The Causes of Tess's Tragedy1.social environmentAt the middle of the 19th century, Britain's flourishing capitalism deeply affected the country civilization. The individual farmers had trouble in losing jobs and poverty. Tess's family was one of these farmers. At that time, it was a male-dominated society, women had no right to get good education and work. Tess just did the low income and hard work. Also, women's rights had not been protected well. It's unfair of society to treat on Tess.2.family reasonHer father was excessive drinking all day. The only source of finance the old horse had been dead. And she had lots of little brothers and sisters to feed up. Life was so tough, she had no choice but to work for D'Urbervilles to make money. After her father's death, the landlord took the house back, in order to her family not become homeless, she chose to become Alec's mistress.3.personalityTess is a pure and beautiful country girl. She didn't have good education and read about novels. So she didn't know beau's libertine behavior. She was raped by Alec. She is responsible for the whole family to devote herself. However, she was obedient to these sufferings. The only once revolting behavior was to kill Alec.4.AlecAlec was the chief culprit of Tess's whole tragic life. At first, he raped her in the forest to bring about that she was pregnant. Tess chose to leave him and give birth to the baby, but the baby was dead when it was born. Because of tough life, Tess had to return back to him and become his mistress with the humiliation of him.5.Angel ClareWhen he fell in love with Tess, she became happy again and found the real meaning of life. When he gave up her, Tess lost the spirit life, she faced the reality without mental reaction. It's Clare's fault to return she back to Alec to suffer distress again. Sadly, Clare's back didn't make up for Tess's happiness, it deepened Tess's sufferings. Finally, she killed Alec to revenge..。

Conclusion (10)Bibliography…………………………………………………..……………..……AbstractTess of the D’urbervilles written by Thomas Hardy in 1891, is a tragic story of a beautiful country girl , Tess Durbeyfield, it is the truthful portrayal of a pure woman ruined by the bourgeois society. This paper analyses the causes of Tess’s tragedy from four aspects. The first one is the main cause of this tragedy, that is the Victorian society in which Tess lives, because of the distorted social customs, moral principles and unjust social laws, Tess’s tragedy is inevitable in that environment. The second aspect is about Tess’s own internal characteristics, Tess’s weakness of indulging in fantacy accelerates her tragedy. The third aspect is about her parents, Alec and Angel, they all contribute to her tragedy. The last one talks about Tess’s tragic fate, since the world is hostile to human beings, there are many unfortunate coincidences in Tess’s life, so her tragedy is doomed. Through the analysis of the causes of Tess’s tragedy, I hope more people would appreciate this novel and learn to be more humanistic and sympathetic, and our society would become more harmonious and just.Key words:Tess; tragedy; causes; inevitable中文摘要由托马斯.哈代于1891年完成的《德伯家的苔丝》是一部描写一位美丽善良的乡村姑娘─苔丝的悲剧人生的小说。

An Analysis of the Causes of Tess's TragedyTess of the D'Urbervilles, published in 1891, is one of the Hardy's last and most significant works in his classified group, "Novel of Character and Environment". In this novel, Hardy reaches the height of his achievement as a novelist. After its publication, the novel attracts and moves countless readers for its extraordinary beauty and tragic fate of Tess , heroine of the novel.Tess of the D'Urbervilles is about the tragedy of a peasant girl, who was born in a poor family. When their horse is killed by accident, they lose the only means to make a living .So she is persuaded by her mother to visit the D'Urbervilles at Trantridge and claim kin. Tess works there and is seduced by Alec D'Urberville, the young master of the family. Then Tess gives birth to a child who dies very soon. Upon the child's death, Tess works at the dairy-farm at Talbothays, where she meets and loves Angel Clare, the son of a clergyman. But on their wedding night, Clare disappoints Tess and does not forgive her when she tells him her past story with Alec. Clare leaves her for Brazil. With the great poverty of her family, Tess has to work under the hardest condition at Flintcomb-Ash. Then her father dies and the family is expelled from their cottage. To support her family, Tess is driven to go back to Alec D'Urberville. Then Angel Clare returns from Brazil, being chastened and repented of his cruel treatment of Tess, but Tess's relationship with Alec stops her from living with Angel happily. She hates Alec and kills him. After a short happy life with Angel, Tess is arrested by the police. Who kills Tess ?Firstly, the social environment makes Tess's tragedy inevitable1 The destruction of English peasantry caused by capitalism is the root cause of Tess's tragedyTess lives in the late 19th century, in which the cruel capitalist exploitation has ruined the English countryside severely, Wessx is not immuned from the destruction. Capitalism brings a great harm to this old, rural and agricultural life of the place. The self-supporting peasants are displaced and impoverished. They are extremely poor and live a very miserable life. The family of Tess is no exception. Their life is so hard that Tess has to work under capitalist exploitation and oppression for many times. It is under the capitalist exploitation that Tess is seduced and ruined badly in her body. The death of the horse destroys the family's livelihood and finishes the family's hauling business. Tess thinks that she has dragged her parents into this quagmire. So she agrees to see their cousin and works there as an employee of Alec. Later, she is seduced by him. Furthermore, after sending twenty pounds to her family to repair the roof, she finds herself facing the long winter with only a small sum in her pocket. She has to search out for work. But there is almost nothing to be found. She has to go on to Flintcom-Ash which is a "starv-arce place" and the work of "awede-hacking" is so hard that few cares to do. Alec comes to her again when she is absolutely exhausted physically and mentally. To make matters worse, after her father' death, the family are evicted and have no place to live in. To support the family, Tess has no other means to choose, only to accept Alec's "help" for the second time. It is at the cost of Tess's happiness that her family can have house to live in and food to eat. The poor life pushes Tess into the trap of the wicked man, and the capitalist exploitation brings about their poor life.at discus2 The violence, wickedness of the vicious men, and the unjust hypocritical law which protects them are the direct causes of Tess's tragedy. The representative of the wickedness is Alec. Alec is the son of a rich merchant who adds the name of D'Uberville to his own name, Stoke, because it has historical association and the D'Urbervills are supposed to be extinct. Alec is a fraud as well as a morally corrupt person. His viciousness is revealed completely when she sees Tess for the first time. Tess is innocent and has no experience, and her living environment is so dark that no one comes to help and protect her. So Alec takes advantages of Tess's helplessness and sets a trap to seduce her. No law protects her. What she can do is to bury her miseries and insults in her heart silently. Later, under the help of Clare, Alec puts himself into the service of religion for some time, and he even intends to sell the house and go offto Africa as a missionary. But his wickedness comes to life at once when she sees Tess again, which shows that he is still "mighty insensitive" with the clerical dress. Alec deceives her that her husband will not come back forever. He even pesters and threatens her, "Remember, my lady, I was your master once! I will be your master again. If you are any man's wife you are mine!"(Thamas Hardy, 1993). Finally, to support her family, she has to bear the insult and be Alec's mistress, which later prevents her from living a happy life with Clare.Alec, the representative of capitalist power and violence dares to do what he desires, not only because he has money and power, but also because his evil behavior is protected by the capitalist law and rules. In the eyes of Victorian people, the young upstart squire is noble, while Tess is considered to lure Alec in order to acquire Alec's money. Tess bears all that injustice silently all along, however, when she defends herself for the first time, "Justice was done, and President of the Immorals, in Aeschylean phase, had ended his sport with Tess."(Thamas Hardy, 1993). Obviously, she is the victim of the unjust, hypocritical law.3 The social conventions and moral standards ruin Tess spiritually, the representative of which is Angel ClareAngel Clare, the youngest son of a poor parson, is the direct opposite of Alec. He is the "educated, reserved, subtle, sad, differing". He looks down upon the material distinction of rank and wealth. Angel goes to the countryside and to study the agricultural skills. He loves Tess and treats Tess "equally" which makes Tess trust him and fall in love with him. Because of his "noble virtue", Tess opens her mind to him and tells him all her past story with Alec on their wedding night, thinking that Angel would forgive her as she does for him. But he disappoints her. His intellectual refinement drops away. The weakness and flaws of his personality are exposed here completely. He cannot accept Tess. He considers her as a "fallen women". He still judges "purity" with the conventional value and moral standard that are implanted in him when he is a boy. He is the slave to the custom and conventionality. Obviously, what he loves is not Tess, but another in her shape. "When Tess, needing love more than herself, has completely given herself over to him, he abruptly withdraws and crushes her. The injury he inflicts on her is therefore much more severe than anything Alec could have done."(Robert Ackerman, 1996). Alec d'Urberville destroys Tess physically, while Angel Clare makes a fatal blow to Tess's mental. The loss of chastity does not kill all Tess's desire for love and hope, but Angel's desertion and her hopelessness of love for Angel make her lose courage to live. Because of her innocence and helplessness, she is seduced. But because of Clare's moral callousness, she is forced to comeback to Alec for the second time. Clare's moral callousness completely comes from the cruel social conventions and moral standards of that time.Secondly, Tess's character helps to create the tragedyTess's tragedy not only results from the external causes, but also the internal ones. And only through the internal causes, can the external causes become operative. The tragedy that results from the conflict between man and himself is the tragedy of character. Tess's tragedy is the tragedy of character. On the one hand, Tess struggles bravely against her destiny and the conventional morality. She desires for happiness and true love. On the other hand, she can not completely get rid of social conventions and moral standards of the day, which makes her believe that she has to pay for what she has sinned. She yields to the arrangement of the fate. The latter is the weakpoint in her character. When Tess falls in love with Angel Clare, she still cannot get rid of her sense of guilt. "Her love for him acts to blot out the memories of the past in her, but she is always aware that her forgetfulness is only temporary, that the doubts, fears, and shame were only waiting like wolves just outside the light. One night, when the two of them were sitting indoors, she suddenly exclaims that she is not worthy of him."(Thamas Hardy, 1993). After their wedding ceremony, Tess is sad by the time they come back to the farm. She is tortured by guilt. She asks herself, if she has any right to be Mrs. Angel Clare. Tess's deep sense of guilt makes her submit to Angel's maltreatment without resistance, thinking she deserves it. Undoubtedly, this kind of character helps to make external causesoperative.Thirdly , the creation of Tess's tragedy lies in Hardy's view of fatalism and chance happeningFatalism is "that view of life which says all actions is controlled by the nature of thing or by fate which is a great impersonal, primitive force existing through all eternity absolutely independent of human will and superior to any good created by man. "(Force,Lorrain.M.1996). Since Hardy spends a great part of his life in the countryside, he sees the decline of the patriarchal mode of life in rural English after the invasion of the industrial capitalism, but he does not understand the root causes of this decline and rules of social development. He attributes the peasants' tragedy to blind chance or mysterious fate. This kind of fatalism is revealed in Hardy's many works especially in Tess of the D'Urbervilles. "Hardy gave to the interpretation of the story in accordance with his pessimist and determinist view of the world."( In a sense, Tess is the victim of Hardy's fatalism, and her tragedy is the tragedy of the time when Hardy lives.Throughout the whole story, Tess is constantly involved in the mysterious fate which leads to the tragedy step by step. Her misfortune starts from the sudden death of the only horse. Just at that time, Tess's father learns of a rich family—Alec D'Urbervilles which is his lineage. So Tess is forced to claim kin and not long after she is seduced. After the great frustration, desiring to live a tranquil life, Tess meets Angel Clare and falls in love with him. Not wanting to deceive Angel, Tess writes a letter to confess her "wrong doings", but the letter is misplaced and escapes the notice of Angel. When Tess goes for the help of Clare's parents, it is unfortunate that she comes upon the sons instead of the father. It is bitterly ironic that while Tess does not get to see Angel's father, the one person who would certainly have sympathized with Tess and helped her, she does get to see one of his converts---Alec D'Urberville, the one person she wishes not to encounter alone in the whole world. Just then, her father's death and her family's homelessness make Tess find no way out. Angel is late just for a few days, although he should have reunited with Tess a few days earlier. These series of chance happening seems to decide Tess's tragedy, and each of them puts Tess further into the mysterious entrapment until her.In all, through the above analysis, it is obvious that the poverty, Alec's wickedness, Angel's conventional ideas,Tess's character as well as Hardy's fatalism are the direct causes of Tess's tragedy. But these direct causes are deeply rooted in the cruel social environment: the impoverished peasant, the unjust law and cruel convention. So we can draw a conclusion that the social environment is the real and root cause of Tess's tragedy.。

The Analysis of Tess’s Tragedy in Tess of the D’Urbervilles

