Up until(一直到) that day, I had been too busy trying to survive myabusive(辱骂的,滥用的) marriage. I had spent all my energy trying to run a "perfect" home that would pass inspection each evening, and I didn't see that my baby girl had become a toddler(学步的小孩) . I'd tried endlessly to please someone who could never be pleased and suddenly realized that the years had slipped by(飞掠而过) and could never be recaptured.Oh, I had done the normal "motherly" things, like making sure my daughter got to ballet and tap and gym lessons. I went to all of her recitals(背诵,朗诵) and school concerts, parent-teacher conferences and open houses - alone. I ran interference(干涉,冲突) during my husband's rages(狂怒,凶猛) when something was spilled(溢出,溅出) at the dinner table, telling her, "It will be okay, Honey. Daddy's not really mad at you." I did all I could to protect her from hearing the awful shouting andaccusations(控告,指责) after he returned from a night of drinking. Finally I did the best thing I could do for my daughter and myself: I removed us from the home that wasn't really a home at all. That day I became a mom was the day my daughter and I were sitting in our new home having a calm, quiet dinner just as I had always wanted for her. We were talking about what she had done in school and suddenly her little hand knocked over(打翻,撞倒) the full glass of chocolate milk by her plate. As I watched the white tablecloth and freshly painted white wall become dark brown, I looked at her small face. It was filled with fear, knowing what the outcome of the event would have meant only a week before in her father's presence. When I saw that look on her face and looked at the chocolate milk running down the wall, I simply started laughing. I am sure she thought I was crazy, but then she must have realized that I was thinking, "It's a good thing your father isn't here!" She started laughing with me, and we laughed until we cried. They were tears of joy(喜极而泣) and peace and were the first of many tears that we cried together. That was the day we knew that we were going to be okay.Whenever either of us spills something, even now, seventeen years later, she says, "Remember the day I spilled the chocolate milk?I knew that day that you had done the right thing for us, and I will never forget it."That was the day I really became a mom. I discovered that being a mom isn't only going to ballet, and tap and gym recitals, and attending every school concert and open house. It isn't keeping a spotless house and preparing perfect meals. It certainly isn't pretending things are normal when they are not. For me, being a mom started when I could laugh over spilled milk.唯美有道理的英语美文篇二My MotherAfter 21 years of marriage, I discovered a new way of keeping alive the spark of love.A little while ago I had started to go out with another woman. It was really my wife's idea."I know that you love her," she said one day, taking me by surprise. The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother. She had been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie."What's wrong, are you well?" she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news."I thought that it would be pleasant to pass some time with you,"I responded, "just the two of us."She thought about it for a moment then said, "I would like that very much."That Friday after work as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled(卷曲,环绕) her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant(容光焕发的,光芒四射的) as an angel's."I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed," she said, as she got into the car. "They can't wait to hear about our meeting."We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy(舒适的,惬意的) . My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entree(主菜) , I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic(怀旧的,乡愁的) smile was on her lips."It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small," she said."Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favor," I responded.During the dinner we had an agreeable(令人愉快的) conversation, nothing extraordinary, but catching up on recent events of each other's lives. We talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later she said, "I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you."I agreed.“How was your dinner date?”my wife asked when I got home.“Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined,”I answered.A few days later my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn't have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: “I paid this bill in advance(预先,提前) . I was almost sure that I couldn't be there, but nevertheless(然而,不过) I paid for two plates--one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you.”At that moment I understood the importance of saying, in time: “I LOVE YOU" and giving our loved ones the time that they deserve ...Yesterday is a canceled check.Tomorrow is a promissory note.Today is cash … Spend it wisely.唯美有道理的英语美文篇三Plant happinessStep one:Plant yourself deep in a bed of faith, and pack it down solid and tight. Drench(浸润,湿透) daily with positive thinking, and keep saturated(饱和的) just right. Mulch(覆盖) often with forgivenss, for this will help you grow. Quickly remove any seeds of worry, for they will soon germinate(发芽,生长) , and keep out the weeds of despair.Nourish(滋养,供给) disappointments with hope whenever it is neeeded, and always stay cool and shaded when you feel irritated or heated(激动的) . Trim away(修剪掉) guilt or depression, for they create decay(腐烂,衰退) , and cultivate with happy memories as often as every day.Step two:Harvest the lessons of the past; just dig, pick, and hoe(锄) . And nurture the roots of the present, for now is when you flourish and grow. Start planting for the future; set your goals in a row(连续,成一长行) . Spade(铲) the bed well for all your dreams to grow.Step three:Remember that grief is a natural predator(食肉动物,掠食者) , so learn to tolerate some damage. Protect your garden with daily prayers, for this will help you manage. Bury the criticism and complaining, for they are injurious(有害的,诽谤的)pests. Sow the seed of love wherever you may go--for joy, love, and laughter are surely bound to grow. Although the thorns(荆棘,刺) of life may be here to stay, justsprout(萌芽) a smile along the way...and be thankful for what you have today!。

