We can infer from Paragraph 2 that the author ______ .A. thinks Alice is rightB. is uncertain of the answerC. hesitates to express an ideaD. wonders why the mother is worried9. What is more important for a teenager in the author's opinion?______A. His knowledge.B. His intellect.C. His character.D. His achievement.DThe year 3700,Earth is far too hot for any human to call it home.On this planet at least, man is nothing more than a memory - if there is anything left to remember the"wise man".But what about our wisdom -will any of it survive us?The conventional answer is no.Knowledge requires a knower, and there will be no knowing minds around then. But if information survives, perhaps in books or hard drives, maybe the knowledge isn't quite dead but dormant (休眠),ready to become alive with the help of other minds that develop over time or come to visit Earth in the distant future. At first sight, that seems to be reasonable:after all,we have done similar things with past knowledge. For example,we saved an ancient computer from a ship destroyed at sea off the southern coast of Greece, and succeeded in finding the meaning of Egyptian hieroglyphics(象形文字).Careful work can bring previously lost wisdom back to life. However, the key point is that there is a certain cultural continuity with those ancient times that allows us to reason and make progress in the dark:we know we are dealing with thelegacy (遗赠)of other humans.Without that link, the survival of objects and raw data doesn't guarantee the survival of knowledge. And a lack of continuity in language with any future intelligence would be a barrier.Knowledge is closely connected with language. When a language dies out,we can lose systems of reasoning that they contain. If that's lost, then it can't be recovered. All this means that other minds might not be able to fully make human knowledge alive when we are gone.It is better to concentrate on not dying out in the first place.12. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 1?______A. To present an interesting idea.B. To state a problem of the future.C. To inform us of the earth in 3700.D. To introduce the topic of the text.13. What do the words"similar things"in Paragraph 3probably refer to?______A. Developing the minds.B. Remembering the wise man.C. Making lost wisdom alive again.D. Learning from the ancient civilization.14. What plays the key part in getting cultural continuity according to the text?______A. Language.B. Intelligence.C. Knowledge.D. Information.15. What can be the best title for the text?______A. Can human beings live on?B. Will our wisdom survive us?C. How we can protect our cultureD. children to look after them in old age should hope they have daughters because daughters are twice as attentive as sons overall. The rescarch by Angelina Grigoryeva, from Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage.men do as lite as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members. Her analysis of the family networks of 2600 old Americans concluded that gender(性别)is one of the most important things that decide whether or not people will actively care for their elderly parents. In a paper presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men likely provide less care.Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study,a study which has been tacking a cross﹣section of over 50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 123 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours."Sons reduce their relative caregiving efforts when they have a sister.while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.""This suggests that sons pass on parent caregiving responsivities to their sisters."In the UK,the 2011 Census showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities,a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade. But many are doing so at the risk of their health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts who are not carers.(1)According to the passage what' s the most important factor to predict if people will actively care for the three years before I made a patient of her.Mrs.Jones was the dead body that I dissected (解剖)over the first two years of my medical training.Of course, her name wasn't all Mrs.Jones, but it seemed a little impolite to be conducting research into someone's body without even knowing its name,so out of courtesy,I thought she should have one."Me and Mrs.Jones,we've got a thing going on," went the song coming out of the radio as1unzipped the bag of her on my first day ﹣and so she was christened (命名).As the months passed,I soon forgot that Mrs.Jones had,in fact, once been alive. One day, though, she that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage.men do as lite as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full time job are three times more likely a patient of her.Mrs.Jones was the dead body that I dissected (解剖)over the first two years of my medical training.Of course, her name wasn't all Mrs.Jones, but it seemed a little impolite to be conducting research into someone's body without even knowing its name,so out of courtesy,I thought she should have one."Me and Mrs.Jones,we've got a thing going on," went thesong coming out of the radio as1unzipped the bag of her on my first day ﹣and so she was christened (命名).As the months passed,I soon forgot that Mrs.Jones had,in fact, once been alive. One day, though, she suddenly became very Johanson said it was more likely that Lucy's breaks occurred long after she died, saying that "elephant bones appear to have the same kind of breaks,It's unlikely they fell out of a tree. But the new research focused on "a small number of breaks" that are consistent with "high﹣energy bone﹣to﹣bone influences" and which differ from the sorts of breaks commonly seen in other collected bones.Kappelman responded in an email,"These appear to have occurred at or near the time of death."12. What can we infer about Lucy from Kappelman and Dr.Richard Ketcham's research?A. She got her name from a song.B. She had more than 35,000 slices.C. She couldn't use her arms properly.D. She made an effort to save herself.13. What does the underlined word "plausible" in Paragraph 6 probably mean?A. Reasonable.B. Creative.C. Surprising.D. Unbelievable.14. Which of the following would Johanson probably agree?A. Elephants are unlikely to die from falling.B. Lucy got breaks at or near the time of death.C. Other reasons for the breaks should be considered.D. Lucy's bone breaks differ from other bone breaks.15. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?A. Lucy didn't die from falling out of a tree.B. The newly published study was meaningless.C. The argument on how Lucy died will continue.D. Scientists will find another way to solve the problem.第二节(满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Alcohol addiction is harmful. It may ruin your life, family and career. Great families are formed by making time for each other, and by listening and caring. The good news is that it costs nothing to do these things.Last weekend my kids and I were sitting outside the front steps of our house enjoying some sunshine after washing the car and playing with the neighbor's kids. As we sat there I had an idea that I thought would be fun. “Anne, Liz, usually on Wednesday you come home from school for lunch. What about having a picnic in the park instead?” I asked. Both Anne and Liz lit up and smiled. “Yeah, Daddy! Then we'd even have more time to play in the school yard after!” they shouted. So that's our little plan today for a simple Wednesday. I hope it will become one more of a huge collection of special family moments, moments when we make time for each other and do something special together.A picnic in the park is something that works for us. But that is exactly what Alberto Acosta did when he was appointed Ecuador’s Oil Minister. For a relatively poor country whose main income is from oil exports, this idea seemed like madness. Ecuador is not rich by economic (经济) standards, but in terms of the diversity of plant and animal life, it is one of the richest places on Earth. For this, scientists studied trees in the Yasuni National Park in Ecuador’s undamaged rain forest, and they found over 650 different species (物种) of tree in just one acre — more than the total number in all of the US and Canada combined. Mr. Acosta said he would rather the oil companies did not destroy these natural riches. His idea is to leave the oil reserves beneath Yasuni Park untouched, in return for compensation of half their value, which will be done by the international society. The oil is worth more than $7 billion.Ecuador is not the only country trying to get richer nations to pay for not exploiting (开发)their forests. Both Nigeria and Guatemala are hoping they will be able to make similar deals. A spokesperson for local environmental groups explained, “This is fantastic though the plan has met with problems, both from within Ecuador and from outside. If only people in developed countries appreciated that these forests absorb a lot of the CO2 that their industries produce. I just wish they would take a longer-term view of this problem. Protecting biodiversity and preventing climate change means temporary loss, otherwise, we will all be losers — with consequences I’d rather not even think about.”8.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.The total number of tree species.B.Ecuador’s oil storage quantity.C.Ecuador’s diversity in wildlife.D.The undamaged rain forest.9.What was Mr. Acosta’s real aim?A.Importing more oil. B.Protecting the environment. C.Building more natural parks. D.Compensating the Yasuni Park. 10.What will the international society do?A.Guide companies to protect the oil.B.Develop oil fields near the park.C.Study the rain forest further.D.Pay oil companies 3. 5 billion.11.What does the spokesperson indicate in the last paragraph?A.Destroying nature means punishing ourselves.B.Natural forests can stop climate change totally.C.Developed countries will become losers.D.It’s impossible to carry out Acosta’s plan.Audrey Randolph, who used to be a librarian, is a car mechanic in London. But she didn’t find it easy to become a car mechanic. She had to attend a Centre, where people can learn a new job for 20 weeks. We asked her why she decided to work with cars. “My first reason was independence,” she said. “I also wanted to learn about how things work, using my hands. Besides, I’ve come to the conclusion that many people prefer to have a woman repa ir their cars.”When it comes to her experiences in the Center, she tells us about it, “I was the only woman among four hundred men. And some of them were rude to me, just because of my sex.” However, Audrey said she made the right decision. One hundred years ago women were second-class citizens in Britain. Men controlled everything. Not only that, they really believed that women were “the weaker sex”. Women, they say, depend too little on cool reasoning and too much on intuition (直觉) to arrive at decisions, and sometimes are not even able to think clearly. But in the past century a lot has changed. Two women have become Prime Minister, and women can now compete as equals in every kind of job and profession. They also have more control over when to have a family and how many children they want. Nowadays both men and women go out to work. Consequently the traditional roles played by them in the family have changed greatly. Those times when the man was the major breadwinner and the woman stayed at home and looked after the house and the children are over. Most couples share the housework and in some homes it is now the man who stays at home with the kids and the woman who goes out to work.12.Why did Audrey go to the Centre?A.To get trained in her job skills.B.To prove she is more competent.C.To show she isn’t challenging men.D.To fight against sex discrimination.13.What do Audrey’s training experiences reflect?A.Companies tend to employ more women.B.Women undertake more social responsibilities.C.Women can change jobs more easily than men.D.Some men still look down upon women today.14.What was the argument men raised against women?A.Women were serious about everything.B.Women’s thoughts were often unclear.C.Women’s decisions were unreliable.D.Women were weak physically.15.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Men Are Carrying on a Sex-fight.B.Women Are More Independent Now.C.A Woman Made a Right Decision.D.Men and Women Should Be Equal.