The Analysis of Tess’s Tragedy in Tess of t he D’Urbervilles外国语学院 09级英教5班103012009157【Abstract】Thomas Hardy was a distinguished critical realistic writer in 19th century in England. And Tess of t he D’Urbervilles is the most influenced and monumental one of his works, which describes the tragedy life about a rustic and pure women called Tess. The subheading of this noble is “a pure woman” for she was innocent and pure although she had lost virginity and killed someone. She struggled against the fate with her tenacious vitality. However, she was finally ruined. What are the main factors that make Tess’s tragedy? In this paper, I would like to have a detailed discussion and make a further analysis of Tess’s tragedy.【Key Words】Tess’s tragedy; external causes; internal causes; the irony of fateThe Women’s Liberation reaches its climax in the end of 19th century. Hardy’s works reflect the thought of women emancipation which is in line with the zeitgeist. Besides, females in his works array themselves vehemently against the traditional mores and society. Hardy set his sight audaciously on countryside and paid close attention to the tragedies of common families. He is good at depicting the tragic fate of females, to expose the damages brought to females by patriarchal society and to criticize the Androcentrism.Tess of t he D’Urbervilles describes a virtuous, tough, self-respected and tolerant woman--- Tess. In quest of the family genealogy, the girl comes in contact with Alec D’Urberville, whose claim to the ancient family name is dubious. Before long the rich and guileful Alec manages to seduce the girl and make her pregnant. She gives birth to a child, who dies soon. Out of financial need, Tess goes out to find work on a dairy farm [1]. She didn’t give herself up as hopeless and blame everyone and everything but herself. She chooses to face setbacks valorously and undertake the heavy burden of the family without complaint. Later, in the farm she meets Angel Claire and they fall in love with each other and become engaged. At the wedding night, Tess makes a confession about Alec’s sexual trap and begs Angel’s pardon. However, Angel leaves her in disgust. After Angle’s departure, Alec continues to harass Tess. Out of financial need, Tess has to gives in and living with him. Then the joke goes on with redoubled intensity when the remorseful Angel Claire resurfaces and throws Tess into the abyss of despair. She stabs Alec for hurting her so, and runs away with Angel. They manage to hide in a wood where she is arrested. She is hanged later [2].There is no doubt that Tess is wretched but brave. She has subverted the traditional moreswhich Hardy tries to knock out. What kind of evil things convert the angelical girl to a murderer? What kind of evil things that push an elegant and gracious woman to death? What are the roots of Tess’s tragedy? As far as I am concerned, there are four main factors.1.External causesIt is the society that brings about Tess’s tragedy. She is the victim of social compression which not only comes from the bourgeoisie, but also comes from the bourgeois ethics and religion. Tess is a lugubrious girl who has been suffering privation and hardship since young. When she comes to the Durbeyfields, she was seduced by the guileful Alec. Surely Tess is an innocent victim, and she deserves people’s sympathy and help. But instead of sympathy and compassion, she is persecuted relentlessly by the bourgeois apologists. They regard her as a representative of shame and decadence.Later, bowing to pressure, Tess leaves her hometown for a faraway dairy to do casual labor. She falls in love and come together with Claire who recalls her hope of life and love. Claire is liberal-minded and he loves Tess very much not only because of her beauty and kindness, but also because of her diligence. He proposes to her, “I shall soon want to marry, and, being a farmer, you see I shall require for my wife a woman who knows all about the management of farms. Will you be that woman, Tess? [3]” We can say that his willing to marry her is partly based on the bourgeois egoism. Besides, at the wedding night, when he is informed of Tess’s tragic experience, he discards her ruthlessly, which reflects his hypocritical essence of the bourgeoisie. Tess’s dream of living with Claire blissfully is completely broken. Once again, she suffers the spiritual persecution of the bourgeois society. Her family becomes insolvent after her father’s death. Their life becomes more difficult and they are unable to make ends meet. At the moment, Alec takes advantage of the Durbeyfields’poverty and becomes a churchman. He reappears in Tess’s life and continues to harass her. In the hypocritical appearance of bourgeois religion, he dispossesses Tess inhumanly once again and makes her turn into a complete toy and sacrificial lamb of the bourgeois society.Claire’s return directly pushes Tess under the butcher’s knife of bourgeois criminal law. It is the capitalist society that finally ruins Tess. The society which Tess lives in is full of evils and crimes. And the evils are indulged by the society, while kindness and justice are against existence. Because of the injustice of the society, the pure Tess becomes a sacrificial lamb. Therefore, Tess’s tragedy is mainly caused by the capitalist society. It is the external cause of her tragedy. 2.Internal causes2.1 Lake of educationJuliet Mitchell, the feminist ideologist in England, once indicated in her book Women: the Longest Revolution that “The whole pyramid of discrimination rests on a solid extra-economic foundation—education. The demand for equal work, in Britain, should above all take the form of a demand for an equal educational system, since this is at present the main single filter selecting women for inferior work-roles. [4]” Based on this theory, we can say that lake of education is one of the factors that lead to Tess’s tragedy. At the first beginning, Tess dreams to become a teacher, but things didn’t work out. Due to privation, she has to step into the society and do many manual labors which reward a low income. She cannot get a decent high-paid job because she hasn’t got enough education. Therefore her life becomes more and more difficult and she has to turn to Alec for help. Another important influence education brings to women is that it can improve women’s intelligence and awareness. Beingcheated and seduced, Tess accuses bitterly that “How could I be expected to know? I was a child when I left this house four months ago. Why didn’t you tell me there was danger in men-folk? Why didn’t you warn me? Ladies know what to fend hands against, because they read novels, that tell them of these tricks; but I never had the chance of learning in that way, and you did not help me! [5]” There is an old saying in china that “Innocence is the virtue for women” which equally explains the social exclusion to women’s education. Under the control of such a traditional conception, Tess’s dream cannot ever come true.2.2Compromising characterTess has the courage to react against the traditional mores and concentrate on the pursuit of her own happiness. There is no doubt that she is an uncompromising mutineer. However, she cannot thoroughly break away from the fetter of traditional morality. There still exit some conservative and unenlightened ethics in her character. Of course she knows that she is an innocent victim of violence. However, when facing to the censure of villagers, she also regards herself as guilty. Her relationship with Claire also shows another kind of compromising in her character. The relationship between lovers should be equal. But Tess constantly raises Claire while blindly belittles herself as it is said in the novel: “She loves he extremely, she looks he as the god. [6]” What ardent but hangdog love! Her miserable past does not receive Claire’s forgiveness but relentless discard. Even so, her love to Claire never reduces. Letters after letters, she doesn’t regain Claire’s love. She loses her self-conscious and dignity in front of love. It is the blind and unequal love that deepens Tess’s tragedy for she gives up her right as a wife to strive for happiness.2.3InferiorityTess suffers great pain and pressure after losing her virginity. But we must point out that it is her inferiority that intensifies her pain. For Tess, most of her pains are psychological. She judges her own past on traditional customs and public opinion as well as religions thoughts. This kind of judgment not only warps her normal psychological states, but also brings her a heavy burden that cannot be evaded. It is because of the secular fallacy that this kind of inferiority comes into being on Tess, which explains that Tess develops an extremely deviant mentality in that social environment. In this way, she spins an invisible ethical net to tie herself. Her consciousness of self fettering is based on a extremely profound history and it has been a specific performance of the consciousness of the whole society.2.4 Lake of self-awarenessTess’s lake of self-awareness is distinctly reflected on her attitude towards love.As we all know, at the first sight, Tess is immediately attracted by the distinctive look of Claire. From Hardy’s pen, Tess is described as a perfect individual who represents the ideal consummate woman. However, there also exits a little bit of weakness in Tess’s characteristics. She falls into the love affair and paces up and down between two men all the time. Meanwhile, she constantly takes other’s needs into account while she always loses sight of her own needs and happiness. In a male-privileged society, Tess always places herself in an indifferent position as well as in the edge of the society. The image of Tess in Hardy’s pen contains his deep sympathy to the humble women in his society, and his furious lash to the so-called profane civilization, as well as his intense accuse to the traditional male-privileged society. Besides, it also reflects the most popular female image under the control of a male chauvinism in 19th, which is self-sacrifice,tolerant and compliant, as well as tough and unpretending. It is to say that women have to place themselves behind men all the time. Women that the patriarchal society praise and honor are those who are lake of self-awareness. The whole society requires women to sacrifice themselves and to take good care of the families and husbands. Tess is just one of the women who are hurt deeply and ruined completely. It is the complicated and ruthless society that Tess loses her virginity firstly and then goes into a painful abyss, which in some way directly pushes Tess into a tragedy.3.The irony of fateThere is no doubt that Tess is a paragon of innocence. She possesses simplicity, nobility and devotion so that she deserves of happiness and other s’ love. However, the fate plays a cruel joke on her and finally pushes her into a tragedy. If her father hadn’t met the Parson at the first beginning who told him that they were the descendants of the D’Urbervilles, Tess would not force to contact with the D’Urbervilles in quest of the family genealogy; if the horse had not died, Tess would not have to go and look for Alec; if Tess had not fallen into Alec’s sexual trap, she would not need to confess on her wedding night about it; if Alec had read her letter of confession and appeal, there might be no wedding and Tess would not be abandoned by Alec. But all of these coincidences did happen which become an important reason for Tess’s tragedy. After Angel’s leaving, Tess must decide to succumb to Alec’s pressure. Angel must wake up from his hypocritical dream of romance and come to his senses and return to look for a Tess now already spoken for. Tess must still love Angel and have no choice but to stab Alec—“the curse of her life’’----in the back. Alec is not worthy of Tess’ life, but “the President of the Immortals” must have his way with the mortals before he decides that it is high time now she went back to whence she came[7]. What a tragic life!4.ConclusionWhen reading Tess of t he D’Urbervilles, we can draw a conclusion that this novel holds up a mirror for the spirit of the time. The indifference and ruthless of the capitalist society is one of the main reason for Tess’s tragedy. Besides, there are also some internal reasons, such as lake of education, compromising character, inferiority, lake of self-awareness, which in some way lead to her tragedy. Meanwhile, we can not ignore the irony of fate playing a cruel joke on the poor girl. All of these factors lead to her tragedy and death.References[1][2] 常耀信, A Survey of English Literature. 南开大学出版社, 2009, 289[3] Thomas Hardy, Tess of the D’Urbervilles. 上海世界图书出版公司, 2003[4] Juliet Mitchell, Women: the Longest Revolution. Living at the turn of the century, she is influenced by the past traditional ideas and the modern life. In this case, she can not break away from the old social moral and find her happiness. At the end, Tess has to kill her own will and passion and return to her former destructive way of life. The cause can be devided into three groups: social cause, family cause and the cause of Tess herself. To support the thesis, the paper is divided into five parts. The first part gives an introduction to both the author and the novel. The second part makes an analysis of the social cause in the novel. The third part makes an analysis of the family cause. The fourth part makes an analysis of the cause of Tess herself. The fifth part is the conclusion, restating the thesis of the paper.Key words: Tess; tragedy; society cause; family cause; herself causeⅠ. Introduction1.1 A brief introduction to the authorThomas Hardy was born in the southwest of England on 2 June 1840 and it was where he spent most of his life apart from a short time in London and Weymouth in Dorset, the area that later became the famous “Wessex” in many of his novels. His father was a master builder who inherited the cottage from his father. Jemina, Hardy's mother, was a domestic servant but whose love of books and the countryside influenced young Thomas. From his parents, Hardy gained all the interests that would appear inhis novels and his own life. Thomas was a sensitive and intelligent child; he received education at local schools until he was 15 years old. At the age of 16, he was apprenticed to a local architect. Six years later he was apprenticed to a famous architect in London. During his spare time, he studied widely: language, literature, history, philosophy and art, and he even won two prizes for essays on architectural subjects. But architecture was never his desired profession. Soon he was writing poetry; when that failed, he began to write novels. Then under the influence of an editor of publishing company he met by chance, Thomas Hardy began to write novels. He wrote a total of twenty long novels, eight volumes (total 918 poems) and a lot of short novels named “Wessex”. In 1895, Hardy didn’t write novel any more, but he had a good reputation all over the world. When he died, he had already become a great man in English history, and was regarded as the last great litterateur. His works especially were famous for tragic spirit and destiny sense. He was also thought as a great critical realistic and naturalistic writer.Protagonist Tess possessed many excellent qualities in the book, however Hardy chose the word “pure” to describe her, which is an essential way to write Tess of the D’urbervilles. This challenges the traditional chastity idea, and negates the trimly-hold chastity idea that man is the center, exposing its unfairness and harm.1.2 A brief introduction to the novelTess of the D’Urbervilles, known as “novel of character and environment”, was the most outstanding and most famous works by Thomas Hardy, and in it the author uttered his sharpest social criticism. He truthfully depicted the impoverishment and decay of small farmers. They were mercilessly exploited by the rich landlords. This novel told us a beautiful but tragic story. Tess was a beautiful and kind-hearted rural girl. The poverty of the family forced her to claim kinship with the sham but rich d’Urbervilles. Tess was seduced and impregnated by Alec, the young master of the d’Urbervilles, a dandy that she did not and would never fall in love with. Tess returned home disgraced and later gave birth to a baby, who died soon. People’s opinion forced Tess to leave her hometown and worked as a milkmaid at a dairy-house, where she met with the second man in her life-Mr.Angel Clare, son of a clergyman. Naturally, the two fell in love with each other. On their wedding night, Angel made a confession about his past dissipation and was readily forgiven by Tess, but when Tess told her own past to her lover, expecting his understanding and forgiveness, Angel could not accept the disgrace in any case and deserted her to go abroad alone. Helpless and hopeless, Tess had to wander from place to place, doing the hardest work and bearing the harshest insult. Then D’Urbervilles who met Tessagain by chance, broke into her life again. Receiving no answer from her lover after two letters, and suffering from poverty and illness of the family, Tess, although not willing, agreed to marry Alec. Before long, the repentant Angel returned from abroad. Tess was led into a mess. Tess, putting all the blames of her unhappiness on Alec, killed him and fled with Angel. However, she didn’t break away from the punishment of the laws, and at last was caught by the police and hanged. As a matter of fact, the book Tess of the D’urbervilles presents a tale that how the society forced a clean, honest, simple, upright, hardworking, clever and beautiful girl to a hopeless situation even to kill people at last. This is a tragedy. As the protagonist, Tess is unfortunate in the novel.