Recently in a movie magazine I came across the title of a film: If I Were King. It has put me in mind of something entirely foreign to the film in question. I wonder what would become of this world if I myself were king. This is of course a ridiculous fancy, for being a king is the last thing I aspire to and also a thing I utterly despise. What the hell is a king? How can I still be so feudalistic in my mind? Moreover, if one is really bent on being a king, he will try to carry out his design by deeds instead of by words. But, to put it hypothetically, suppose I were king, what would this world look like?我若为王,自然我的妻就是王后了。

Okay, let's stop going around the bush and get back to my topic today.I really like to talk a funny story I have just heard.A lady called Lucy emigrated to United States several years ago.Her spoken English is not that fluent .And one day,she is just sitting on the couch with his U.S friends Mandy watching Sit-Com.A noise of bump had the attention of Mandy, which led her to go out of the house trying to figure out what had happened. Can you imagine that Mandy go straight out with merely a sweater. So Lucy shouted at her,"Lucy ,turn your clothes on." What suprised her most, beyond her wildest imagination, is that almost all the male in this country took their head out of the window.Admittedly,Lucy made a mistake here .The word spitted means Mandy is totally naked to the reason that male looked out of the window. The right sentence shall be,"put your clothing on."The story inspires you to take a careful look on the vast difference between eastern and western culture. That's full of it,thank you for your time!英语演讲稿2As everyone knows,English is very important today. It has been used everywhere in the world. It has become the most common language on Internet and for international trade. If we can speak English well,we will have more chance to succeed.Because more and more people have taken notice of it,the number of the people who go to learn English has increased at a high speed. But for myself,I learn English not only because of its importance and its usefulness, but also because of my love for it.When I learn English, I can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world. When I read English novels,I can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the translation. When I speak English, I can feel the confident from my words. When I write English,I can see the beauty which is not the same as our Chinese...I love English,it gives me a colorful dream.I hope I can travel around the world one day. With my good English, I can make friends with many people from different contries.I can see many places of great intrests.I dream that I can go to London, because it is the birth place of English.I also want to use my good English to introduce our greatplaces to the English spoken people,I hope that they can love our country like us.I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well.If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So I believe as I love English everyday , it will love me too.I am sure that I will realize my dream one day!Thank you!英语演讲稿3it is true that most of us value honesty highly. however, nowadays we often confront confidence crisis such as cheating, overcharging, fake commodities and so on. i think that we should be honest because being honest is not only beneficial to ourselves but also to others and the whole society. the reasons can be listed as follows.firstly, only honest people can be truly respected by the others and can make more friends over a long period of time.secondly, honesty, which is the traditional virtue of the chinese people, can make our life easier and more harmonious. thirdly, honesty can make our society more stable. a case in point is that singapore, a society featuring trustworthinessand integrity, has a comparatively low criminal