二、完形填空I was driving my new motorcycle across North Dakota. One of the cells was able to calculate addition: the presence or absence of each of two chemicals would switch on a reactioninside the cell that would make it shine different colours. The other cell worked in the same way but could subtract amounts. This kind of biological circuit resembles a simple logic circuit in a computer. In theory, it could be used to indicate the presence of an infectious substance while in fact it failed. Most biological reactions in the body aren’t that simple, though. They rarely rely on “one input and one output” – instead, multiple inputs lead to different outputs. For instance, a high level of calcium in the body in the presence of a specific hormone may suggest one disease, but a high level of calcium along with another hormone might indicate a completely different condition. To be more practical, biological computers need to be able to perform more complex mathematics. However, it is hard to pack multiple calculations into a single cell. To get around this, Fussenegger and his team have engineered a multicellular system, in which different cells each perform a separate calculation and pass on the results to each other. The system has nine cells, each containing a biochemical reaction that responds to three chemical inputs – similar to an AND, NOT and OR system in a traditional electronic circuit. These cells coordinate their activities by releasing chemicals that pass from one cell to the other. Together, they form a fully biological circuit that can respond to multiple inputs.“Although it is not at a stage yet where we can test on animals, we believe it is the most complex biological computer ever assembled,” says Fussenegger. “This work addresses one of the major limitations in synthetic biology (合成生物学) –a lack of programmable devices,” says Ángel Goni-Moreno, a synthetic biologist at Newcastle University, UK. He says that Fussenegger’s multicellular approach enables you to programme the circuit and achieve different calculations just by connecting the nine cells in different configurations (设置).In the future, a biological computer like this could be used to monitor more complex medical conditions. For example, it could respond to a rise in calcium, a drop in a hormone and an increase in a biomarker, which together would signal the presence of a specific type of cancer, help diagnose it and alert the user to seek appropriate treatment.28. The underlined word “subtract” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.A. add upB. take awayC. split upD. give away29. What was the progress made in Fussenegger’s early research?A. A biological circuit was implanted in one of kidney cells.B. The indication of infectious substances became a reality.C. Engineered kidney cells could switch on biological reactions.D. Certain cells were made capable of performing mathematics.30. What has made Fussenegger’s current multicellular system so special?A. It has all the functions of a traditional electronic circuit.B. It is programmable and able to perform different mathematics.C. It has successfully packed multiple calculations into a single cell.D. It has been tested through a series of experiments on animals.31. What is the best title for the passage?A. Smart cells indicating various cancersB. Electronic circuit made from multi-cellsC. Programmable cells implanted in human bodiesD. Biological computer made from human cellsD“Two centuries ago, Lewis and Clark left St. Louis to explore the new lands acquired in the Louisiana Purcha se,” George W. Bush said, announcing his desire for a program to send men and women to Mars. They made that journey in the spirit of discovery. America has ventured forth into space for the same reasons.”Yet there are vital differences between Lewis and C lark’s expedition and a Mars mission. First, they were headed to a place where hundreds of thousands of people were already living. Second, they were certain to discover places and things of immediate value to the new nation. Third, their venture cost next to nothing by today’s standards. A Mars mission may be the single most expensive non-wartime undertaking in U.S. history.Appealing as the thought of travel to Mars is, it does not mean the journey makes sense, even considering the human calling to explore. And Mars as a destination for people makes absolutely no sense with current technology.Present systems for getting from Earth’s surface to low-Earth orbit are so fantastically expensive that merely launching the 1,000 tons or so of spacecraft and equipment a Mars mission would require could be accomplished only by cutting health-care benefits, education spending, or other important programs—or by raising taxes. Absent some remarkable discovery, astronauts, geologists, and biologists once on Marscould do little more than analyze rocks and feel awestruck(敬畏的) staring into the sky of another world. Yet rocks can be analyzed by automated probes without risk to human life, and at a tiny fraction of the cost of sending people. It is interesting to note that when President Bush unveiled his proposal, he listed these recent major achievements of space exploration pictures of evidence of water on Mars, discovery of more than 100 planets outside our solar system, and study of the soil of Mars. All these accomplishments came from automated probes or automated space telescopes. Bush’s proposal, which calls for reprogramming some of NASA’s present budget into the Mars effort, might actually lead to a reduction in such unmanned science—the one aspect of space explorati on that’s working really well.Rather than spend hundreds of billions of dollars to hurl tons toward Mars using current technology, why not take a decade or two or however much time is required researching new launch systems and advanced propulsion (推进力)? lf new launch systems could put weight into orbit affordably, and advanced propulsion could speed up that long, slow transit to Mars, the dream of stepping onto the red planet might become reality. Mars will still be there when the technology is ready.32. What do Lewis and Clark’s expedition and a Mars mission have in common?A. Instant value.B. Human inhabitance.C. Venture cost.D. Exploring spirit.33. Bush’s proposal is challenged for the following reasons except that.A. its expenditure is too huge for the government to afford.B. American people’s well-being will suffer a lot if it is implementedC. great achievements have already been made in Mars exploration in AmericaD. unmanned Mars exploration sounds more practical and economical for the moment34. Which cannot be concluded from the passage?A. Going to Mars using current technology is quite unrealistic.B. A Mars mission will in turn promote the development of unmanned program.C. Bush’s proposal is based on thre e recent great achievements of space explorationD. The achievements in space exploration show how well unmanned science has developed.35.