Ⅱ. An analysis of the social cause in the novelThe early years of the Victorian England was a time of rapid economic development as well as serious social problem. Towards the mid-century, England had reached its highest point of development as a world power. And yet beneath the great prosperity and richness, there existed widespread poverty and wretchedness among the working class. But the last three decades of the century witnessed the decline of the country and the decay of the Victorian values. At the social background, the working class was becoming poorer. The middle-class industrialists’ greed drove to exploiting workers to the utmost and brought greater suffering and poverty to the working mass.Thomas Hardy experienced fundamental social changes. Tess as a tragedy heroine, abounded in this period. Under Hardy’s pen, the heroine Tess was created as an attractive and warm-hearted pure woman, who had the quality of endurance and self-sacrifice. Tess had long been regarded as the most exceptional woman character in literary history. The life of this pure woman was tragic. She was firstly seduced, then abandoned and finally driven to murder for she was hanged. What was responsible for her tragic fate? What was the reason for a pure woman to become a murderer? We couldn’t help thinking over these questions again and again. From the tragic story of Tess’ short life, we could see in a deeper sense that it was the capitalist society of the time that had ruined her. Living in a society overwhelmed by capitalist Law, religion, morality and state apparatus, Tess, a poor peasant, inevitably led a tragic life and finally went to her collapse.2.1 Unfair laws and systems of bourgeois societyFirstly, in capitalist society, the direct purpose of setting laws and systems was to protect the interests of bourgeois, not for the interests of common people. Alec was a hypocritical rogue, but he went far and near with a false kindness. As a pure girl, Tess, brought up with the traditional ideas of womanly virtues, wasabused and destroyed by Alec, agents of the destructive force of the society. Because Tess was a very beautiful and attractive country girl, Alec, a frivolous young man, only wanted to get her for her beauty. In fact, he didn’t fall in love with Tess really at all. We could see all evils on Alec’s misbehavior. However, he could escape laws, was protected and lived freely. After outraging Tess, he only felt a little regret, not to take the responsibility for Tess. What about Tess? At last she was caught by police and hanged. Although Tess’ crime was more serious than Alec’s, the result was too different. Why did this result come? From the social rank, Alec represented the ruling class and was a symbol of the evil element of the society. He could do everything that violated the laws, regardless of other people's feelings and social responsibility. However, Tess belonged to lower class, so when she did the wrong thing, she must take the responsibility upon herself. From the whole novel, the author-Thomas Hardy arranged this contrast with the purpose of attacking the unfair social laws and system. Tess was a victim of bourgeois society. From all of the above, we can see at that time laws and systems didn’t maintain society safety, but to serve the bourgeois.2.2 Hypocritical religionSecondly, Tess’ destiny had close relations with hypocritical religion. For a hypocritical and immoral man, Alec became a bourgeoisie and new-rich by doing business. Then when Tess was forced to visit D’Urbervilles family, she met Alec for the first time. When she worked in D’Urbervilles, he tried to seduce and impregnate Tess by fair means or foul and made her no more maiden, but quoting the Bible, he thought that all the responsibility was attributed to Tess, and he didn’t have any crime. Then Tess met Alec again by chance, and she found that Alec, who once did harm to her, became a wandering preacher and had been converted to Christianity by Angel's father, the converted Clare. Both Alec and Tess were shocked by their encounter, and Alec appallingly begged Tess never to tempt him again. Soon after, however, he was again begging Tess to marry him, having turned his back on his religious ways.Alec-a rapist could be forgiven by God and allowed to do everything once more, but Tess- an innocent girl wasn’t forgiven. It showed the real essence of hypocritical religion. To every reader’s surprise, when Alec turned up once again, he became a parson. Alec- a flunky could put on religionary clothes and went to do missionary work. He had become a converted man then, who was sorry for his past behavior. And in order to make up for his fault, he decided to marry Tess. Suffering from the poverty of the family and illness, Tess, although not willing, agreed to marry Alec. At the beginning of the novel, Alec turned up as a hypocritical rogue, at last became a parson. There was a great contrast between goodness and evil. The real essence of religionwas more and more clear. These absurd matters directly revealed hypocritical character of religion. From these facts, people can see that Holy religion was not holy, only a tool for cheating the common people. Because of poverty, Tess had no opportunity for studying and lacked of scientific knowledge. Although Tess, a peasant girl, felt suspicious about Alec’s missionary work, they had to accept these fatuous ideas and consented to live with Alec. In the final analysis, poverty decided Tess’ fate. People’ poverty was created by society, so Tess’ fate had close relation with society at the times.2.3 Traditional social moralityOn their wedding, Angel and Tess both confessed error, Angel told Tess about an affair he had with an older woman in London, and Tess told Angel about her history with Alec. Tess forgave Angel, but Angel couldn’t forgive Tess; he gave her some money and boarded a ship bound for Brazil. Tess didn’t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defend herself so that she lost her innocence and that’s all! Angel also did the wrong thing and it was even more serious than Tess’s crime but he was not blamed for it. Why is it always the woman who pays?In the past, there was a culture, which didn’t think of women as human beings. If you asked one if he was the oldest in his family, he would probably answer “the oldest one” even if he had some elder sisters. If you asked why then he would say, “Ha, they are not included!” People gave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep the family name going. They thought girls had no use for the family. They would be married and go to live with their husbands’ home and be their wives some day sooner or later. So they were extremely hard on girls. Traditionally, people think: Girls should be hard working, faithful, loyal, intelligent, and virtuous and the most important thing was she must be a maiden! If her husband was the first man who touched her then she was a good girl, a good wife no matter how she thought. If she wasn’t, then she would gain a very bad reputation and nobody would dare to go near her. What about men? People did not care whether he was an experienced man or not, nor did they care about his character. They thought man was equal to power and power was equal to rights. So Angel was deeply influenced by traditional conventions. So the intellectual and free-thinking Angel was the 'slave to custom and conventionality' and the relatively ignorant Tess was the true humanist.Angel had mixed two things in his dull brain, theology and morals, which in the primitive days of mankind had been quite distinct. In the end, his intentions were good, yet it was too late. Traditional morality deeply hurt Tess and also damaged their happiness. Hypocritical moral standard of bourgeois society could be regardedas one cause of Tess’s destruction. Two lovers unwillingly left each other because of conventional prejudice deep-rooted in capitalism society. In today's society, which is more free and liberal, we should do away with those decaying values and ideas, and do our best to respect ourselves and others, and cherish our lives.Ⅲ. An analysis of the family cause in the novelThe Victorian England was a time of rapid economic development as well as serious social problem. The middle-class life of the time was characterized by prosperity, respectability and material progress. And yet beneath the great prosperity and richness, there existed widespread poverty and wretchedness among the working class. Because of capitalist’ invasion, in the towns and cities where new factories and mines bloomed, population grew at a high rate. Workers and their families crowed in the dirty and insanitary slums. The working conditions of workers were unimaginably brutal, especially in textile factories and coal mines where women and children were widely employed. The worsening living and working conditions made the mass unemployed. Tess was born in a peasant family and could not break away from this disaster.3.1 Family backgroundOn the one hand, all family background decided that Tess’ tragedy would happen. Tess was born in a poor family. Her family belonged to unwelcome and between the beetle and the block family. As the eldest child of the family (6 younger brothers and sisters, from 3 to 11 years old), the burden of poverty rested on Tess at any moment. At the same time Tess deeply loved her brothers and sisters at all times. He couldn't put up with their poor life and wanted to make her family happy and lively. She had to help the parents to support the whole family. She was responsible and did her best for the family. In order to make money, Tess had to drive for the haggling business instead of her father. Unluckily, on the road the horse “Prince” died in a traffic accident. An innocent and kind girl-Tess convinced she had murdered Prince, felt responsible for her family's subsequent lack of livelihood and therefore complied with Joan's wish that she went in search of their rich relations. She would sacrifice herself for the sake of the whole family. Although she had taken all the responsibility upon herself, but all family background decided that the tragedy would happen sooner or later, just the form was different. On the other hand it was her pregnancy by Alec. Tess's family is very poor, so she lost many chances to study and knew little. She didn’t know how to protect herself, because she had no chance to study in school and the people around herself didn't help her . From the fact we can know the finally cause is poverty. Poverty decided her fate. However the poverty of her family was created by society and reflectedcapitalism outlook. So capitalist society should be responsible for the tragic life of Tess. This novel has for its setting the agricultural region of the southern countries of England. The writer truthfully depicts the impoverishment and decay of small farmers who became hired field hands and roamed the country in search of seasonal job. These laborers are mercilessly exploited by the rich landowners. In this novel, we can see clearly that one of the real reasons that led to her extermination is her impoverishment.3.2 Parents’ influence on TessTess Durbeyfield suffered a great deal of tribulation in her tragic life. Although her life was filled with misfortune, she should not take all responsibilities for her tragic events. Her parents also had many responsibilities. Tess’ parents - Mr. and Mrs. Durbyfield’ ideas clung to their obsolete idea of the family in total ignorance of the reality had a great effect on Tess’ in mind. At Tess’ age, Tess was completely independent in life and worked hard in order to make better life for all her family. Under her parents’ influence, Tess had to do something that she didn’t like. One of the first tragedies in Tess' life that seemed to lead to all the others, was when she was taking a load of bees to the market she fell asleep and accidentally killed the horse. This was not Tess' fault. In the first place, it wasn't her responsibility to take the bees to the market. It was the responsibility of her drunken father. If anyone was to blame for being irresponsible, it was Tess' parents. Tess was always doing work her parents should be doing because her parents were too lazy and Tess felt responsible for supporting the family. The night before Tess left, her parents went off to a bar while Tess was left at home to take care of the family and the chores.Another tragedy in the life of Tess Durbeyfield was her pregnancy by Alec. At first, one may think it is all her fault for getting pregnant, but if one takes a closer look at the situation Tess was really in, it was quite obvious that she was, once again, a victim of misfortune. Tess was a victim of her parents' social aspirations to ascend the social scale. The desire to leap from low, poor farmers to aristocrats was almost humorous. They made the great mistake of believing that a name indicated aristocracy and the irony was that Alec D'Uberville who actually had the ancient aristocratic name was anything but a gentleman. Her mother even consulted a fortune-teller book for guidance. But Tess did not know Alec was the false descendent of an ancient noble family, the d'Urbervilles and when the lascivious Alec D'Urberville, Mrs. D'Uberville's son, procured her a job tending fowls on theD'Urberville estate, Tess had no choice but to accept. When Tess worked there, shewas seduced and impregnated by Alec. Tess' mother never educated her about some ofthe essential facts of life and Tess did not know what most men liked. In addition,Tess' selfish mother wanted her to marry Alec so that Durbeyfield family could be financially well off. She did not think about the best interests of Tess.