rate.responsbility can be understood in many ways. for the parents , they have had the responsibility for caring for and fostering their children since the birth of their baby.for teachers, both in kindergartens and colleges, they also should be responsible for the study and life of their students, that is to say, teahers are the second parents of children somewhile.for us,as a friend of others,it is our responsibility to help our friends when they are in trouble or faced with difficulties. each one has the different responsibily based on their roles but we must take it for granted that we are responsible for the society.英语演讲稿4Good morning teachers and fellow students. Today we would like to introduce a few favorite books to you.My favorite book is (Italian: Cuore). This is a diary written by an Italian boy Enrico. The diary is about his life and study. It included various touching stories that happened around Enrico, the mottos taught by his parents, as well as the wonderful ten "monthly" stories told by his teacher during the class. Every word in the chapter describes the word "love". From patriotism to friendship, and to the love between parents andchild -- really touching. This novel taught me how to love, and how to learn from love.I really like this book very much. How about you? What is your favorite book?My favorite book is . Have you read it before?Oh, I haven’t read this book before. What is it about?Well, it is a story of a rich girl who maintained her noble character after the bankruptcy of her father. The story is happy ending. Can you tell us why you love this book so much?Sure. It is because the story taught us to be brave and to face the challenges and difficulties with courage. I am deeply impressed by the strength and perseverance of the little princess in the story. I have decided to learn from her from now on.Oh I see, the story sounds very good. I cannot wait to read this book as well.英语演讲稿5Someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. I don’t know who wrote these words, but I’ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. We are allin the position of the farmers. If we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.We are young. “How to spend the youth?” It is a meaningful question. To answer it, first I have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” Youth is not a time of life, it’s a state of mind. It’s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. It’s the matter of the will. It’s the freshness of the deep spring of life.A poet said “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. Several days ago, I had a chance to listen to a lecture. I learnt a lot there. I’d like to share it with all of you. Let’s show our right palms. We can see three lines that show how our love.career and life is. I have a short line of life. What about yours? I wondered whether we could see our future in this way. Well, let’s make a fist. Where is our future? Where is our love, career, and life? Tell me.Yeah, it is in our hands. It is held in ourselves. We all want the future to be better than the past. But the future can go better itself. Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. From the past, we’ve learnt that the lifeis tough, but we are tougher. We’ve learnt that we can’t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. Failure doesn’t mean you don’t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way. Failure doesn’t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder. As what I said at the beginning, “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. The past has gone. Nothing we do will change it. But the future is in frront of us. Believe that what we give to the world, the world will give to us. And from today on, let’s be the owners of ourselves, and speak out “We are the world, we are the future.”英语演讲稿优秀范文5篇终于写完毕了,希望能够帮助到大家,谢谢!。

