for anxiety.D.These three common emotions are considered the cause of most mental illnesses.E.If that doesn’t work, then it’s time to deal with any automatic thoughts in yourself.F.If you are anxious about the work, you might get to the office an hour earlier every day.G.You find yourself waking up anxious, going through the day anxious and going to bed anxious.Passage 4Parents and the YoungIt is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents.1They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.It is time that parents should find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they always forget how they themselves felt when young.2It is one of their ways to show they have grown up and that they can face any difficult situation.Adults worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead.Young people make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble. It just shows that they feel cut off from the adult’s world, and that they have not yet beenaccepted into their world.3And if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people very happy.Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do.4It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.5If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will give you the right to do what you want to do.A.Parents should understand young people.B.Young people like to live with their parents.C.Young people like to act without much thinking.D.They say that their parents don’t understand them.E.All you want is to be left alone and do what you like.F.If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents.G.That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own.Passage 5According to statistics published by the University of Scranton, about 45 percent of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions—and the most popular resolution is losing weight.Of those who make resolutions, a mere 8 percent achieve them.1Are we just setting ourselves up for failure?Learn how to make realistic resolutions and how to overcome the roadblocks along the way.Setting a resolution to lose 15 pounds isn’t a goal that’s achievable now.It may be a good long-term goal.2 Registered dieti tian Elisa Zied says, “ ...to be real when you make a resolution. It’s okay to shoot for the stars like making a resolution to run a marathon, but why not set a smaller goal and train smartly?”The same concept applies to weight loss.3These goals should help develop healthy habits that will finally help achieve your long-term resolution.Notice that these goals are simple and achievable.“Instead of going from zero to 60, from never going to the gym to going four to five times a week, why not start with three days a week, get consistent and build from there?” Zied says.“Set yourself up for success and map out your course by making appointments with yourself to be active.4”You also need to be aware of your current exercise and eating habits to make achievable goals.Keeping a diary of your food and exercise habits can help.Record everything you eat and drink for three to five days and review it.5 For example, if you notice a tendency to snacks on unhealthy fare, set a goal to eat fruit or vegetables with each snack.Building on these smaller goals over time can help you achieve your long-term goal.A.So why do so many of us fail to achieve our goals?B.Once you notice your not-so-good habits, start fixing them.C.Set one to three weekly goals that you want to achieve.D.Resolutions usually involve a commitment to sticking to your goals.E.However, in order to reach it, you need to take baby steps to get it done.F.If you treat your goals like setting appointments, you’re more likely to achieve them.G.Losing weight, as well as getting a better job, is among the most popular resolutions for adults.Passage 6Lost in the PostHow would you feel if the letter you penned carefully and posted to your favorite star ended up in the recycling bin? That’s where unopened fan mail sent to singer Taylor Swift was found in Nashville.1Swift’s management said it was an accident, but dealing with piles of letters is a burden for most public figures.According to the BBC reporter Jon Kelly, at the height of his fame, Johnny Depp was said to receive up to 10,000 letters a week.2The dawn of the digital age in which public figures with a Twitter account can be messaged directly has made the process easier. The White House says it deals with 20,000 messages addressed to President Barack Obama each day. Some celebrities don’t want letters. In 2008, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr said that he would throw them out because he was too busy.3 Robert Pattinson, star of the Twilight films, claims that he reads tonnes and tonnes of letters from fans, which takes up almost all his free time. Many artists, however, outsource(外包)the task of opening, reading and replying.Sylvia “Spanky” Taylor, 58, has run a service in California that does just that since 1987.4 Most letters are simply declarations of affection and admiration, she says.A few ask for money.A small number contain threats which require her to contact the celebrity’s security team and law enforcement. The biggest problem for Taylor is working out how to deal with the correspondence(通信).Presents such as soft toys are sent to local hospitals, and most of the letters just get shredded and recycled.5 For some, this is enough, according to Lynn Zubernis, an expert at West Chester University. She says that the relationship between fan and celebrity may exist only in the mind of the former but it comes from a deeply-rooted human need for community.A.Others do attempt to get through it themselves.B.In fact, there is no alternative to deal with the problem.C.How could he have enough time to skim through these letters one by one?D.Typically, correspondence is acknowledged by a photo with a printed “signature”.E.Accordingly, the correspondence problem has been difficult for the computer to automate.F.She and her staff deal with up to 20,000 items of mail a month on behalf of 26 celebrities.G.This