Ⅳ. The cause of Tess herself in the novelAs a successful female figure Hardy contributed to the literary world, the character of Tess was multi-dimensional. Although the tragedy of Tess was largely caused by the social surroundings in the Victorian Age, it was still improper to concentrate on one thing but neglect everything else. The character of Tess is also another reason. “The tragedy of Tess is also a tragedy of her character in other words. The character of Tess is one factor to cause her tragic ending.”From the novel we can see that Tess showed an inflexible courage to the roughlife and firm pursuit of true love. Though she was always under the control of fate, she didn’t give up hope. On this point it is worthy of being appreciating, but her personality is not perfect. One’s character decides his fate. The mental and emotionalmake-up of Tess also accounts for her own final tragedy. Hardy was a fatalist. Inthe viewpoint of Hardy, it was fate that caused the destruction of Tess. Hardy believed that everyone was a toy in the hands of fate, and that fate was particularly harsh to women. In the subtitle, Hardy addressed his main character as a “Pure Woman”. Tess indeed embodied many good virtues: honesty, loyalty, responsibility, and beauty. However, Tess had her faults such as her innocence, kindness and weakness.4.1 Her innocence and kindnessTess lived at the end of 19th century. The unreasonable, marble hearted, insatiably landlords had super economic exploitation to the oppressed people, so the peasants were becoming poorer and poorer and in a state of starvation. Tess was bornin a peasant family and led a simple and beautiful though primitive rural life whichwas gradually declining and disappearing as England marched into an industrial country. Tess, a pure woman, was brought up with the traditional idea of womanly virtues. When Tess fell in love with Angel, Tess’ mother advised her daughter not to reveal her past to Angel. Yet, Tess thought that she could deserve the love of Angelonly when she told him about her past. Tess was too innocent and kind from what she thought and what she said to Angel on wedding night. Angel had been influenced by social conventions, so he could not accept Tess because of her past sin. Tess adheredto no doctrine or tradition and believed Angel would forgive her past.In her opinion, Tess thought that the world had the appearance of innocence.Everything was clean, beautiful and untouched, just like she was in the beginning of the novel. Her attempt to remove this sexual component of herself by making herself less attractive therefore represented a measure of self-defense. Tess mutilated herself in order to ward off the attention that had damaged her. If her innocent and kindness was a merit, it was just this merit that brought her a series of bad luck.4.2 Her weaknessStill, even if there are numerous shinning points in the character of Tess, the weakness is also an essential part of her character. Firstly, the spirit of revolt was a major characteristic of Tess. Her sharp struggle with feudalism and capitalist morality, laws and social environment represented the spirit of revolt on Tess. Although Tess needed to suffer all agonies, she kept pursuing true love. Nevertheless, it was really brave for Tess to struggle with her social surroundings from the beginning to the end but she could not get rid of public moral judgment that she suffered from when she faced her true love, Angel in the novel. It is a pity that she also used public moral judgment to treat herself when she suffered from the public moral judgment after Alec seduced her. Also, because of the weakness in Tess, it is logical for readers to accept her tragic ending. While she was being tortured by social judgments and old moral, she was judging herself by the very standards she fought against. Tess was a young woman who tended to find herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, previously, it was accepted as a view that Tess is a victim of violence. She is innocent. But, with further research on Tess and her tragedy, another view has become popular, that is, she was a victim, but she was also, at times, irresponsibleIn details, Tess didn’t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defend herself so that she lost her innocence and that’s all! Angel also did the wrong thing and it was even more serious than Tess’s crime but he was not blamed for it. Why is it always the woman who pays? Why are they always hurt? Why was Tess’s girlish purity lost? Why does the wrong man take the wrong woman? Why do the bad often ruin the good? Why is beauty damaged by ugliness? Women are too weak! Thousands of years of history have shown us that women have always been treated unfairly!Tess felt guilty about her error with Alec. Hardy looked very closely at this feeling of guilt and suggested that it was unnecessary for a number of reasons. Firstly, although she had broken an accepted social law, the villagers of Martlott did not morally censure her. She had an illegitimate child, but they still accepted her as an individual, a member of the community, and did not look upon her as an outcast. However, Tess imagined her guilt to be a natural consequence of her actions, not only in the eyes of the community but also in the eyes of nature. She looked upon herselfas a figure of Guilt intruding into the haunts of innocence. But all the while she was making a distinction where there was no difference. She had been made to break an accepted social law, but no law known to the environment in which she fancied herself such an anomaly. Her mind was tormented by 'a crowd of moral hobgoblins' which had been put there by her exposure to Christianity and which perverted her natural inclinations.Apart from fierce Alec and hypocritical Clare, it is the weakness of her character that leads to her sad fate. Tess was able to fight against the unfairness of the society. She could face various difficulties in life bravely, yet she couldn’t extricate herself from traditional moral principles. She was aware that she was the victim of social violence and moral principles. On the other hand, though she dared to beat back the unjustness, she couldn’t break with traditional morality completely.Ⅴ. ConclusionA lot of reflection was left by Hardy through his creation of Tess’s tragedy. Tess was a strong woman throughout the novel. She stood up for herself and refused to crumble under pressure. It is true Tess should deserve respect because of enduring a great deal of pain. Yet, for her tragedy, it is not proper to blame solely on the unequal society that Tess lived in.The pessimistic atmosphere enveloped the novel and always made people depressed. Thomas Hardy dared to offend the optimism of the capitalistic world, therefore, he was attacked by critics, though in this novel we can find some colors of fatalism. There is also bitter and sharp criticism and even open challenge of the irrational, hypocritical and unfair Victorian institutions, conventions and morals which strangle the individual will and destroy natural human emotions and relationships. The conflicts between the traditional and the modern, between the old rural value of respectability and honesty and the new utilitarian commercialism, between the old, false social moral and the natural human passion, etc. were all closely set in a realistic background true to the very time and the very place. On the one hand, his heroine, Tess in her desperate struggle for personal family’s happiness, was all vividly and realistically depicted. On the other hand, Hardy presented a vivid realistic picture of the English society by exposing the cruelty, hypocrisy and other evils of the upper classes, and by showing the misery and suffering of the poor.Tess was just a victim of economic oppression and social injustice. In a word, the capitalist society was responsible for the misery and sufferings of the poor people. In capitalist society, women were eager to break away from the bondageinflicted on them by the society, yet they found that the society made it difficult for them to realize their desire. Tess was a victim of the environment. She was ruined by the bourgeois society. (sexual discrimination; wide gap between the rich and the poor) To be more exact, the disintegration (break up into small pieces) of English peasantry and the hypocritical moral standard of bourgeois society may be regarded as one cause of Tess’s destruction. Furthermore, through the analysis of the tragedy, the hypocrisy of law, religion, morality, ethics and marrying system are unfolded to the reader. By studying Tess’tragedy, we can better understand Tess comprehensively and objectively, which embodies the progressive significance of Hardy’s novel.Tess’ beautiful life has destroyed, and her tragedy is involved in the author’s pessimism fatalism with her personality, but these reasons all have direct contacts with capitalist society at that time. It is all sorts of reflection of the capitalist society. Her ruin is inevitable, and can’t be escaped in the capitalist society .Bibliography:(1)Thomas Hardy. Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The Reasons for Tess’s TragicThomas Hardy was a famous critical realistic writer at the turn of the 19th century in England; Tess of the D’Urbervilles is the most influential one of all his works. This novel describes a tragic life about one beautiful and pure girl after disgrace. Tess’s tragic life is caused by that society and it’s the result of that time. Except this, it can’t be separated from her own weakness in character, because she obviously has the dual nature of the society character---resistance and compromise. As a common person, Tess fought with the society helplessly. In the end, she turned out to be the sacrificial victim of society like all other things which disobey the morality and ethic. The reasons we discussed are divided into two aspects, the inner reason and the outer reasons including the family reason, the social background and the hypocritical religion.A: the outer reason⑴.Family ReasonAt the beginning of the novel, it depicts a scene that will change the fate of Tess in the future. The father of Tess was a lazy and foolish peddler. As a man, instead of bearing the burden of family, he was a drunkard and looked unfit. In the upheaval of society, in place of facing the reality bravely, he was engrossed in a fancy that he was the descendant of good blood. Tess’s mother was a milker at first. Later, she could only earn a little money by washing clothes for others. But she was in a state of unemployment in later time. She was vulgar, superficial and simpleminded. As the oldest child of the family, Tess had to help to support the family. After leaving school, Tess earned money by working. Tess’s father heard the news that they were the descendants of a knight family-- the D’urbervilles. He was too pleased to continu e his work as usual. Instead, he drunk more. As a result, Tess had no choice but to go to the market on the behalf of her father. Unfortunately, on the way, there was an accident in which the horse --Prince died. Prince was the only means of production that they can rely on. The death of Prince worsened the family’s poverty. Thus, Tess accepted her mother’s suggestion that they should get contact with their relatives—the D’urbervilles. Before leaving, the mother dressed her up. Both the father and the mother knew what it meant for Tess. But Tess was only seventeen then , she couldn’t predict what would happen. Her parents wanted to change the poor condition of the family if Tess could marry with a rich man. Their foolishness deprived their daughter of her happiness. As the words in the novel"…when Tess was hurt, no one could protect her, even the God had slept…″There was no doubt that the poor condition of the family was the direct and the most begging reason. If not for their poverty ,Tess would not go to the market in the night; if not for their poverty ,Tess’s parents would not compelled Tess to recogniz e relative relation with the D’urbervilles and she would not be raped by Alec; if not for their poverty, Tess would not had received so much humiliation before the returning to her husband-- Angel Clare. In conclusion, the family’s heavy burden , the father’s laziness and addiction to the alcohol, the mother’s unemployment, vulgarity and simple-mindedness ,all these led to Tess’s tragic life.⑵. Social BackgroundFamily is the smallest unit of society. The upheaval of society unavoidably bring about changes to family. Tess lived in a changing time when England was shifting from agricultural economy to machine production. To some degree, Tess’s life of tragedy was historical inevitability. The death of Prince made the family lose their last base of economy. Tess’s family had to get involved in the proletarian. Out of willing, Tess had no choice but to get contact with the capitalist Alec D’urber villes to work for them so as to tackle the poor condition of the family. This was Tess’s first step in becoming a proletarian. From this time on, her life became the life of a proletarian from pastoral life. And she became an agricultural worker earning money by selling her labor. During this time, Tess was ravished by Alec and gave birth to a child who died in infancy. The people in her countryside could not accept that kind of thing and scorn off Tess. They thought that Tess set a bad example for their children. The countrymen even exiled them after the death of Tess’s father. When Tess fed her child, she kept a far distance from other farmers in the field. When Tess asked a clergyman to baptize for her son, the clergyman didn’t agree because her son was illegal. All of those showed people’s hypocrisy. Alec was another example. His actions of helping Tess’s family, teaching Tess to learn whistle, etc, w ere based on the desire of the possession of Tess .All Alec’s pretending kindness was not out of true love, but out of Tess’s beauty and his sexual desire. Moreover, Alec was not ashamed of his badness even though he clearly knew the fact. It revealed the capital ists’ hypocrisy and pseudo(假的,不诚实的) morality. The society of that time was not just. It was a society of hegemony(领导权,霸权) father right. There was a thought that girls’ first time of sex was the privilege of her husband. On the wedding night , Tess confessed to Angel her seduction by Alec. Though Angel had done the same thing with a woman in France, on hearing her wife’s tale, his old fashioned prejudices overcame him and he abandoned Tess.In conclusion, t he break of agricultural economy, the deprivation of farmers’ land and means of production and the hegemony father right in men’s heart in such a changing age,all these caused Tess‘s tragic life. As the representative of the farmers , Tess’s tragic life was constructed in the development of society. All in all, Tess was the sacrificial victim of the society.(3) hypocritical religionTess of the D’Urbervilles is a rebel to the hypocritical morality of Christianity. When she faced the extreme poverty, social discrimination after being ravished by Alec and the abandonment of her husband, she chose to endure and struggle. The series of accidental events and warnings still step by step drove her to the abyss of destruction. Tess is executed at the end of the novel. Just as what Aeschylean says “Justice” was done, and the President of the Immortals had ended his sport with Tess. The master of the gods in the novel refers to the god, which expressed the Hardy’s sarcasm and discontent to the unfair god. Some ideas of Tess's husband--Angel represents those of Hardy’s in some respects. His religious beliefs reflected the changes and progress of that time. However, he was not completely free from the restrictions of the Christian traditional thoughts. When Tess confessed her past experience to him on the night of their wedding, he refused to give his forgiveness and abandoned her mercilessly. He believed in what he was taught in his childhood and still a slave of traditional and outdated opinions. What full of his mind was rigid principles of Christian traditional ethics. Here Hardy pointed out the limitations of Angle’s thoughts and at the same time expressed his irony of old Christian morality.B. the inner reason--Characters Analysis of TessIn one novel, people’s character also takes a very important part. In this novel, though the writer us ed the environment to describe Tess’s tragic fate, the other reason which caused this result is her own character.Tess was a daughter of a poor peasant. Her character concentrated on human nature’s brave benevolence. Tess’s beauty and temperament were harmony with the nature. She was “the nature’s daughter”, a little bird in a cage could make her cry. Tess’s ow n character decided that she had no ability to protect herself, and the efforts that required were in excess of her endurance. The tragedy of her fate set the tone early, and the tragedy’s happening was the problem of the time. Tess experienced major changes in human relationships. She obviously had the dual nature of the social character---- resistance and compromise. Treating with the bad young man –Alec, Tess revolted constantly. Although she became a disgraced woman, she always held an inviolable attitude to Alec. She silently endured the unfair in her life. Although life only gave her attack and disaster, she could tenaciously endure and undertake and never set the excessive request to the life. The second time when Tess met Alec, her lives were in the most difficult of her times. Facing every enticement of Alec, her basic remained unmoved. Tess was not willing to compromise. Then the disaster arrived, Tess’s father died and her family was expelled the village. Tess entrusted the body once again in Alec just because her mother and little brothers and sisters could then have a place to live, but anti-makes in light of this had not ended, submitting was only temporary. In the end, she killed Alec with a knife. This was an inevitable result of her innermost feeling revolt. Tess had the ending of violent resistance to evil. The other side of Tess’s social charact er was resigned to bad conditions. Tess adopted completely another kind of manner to treat Clare. The relationship between lovers should be equal, but Tess constantly disparaged herself and raised Clare. “She loves him extremely, she looks him as the god.” In front of love, Tess had lost herself, lost the dignity. This kind of blind, unequal love made Tess lose the happy right as a wife and deepened her tragedy. Tess wrote a confession letter to Clare before their marriage, and then told her “crime” to him, but Clare was the defender of traditional moral principles, his “new mind” demanded that Tess give forgiveness and tolerance for his profligate behavior in the past and Tess did, but the tragic past of Tess, actually could not obtain Clare’s forgiveness. Tess did not revolt slightly when facing Clare’s heartless abandonment. Oppositely, she said:” I am certainly like a low pitiful slave of yours, absolutely obey you, if you ask me not to be able to fall to the ground, suicide killed, and I do not violate you.” Clare cruel-heartedly left her but Tess never reduced her love to Clare. From what has been discussed above, we learned that the reasons for Tess’s tragic life are various. We can also know that one of the important reason of the novel’s success lies that it created a moving tragic character—Tess. Because of the subjective or objective facts , she made some kind of mistakes which led to the tragic results. She is a good person but not a perfect one. She has a pitiful and even admirable quality and personality, but she has the mortal unavoidable weaknesses and flaws. Her way of life, thoughts , feelings and tragic ending can reflect the reality of that times, which resonates us.。