Well, I thought we were. But the truth was that you had been 2)longing to leave me, not daring to tell me. On that precious night, watching the lake, vaguely 3)conscious, you said: “Our story is ending.” The rain was killing the last days of summer. And there I stand, I knew I was going to be the one left behind. But still I’m watching the lake, vaguely conscious, and I know my life is ending. 我仍清晰地记得故事发⽣的时候。

英语美文:给年轻人的忠告Remember, my son, you have to work. Whether you handle apick or a pen, a wheel-barrow or a set of books, digging ditches or editing a paper, ringing an auction bell orwriting funny things, you must work. If you look around youwill see the men who are the most able to live the rest oftheir days without work are the men who work the hardest.Don't be afraid of killing yourself with overwork. It is beyond your power to do that on the sunny side of thirty. They die sometimes, but it is because they quit work at sixin the evening, and do not go home until two in the morning. It’s the interval that kills, my son. The work gives you an appetite for your meals; it lends solidity to your slumbers,it gives you a perfect and grateful appreciation of a holiday.

1In a few years, I have not set foot on this moonlit path. The pathis the father's hand with the cobblestone, the moonlight under the dim light of soft. At the end of the road, the little hut on the side of the river was connected to my father. Father, do you still sit on the shore, blowing the flute plaintive, waiting for the return of his son?Loving father of piper. When I was young, my father sound full of my childhood fun, like the ribbon Creek, pulling my heart around in the father love of the harbor. My father hurts my only son, and he likes to use rough pairs.Hand pinch my face, regardless of my pain to cry, still silly smile. Every single day, my father took me to the river on the grass cattle. My father often let their cattle rope let the cattle graze himself from the grass behind the basket in his flute, muster cheek, blowing out the most beautiful music in the world. I leaned on my father's legs, watching the sunset at the end of the sky to dye my father's hair blonde. I love my father, the most beautiful sound of father. With the growth of the age, I began to hate his father, he was full of hate the smell of smoke, hate his yellow teeth; hate him back to the school to find me a basket of grass, also from the window just staring at me, I also hate him no skill, only know how to handle a few acres of thin, even my tuition has not been able to earn. My father and I were gradually separated. After I was roared for a few times, my father no longer went to school to see me barefoot, no longer nagging me to study well. He kept silent, and the only way to break the silence is playing the flute, such as resentment, such as mu, and in my opinion, it has become a symbol of raffish.I went to school to go to school. The night before I left, I walked up to the familiar path and felt a bit of love and love. The road islike the trace of the moonlight on the ground, and it has crossed my heart. I haven't returned home for a few years. My mother told me on the phone, I go after father's day, like a lost soul like, Chafanbusi, just go to the river to play the flute. Finally, I returned home at the request of my mother. It was the night at home, the moon was rising, and when I was walking on the path with endless thoughts, I met my father. Iwas all of a sudden cry, clinging to the father. I asked my father gave me a piper, his father promised. The siren sounded in the ears and choked, ringing in the moonlight on the path, remind me. I feel that the father bring love, feel unworthy of his flute, father love me, love my son. He has been blowing the flute for eighteen years for me, and I've only now found that it resonates so strongly with my heart. The road is beautiful and beautiful, it is the mark of the month. April is the road of the soul, the father is my heart!长篇英语美文摘抄2It's still the way, the way to the school. It has been wearing a lot of dust all the time, making it impossible to see its brilliance. Ican't find the scenery along the road or the end.But on this day, it looks like it. The red brick is covered with the original bare soil, mild suppressed, the soil will no longer have the sand filled impulse, red and white color was dotted with monotonous scenery, let the silent streets have a humorous mood. I embarked on this road and connected with the heart of the earth. The verdant green also replaced the former barren, although no spring buds of the primary green, no summer lush with the game, but they stand upright, dedicated to the surrounding land, people at ease. I was leaning against a tree, and Ifelt that the future had a different and long road, and whether there was a beautiful landscape along the way.At a glance, I found them on the way. They have a black rose like skin, hard and still firm eyes, shovel, hammer tools standing beside it.I can stay, yeah, the scenery is such kind of people as they create, in order to complete such a scenery, they suffer many times from the sun baked, they spend many youth when they are migrant workers from afar, they are the scenery of the creator, the foundation they are also the times. Maybe they didn't dream very far away, they only wanted to bring the future to their families, so they came to their strange city, sniffing the breath of the heavy city and doing their humble work. But they exist, is the city's roots, without them, the scenery of the city, high-rise buildings, beautiful downtown, lush green will be broken up. Their hearts maintain family and country, let each other heart beat, passion and power. The road is a landscape, they are —— the thousands of workers are more scenic. They are like the spring thaw, full of vitality and hope, all the students like summer, fully equipped for: simple and heavy: like autumn, and winter fruits: lingering sentiments, shy, proud and clank. It's still the way, but I know why I go, because it's the way to the future.。

