Soon the full moon rose, large, round and clear, shining in the deep blue. “Why not pick stones from the stream and make them in the form of SOS?” cried Jane excitedly, determined to save herself independently. Having finished it, she felt so exhausted and slept beside the stones. Tomorrow will be another day.It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Birds were chirping, the branches swaying to the rhythm of the wind, and the leaves fluttering like graceful butterflies. A ray of hope rose naturally in her heart. Suddenly, the buzzing of the helicopter came overhead again. It did saw her waving yellow blouse and most important the SOS.

The flirtatious “wink and kiss” and “sad face with a tear” emojis respectively rounded out the top five. The software maker on Thursday released the findings from its 2021 Global Emoji Trend Report ahead of World Emoji Day on Saturday.Adobe’s latest Emoji Trend report also examined the three most misunderstood emojis in the world. Eighty — nine percent of respondents said emojis simplify communicating across language barriers. And 67% said they think people who use emojis are friendlier, funnier and cooler than those who don’t. A slight majority of respondents said they are more comfortable expressing emotions through emojis than talking on the phone or in —person. "We strongly believe artificial light at night — in combination with habitat loss, chemical pollution.invasive (入侵的) species, and climate change — is driving insect declines, " the scientists concluded after assessing more than 150 studies.Insect population collapses have been reported around the world, and the first global scientific review published in February, said widespread declines threatened to cause a "catastrophic collapse of nature's ecosystems".There are thought to be millions of insect species, most still unknown to science, and about half are active at night. Those active in the day may also be disturbed by light at night when they are at rest. The most familiar impact of light pollution is moths (飞蛾) flapping around a bulb, mistaking it for the moon. Some insects use the polarisation of light to find the water they need to breed, as light waves line up after reflecting from a smooth surface. But artificial light can scupper (使泡汤) this. Insects areimportant prey (猎物) for many species, but light pollution can tip the balance in favour of the predator if it traps insects around lights. Such increases in predation risk were likely to cause the rapid extinction of affected species, the researchers said. The researchers said most human-caused threats to insects have analogues in nature, such as climate change and invasive species. But light pollution is particularly hard for insects to deal with. However, unlike other drivers of decline, light pollution is ly easy to prevent. Simply turning off lights that are not needed is the most obvious action, he said, while making lights motion-activated also cuts light pollution. Shading lights so only the area needed is lit up is important. It is the same with avoiding blue-white lights, which interfere with daily rhythms. LED lights also offer hope as they can be easily tuned to avoid harmful colours and flicker rates.4. What is discussed in the passage?A. Causes of declining insect populations.B. Not quite, if we consider the state of second language learning in schools across the country. According to a 2018 study, Europe often tops the U.S. in foreign language education in school. 92% of European students are learning a foreign language in school. In America it’s only 20%. In more than 20 European countries, studying a foreign language for at least one year is compulsory. In comparison, only 10 states and D.C. require learning a foreign language for graduation.I went to a public school in Pennsylvania that ranked onNewsweek’s list of America’s top high schools in 2015. Foreign language learning was not a graduation requirement. A common response to such stories and statistics is: So what? Why should Americans care about learning another language when English has recently seemed to dominate as the official language of the world? The world is globalizing faster than we can imagine. More than half of the world’s population speaks more than one language. It is also increasingly becoming the need for success in this globalizing world. Having the ability to speak a second language opens up the possibility of travelling and immersing yourself in another part of the world. This means people can feel other cultures, and traditions in places you were previously kept away because you could not communicate in the language. The teaching of foreign languages can be instrumental in bringing about peace and unity in the country we live in. Learning a second language can be an efficient vehicle to help to bridge communities. To speak another language means having access to a universe of different experiences and world views of another community ofpeople.8. Why does the writer mention Europe?A. America makes studying a foreign language compulsory.B. America is the glorious symbol of multiculturalism.C. America isn’t really qualified as the developed world.D. Keep away their own culture.11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Using a second language can bring harmony.B. Communities of people enjoy the great views.C. Speaking another language is reallynecessary.D. Learning a second language can be difficult.DHenry Cavill: Bring Superman to LifeHenry Cavill knew that he wanted to be a star at 16 years of age, after a chance meeting with movie star Russell Crowe who inspired hispassion for acting. My Mom Only Had One Eye1 M y mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.2She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The ne xt day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “Your mom only has one eye?!” and taunted me.3 I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, “Why don’t you have the other eye?!If you’re only gonna ma ke me a laughingstock!” My mom did not respond, I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have had said what I wanted to say. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.4 For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University, I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. Then I got married there.5 I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! And still with her one eye! It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.6 I screamed at her, “Who are you? I don’t know you! How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter!” To this, my mom quietly answered, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared out of sight.