苔丝英文读后感Why was Tess’s girlish purity lost? Why did such a beautiful, noble and pure woman as Tess should suffer inevitable ruin? Why does the wrong man take the wrong woman? Why it is always the woman who pays? Why they are always hurt? Why is beauty damaged by ugliness? Why the tragedy is happened more than one hundred years ago repeated in modern times? Is everything too late?Recently I’ve read the British famous writer Thomas Hardy’s masterpiece-Tess of the D’urbervilles. It describes the misfortune of a poor peasant girl Tess. In this novel, we can see Tess resist her unjust fate again and again, till to be ruined. With the development of the plot we find that her tragedy is inevitable. We can not but feel the intense emotions of pity and fear. The cause of Tess’s tragedy has always been the concern of people, such a beautiful, noble and pure woman as Tess should suffer inevitable ruin. What leads to her tragic destiny? Who killed her? I can’t do very well in analysis the novel. I don’t know clearly how the time she lived in affect her life. I do have an understanding of the novel by myself. Alec and Angel who are the two people very closely related to Tess’s fate. I think fierce Alec played a very important role in killing Tess, but in fact, it was hypocritical Angel who killed Tess indirectly but more cruelly.I wanted to cry, Tess, do not follow him when I read that plot. I hope she met her true love before she was seduced, but everything was too late. She was seduced by a so called gentleman-Alec, and from then on her life totally changed from this loss of innocence. people looked down on her andrespect her no more. Actually she did nothing wrong because before she was seduced she knew nothing of man. Women were too weak. Tess was poor, weak and helpless and met the wrong person at the wrong time.I strongly believed that it was Angel who killed Tess cruelly and without mercy. Angel was a liberal bourgeoisie. He made himself lived in the countryside rather than serving the god. Angel was a man who questioned the church’s teaching. He thought the church’s views were too strict and did not allow free thinking. Angel extricated him from religion and his family, but he couldn’t break with traditional moral principles. He wanted a wife who was the daughter of nature, honest, sensitive, intelligent, graceful, pure as snow and extremely beautiful. In the first part I thought Angel loved tess very much. In the following part I found that he loved an image he imagined. After their wedding Angel confessed the crime he committed to a woman long time ago and asked Tess’s forgiveness. Tess was not at all angry and forgave angel at once. She innocently thought that the thing she was going to confess would be forgiven. poor Tess! She sat and told everything to angel, hoping he would forgive her as he was forgiven, but she was wrong. The woman pays.Angel claimed that you were one person, now you are another when tess asked why. The woman Angel had loved was not tess, was another woman in tess’s shape. Angel loved the person he imagined. He considered tess the daughter of nature. Compared to tess’s words, “ I thought angel, that you loved me-me my very self! If you do love me, how can you treat me like this? It frightened me! Having begun to love you, I will love you forever, in all changes, in all troubles, because you are yourself. I ask no more.”we know how deep tess loved angel. She would have laid down life for angel. She not only loved the merits but also accept the demerits. We know from the book that when angel came back from Brazil, he could hardly be recognizedby his mother because the cruel climate and hard work had aged him by twenty years, but tess accepted angel immediately, because he was the man she fell in love with.I don’t know why angel couldn’t forgive tess since he himself had done the similar thing.苔丝英文读后感in tess of the d’urbervilles, hardy molded a pure, kindhearted image and rather an image brave enough to rebel, to shoulder the responsibility of her action. her unfortuneness was the tragedy of the society, her character and fate. it vividly revealed the persecution towards people after industrial revolution made by the conception of capitalism and traditional moral. following are some of my opinions about the causes to her death.her character and parentage was part of the causein the author’s ideal world, tess was the embodiment of beauty and the incarnation of love .she represents all the merits of the villagers in her hometown: beautiful, pure, kind, simple, charitable and tolerant. to love ,she had no egocentric thoughts and didn’t plan to meet her vain wish by marriage .she standed by he dignity and pursue freedom .hardy made the poor, helpless ,humble country girl as the heroin.despite she committed adultery and murder, hardy still claim she was a “pure girl”. this fully showed the author’s sympathy towards tess. hardy elaborately modeled the image of tess and indignantly describes the depression confronted with tess through her short life.tess is a young woman who tends to find herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. she is a victim, but she is also, at times, irresponsible. she falls asleep while taking the beehives to market, which ends up killing the family horse, prince she decides to visit the d’urbervilles intrantridge, giving rise to all her future woes, partly out of the guilt and responsibility she feels toward her family. she wants to make good, but in trying to help her family she loses sight of her own safety and her own wants and wishes. she becomes alec’s victim in the forest. she probably should have known not to put herself in such a situation, but she has few other options. here, it seems as though she is destined to rely on others, even when they are unreliable.tess is also a strong woman throughout the novel. she stands up for herself and refuses to crumble under pressure. she chastises herself for her weakness after her sexual escapade with alec. if we agree with her claim that this indiscretion is a moment of weakness, we probably also feel that such weakness is not unlike that of most human beings. she is hard on herself for letting herself become a victim. at the burial of her child, sorrow , she weeps but collects herself and moves on as a stronger woman. overall, her determined attempts to escape her past primarily reflect her strength.her parentage to some extent leaded to her final tragedy. born in a poor family, with an ignorant vain, drunkard father who did not care too much about the苔丝英文读后感The Woman paysTESS is really a tragic figure in the book TESS of the d’Urberwilles. She was seduced by a so-called gentleman—Alec, and from then on her life totally changed from this loss of innocence. people looked down on her and respected her no more. Actually she did nothing wrong because before she was seduced she knew nothing of men. She was just a girl when she first met that terrible man.She was forced by the gossips and the church to blame herself for this accident, so she thought she deserved nothing good. In order to get ridof the past she decided to go to a distant dairy farm but was still saying to herself that she was wrong. Maybe God didn’t agree with that, because the Lord gave her someone she loved with her whole heart and life—Angel Chare. Angel popped the question to her but she refused him without saying why. She said she loved him deeply and perhaps no one in the world could love him more than she did but she could not marry him for some unspoken reason. Angel wasn’t satisfied with this vague answer and did his best to win Tess. Somehow she agreed and they soon fixed the wedding day. If you asked one if he was the oldest in his family, he would probably answer “the oldest one” even if he had some elder sisters. If you asked why then he would say, “Ha, they are not included!”people gave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep the family name going. They thought girls had no use for the family. They would be married and go to live with their husbands’ home and be their wives some day sooner or later. So they were extremely hard on girls.Girls should be hard working, faithful, loyal, intelligent, and virtuous and the most important thing was she must be a maiden! If her husband was the first man who touched her then she was a good girl, a good wife no matter how she thought. If she wasn’t, then she would gain a very bad reputation and nobody would dare to go near her. Nowadays women’s situations have become much better. Some are because of the change of society and some are because of civilization. Just let those poor painful women like TESS be just a memory.苔丝英文读后感About Thomas HardyThomas Hardy (1840---1928), who is an English novelist. His father is a stoneworker, who is fond of music. His parents thought much of the education of their son. He grown up in the Dorset shire, so the environment of there became the main backdrop of his writings. His writings often reflecting the change after capitalism intrude the countries in England and the people’s hard life.At first, Hardy wrote some novels, and in his old age, he worked on poets. The novel was published in the year 1891. Thomas Hardy facing the terror of the war and propagating the love-kindness, he is one of the greatest English writers. The summary of the bookAs is known to all, is the most famous novel of Thomas Hardy. Tess comes from a farmer’s family, the Durbeyfields. One day her father, John Durbeyfied learns that they are descended from the D’Urbervilles, an ancient family. Her mother urges Tess to claim kinship with the remaining D’Urbervilles, so that Tess could marry a gentleman. Unwillingly, the girl comes in contact with the Stoke, D’Urbervilles. There she meets Alec D’Urbervilles. Having received a job of tending to chickens, Tess stays in the D’Urbervilles. Before long the rich but guileful Alec manages to seduce the girl and make her pregnant. Being humiliated and resolute, Tess returns home, and gives birth to the child, who is called Sorrow but dies soon . Without financial support, Tess has to leave home and goes to work at a distant farm, where she meets Angel Claire. After Angel persistent pursuit of Tess, the two fall in love. In the wedding night, Tess admits about Alec D’Urbervilles and the child. She begs for forgiveness, but Angel leaves her in disgust. Tess again returns home alone, only find that her familyremains impoverished and she even has no place to stay. In the meantime, Alec D’Urbervilles appears again. He promises to support her family, only as a means to make Tess dependent. At the end of hope, the girl jumps into the trap of the shameless man. However, Angel Claire, who is remorseful for his mercilessness comes back, which makes Tess even more desperate. After Angel leaves, she kills Alec. Then she follows Angel and escape with him. They manage to hide for a while in a wood before she is arrested. She is hanged later. In this story, the dramatis persona Tess is a beautiful, virtuous country girl. Angel Claire loves Tess, but his love is selfish, he can’t forgive her wife’s mistake, he forsakes her .Alec D’Urbervilles is an evil person, he makes Tess’s life being a tragedy. The commentThis is a dolorous book. This is a story of love.Tess, the poor girl as innocent as the sleeping birds in the trees, or the small field animals in the hedges, her life destroyed by her relatives, lover and some other people. They say they love her, but they like themselves most. Her parents want her married Alec only because they want her doing some good for the family. Alec wants to possess her, because she is the most beautiful girl in the village. He makes her pregnant but can’t give her his love. Angle is tess’s true love, but his love also not consummate, he can’t forgive tess’s mistake, although he had did wrong with a women. Why only the women had to pay? I thought of this problem for a long time. In the 19th England, women had not status, they live very hard because people’s prejudice. Tess is the victim under the not fair environment, she lives with force, and even the law thinks the insults are allowable! At the end of the book, Fortune's wheel bereaves the last thing she had—her life. How to vindicate the women’s right? Expect change the people’s prejudice women must learn to be adamancy and independent. We must know how to take care of ourselves. We must have the ability to feed ourselves, so that we can win the independent of personality and life. And so that we can have a pure au pair love. The word “woman” doesn’t means “puny”!