incident has caused a wide public concern about how the public figures deal with the letters or mails from the fans.Passage 7TrampoliningWhat’s more fun than standing still?Jumpin g up and down on a springy piece of fabric(织物)!This activity is known as trampolining and it’s sweeping the nation. The idea of trampolining is ancient.Eskimos have been throwing each other in the air for thousands ofyears.Firmen began using a life net to catch people jumping from buildings in 1887.1 A gymnast named George Nissan and his coach Larry Griswold made the first modern trampoline in 1936.They got the idea by watching swing artists bouncing off a tight net at the circus. They named their equipment after the Spanish word trampolín,which means diving board.2 In 1942 they began making trampolines to sell to the public.3 Experts find that more than 100,000 people hurt themselves while using one each year.Clubs and gyms use large safety nets or other equipment to make it safer. Most trampoline injuries happen at home.Since trampolines are more affordable than ever, injuries are even more common. These injuries happen for many reasons.People may bounce too high and land off the trampoline or onto the springs.4 Perhaps the worst injuries happen when untrained people try to do flips(空翻).Landing on your neck or head can cause injuries or even kill you.But don’t let all that bad news keep you down. There are many things that you can do to practice safe trampolining.Trampolines have been around for a while now. They have brought a lot of joy to many people. They can be a good source of exercise and activity.5 But they can also be deadly. It is important to follow some professional guidance.Be sure that you are practicing safely while having a good time.Happy bouncing!A.They can help people improve their balance and moves.B.Trampolines may be fun,but they can also be dangerous.C.The men wanted to share their idea with the whole world.D.Injuries also happen when many people are jumping at the same time.E.You can surround your trampoline with a net so that people don’t fall off of it.F.They found a winner when they performed a piece of spring across a steel frame.G.And in the early 1900s,circus performers began bouncing off of netting to amuse audiences.Passage 8What I Think of Boxing as a SportBoxing is a popular sport.Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches. It could be the toughest of all sports to survive. It takes boxers hours in the gym and years to develop the specific characteristics needed to be a great boxer.1It seems to me that some people, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer. This gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves.2They do that because the boxer comes from their own country, and if “their” boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. It is a fact that many people have feelings of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives.Watching a boxing match gives them a way of expressing it.3 Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur boxers even have to wear helmets,a kind of strong hard hat, there have frequently been accidents in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic consequences.Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and, occasionally, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring.4 They are usually in the form of serious brain damage, even if a boxer has never been knocked out.To conclude,I am personally not at all in favor of aggressive sports like boxing.5 We can celebrate more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes in our society.I believe that the world is aggressive enough already! Of course, people like competitive sports, and so do I,but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport.A.However,boxing can be a very dangerous sport.B.Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer.C.In boxing, fighters are required to hit a moving target.D.Many fans are drawn to the sport because they love the competition.E.Perhaps that is the reason why successful boxers are treated as big heroes.F.I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV.G.Besides,studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing.Passage 9It had be en a hard week for Jack. His parents had to cancel the family’s spring vacation to Disney World.1And he studied the wrong chapter for his science test.Jack pressed the play button on his CD player. As his favorite song played,Jack thought about the coming weekend. After a few minutes,he called to his sister in the next room.“Hey,how about playing basketball?”2 The right song can make you smile and feel like getting up and dancing. It can also calm you down when you’re worried.Besides changing how you fee l,music may help make your brain work better.3It may be because people’s bodies have natural rhythms, such as a heartbeat and pulse.Different kinds of music can affect you in different ways.Changing your mood can be as easy as pressing the“play” button.Soft music with long, gentle notes is what many people play to relax. If you want to relax, try listening to nature sounds.4 Maybe just hearing a single voice soothes you.At an exhibit in New York City, visitors can lie down on the city’s largest futon be d.They close their eyes, put on headphones, and listen to soft music, relaxing themselves.Music can do more than just help them relax.Playing music while studying helps keep your brain in shape. When you listen to a sound,it travels from the ear to the brain by electrical signal and it involves learning, memory, and emotions.Experts suggest playing slow music to help you concentrate while you study. It may even improve your memory.5For example,if you’re reading a beautiful poem, playing light music may help yo u understand it better. No matter what style of music you like, you can use it to help you.The right music can add to a good mood or turn around a bad day.Just ask Jack. After listening to his favorite song,he put his tough week behind him and played a great game of basketball with his