However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not theones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese pre-schools, surprisingly little emphasis is put on academic instruction. In one investigation, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool tochers child development specialists, and parents were asked about vanous aspects of early childhood education. Only 2 percent of the Japanese respondents listed to give children a good start academically”as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group. The vast majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents. In the recent parison of Japanese and American preschool education,91 percent of Japanese respontens chose providing children with a group experience as one of their top three reasions for a society to have preschools.Sixty-two persent of the more individually-oriented Americans listed group experience as one of their top three choices. An emphasxs oa the importance of the group seen in Japanese early childhood education continues into elementary school education.Like in America, there is diversity in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools. Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend university-based program, it will increase the children's chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words. For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents' home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confmement(限制)and have strong opinions about everything.Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired. But then Banner, our lamb was bom. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.That is how I found myself on the road with four kids,a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They'd get back in the car breathlessand energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist—high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons. We eventually arrived at my parents' doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence. Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of journey— and the best part of yourself.67.Why did the author use t o take freeways to her parents’home?A. To give herself some time to read.B. To order some food for them.C. To play a game with them.D. To let them cool down.(D)Personality is, to large extent, inherent -“alpha type” parents usually bring about “affapring” offspring. But the environment must also have a profound effect, since if petition is important to the parents, it is likely to bee a major factor lives of their children. One place where children soak up “alpha characteristics” is school, whichis, by its very nature, a highly petitive institution. Too many schools adopt the “win at all costs” moral standard and measure their success by sporting achievements. The current pission for making children pete against their classmaters or against the clock produces a two-layer system, in which petitive “alpha types”seem in some way better than their “beta-type” fellows. Being too keen lo win can have dangerous consequences: remember that Pheidippides, the first marathon runner, dropped dead seconds after saying: “Rejoice, we conquer!”By far worst form of petition in school is the disproportionate emphasis on examinations. It is a rare school that allows pupils to concentrate on those things they do well, He merits of petition by examination are .somewhat questionable but petition in the certain knowledge of failure is positively harmful.Obviously, it is neither practical nor desirable that all “alpha youngsters”change into “Beta's”, The world needs types, and schools have an important duty to try to fit a child's personality to his possible future employment. Perhaps that excitement lasts through thefirst few years of school. But over time, many children are much (excited) about going to school because school bees a place of “all work and no play. ”3 years go by,students are pressured to do more work and to do it better, make better test scores, and have a higher class rank. It is therefore not surprising that by middle school many students lose interest in school and learning.Teachers face a big challenge in such a situation. 第I卷(选择题)第一部分阅读(共两节,满分30分)第一节阅读理解(每小题2分, 共20分)A group of people decided to climb a mountain together. They thought it was going to be an easy climb, so they laughed and talked among themselves and didn’t notice the sky growing darker. They soon got lost for they couldn’t see very far in front of them. They huddled together that night over a fire.No one walked too far away from the group by themselves because it would surely lead to death. They sat close to each other throughout the dark hours not just for warmth, but for the fact that staying with the group was their only hope for survival. After what felt like a century, the sun started its slow climb up the sky. They were now able to see as far ahead of them as they liked, so they began to go down the mountain. They still remained as a group at this time even though there was no real need. A bond (凝聚力) had formed throughout the group that could not be broken or ignored. They knew each other just as well as they knew themselves. As they reached the place where they had started their journey, they knew it was time to say goodbye. Feeling at peace, they bowed (鞠躬) deeply to each other. All of them kept the love they created as a group close to their hearts as they made their way out into the world alone.1. What was the difficulty the group of people met in the mountain?A. Time management is not necessarily working harder, but rather smarter.A