苔丝英文读后感She was seduced by a so-called gentleman—Alec, and from then on her life totally changed from this loss of innocence. people looked down on her and respected her no more. His birthplace was in a country which named Egdon in the Westland; this natural environment formed the main environment in the Hardy‘s writes. His father was a stonecutter, but like music. His parents paid more attention on Hardy‘s education. In his childhood, he received the education for theology but when he grew up, he turned to learn the literature. Hardy left school became an architect apprentice in 1856. And then he went to London and became a post of the building draftsman in 1862, also in this time he took advanced courses for language in London University and began literature creation. His literature career began with poetry. His first long novel was published in 1871, the celebrated work was his fourth novel Farm from Madding Crowd in the 1874. From then on and he dropped construction industry and devoted to the novel creation. From the late nineteen century, Thomas Hardy and his works have always been the important topics of the criticism for a long time. After the Second World War, with the development of modern literary criticism, different critics interpret Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Thomas Hardy‘s other novels from various perspectives. For instance, Professor Webster begins wit h a discussion of Hardy‘s intentions in writing Tess. According to his views, Tess of the D’Urbervilles is a contribution to Hardy‘s war against man‘s inhumanit y, While Amold Kettle takes a different point of view. For him, the subject of Tess of the D’Urb ervilles is not the tragedy of a ―pure woman‖ but rather the destruction of the English peasantry. Mr. Kettle considers it as a complete as a social novel.Tess of D’Urbervilles describes a tragic life about one beautiful and pure girl after disgrace. Tess was a poor peasant girl. At the beginning of the works we know Tess replaces her father to take the load of beehives herself to the retailers in Casterbridge for the Saturday market. On the way, a mail cart runs into her wagon and kills the horse. The encounter gets her family into the trap. For the benefit to her family, Tess tries to struggle with the bitter fate,Feeling guilty of indulgence in the outside pleasure without helping her mother. After May-Day dance, Tess hurries home to deal with the homework. Though Tess does things for her family and makes sacrifices. She still can‘t escape the tie of fate. Sent by her mother to claim kindred with a more prosperous branch of the D‘Urbervilles family, she was seduced by the young master of the house, Alec and had to return home in disgrace. After giving birth to a child who died in infancy, she went to work as wage-laborer at a daisy farm Talbothays. There she met Angel Clare, a son of clergyman and he felled in love with her and married her.On the wedding night, Tess and Clare told each other about their pasts, and Clare, after hearing Tess‘s confession left her abruptly for Brazil. Poverty forced Tess to seek for work for a long time at a capitalist farm at Flint comb-Ash where she was insulted and oppressed by the master. Then the news of her father‘s death and the expulsion of her family from their cottage drive her to seek for assistance from Alec, and the latter, now a preacher, soon resumes his former illicit relation with her. In the end, when Clare finally came to tell her that he had forgiven her and he still loved her. Tess was bitterly unhappy. She hated Alec because one again he had been the cause of her husband‘s reputation of her, Feeling that she played a most inglorious part and she would be happy if Alec was dead, in addition, Alec said many bad words to satirize her. She stabbed him as he slept. Then she ran out of the houses and followed Angel. They had a few happy days together. Living with the husband she truly loved, she was ready for her punishment. In this novel, we can see that Tess resisted her unjust fate again and again, yet still to be destroyed. We cannot help but feel the intense emotions of pity and fear. At the same time we deeply feel that her tragedy is inevitable. The cause of her tragedy has always been the concern of the Victoria times, such a beautiful, noble and pure woman as Tess should suffer inevitable ruin. What leads to her tragic destiny? What killed her? In the paper, I try to show the various causes of Tess‘s tra gedy on the base of some early researches and to prove the inevitability of Tess‘s tragedy.2 Analysis of the Character Causes of T ess’s T ragedyThis story describes the miserable experience of a rural girl. But too unfortunate to overthrow this girl who calls Tess, she relies on her own hands to work, moving people with her own sincerity. She is ―a pure woman‖. Finally she winds up with the tragedy, which is why people often discuss her as the source of the tragedy. She was fighting against the society, the hypocritical religion. She has shown in front of common people her own practical action that she is insulted, which indicates a resisting powerful woman‘s images.2.1 Analysis of Self-factor in T ess’s TragedyTess‘s tragedy not only results from t he external causes but also from the internal ones. And only through the internal causes, the external causes become operative. The tragedy that results from the conflict between man and her self is the tragedy of character. Tess‘s tragedy is the tragedy of character. On one hand, Tess struggles bravely against her destiny and the conventional morality. She desires for happiness and true love. On the other hand, she cannot completely get rid of social conventions and moral standards of the day, which makes her believe that she has to pay for what she has sinned. She yields to the arrangement of the fate (Ackerman, 1996: 49). The latter is the weakness in her character. When Tess falls in love with angel Clare, she still cannot get rid of her sense of guilt. ―Her love for him acts to blot out the memories of the past in her, but she is always aware that her forgetfulness is only temporary, that the doubts, fears, and shame were only waiting like wolves just outside the light. One night, when the two of them were sitting indoor, she suddenly exclaims that she is not worthy of him.‖ (Hardy, 1993: 189) After their wedding ceremony, Tess is sad by the time they come back to the farm. She is tortured by guilt. She asks herself, if she has any right to be Mrs. Angel C lare. Tess‘s deep sense of guilt makes her submit to Angel‘s maltreatment without resistance, thinking she deserves it. Undoubtedly, this kind of character helps to make external causes operative (Xu, 2007: 80).This is the first point about her character. The second is her purity which can be reflected in two aspects.First, there is not any trace of vanity in her behavior. Although her parents are benighted and her family is poor, Tess still keeps the working people‘s virtue. She detects her parent‘commonplace words and deeds, despises noble origin and considers herself the daughter of villager, she says:“Pooh-I have much of mother as father in! All my prettiness comes and I was only a dairymaid .‖ (Chapter , 103)The second aspect is Tess‘s honesty. Al though she is seduced by Alec, she is not willing to become his plaything and leaves him resolutely. When Alec lures her with money, Tess is describe like that:Her lips lifted slightly, though there was little scorn as a rule in her large and impulsive na ture. ―I have said I will not take anything more from you, and I will not-I can not! I should be your creature to go on doing that: and I won‘t!‖ (chapter12. 78)Although in the bourgeois society, the moral standard for man and woman is very different; Tes s‘s faithful love to Angel and her honesty still make her confess her relation with Alec to Angel:“Tess, say it is not true? No, it is not true!‖“It‘s true..“Every word ?‖“Every word‖(chapter36, 239)In the novel, Tess is portrayed as a brave girl, hard –working and sweet- natured and innocent, yet she is free from the influence of social conventions and moral standards of the day. Her purity obviously is not welcomed by the bourgeois society.2.1.1 Analysis of Tess’s FamilyTess is the daughter of a very poor villager. Her parents are very benighted. When her father finds he is the descendent of an ancient aristocratic family, D‘Urbervilles, he is immensely proud of himself although there is nothing valuable left in his hand. He even goes to hotel and drinks very much until Tess and her mother come to look for him. When Tess and her mother support his arms to go back home, there is such description:On reaching the fresh air he was sufficiently unsteady to incline the row if three at one moment as if they were marching to London and at another as if they were marching to Bath-with produced a comical effect, frequent enough in families on nocturnal home goings;and, like most comical effects, not quite so comic after all. The two women valiantly disguised there forced excursions and countermarches as well as they could from themselves: and so they approached by degrees their own door the head of the family bursting suddenly into his former refrain as he drew near; as if to fortify his soul at sight of the smallness of his present residence: (Liu, 2007: 103)“I‘ve got a family vault at Kings beer!‖ (chapter4,23)“Hush-don‘t be so silly, Jack,‖ Said his wife, ―Yours is not the only family that was of count in world days. Look at the Anktells, and Horseys, and the Thringhams themselves gone to seed almost as much as you-though you was bigger folks than they, that‘s true. Thank God, I was never of no family, and have nothing to be ashamed of in that way!‖“Don‘t you be so sure of that. From your father ‗tis my belief you‘ve disgraced yourselves more than any of us, and week kings and queens outright at one time.‖Tess turned the subject by saying what was far more prominent in her own mind at the moment than thoughts of her ancestry-“I‘m afraid father won‘t be a ble to take the journey with the beehives tomorrow so early.‖“I? I shall be all right in an hour or two.‖ said Durbeyfield (chapter4, 24).From their conversation and the description of Durbeyfield‘s drunkenness, we can see the foolishness of Tess‘s paren ts, and of course, which is mainly caused by poverty. The author Hardy takes some very humorous words to describe their bitterness caused by poverty. All these young souls were passengers in the Durbeyfield ship-entirely dependent on the judgment of the Durbeyfield adults for their pleasures, their necessities, their health, their existence. If the heads of the Durbeyfield‘s household chose to sail into difficulty, disaster, starvation, disease, degradation, death, thither were these half dozen little captives under hatches compelled to sail with them-six helpless creatures who had never been asked if they wished for life on any terms, much less if they wished for it on such hard conditions as were involved being of the shiftless house of Durbeyfield (Chapter3, 18)Under the great poverty, Tess‘s parents become more and more apathetic and vulgar. When they have a more prosperous relative, what they have in mind is to ask Tess to claim kindred with Alec. Tess isn‘t willing to go, but she has no idea about her family‘s poverty. Onthe day when she is going to visit Alec there‘s such a conversation in her family; Her mother expostulated, ―Y ou will never set out to; see your folks without dressing up more than dand that?‖ (chapter7,44)“But, I am going to work!‖ s aid Tess.“Well, yes,‖ said Mrs. Durbeyfield, and in a private tone, ―at first there mid be a little pretence, but I think it will be wiser of‘ee to put your best side outward,‖ she added.“V ery well; I suppose you know best,‖ replied Tess with calm abando nment. And to please her parents the girl put herself quite in Joan hands, saying serenely ―Do what you like with me, mother.‖ (chapter7, 44)Along these lines, we can see a very apathetic father and a vulgar mother, and also a pure girl who is weak and in competent. Why Tess‘s family, but also in many families, especially peasants. Her family, started early in the story broken broken up by six or seven years ago. As writers and issued by emotion in the book as ―Norman‘s blood, not Victoria-dynasty‘s wealth as an aid, and what of it!‖ dignitaries of origin did not bring any benefits to Tess, her tragedy is Thus began. They are farmers and the general difficulties of life Bitter. Her father is a lazy hearts softened, and he not only own, ignoring the others, and too alcoholic. Her mother is just a superficial of the laity, not so much a mother as she said she is a bog boy. However, the parents of these two incompetent but has seven children. Therefore, the heavy burden of the family will keep pressure on the shoulders of Tess. Tess is so in love with her sisters and brothers that she could not bear to see them live in destitution among. As a result, her has been decided that-sooner or later tragedy, but it may be in a different way. In order to show off their so-called ―elite‖status and to meet the humble vanity, delusion by Tess‘s parents, ―claiming kin,‖―marriage‖approach to enhance their own status. Although Tess hate the hypocrisy of their parents, despised noble origin, insisting that they are women and farmers. She is to live on their own work, but she is the boss at home, Her parents can make a heavy family burden without premature drop on shoulder. Tess reluctantly ordered the mother to comply with the counterfeit money to defect to his family. Vices o f the victim and the ritual became a sinner. Later ,she uprooted from their homes for their families, everywhere scoop Park, suffered a lot, when in the dead end. Or for the family, go back to Alec side.2.1.2 Analysis of Tess’s ResistanceTreat with the bad young man Alec. Tess revolts constantly. Although she became a disgrace woman, she always holds an inviolable attitude to Alec. She dropped originally may enjoy easy and comfortable life, fostered the child lonely. Periphery discriminates the judgment has not certainly frightened her; she silently endured the unfair in the life. Although life gave her only attack and disaster, she all can tenaciously endure and undertake and never set the excessive request to the life. The second time Tess meet Alec just her lives in the most difficult time. Faced every enticement of Alec, she basic remains unmoved, Tess was not willing to compromise. However, disaster arrived. Tess‘s father died and her family was expelled from the village. Tess entrusted the body once again to Alec in order to get her mother and little brother and sisters a place to live, but anti-makes in light of this had not ended, submits is only temporary. In the end, when Clare finally came to tell her that he had forgiven her and he still loved her. Tess was bitterly unhappy. She now hated Alec because once again he had been the cause of her husband‘s repudiation of her. Feeling that she played a most inglorious part and she would be happy if Alec was dead, in addition, Alec said many bad words to satirize her. She used a knife killed Alec; this is inevitable result of her innermost feelings revolt. Tess had the ending of violent resistance to evil just her character to a higher level.2.1.3 Analysis of Tess’s CompromiseThe other side of Tess‘s social character is resigned to bad conditions. Tess adopts completely another kind of manner to treat Clare. The relationship between lovers should be equal, but Tess constantly disparages herself and raises Clare. At the beginning of love ―she loves he e xtremely, she looks he as the god.‖ (Thomas Hard, 261)“To her sublime trustfulness he was all that goodness could be – knew all that a guide, philosopher, and friend should know. She thought every line in the contour of his person the perfection of mascul ine beauty, his soul the soul of a saint, his intellect that of a seer……The compassion of his love for her, as she saw it, made her lift up her heart to him in devotion.‖ (Thomas Hardy, 276)This is a love which how strong is blazing actually acts sterilely. In front of love, Tesshas lost herself, has lost the dignity. Just this kind of blind, unequal love make Tess dropped the happy right as a wife, deepened her tragedy.Tess write a confession letter to Clare before married, and then tell her ―crime‖, bu t Clare is the traditional morals defender of traditional moral principles, his ―new mind‖ demand Tess gives forgiveness and tolerant for his profligate behavior in the past. Tess has done, but the tragic past of Tess, actually cannot obtain Clare repays-like the intolerance. Tess has not done revolts slightly face Clare heartless abandonment. Oppositely, she said: ―I certainly like a low pitiful slave of yours, absolute obeys you. If you ask me not to be able to fall to the ground, suicide killed, and I do not violate you.