Children can learn effectively from watching television. Therefore children should be encouraged to watch television regularly both at home and at school. Do you agree or disagree?

UK children watch an average of more than two and a half hours of television a day. It fuels a debate whether children should be encouraged to watch television regularly both at home and at school. I disagree with the recommendation that watching television should be a regular activity at school and at home, as this would produce more negative outcomes than positive ones.

It is true that TV is of immense value to serve as a kind of educational tool. Compared with books, TV provides both visual and audio input at the same time and therefore can effectively enhance learning. A good illustration is that some scientific programs like Discovery or Geography are good source of inspiration and may open the door of wisdom and arouse learning interest in the young minds. Nevertheless, we cannot justify that children should be encouraged to watch television regularly because we cannot dismiss the defects brought to children by watching too much television.

The biggest concern is that too much television lessons TV viewers’ creativity and imagination. Being bombarded with TV images, their own ability to form imaginative pictures becomes severely impaired since they absorb information passively. As a result, it served nothing but stifled their creativity, imagination and critical thinking.

In addition, increased screen time is detrimental both physically and psychologically. It is a common belief that too much television could contribute to sedentary way of living, known as a couch potato, which is a contributing factor to the current epidemic of childhood obesity. And there are other psychosocial problems associated with excess screen time, which develops when young people spend too much time on social media sites and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression. Last but not the least, increased exposure to television could poison c hildren’s innocent mind, arouse one’s violent impulse and mislead one’s life outlook.

In conclusion, I think the main point here is not to ban or discourage children from watching TV completely, but to make sure that they do not watch too much TV or watch TV indiscriminately. Therefore it is strongly suggested that children spend a limited time in front of TV. Besides, parents and teachers should give guidance to children as for the contents they are watching.