Friends or 'Enemies?'When I was younger, my Dad used to tell me: "Boys don't want to be your friend、" He then left the rest to my imagination、At the time, I didn't agree、I thought: I can crack a good joke, I know how to shoot a hoop, and I'm a cheerful person (but not in an annoying way)、What kind of boy wouldn't want to be around that kind of girl?Turns out, my Dad was right、Not to be all "Samantha Brick" about it, but in my experience, single, heterosexual men aren't actively looking for an exclusively platonic relationship with a woman they find sexually attractive、This of course is not a revolutionary concept、In fact, it seems pretty natural to me、Now, I will be the first to say that it is really and truly the most wonderful thing in the world if the attraction is mutual、But the Powers That Be seem to like to play these plicated little mating games with humans where the guy we want to re-enact scenes from 9½ Weeks with sees our attractiveness level as akin to that of a discarded dishcloth, and the most physical we could see ourselves being with the guy who actually likes us is a game of ping pong over an especially long table、All of which means that someone usually ends up getting rejected、I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I have struggled with the scenario where I am not interested in a man romantically, but I want to keep him as a friend because he is funny and I enjoy his pany, or he has shown himself to be that rare specimen known as "a nice, genuine person, " or he simply doesn't mention his therapist in every other sentence、Rather than string him along and give him hope, I feel pelled to somehow municate to him sooner rather than later that we'll just be staying friends, nothing more、Otherwise, I think I am being unfair to him、Why should he waste his romantic stamina on me when there are loads of other single women out there who might fall instantly in love with him?The thing is, it can sometimes be tricky to reject a man and keep him as a friend、If the operation is not executed carefully, you may end up creating a "menemy、"It requires a certain amount of skill to be able to turn down a man's sexual advances or romantic gestures and then get him to agree to meet you for blueberry pancakes the following weekend and chat about the latest Woody Allen film、Some men aren't satisfied with just that、I'm not clear why、What's so bad about friendship? Everyone needs buddies、But I've seen men react poorly or simply fall off the face of the earth、I get it -- their feelings are hurt、None of us likes getting rejected、But in my experience, some men find it especially soul-crushing、I am only bringing all of this up because I recently had to go through this scenario again、I had spent some time cultivating a friendship with a man who, in my defense, I thought was gay、So I didn't see the harm in him buying me the occasional falafel, or accepting an invitation to see a film with him、Isn't that what friends are for? But a mutual friend shed light on his sexual orientation (straight) and suggested that his intentions -- and attentions -- weren't platonic、He had never "made the moves" but now it was all crystal clear -- that explains the way he had looked at me that time the tahini sauce dribbled down my chin!Since he had clearly been too timid to express his feelings, I thought I would be clever this time and subtly mention the dates I had been going on, focusing on the one guy I was kind of keen on, so that he would know that I was "unavailable" for heavy petting and those sorts of activities, but that I was available for things like roller skating, falafel-eating and shooting the breeze、Doesn't that sound nice? That way, he would known not to try to lean in for a kiss, and I wouldn't have to pull the Stevie Wonder dance and dodge him went he went for it、It was like pre-rejection, yet I was sparing his feelings because he didn't even have to put himself out there! I really thought I was being brilliant、It backfired, of course、Said man ended up sending me an email rant accusing me of being insensitive by talking about other men when he had "feelings for me、" As if I am psychic, by the way, just because I am a woman! How was I supposed to know that? I think in his mind we were dating、In my mind, he was my new gay BFF、In the end, I got mad at him for getting mad at me, and now the friendship has ended、And I have created yet another "menemy、"Look, I have also tried the direct thing: "I really like you, but only as a friend, " but you can only do that when the guy has made his intentions clear, and in my experience, they either cope okay (though rarely do I feel much enthusiasm for friendship after that), or they really don't cope well、I also tried the thing where you make them think they are rejecting you, but it gets quite confusing and only works if the guy isn't very sharp, and why would I -- or you -- be hanging out with someone not that sharp in the first place? As we all remember, Billy Crystal's character says men and women can't be friends in When Harry Met Sally because the sex stuff gets in the way、I do have single, male, heterosexual friends with whom I have an easy, non-romantic rapport, but I honestly don't know if they would walk away if I was sprawled naked on a bed calling out to them、I may not be everybody'scup of tea, but sometimes, I wonder if they wonder、And they may wonder if I wonder、If so, I hope they'll keep it to themselves、被拒后:朋友亦或敌人?