‖ (Thomas Hardy,352) Clare cruel-heartedly leaves; Tess never reduces her love to Clare. A passionate letter actually cannot call Clare‘s ice-cold heart. In the end, when Clare finally came to her that he had forgiven her and he still loved her. Tess was bitterly unhappy. She now hated Alec because once again he had been the cause of her husband‘s repudiation of her.2.2 Analysis of Alec and Clare’s Character Causes of T ess’s TragedyIn this novel to male leading character‘s description ha s reflected at that time the capitalist society darkness and false capitalism morals view. People‘s character also takes a very important part. In this novel, the writer though the environment to describe Tess‘s tragic fate, but the other reasons caused th is result is people‘s character, Alec and Clare are very closely to Tess fate.2.2.1 Analysis of Alec’s CharacterAlec is the emerging bourgeoisie‘s representatives; he is representing the bourgeois society‘s authority, the wealth and the evil, Tess‘s tra gic life reason to him. His father is a rich merchant, but after crown by aristocrat D‘Urbervilles surname. This young man lay on his father‘s money and power dominates the native place. When he meets Tess, the dissolute lascivious countenance is completely unmasked; he supposes the snare that destroyed young girl‘s pure and chaste and the life happiness. Harmed others to benefit him, resorts to all means to satisfy own absurd fleshly desires, and not only displayed the countryside landlord class‘s essentia l characteristic, but also manifested the property realistic characteristic.Although afterwards he changed in old pastor Clare help next evilly reforms, however, several dozens years abuse eradicates by no means. When he meets Tess‘s family is in has no h ome. It can be said, Tess‘s life is the might and the violence victim which the Alec thunder represents.2.2.2 Analysis of Clare’s CharacterIf someone says Alec representative‘s evil force is the direct reason to cause Tess‘s tragedy, then the traditional ethics morality survives on Angel Clare devastates to Tess is one kind invisible, the more fearful spirit injures. Angel Clare is a complex artistic image. On his body, not only has the certain enlightened thought, but also is retaining the traditional moral prejudice. Although he born in a pastor family, not willing to be a pastor ―serves for God‖, he is willing to work at farming, ―serves for the metropolis lively life, he wants to go the country to do the arduous physical labor as those farmers, tries hard to grasp each kind of class the agricultural technology. In nature bosom, he feels the village life is simple and in the love question, he mild-mannered and cultivate, serious and earnest, pay more attention on emotion, all of these are different with Alec. This explanations he was the Bourgeois intellectuals who has the free thought at that time, but he departs from to this social class also is extremely limited, He will be engaged in the agricultural production the goal is for later to be a large landed estate. He not only as soon as starts to recognize Tess could be a good steward in the future, the most important is he love Tess not like her to love his such selfless and sincere. In his eyes, Tess is ―nature ‗s new born daughter‖, however, once she confessed the insult to him which receive, then on his body preserves the inherent morals have strangled in his heart the real sentiment. Although he also have had the profligate behavior, and obtained Tess ‗s forgiving, but actually is not willing to for give originally innocent Tess. This indicated his heart‘s core traditional morals ethics idea ingrained , he regards a woman from traditional chastity view to be chaste or not, this has given Tess by devastating attack. If we say because the Alec thunder ferocious adversary caused the desire and the future hope of her live. Then, Clare to her abandonment, said in some kind of degree, then has destroyed her spiritual prop (because Tess really loves him). Thus, his return caused her to feel the humiliation which own received, thus caused its pain, the lamentation; to despair has achievedthe apex. Her finally killed Alec, not only must prove own helpless, simultaneously also are must to the person which loves prove own innocent. From this, I may say that, is pr ecisely by Alec representative‘s evil force and Clare himself preserves the traditional ethics morality, together pushed Tess to the tragic abyss.3Analysis of the Social and Environmental Causes inTess’s TragedyIn this novel, Hardy emphasizes the real istic cause of Tess‘s tragedy, including the disintergration of English peasantry and the hypocritical morality of bourgeois society. Throughout the novel, we get the impression that the tragedy of Tess is made by the imposed fate, including the hypocritical morality of that time, rather than Fate and Chance. Tess cannot escape her tragic fate unless she escapes from the society. In fact, Tess‘s tragedy is shared by most of the poor peasants.3.1 Hypocritical Capitalism Moral View and Unequal Legal SystemTess was lived in the Victorian era when capitalism invaded the rural England. She was a hardworking, kind-hearted, intelligent and beautiful girl; but regarded as a laborer, a man of poor agricultural workers, she has low social status that naturally will received oppression and humiliation in the capitalist society. By analyzing this novel we can know that in Victoria time, Tess‘s tragedy was due to social morals root. In the capitalist society, legal regime and moral outlook all maintains the exploiting class oppresses people‘s authority as the township, did all kinds of evil things, but they was protected by the law. Tess actually is condemned the death penalty. This just was explaining bourgeoisie politics system reactionary and indicated the unimportant persons in the lower level social class were impossible to obtain the fair treatment in the society. We may see in the novel, such as Alec this thunder actually receives the bourgeoisie state apparatus and the religious morals protection.3.2 Impoverishment and Decay of Small FarmersThis story has happened in the southern countries of England. Small famer‘s impoverishment and the decay which the writer really describes these which to be hired the farmers and seeks the work. These laborers are mercilessly exploited by the rich landowners.Let us see the economic crisis took place in bourgeois world and led to the social change. The change made many peasants lose their lands and became peasant workers. Large quantities of peasant were bankrupt. It is the s ame with the D‘Urbervilles. Their narrow minds and stupidity make them puzzled. The society is so cruel that it does not give them a chance to live and makes them discard their children. Tests was born into the family of a poor rural tradesman. Her father drinks a lot and doesn‘t work hard. Her mother herself is like a child and never thinks about the future. There are many children in their family. Her mother sends her to claim kin with a distant relative of noble D‘Urbervilles family in the hope of her fa mily was worse, that means the bankrupt of the family. Her disjoint from the country leads to her later tragedy; the young master Alec seduces her and the following pregnancy compels Tess to return home in dis grace. Her tragic life was begun.3.3 The Male F actor in T ess’s TragedyThis section mainly refers to Alec and Angel.Alec is an upstart on behalf of the bourgeoisie, a typical playboy. His image is a symbol of Western civilization hiding under the cloak of barbaric cruelty of sex desire. He also bel ieves that the beauty of Tess is negative, because a woman‘s beauty is the bait to lure men‘s desire. From his view of male point, this seems to imply that his possession of Tess is due to the temptation of her beauty. The first time that Tess went to claim kindred is very reluctant to Tess. With the feelings of shyness and shame, Tess went to D‘Urbervilles and starts her acquaintance with Alec. Later Alec threatened to Tess in every possible way, but Tess would prefer to remain in the poor cave, to endure the cruel exploitation and oppressed, to bear the heavy manual work overload, but unwilling to yield to Alec, or accepts his help. However, her father dies, her mother is ill, her brothers and sisters are out of school, their house lease is expired, the fa mily have no place to shelter. For the whole family‘s life, Tess had to refer to Alec, becomes his mistress and accepts his help (Jiang, 2007:96). Since then, she completely ruined her happiness of life. The whole life of Tess is the victim of Alec‘s power and violence. As to Angel, he is the incarnation of traditional ethical concepts. Angel and Alec are completely different. He is an intellectual and has liberal thinking; He despises class prejudice and hierarchy; He dislikes bustling city life and is longing to the countryside farming; He is。

Tess’s tragedy can be illustrated by three factors--Hardy’s fatalism, socia l reasons and the reasons of herself which included the relationship between Tess and Alec and Clare, her family and the weakness of her character. There is also some enlightenment fromTess’s tragedy. It is believed that women play a crucial role in society. Hardy’s works reflect the change of the society, economy, politics, moral and traditional culture when the bourgeoisie became popular and strong in England.Bourgeoisie society changed the morals, law and religions of the England and result in women’s tragic fate. His works was not only inherited the great tradition of English realism, but also pioneered the 20th century British literature. Tess of the D’urbervilles is not only one of Hardy’ masterpieces but also one of the greatest tragedy works in the history of English literature. In this novel, we can learn that Tess’s attitude to ward her unjust fate is to resist it; however, she failed to change her fate time after time. We can not help thinking about Tess’s tragic fate and feeling pity for her. At the same timewe can deeply feel that her tragedy is inevitable. So the reasons of her tragic fate have become a concern for us. This paper will try to make a detailed analysis of the reasons of Tess’ tragedic fate. And I will discuss it in three parts, they are as follows: the social reasons, the reasons of herself, and theory of Har dy’s fatalism.II. Literature ReviewTess of the D’urbervilles is regarded as the greatest work of Thomas Hardy and the most mature work. It was published one hundred years ago. It is still very popular and attracts generations of scholars’ attention and interests.Manyreaders and critics at home and abroad tend to feel that the most prominent achievements of this novel is that it successfully created the image of theheroineTess, but they interpreted heroine Tess from a different points ofview.Like Liu Kaifu interpreted Tess’s fate from the perspective of pessimism. And Tess’s fatewas influenced by British society, economy, law, religion and moral hypocrisy in people's lives in the19th century. Qian Yanqiu(15) analyzed Tess’s rebellious spirit through Tess's resistance of her fate. We could find the changeof Tess’s thoughts from three parts: from passive to active, from unconscious to rational ,from blind to mature, the complicated description of Tess’s inner heart modeled the charmingheroine image. Yang Yang(23) from two aspects: therelationship between men and women and the relationship between human andnature, revealed the reasons of Tess's tragedy with the ecological feminist principles. By using ecological feminism theory, Yang Yang thought that the social transformation is not always making progress especially in the Victorian period, the social transformation can also make some bad influence on the society, On the basis of Marxist feminist theory, Du Shu(11) thought that in a capitalist society and patriarchal society, Tess's tragedy is inevitable. There are many readers who have discussed the causes of the Tess’s tragic fate from a variety of different perspectives, such as: Nie Zhenzhao, In his book Grief and Fortitude Artist clearly stated "the direct reason caused thetragicfate of this woman is her poverty, social hypocrisy on ethics and unjust legal system "(145). Zhang Xiaoyan(33) discussed the heroic image of Tess fromthe definition and standard of heroism. By analyzing the different period of Tess’s heroism, she concluded that her heroism caused her tragedy. Besides her heroism,Tess's tragedy is also due to the social elements, her character, and Hardy’sfatalism.Professor Webster(45) begins with adiscussion of Hardy’s intentions in writing Tess. According to his views, Tess of the D’urbervilles is a contribution to Hardy’s war against man’s inhumanity.Arnold Kettle(36) takes a different point of view. For him, the subject of Tess of the D’urbervilles is not the tragedy of a “pure woman”,but rather the destruction of the English peasantry. Mr. Kettle sees it as complete as a social novel. All this reveals the roots of the tragedy of Tess from all the above, but for the enduring literary works we should carry out new exploration and new discoveries. In nutshell, through what I have discussed above, it is obviously that her heroism, her character as well as Hardy's fatalism are the direct Causes of Tess's tragedy. But these direct causes are deeply rooted in the cruel social environment: the impoverished peasant, the unjust law and cruel convention. So we can draw a conclusion that the social environment is the main and root cause of Tess's tragedy and realize the social environment has great influence on people’s life.III. Causes for the Tragedy of TessThe reasons of her tragic fate have become a hot concern for us. This paper will try to make a detailed analysis of the reasons of Tess’ trag ic fate. Andthe paper will discuss it in three parts, which are as follows: the social reasons, the reasons of Tess, and the theory of Hardy’s fatalism.A. The Effecfs of the Social Discrimination1.Social EnvironmentThe story happened in the Victorian age. It was a period that England had a great development and it’s economy had developed very well. The rapid development of industry brought a series of serious social problems especially for the lower class. At the end of the 19th century, capitalism expanded throughout England, which caused many poor families bankrupt. They lost their land and had to work for landlords or capitalism under bad conditions in order to support their family. The farmers had to live in poverty. The destruction of English farmers was caused by capitalism, and which is the cause of family’s tragedy. In the late 19th century, the economic crisis took place there in bourgeois world; it led to the social change. The change made many peasants lost their lands and became workers. Large quantities of peasants were bankrupt. It was the same with the D’Urbervilles’s. Their narrow minds and stupidity made them puzzled. The society was so cruel that it did not give them a chance to live and made them discard their children. Tess was born into the family of a poor rural tradesman. Her father drinks a lot and doesn’t work hard. Her mother herself was like a child and never thought about the future. There were many children in their family. Her family is poor and when the old horse “Prince” was killed by accident, the economic condition of her family was worse, that meant the bankrupt of the family. Her mother sent her to claim kin with a distant relative of noble D’Urbervilles family in the hope of changing the poor and miserable condition of the family. Her disjoint from the country leaded to her later tragedy: the young master Alec seduced her and the following pregnancy compelled Tess to return home in disgrace. Her tragic life begun. So the destruction of English peasantry caused by capitalism is the root cause of Tess’s tragedy.2. Unfair LawIf Tess lives in the contemporary era in which people are equally protected by the law,she would not die any more. However, Tess lives in the Victorian era which capitalism invaded the rural region. In the capitalist society, law was served for the capitalist class. Farmers were at the bottle of the society, they never had equal rights as upper class. It is clearly in the novel. Alec, the representative of capitalist power and violence dared to do what he desires, not only because he had money and power, but also because his evil behavior was protected by the capitalist law And rules. In the eyes of Victorian people, the young upstart squire is noble, while Tess is considered to lure Alec in order to acquire Alec's money. Tess bears all that injustice silently all along, however, when she defends herself for the first time, "Justice was done, and President of the Immorals, in Aeschyleanphase, had ended his sport with Tess."