Be a story; Beyond a story.

The passage I had just read was about the importance of environmental conservation and the impact of human actions on the planet. It was a topic close to my heart, and I knew I had to write a compelling continuation that would do justice to the theme. In the passage, the author highlighted the damage caused by deforestation, pollution, and climate change, and emphasized the urgent need for collective action to protect our environment. As I pondered on how to continue the story, I decided to focus on a positive angle – the power of community-driven initiatives to make a difference. In my continuation article, I introduced a group of young activists who had come together to launch a tree-planting campaign in their neighborhood. Inspired by the passage they had read in the exam paper, they decided to take matters into their own hands and make a tangible impact on the environment. With the support of local businesses and residents, they organized tree-planting events, clean-up drives, and awareness campaigns to educate others on the importance of conservation.Through their efforts, the community was transformed into a green oasis, with lush trees lining the streets and clean air filling the atmosphere. The once-polluted river was now teeming with life, thanks to the concerted efforts of these passionate individuals. Their story served as a beacon of hope for others, inspiring them to take action and make a difference in their own communities. As I penned down the final words of the continuation article, I felt a sense of fulfillment and pride. I knew that my story would resonate with the readers and inspire them to do their part in protecting the environment. But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. The ceiling of thick branches shut out the sky and covered the path in darkness. Jane looked around blankly, a shiver of alarmgoing through her. Soon the full moon rose, large, round and clear, shining in the deep blue.“Why not pick stones from the stream and make them in the form of SOS?”cried Jane excitedly, determined to save herself independently. Having finished it, she feltso exhausted and slept beside the stones. Tomorrow will be another day. It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Birds were chirping, the branches swaying to the rhythm of the wind, and the leaves fluttering like graceful butterflies. A ray of hope rosenaturally in her heart. Suddenly, the buzzing of the helicopter came overhead again. It didsaw her waving yellow blouse and most important the SOS. Upon its landing, so thrilledwas she that she threw herself at Tom and hugged him tightly, tears of joy welling up intheir eyes.“I miss you so much. Have you found the spot?”“Yes, in our heart.” But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. The treescracked andgroaned in the dark. A thrill of alarm came through Jane. Eventually, she determined on spottingan open area, awaiting another helicopter. She stumbled her way through the horrible forestsand climbed to a high place. No time to waste. After she flagged her yellow blouse, Jane sank tothe ground, anguished and defeated. Gazing at the sky, Jane recalled Tom and tears blurred hereyes. Terrified as she was, she fell fast asleep in the wild.It was daybreak when Janewoke up. And, as luck would have it, a helicopter just came by!Jane yelled and skipped, waving her yellow blouse. To her great joy, the helicopter noticed herand landed. What astounded her most was that it was Tom who sat in the helicopter! Out rushedTom. A huge smile spread across Jane's face and the couple hugged tightly for a long time. Itwas the narrow escape that made Jane perceive that love was priceless. Over the next years, achange came over the couple. Reasoned discussion replaced fierce arguments and politenessreplaced contrariness. They treasured the life and love more.
Solution: She stumbled her way through the horrible forests and climbed to a high place.a helicopter just came by.Out rushed Tom.
The trees cracked and groaned in the dark. A thrill of alarm camethrough Jane. Jane sank to the ground, anguished and defeated. Gazing at the sky, Janerecalled Tom and tears blurred her eyes. Terrified as she was, she fell fast asleep in thewild. A huge smile spread across Jane's face and the couple hugged tightly for a longtime.