Becoming the Pillars of TomorrowHi friends! Today I want to talk to you about something really important. It's about how we kids need to work hard and do our best so that one day we can become the future leaders and pillars of our communities.I know, I know, you might be thinking - "But I'm just a kid, why do I need to worry about that grown-up stuff now?" Well, let me explain why it's so crucial for us to start thinking about it from a young age.You see, the world we live in faces a lot of big challenges. Things like climate change, poverty, wars, and injustice are really tough problems that need smart, caring people to help solve them. And who better to take on those challenges than us - the next generation? We have fresh minds, new ideas, and most importantly, we have our whole lives ahead of us to make a difference. But here's the thing - becoming those problem-solvers and pillars of society doesn't just happen by magic. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and preparation from when we're young.First off, we need to focus on our education. That means paying attention in class, doing our homework, and always striving to learn as much as we can. Knowledge is power, and the more we know about different subjects, the better equipped we'll be to tackle any issue that comes our way. It's not just about memorizing facts and figures either - we need to learn how to think critically, ask questions, and look at problems from many angles.Next, we need to develop strong values and character. Things like honesty, kindness, hard work, and resilience will serve as our moral compasses as we grow into leaders. We can't just be book-smart; we need to have the integrity and principles to guide us in making ethical choices that help create a better world. It's also crucial that we nurture our talents and passions from an early age. Maybe you love science and want to find cures for diseases. Or perhaps you're really creative and can use art to bring more beauty into people's lives. Whatever your gifts are, don't be afraid to explore them, practice them, and let them grow. The world needs every kind of skill and talent to move forward. While we're busy studying, building character, and developing our talents, we can't forget to look beyond ourselves too. Getting involved in community service, volunteering, and helping others less fortunate than us is so important. It opens our eyes to the real challenges people face and motivates us to want to make a difference. Plus, practicing compassion and generosity now will make us better, more caring leaders in the future.I know all of this might sound like a lot of work - and it is! Becoming pillars of society that can create positive change won't be easy. But anything worthwhile rarely is. We have to be willing to put in the effort, make sacrifices, and persevere through obstacles and setbacks. The future of our communities, our countries, and even our whole planet is resting on our young shoulders. But you shouldn't be discouraged or intimidated. In fact, you should feel empowered and excited! We kids have an amazing opportunity to shape the course of history and create a brighter future for all. We're not just the leaders of tomorrow; we're the hope and promise of a better world. So let's get started on this journey together. Let's work hard, dream big, and never stop believing in ourselves and what wecan achieve. The road ahead won't be simple, but nothing incredible ever is. With determination, passion, and courage, we can absolutely become the pillars that hold up our societies and make them thrive. Our parents, teachers, and world are counting on us. But you know what? We've totally got this! We just need to take itstep-by-step, day-by-day, and never lose sight of our goal to build a brighter future for all.Who's ready to change the world with me? Let's get to work!。

英语文章 either build me a new house

英语文章 either build me a new house

英语文章either build me a new house全文共四篇示例,供读者参考第一篇示例:Either build me a new house or provide me with a suitable accommodation. This is the ultimatum given by a frustrated homeowner who had been dealing with a multitude of problems in his current residence. The house, which was built decades ago, was falling apart at the seams. The leaky roof, creaking floorboards, and outdated plumbing were just a few of the issues that needed immediate attention.第二篇示例:Either build me a new house or help me renovate my old one. This has been a dilemma that I have been grappling with for months now. I have been living in my current house for over a decade, and while it has served me well, I can't help but feel that it is time for a change. The wear and tear of time are starting to show, and I am faced with the decision of whether to invest in renovating my old house or start fresh with a new one.第三篇示例:Having a place to call home is a basic human need. It provides us with shelter, security, and a sense of belonging. A well-built house offers protection from the elements and a place to rest and recharge. It is where we spend most of our time, where we gather with family and friends, and where we create memories that last a lifetime.第四篇示例:Either build me a new house, or else give me an equal number of options when it comes to choosing a dwelling place. These are the words that were uttered by a frustrated homeowner who was dissatisfied with the state of his current residence. This request may seem like a drastic measure, but for some people, the need for a new home is a pressing issue that cannot be ignored.。