(Hardy,49). Obviously, she was the victim of the unjust, hypocritical law.B. The Inner Elements of TessIn one novel, people’s character also takes a very important part. In this novel, people’s character caused the tragedy. Alec and Clare were very closely related to Tess’s fate.1. The Relationship between Tess and the Two Men--Alec and ClareThere were two men who were very closely related to Tess’s fate. Tess was a daughter of poor peasants who had been reduced by a wage laborer, so Alec--- the vicious capitalist power of the Victorian Times and Clare --the representative of liberal bourgeoisiewho killed her cruelly and without mercy. It seem ed that Alec was the prime culprit of Tess, but in fact, it was Clare who killed Tess mo re cruelly. When the horse died, Tess’s famliy got into the economic difficulties. Tess complied with her mother’ suggestion that she w ould claim kin. Since then, Her fate was closely linked with Alec. For the first time, when Alec met Tess, there was a singular force in the gentleman’s face and in his bold rolling eye was Tess’ beauty. The first sentence Alec said to Tess is “well, my beauty, what can I do for you” ( Hardy 32). From the words we believed that Alec never loved Tess but Tess’ beauty. There were many evidence to prove it in The novel. “his eye ,after their first glance upon her face, hung confusedly in every other direction but hers, but came back in a despetate leap every few seconds.” when Alec met Tess again, he gave up his preach. Though many years passed away, Tess’s beauty still exist s and Alec desires her beauty.“remember,my lady, I was your master once! I will be your master again. If you are any m an’ wife you are mine”( Hardy 291) Alec was not only a wicked person that he was eager for hell with Tess but also a hypocritical person. Not saying what he did to Tess, but saying he did not realize his mistakes. When he seduced Tess, he did not realize that the virginity is how important it is for girls. “He just said that why run away like that without saying god bey”(Hardy36). He was ready to pay to the utmost farthing and he would give Tess clothes, money... What a capitalist Alec is. In the eyes of capitalist, all thing can be measured with money. Not to mention the love and the chastity.Alec was a evil person, so he did not sympathize Tess. He only cared for making fun and did not care about other people’s life at all. So after his behiviors harmed Tess, he tried to hurt Tess again. When Tess’ father died, Alec c ame to tempt Tess over and over. Though Tess refused his help, Alec did not give up. He had taken the liberty of speaking to Tess’ mother directly. And Tess’ mother was very p leased with his offerings. So Tess became Alec’s lover again. And the real tragedy will happen soon. When Clare came to find Tess, Tess knew Alec cheated her. In order to pursuit happiness, Tess \killed Alec bravely. But not soon, Tess was sentenced by hanging.Next person--Clare. Generally speaking, Alec destroyed Tess’ body, Cl are d estroyed Tess’s spirit. Comparatively speaking, Clare was the person who killed Tess really. Because Tess’s ture love was him. Tess told Alec so many times That there was one person who she really loved. Though he had abandoned her, she could not stop loving Clare. Clare was not worth for Tess’ love.Clare was a son of pastor. His father wanted to send him abroad to go to university, but he wanted to study farming. Tess met him when she worked in a dairy farm. They fell in love with each other quickly. Clare is a complex character. He looked down upon the upper class. He disliked urban life. He refused his family’ s wish to send him to Cambridge, and went to the county side to study agriculture where he met and fell in love with Tess. They spent a happy love time. But the tragedy happened on the wedding night, when Tess talked her past with Alec, Clare considered Tess was a fallen woman. He still judged purity with the social conventional values and moral standards that were planted in his mind during his education. He was a slave to custom and conventionality. He abandoned his wife for Brazil which was a death blow to the innocent woman Tess. Before he got the story of her past, he thought that she was a beautiful, pure, honest, and innocent girl. Tess wasan angel in his mind. But after that, he just abandoned her. In fact, he knew it was not Tess’s fault, but he did not try to understand her. He ignored her love and heartlessly abandoned her. This made Tess despaired and wanted to leave this world.Clare is also a hypocritical person. He requested Tess to forgive his fault but he did not forgive Tess. Clare did not tell Tess about his past before wedding, only because he was afraid of losing Tess. The temporary law dose not sentence divorce for virginity. Clare justified for himself that “I am a moral man and like my father, I love goodness and I hate impurity. And yet I was lost and confused”(Hardy 89).Alec injured Tess physically. Clare destroyed her spirit. Clare left Tess for Brazil. He suffered from many different difficulties during his travel and realized life’s real meaning. He came back and found Tess. He told Tess he loved Tess and he wanted Tess to live with him. Clare’s reappearance is the direct reason that Tess made decision to kill Alec. These two men who had closely relationship with Tess are the crucial causes of Tess’ tragedy.2. Her FamilyIn a patriarchal society, men and women had already been given different roles due to the influence of traditional culture. In a normal family, girls was taught the female virtues since childhood, while boys were trained how to be a real men.Tess’ father, Jack Durbeyfield, was a vain, foolish man. He did not know he was the descend ant of Durbeyfield. The parson told Tess’ father they were noble. Her father could not do some works. Because her Father drank too much alcohol, he had serious heart disease. The haggling business, which had mainly depended on the horse, became disorganized forthwith(Hardy 38). This showed that their family all depends on the Horse. There were 6 children in this family, if their parent were responsible for their children, they were not giving birth to so many kids. Her father had no ability to live but had stubborn pride. When Tess was seduced by Alec, his father felt that it was a shame not for protecting Tess at first. The most cruel thing her father did is that when Tess’s little baby died, her father did not allow them to invite the Parson Tringham to give baby baptism. The baptism is very important to Christian.Without baptism one can not bury in the church.Tess’ mother was a conceited, ignorant woman. In Tess’ opinion, her mother’ intelligence was that of a happy child; she was simply. When she knew they were the descendants of most noble family D’urbervilles, she planed to persuaded Tess to claim kin. She did not consider there will be some danger in that rich Durbervilles familyand she just thought about changing their. When Tess was seduced by Alec, she blamed Tess that Tess did not protect herself well. How can we imagine that a young girl who did not know anything and can protect herself. All these creatures were the passengers on the Durbeyfield family’ board. their pleasures, their needs, their health, even their survival, entirely dependent on the Durbeyfield couple. The poverty of her family and her strong responsibility are another important reason of Tess’ tragedy.3.The Weakness of Her CharacterApart from fierce Alec and hypocritical Clare, it is the weakness of her character that leads to her tragic fate.1. Tess is a Adamant and Self-contemptuous Woman.Tess was from a poor family that caused her self-abasement. She did not receive high education. She was just a little country gril. When she first came to Alec’ house, she was shockd and flurried. There were some description in the novel. “The crimson brick lodge came first in sight, uo to its eaves in dence evergreens.Tess thought this was the mansion itself till, passing through the side wicket with some trepidation, and onward to apoint at which the drive took a turn, the house proper stood in ful view”(Hardy 31) As Chinese old saying goes, Granny liu came into the grand view garden. “simple Tess Durbeyfield stood at gaze, in a half-alarmed attitude, onthe edge of the gravel sweep. Her feet had brought her onward to this point before she had quite realised where she was; and now all was contrary to her expectation(Hardy 31).Because of her self-abasement, she wanted to support her family by herself. Tess was also a fortitudinous girl. Tess refused the help of Alec again and again. When Alec met Tess again, Alec tried to help Tess many times, but Tess did not accept it. And Tess depended on herself to find a hard job in a farm to support her family. Though she married Clare, she got into a hardship, and she did not ask for help from Clare’s family. We should be pride of Tess’self-independence. But because of her self-independence, she never thought thatshe can ask for help from others. If she was not self-independent,She would not face those hardship and her tragedy would not happen.2. Tess was a Irresolute and Cowardly Woman. When Tess and Clare told each other their past, Tess forgave Clare but Clare did not forgave Tess. Tess said please,Clare, please, forgave me. Tess was a belittle lover. “Clare, please say you forgive me, as I have forgiven you”(Hardy 230). This showedthat Tess still had in a relatively rigorous ethical in hermind. She persuited happiness bravely but she also thought she was guilty. When she was pregnant, she refused to see anyone included her teacherand she alsogave up her study. “but I have not seen her for weeks now. I hadhoped that we might start lessons once again. As I say, she is feeling a bit under the weather. I would very much like to talk to her if I may”( Hardy 39 ). This isa talk between teacher and Tess’s mother. Tess was a cowardly person that she did not want to face the fact. Tess wanted to be a teacher butwhen she experienced the seduce she buried her dream in the heart. She thought she has no qualification to be a teacher just for her guilty. If she Could bravely break the Conventional idea she would live a happy life. But she can not do that, so do us. This is a crucial reason of tragedy of us in any era.3. Tess was a Lack of Self-awareness Woman.Tess was born into a poor family, so she had no opportunity to have high education. This made her mind so narrow. On the one hand, Tess persuit her happiness bravely, she did not give up her self after seducing by Alec, and she fell in love with Clare, she made preparation with the bad result that Clare might not marry her. On the other hand, she was a woman of Victoria period. Women in this ear, did not have the same right and status with men. Tess also obeyed this rules. When Tess was pregnant she also felt she was a fallen woman. H er baby’ name called sorrow that exposed that Tess was a victim of man’ world.Tess was able to fight against the unfair society. She could bravelyface various difficulties in life, yet she couldn’t extricateherself from traditional moral Principles. She realized that she was the victim of social violence and moral principles. Though she dared to beat back the unjustness, she couldn’t break traditional morality completely.C. Hardy’s Fa talism.Fatalism is "that view of life which says all actions is controlled by the nature of thing or by fate which is a great impersonal, primitive force existing through all eternity absolutely independent of human will and superior to any good created by man"(Force 96). This kind of fatalism is revealed in Hardy's many works especially inTess of the D'Urbervilles. Her misfortune started from the death of the only horse. Just at that time, Tess's father leart of a rich family--Alec D'Urbervilles which is his lineage. So Tess was forced to claim kin and not long after she was seduced. After the great frustration, desiring to live a tranquil life, Tess met Angel Clare and fell in love with him. Not wanting to deceive Clear, Tess wrote a letter to confess her "wrong doings", but the letter was misplaced and escapes the notice of Angel. When Tess got for the help of Clare's parents, it was unfortunate that she came upon the sons instead of the father. It was bitterly ironic that while Tess did not get to see Clare's father, the one person who would certainly have sympathized with Tess and helped her, she did get to see one of his converts---Alec D'Urberville, the one person she wished not to encounter alone in the whole world. Just then, her father's Death and her family's homelessness made Tess find no way out. Clear was late just for a few days, although he should have reunited with Tess a few days earlier. These series of chance happening seems to decide Tess's tragedy, and each of them puts Tess further into the mysterious entrapment until her died.V. EnlightenmentTess’s tragedy makes us reconsider women’s important role in the society. The significant chance of Tess’s personality shows her spirits of perseverance and independence, which gradually helps her win human dignity between Alec and Clare. She is a perfect literary figure of the novel, setting an example in struggling against hardship.Tess’ s tragedy gives an warning that women should realise self-preservation and their behaviors. Sometimes, an impulse or a haste choice can bring a tragedy. In a word, being independence is a crucial step for women to win freedom and respect. On the other hand, from the analysis of Tess’s tragedy, we can make a conclusion that it is very necessary of women to improve their social status. People can be tolerant with men’s moral problem s b ut they can not accept women’s immoral deeds, so Tess’s sad experience do not arouse people’ sympathy but defamat e her. With the development ofsociety and technology, the vision and thought of mankind becomes boarder. Obviously, women’ contributions to th e whole society are great and they have taken great efforts to show their abilities. Women will be respected and admired for their great potential in the future.IV. ConclusionTess, the central character of the novel, is strikingly attractive, and distinguished by her deep moral sensitivity and passionate intensity. Her beauty and temperament is harmony with the nature; she is the“daughter of nature”. However, as a daughter of poor peasants, she is reduced by a wage laborer, enjoying low social status. Enduring a great deal of pain in life, finally she is completely destroyed. As a victim of the ill-judged execution, Tess is noble and dignified. Tess is a strong woma n in the novel. She fights against the capitalist system, but in her deep minds, she sub mits to the society. In fact, it is the time she lives inposed her in this poor situation. Be sides, wicked Alec representing evil force is the direct cause for her death. But, it is h ypocritical Angel who kills her indirectly and more cruelly. Facing such a severe situa tion, the weakness of her character is the main reason that caused her tragedy. Thus, encountering so many cases, it seems that Tess’s tragedyis doomed. Tess’s tragic fate is not only of herself, but also of the time she lives in.Works CitedAlvarez,A;Skilton,David.Thomas Hardy .England:Penguin English Library,1978.Brown,Douglas.Thomas Hardy.London:Longmans,Green and Co Ltd,1954.Cecil,David.Hardy the Novelist An Essay in Criticism.London:Constable and company Ltd, 1 972.Clarke,Graham.Thomas Hardy Critical Assessments Volume H.East Sussex .Britain:Helm Information Ltd, 1 993.Chen, Jia.