sister.A.Why does music have these powers?B.It may help make people healthy again.C.His basketball team lost an important game.D.Why can music help you stay longer in a place?E.Or look for music with a single instrument you like.F.So try to match the type of music to the type of learning.G.Music can be just what you need when you’re feeling down.Passage 10Do Actions Speak Louder than Words? Our society is fast paced. We are all rushing from one place to the next, blowing our horn at slow drivers who may be singing songs in the car with their children or pointing out some interesting sights. We don’t have time for that silliness today. But we try to say to ourselves that we will make time for fun tomorrow. It is time to take a few deep breaths and think about our actions and our words.1Have you ever really thought about the saying “Actions speak louder than words”?Think about it now.If you say one thing and act in an opposite way, will the words be ignored and just the a ctions be remembered?I don’t think so.2 It is also equally important to use words to show appreciation, love, approval and happiness and then follow those words with a hug, pat on the back or smile.3 What about that saying?True?Yes!Words carry a lot of weight and will be remembered for years especially when they are written down.Mean words can hurt for that moment and for a lifetime.I am sure that each of us remembers a time when a friend made an unkind comment.4Let’s not be a member of that “club”.When was the last time that you hid a love note in a lunch box or in your mate’s coat pocket? If you want to see a bright smile, that will do it!This written note will be remembered for many days, even years.“I can live for two months on a good complimen t(夸奖),” said Mark Twain.Children grow stronger when they feel appreciated and understood.5 A perfect way to turn a bad day around is to praise your child.“I noticed that your hair looked very nice today.” “Did you hang your coat up all by yourself?” It i s amazing how fast those few words can change a child’s outlook...Almost immediately.Don’t stop there...One of my sisters ended a phone conversation with three words—“I love you!”Boy, that put a spring in my step!Mark Twain is right.I still feel the positi ve effect of those three little but very powerful words.A.The pen is more powerful than the sword.B.Is it really reasonable to do something like that?C.Do they display the attitude that we want to convey?D.It is important to have your words match your actions.E.Behavior is a mirror in which everyone shows his image.F.Those words did lasting damage to you, the relationship or both.G.Don’t be afraid to shower your child with encouraging words all day long.Passage 11Third-Culture KidsDid you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different one?If so, then you are a third-culture kid!The term “third-culture kid”(or TCK)was coined in the 1960s by Dr.Ruth.She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India.Caught between two cultures, they form their very own identity.1About 90 percent of them have a university degree, while 40 percent pursue a postgraduate or doctor degree. They usually benefit from their intercultural experiences, which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals.2In fact many hardships may arise from this phenomenon.A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected.Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures.Max, for example, experienced this fundamental feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid.3 While this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world, it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships. For a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new foreign countr y than to return to their “home” country. After living in Australia and South Korea for many years, Louise finally returned to Turkey when she was a teenager. But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born.4She did not share the same values as her friends even years after going back home. While a third-culture kid must let go of his/her identity as a foreigner when he/she returns, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealized image children have of “home”.5As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places.A.Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy.B.In general, they often reach excellent academic results.C.This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.D.However, their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle.E.Their experience abroad helps them to gain a better understanding of cultural differences.F.Unlike other teens of her age, she didn’t know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends.G.Additionally, making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid.Passage 12They Just Can’t Help ItMy theory is that the female brain is mainly built for empathy—the ability to understand other people, and that the male brain is mainly built for building systems.1 For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines that feature computers and sport. You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when they are growing up.However, this is not the case.A new study carried out at Cambridge University shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and that newborn boys look longer at a mobile.2It has also been observed that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people’s feelings.Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playingwith toys which have clear functions.3 People whose jobs are in the construction industries are almost male.Math and engineering, which require high levels of systems-thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference?Actually women have four times as many brain neurons(神经元)that connect the right and left part of their brains.Because of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men.4Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another. Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender(性别)is better than the other, but this is not the case.My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses.5It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist and why they are there.A.Generally speaking, there are clear differences.B.Their preference for building systems may change over time.C.You can see the same kind of pattern in the adult workplace.D.They will consider many sources of information at the same time.E.It is important to stress that the female brain may be built more for empathy.F.That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological.G.Others may think the theory creates a belief of what a particular type of person is like.Passage 13Rhythm of LifeChoosing the right time to sleep, the correct moment to make decisions, the best hour to eat—and even go to hospital—could be your key to perfect health.Centuries after man discovered the rhythms of the planets and the cycles of crops, scientists have learned that we also live by precise rhythms that govern everything from our basic bodily functions to mental skills.Man is a prisoner of time. But it’s not just the experts who are switching on to the way our bodies work.1Prince Charles consults a chart which tells him when he will be at his peak on a physical, emotional and intellectual level.Boxer Frank Bruno is another who charts his biorhythms to plan for big fights.2Sleep, blood pressure, hormone levels and heartbeat all follow their own clocks, which may bear only slight relation to our man-made 24-hour cycle.Research shows that in laboratory experiments when social signals and, most importantly, light indicators such as dawn are taken away, people lose touch with the 24-hour clock and sleeping patterns change.Temperature and heartbeat cycles lengthen and settle into “days” lasting about 25 hours. In the real world, light and dark keep adjusting internal clock to the 24-hour day. But the best indicator of performance is body temperature. As it falls from a 10 p.m.high of 37.2℃ to a pre-dawn low of 36.1℃, mental functions fall too.3The most famous example is the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island in the US.The three operators in the control room worked alternating(交替的)weeks of day, evening and night shifts.4Investigators believe this caused the workers to overlook a warning light and fail to close an open valve.Finding the secret of what makes us tick has long fascinated scientists and work done over the last decade has yielded important clues.5For example, the time we eat may be important if we want to maximize intellectual or sporting performance. There is already evidence suggesting that the time when medicine is given to patients affects how well it works.A.The rhythm of life is a slight beat.B.The aim is to help us become more efficient(高效的).C.Jenny Hope claims to have tested their body clocks to the limit.D.This is a key reason why shift work can cause so many problems.E.Experts say every aspect of human bodies is influenced by daily rhythms.F.Many people study the state of their biorhythms before making their daily plans.G.Such a dangerous combination never gave their bodies’ natural rhythms a chance to settle down.Passage 14Being Left-handed in a Right-handed WorldThe world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left? 1The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery.Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的)component to it.2In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random.Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures.3In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand.In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at God’s right side.God’s left hand, however, is the hand of judgement.Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland,。

专题能力提升练十六主旨大意题——主旨大意类A[2020·太原市高三年级模拟三]Growing up in an Italian-American household was, for me, pretty special. My mother, Gina, an immigrant from Italy, held on to so many of her family's traditions that at times, regardless of the fact that I was living in America, our home felt like in Italy. To this day, my mother only speaks to me in Italian. She may speak in some English terms and expressions from time to time, but our conversations are, for the most part, in her mother tongue. And most of those conversations are about food. For us, food—Italian food is an important part of our lives. The food my mother prepared for me and my sister as children is the same food as my grandmother created in her small farm kitchen high up in the mountains. One of my family's dishes of heritage I am sure to learn and perfect is my mother's arancini di riso (Italian rice balls). Arancini, in Italian, means little oranges. After you roll some leftover rice into a small ball, place a piece of mozzarella (莫泽雷勒干酪) in the center, then bread that and fry it, the golden outside resembles one of our favorite fruits. For my family, it also showcased my mother's ability to always find a delicious way to never let anything go to waste: Last night's good rice was repurposed into this perfect mid-day snack or dinner appetizer. So, when I take a perfect little arancini out of the hot oil and crack it open, I am immediately transported back to my childhood: I am a little girl getting off the bus and running through the back door to the smell of last night's rice transformed into sticky, delicate goodness. This small snack symbolizes so many important elements in my life: my mother's waste-not philosophy, her ability to take a few simple ingredients and transform them, and finally, the way she carried her mother's recipes to the U. S. in her mind and heart so she could, years later, teach me about my heritage through food.Eating arancini, and all the other recipes my mother continued to make here in the U. S. after leaving Italy, allowed her to teach me who I am, where I come from, and why I should be proud of it all.1.What makes the author's home feel like in Italy?A.Fruit and snacks. B.Neighbors and friends.C.Names and holidays. D.Food and language.2.Why is the author sure to