儿子长大,父亲变老的美文 [父亲儿子和我英语美文]

儿子长大,父亲变老的美文 [父亲儿子和我英语美文]

儿子长大,父亲变老的美文[父亲儿子和我英语美文]My father still looks remarkably like I remember him when I was growing up: hair full, body trim, face tanned, eyes sharp. What’s different is his gentleness and patience. I had remembered neither as a boy, and I wondered which of us had changed. My son Matthew and I had flown to Arizona for a visit, and his 67-year-old grandfather was tuning up his guitar to play for the boy. “You know ‘Oh, Give Me a Home Where the Buffalo Roam’?” my father asked. All the while, four-year-old Matthew was bouncing on the couch, furtively strumming the guitar he wasn’t supposed to touch and talking incessantly. My father and I were once at great odds. We went through all the classic resentful and rebellious teen stuff: shouting matches, my weird friends, clothes and beliefs. I still vividly recall the revelation that finally came to me one day that I was not my father, and that I could stop trying to prove I wasn’t.When I was a boy, my father wasn’t around much. He worked seven days a week as a milkman. But even at work he was the task-master in absentia. Infractions were added up, and at night he dispensed punishment, though rarely beyond a threatening voice or a scolding finger.I believed that manhood required that I stand up to him, even if it meant fists. One day some friends and I buried our high school’s parking-lot barriers under the woodpile for the annual home-coming bonfire. We hated the things because they kept us from leaving school in our cars until after the buses had left. I thought the prank was pretty funny, and I mentioned it to my father. He didn’t think it was funny, and he ordered me to go with him to dig the barriers out.Can you imagine anything more humiliating at age 16? I refused, and we stood toe to toe. Dad was in a rage, and I thought for an instant that the test had come. But then he shook his head and calmly walked away. The next day my friends told me that they had seen him at the bonfire celebration. He’d climbed into the woodpile in front of hundreds of kids, pulled out the barriers and left. He never mentioned it to me. He still hasn’t.Despite our father-son struggles, I never doubted my father’s love, which was our lifeline through some pretty rough times. There are plenty of warm memories –he and I on the couch watching TV together, walking a gravel road in Crete, Ill. , as dusk, riding home in a car, singing “Red River Valley.”He had this way of smiling at me, this way of tossing a backhanded compliment, letting me know he was prod of me and my achievements. He was a rugged teaser, and it was during his teasing that I always sensed his great, unspoken love. When I was older, I would understand that this is how many men show affection without acknowledging vulnerability. And I imitated his way of saying “I love you” by telling him his nose was too big or his ties too ugly. But I can’t recall a time my father hugged or hissed me or said he loved me. I remember snuggling next to him on Sunday mornings. I remember the strong, warm feeling of dozing off in his arms. But men, even little men, did not kiss or hug; they shook hands. There were times much later when I would be going back to college, times when I wanted sobadly to hug him. But the muscles wouldn’t move with the emotion. I hugged my mother. I shook hands with my father.“It’s not what a man says, but what he does that counts,” he would say. Words and emotions were suspect. He went to work every day, he protected me, he taught me right from wrong, he made me tough in mind and spirit. It was our bond. It was our barrier.I’ve tried not to repeat what I saw as my father’s mistake. Matthew and I cuddle and kiss good-bye. This is the new masculinity, and it’s as common today as the old masculinity of my father’s day. But, honestly, I don’t believe that in the end the new masculinity will prevent the growing-up conflicts between fathers and sons. All I hope is that Matthew and I build some repository of unconscious joy so that it will remain a lifeline between us through the rough times ahead. It was only after having a boy of my own that I began to think a lot about the relationship between fathers and sons and to see – and to understand – my own father with remarkable clarity. If there is a universal complaint from men about their fathers, it is that their dads lacked patience. I remember one rainy day when I was about six and my father was putting a new roof on his mother’s house, a dangerous job when it’s dry, much less wet. I wanted to help. He was impatient and said no. I made a scene and got the only spanking I can recall. He had chuckled at that memory many times over the years, but I never saw the humor.Only now that I’ve struggled to find patience in myself when Matthew insists he help me paint the house or saw down dead trees in the back yard am I able to see that day through