Lesson 80 The Crystal Palace【Text】Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteeth century was the Crystal Palace, which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world, for it was made of iron and glass. It was one of the biggest buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries came to see it. A great many goods were sent to the exhibition from various parts of the world. There was also a great deal of machinery on display. The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyth's steam hammer. Though in those days, traveling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe. On arriving in England, they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train. There were six million visitors in all, and the profits from the exhibition were used to build museums and colleges. Later, the Crystal Palace was moved to South London. It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world until it was burnt down in 1936.【课文翻译】19世纪最不寻常的建筑也许要数水晶宫了,它是为1851年的“世界博览会”而建在海德公园的。

Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteenth century was the Crystal Palace, which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851.1、首先这句话是一个由which 引导的非限定性定语从句,这个定语从句的主句是一个一般过去时的简单句,结构为主系表,从句又是一个一般过去时的被动语态。
2、the most extraordinary building 这是形容词的最高级3、of the nineteenth century 介词短语做后置定语4、Be built for为...而建造5、Of 1851是介词短语做后置定语修饰the Great ExhibitionThe Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world, for it was made of iron and glass.1、这是一个由for引导的原因状语从句,主句是一般过去时,从句也是一般过去时。
A is different from B用来表示A不用于BA is the same asB A和B 一样In the world 是介词短语做后置定语用来修饰buildings从句:be made of & be made from 区别第一种方式:be made of可见原材料Be made from 不可见原材料第二种方式:be made of由一种材料制成Be made from 由多种材料制成It was one of the biggest buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries cameto see it.1、这句话是由and 连接的并列句2、Of all time “空前的史无前例的”3、one of the biggest buildings翻译为“最大的建筑之一”One of +可数名词复数“...之一”,这种表达比直接用形容词的最高级要委婉一些。

one of+ 级+复数名词结构的语气比直接用形容词级 +名词结构要缓和些,不那么绝对。
试比较:Yesterday was the hottest day of the year.
( 语气非常肯定 )Yesterday was one of the hottest days of the year.
( 语气缓和些 )3.There was also a great deal of machinery on display.

Lesson 80: A worthy successorProfessor Fenton was retiring after teaching at the university for fifty years. He was highly respected by both students and colleagues for his dedication and expertise in the field of physics. As the university searched for a worthy successor to fill his shoes, they had high expectations. After an exhaustive search, they finally found Dr. Emily Watson, a brilliant physicist with an impressive academic background and groundbreaking research in her portfolio. Dr. Watson had earned her doctorate from one of the top universities in the country and had published numerous papers that had garnered international recognition. On her first day as a professor, the students werefilled with anticipation. They had heard of Dr. Watson's reputation and were eager to learn from her. As she entered the lecture hall, Dr. Watson exuded confidence and enthusiasm, immediately capturing the attention of her students.Over the course of the semester, Dr. Watson's teachingstyle proved to be a refreshing change. She incorporated hands-on experiments, interactive discussions, and real-life examples to engage her students. Her lectures were not limited to the theories and formulas in the textbooks; she encouraged her students to think critically, ask questions, and explore the applications of physics in the real world. Dr. Watson's dedication to her students was evident in her availability outside of class. She made herself accessible for one-on-one discussions and mentoring sessions, ensuring that her students received personalized attention and guidance. It was common to see her office filled with students seeking clarification or discussing their research projects. As the end of the semester approached, the students unanimously agreed that Dr. Watson had exceeded their expectations as Professor Fenton's successor. She had not only imparted knowledge, but also inspired a generation of young physicists. Her passion for the subject was contagious, and many students considered pursuing further studies in physics under her guidance.Colleagues, too, were impressed by Dr. Watson's contributions to the department. She collaborated withfellow professors on research projects, published groundbreaking papers, and actively participated in conferences and seminars. Her research was highly regarded in the scientific community, bringing recognition to both herself and the university.Dr. Watson's success as a professor and physicist was a testament to her hard work, dedication, and the legacy left behind by Professor Fenton. She had not only stepped into his shoes but had made a name for herself, becoming a worthy successor in her own right. Through her teaching and research, she continued to uphold the university's commitment to excellence in the field of physics.。