lot of our time management has to do more with what we are not doing rather than what we are doing. Sometimes our mistakes will keep us from running at a full pace. Here are some time management mistakes we should all avoid to help us increase our daily efficiency:Start your day without a plan of action.Without a plan, you will have worked hard but may not have done enough right things. Time management is not doing the wrong things more rapidly. That just gets us nowhere faster. Time management is doing the right things.Work with a messy (凌乱不堪) desk or work area. Studies have shown that the person who works with a messy desk spends, on average, one and a half hours per day in looking for things. That’s seven and a half hours per week. If you have ever visited the office of a top manager, you can easily find that he or she is working with a clean desk environment.Don’t take a lunch break. Many people do not take a lunch break. They work through that time period in the hope that it will give them more time to finish the task. Studies have shown that it may work just the opposite. After doing what we do for several hours, our mind will bee boring. A lunch break, even a fifteen-minute break, gives us a chance to get our batteries all charged up again.5. With a plan of action, you can ______.A. work harderB. do the wrong things more rapidlyC. avoid doing wrong thingsD. get nowhere faster6. Working with a messy desk or work area, you will ______.A. waste a lot of timeB. find the things you need easilyC. bee a top managerD. save seven and a half hours per week7. I can feel the pencil, but the message doesn’t get through right. I have to hold the pencil tighter so that my brain knows I have it in my hand. It’s much easier for me to explain things by talking than writing. There are so many things I can picture in my mind, but my hands just can’t draw it the way I see it.It’s OK. I’m not plaining. I’m really doing fine. You see, you gave me a wonderful mind and a great sense of humor. I’m great at figuringthings out, and I love to debate. Through writing journals I’ve not only learned a lot about myself, but also removed a lot of obsessive (苦恼的) thoughts, by writing them down and considering them.Journals give you a place to write down your honest thoughts without being afraid of what people will think of you. There are some ideas for writing journals:●Draw pictures●Write poetry or short stories●Goals: daily and long-term●Respond to a magazine article that you are interested in●Write about obsessive thoughts and try to find what’s causing them● A list of things you are proud of (It can always increase your confidence when you need it)●Make a pro/con (赞成/反对) list when you’re trying to mak e a decision: most of the time thedecision will start to be clearer afterwardsThe best way to start is to decide where you want to write your journal. (Though it’s called the journal, it doesn’t mean you can only do it in a “journal”) . If you like the traditional style of journals, then use a notebook, blank paper or graph paper, whichever you like best. If you prefer to go digital, start a blog. You can make the blog public or private, and it’s a good way to keep track of articles or pictures you find online. (You can link to them.)Even if you feel there’s nothing for you to write about at first, you might be surprised to find that once you start, you can’t stop.4. Social networking has been in existence for at least 150 years, and probably longer than that. In the times before the invention of the computer and the World Wide Web (WWW), social networking was done in person. People who had similar likes and interests would gather together to share experiences, make new friends, and improve their businesses. On the Internet, social networking websites made their first appearances during the late 1990s. The first major social networking website in the United States was MySpace. MySpace allowed its users to exchange messages, share pictures, and make new friends in a way that was never thought of in the past. With MySpace, people who did not go out much could reach out to others from their own homes. In 2004, Facebook was created. It was first a website created for use by Harvard University’s students and teachers, but it soon expanded to include just about everyone. It is now larger than some of the largest companies in the world. It is a website that is changing all the time. Facebook has completely changed the way people stay connected with each other and the rest of the world. The way it works is simple. Users can set up a new account (账户) easily. All a new user needs is an email address to start. Once a person has created an account and his friend also has his own Facebook page, he can invite his friend by sending a request out to him. Once you get started, making new friends will come easily.7. What can we learn about social networking?A. It is not a new development.B. It made World Wide Web famous.C. It appeared because of the computers.D. It helped people develop new interests.8. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. MySpace is less famous than Facebook.B. MySpace greatly changed people’s lives.C. MySpace led to the appearance of Facebook.D. MySpace was improved by Harvard University’s students.9. What do new users of Facebook need to create an account?A. An email address.B. His friend’s help.C. High-speed network.D. His friend’s Facebook page.10. What does the passage mainly tell us?A. The way to be a Facebook user.B. The importance of social networking.C. Two important social networking websites.D. The differences between MySpace and Facebook.