my father’s eyes. Who’d have guessed I’d be angry with my father for 30 years, until I relived similar experiences with my own son, who, I suppose, is angry now with me.More surprisingly, contrary to my teen-age conviction that I wasn’t at all like my father, I have come to the greater realization. I am very much like him. We share the same sense of humor, same stubbornness, same voice even. Although I didn’t always see these similarities as desirable, I have grown into them, come to like them.My father, for instance, has this way of answering the phone. “He llll –o,” he says, putting a heavy accent on the first syllable and snapping the “o” short. Call me today and you’ll hear “Hellll –o,” just like the old an. Every time I hear myself say it, I feel good. This new empathy for my father has led me to a startling insight: if I am still resolving my feelings about my father, then when I was a boy my father was still resolving his feelings about his father. He raised me as a result of and as a reaction to his own dad, which links my son not only to me and my father, but to my father’s father and, I suspect, any number of Harrington fathers before. I imagine that if the phone had rung as the first Harrington stepped of the boat, he’d have answered by saying, “Hellll –o”.For reasons to profound and too petty to tell, there was a time years ago when my father and I didn’t speak or see each other. I finally gave up my stubbornness and visited unexpectedly. For two days we talked, of everything and nothing. Neither mentioned that we hadn’t seen each other in five years.I left as depressed as I’ve ever been, knowing that reconciliation was impossible. Two days later I got the only letter my father ever sent me. I’m the writer, he’s the milkman. But the letter’s tone and cadence, its emotion and simplicity might have been my own.“I know that if I had it to do over again,” he wrote, “I would somehow find more time tospend with you. It seems we never realize this until it’s too late.”It turned out that as he had watched me walk out the door after our visit – at the instant I was thinking we were hopelessly lost to each other – he was telling himself to stop me, to sit down and talk, that if we didn’t he might never see me again. “But I just let you go,” he wrote.I realized that his muscles just hadn’t been able to move with the emotion, which is all I ever really needed to know. Not long ago, Matthew asked me, “sons can grow up to be their daddies, right?” This was no small struggling for insight, and I was careful in my response. “No,” I said, “sons can grow up to be like their daddies in some ways, but they can’t be their daddies. They must be themselves.” Matthew would hear nothing of these subtleties.“Sons can grow up to be their daddies!” he said defiantly. “They can.” I didn’t argue. It made me feel good. All morning I am anxious. Matthew and I are about to leave Arizona for home, and I am determined to do something I have never done. There is a time in every son’s life when he resents the echoes reminding him that, for all his vaunted individuality, he is his father’s son. But thee should also come a time – as it had for me –when these echoes call out only the understanding that the generations have melded and blurred without threat. So just before my son and I walk through the gate and onto our plane, I lean over, hug my father and say, “I want you to know that I love you. That I always have.”感谢您的阅读!。

演讲稿Build a life, don't live one

Everything around us that we call life was made up by people that are no smarter than you. So build a life. Don't live one. Build one.生活都是由那些比你聪明不了多少的人创造的。

所以,去创造一种属于你自己的生活吧!不要按照别人的方式生活。

My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn't believethat that was possible for him.我的父亲本可以成为一个伟大的喜剧演员,但是他不相信自己,认为那不可能。

I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don't want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.我从我父亲身上学到很多,其中很重要的一条是:即使做你不喜欢的事情,你也会失败,所以为什么不试一试做你所热爱的事情呢?You have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future, because believing that the dots will connect down the road, will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the difference.你要相信,当下的点点滴滴在未来会以某种形式连接起来。

Build me a son, Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble1 and gentle in victory.
Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone2 should be; a son who will know Thee and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.
Lead him I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion3 for those who fail.
His heart will be clear, whose goal will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.
And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility4, so that he may always remember the simplicity5 of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness6 of true strength.
Then, I, his father, will dare to whisper "I have not lived in vain".