learn and perfect arancini di riso?A.It saves valuable food from going to waste.B.It reminds the author of her days at school.C.It plays a major role in continuing family tradition.D.It showcases the cooking skills of the author's mother.3.What does the underlined word “goodness”in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.Arancini di riso. B.Mother's kindness.C.The Italian language. D.Amazing cooking skills4.What is the text mainly about?A.Why learning to cook is important for a mother.B.How the family heritage is taught through food.C.How childhood experiences change one's life.D.Why mothers are important in children's education.B[2020·沈阳市教学质量监测三]Researchers from the MIT Media Lab, Boston Children's Hospital, and Northeastern University used a robotic teddy bear, “Huggable”,across the Boston Children's Hospital. More than 50 hospitalized children were divided into three groups that involved Huggable, a tablet-based virtual Huggable, or a traditional toy teddy bear. In general, the robotic Huggable improved various patient outcomes over the other two choices. When first designed, Huggable was operated remotely by a specialist outside a child's room for a moment. Through software, a specialist could control the robot's facial expressions and body actions. The specialists could also talk through a speaker—with their voice automatically changed to sound more childlike—and observe the participants via camera.During the treatments involving Huggable for kids aged 3 to 10, a specialist would sing nursery rhymes to younger children through the robotic bear and move the arms during the song. Older kids would play the I Spy game, where they had to guess an object in the room described by the specialist through Huggable. Through self-reports and questionnaires, the researchers recorded how much the patients and families liked Huggable. A greater percentage of children and their parents reported that the children enjoyed playing with Huggable more than with the virtual figure or traditional teddy bear. The study proved the possibility of including Huggable in the treatments for children. Results also showed that children playing with Huggable experienced more positive emotions overall. They also got out of bed and moved around more, and were emotionally connected with the robot, asking it personal questions and inviting it to come back later to meet their families. “Such improved emotional and physical outcomes are all positive factors that could contribute to hospitalized children's better and faster recovery,” the researchers wrote in their study. The study also provided a basis for developing a fully autonomous Huggable robot, which is the researchers' final goal. In the future, that automated robot could be used to improve children's further treatment and care, and monitor their well-being.5.What can we learn about Huggable?A.It was first designed for disabled kids.B.It can make facial expressions.C.It talks like a caring parent.D.It works automatically.6.How did the children find Huggable?A.Favorable. B.Conventional.C.Disappointing. D.Unhelpful.7.How did Huggable help the hospitalized children with their treatment?A.It improved their mental experience.B.It protected them from possible viruses.C.It gave tips on taking good care of young patients.D.It provided up-to-date information about their diseases.8.What is the text mainly about?A.The fast development of robots in the medical area.B.A new technology in medicine to treat children.C.Robots' advantages over other methods of treatment.D.A robotic teddy bear used in caring for hospitalized children.C[2020·青岛市高三练习诊断]In recent years, stressed-out people living in cities have been seeking protection in green spaces for the proven positive impacts on physical and mental health, but the benefits of “blue spaces”—not only the sea and coastline, but also rivers, lakes, canals, waterfalls, even fountains—are less well advertised, yet the science has been consistent for at least a decade:being by water is good for the body and mind.“Many of the processes are exactly the same as with green spaces—with some added benefits,”says Dr. Mathew White, a senior lecturer at the University of Exeter.White says there are three established pathways by which the presence of water is positively related to health and happiness. First, there are the beneficial environmental factors, such as less polluted air and more sunlight. Second, people who live by water tend to be more physically active. Third—and this is where blue spaces seem to have anadvantage over other natural environments—water has a psychological recovery effect. When you are sailing, surfing or swimming, says White, “you're really in step with natural forces there.”Catherine Kelly is a wellness practitioner who teaches classes in “mindfulness by the sea”. She says the sea has a quality that can make people thoughtful.“To go to the sea means letting go,”says Kelly. “It could be lying on a beach or somebody handing you a cocktail. For somebody else,it could be a wild, empty coast. But there is this really human sense of: ‘Oh, look ,there's the sea’—and the shoulders drop.”9.Why are blue spaces less popular than green spaces?A.Because green spaces are good to people's health.B.Because little research has been done on blue spaces.C.Because green spaces have more benefits than blue spaces.D.Because the benefits of green spaces are better advertised.10.Where are blue spaces superior to other natural environments according to White?A.Where there's water, there's fresh air.B.People living near water are healthier.C.Water can help people restore mental health.D.The sea can make people lost in deep thought.11.What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.The sea will bring you loneliness.B.The sea will hurt your shoulders.C.The sea will put you at ease.D.The sea will make you feel down.12.What does the author mainly want to tell us?A.People in cities prefer green spaces.B.Blue spaces help both physically and mentally.C.Green spaces have been out of date.D.Ways to keep us healthy.
