As we all know, sports classes are compulsory in Chinese universities, which serve as a kind of method to improve the quality of students’ health . However, it has stirred up a heated discussion among people as to whether it is a must for students in universities to take sports classes in university. In my view, sports classes should be compulsory at university because not only can it provide a platform for students to learn more physical skills and play an importance role in inspiring their interest in sports , but also it can do good to the health of students both physically and mentally, which certainly will exert great effect on students’ study.

In the first place, as sports classes are compulsory, students at university have to opt for one kind of sports in every semester and choices are based on their interest, which offers a good chance for students to learn what they are fond of and pick up new skills, such as playing tennis , playing tai chi and swimming and so on. We cannot emphasize the importance of learning new skills too much. Some students may argue that it’s schools that push them to do sports and that it’s just a form of education, which disobeys many students’willing. As a result, their passions in sports classes fade away. However, this is a matter of their attitude. We will also come across many things that we may be unwilling to do in the society in the future. What we should do is to change our attitude and then accept the reality . Otherwise, we may become losers.

Secondly, spending two-class-time in doing sports every week, students can improve their physical health and strengthen their body , which ensures their study basically. As a study on physical fitness and health of students at universities in China shows, the quality of health of students are decreasing because students tend to do worse and worse in the physical examination and they are easier to get ill. Besides, according to a investigation, students rarely spend enough time doing exercise in their spare time. Therefore, it’s quite necessary for students at universities to have sports classes. Many students claim that it’s no use improving their health to only take two -class-time to practice every week and that it’s just a waste of time. However, it doesn’t mean that students just do exercises for only two classes every week for schools to set two lessons every week for the course. Actually, students need to do extra practice after classes. For example, students who learn to play basketball have to devote much time to practicing playing it in order to play it well and students who learn gymnastics also need practice after classes.

Thirdly, having sports classes every week, students can relax themselves after studying as busy as beaver and ease their pressure, which certainly improves the efficiency of study . Moreover, it’s well known that doing sports enable a person to be positive and ambitious, which is of great significance for students at university. It’s common that students often feel tired and sometimes have no motivation to study.
