You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand – he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him. What visual artists like painter want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist. Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion (运动) and repose (休息), their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at,that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subject that provides an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects. If one painter chooses to paint a broken leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something –all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.61. According to the passage, an artist is always trying to ________.A)interest the public in shapes and colorsB)create something difficult for us to understandC)express something new to usD)make show of his unusual abilities62. It is much more difficult to understand a painting than a novel because ________.A)a painter only provides interesting patternsB) a painter is not good at expressing himselfC)a painter is less experienced or educated than a writerD)a painter uses shapes and colors instead of words63. A painter carefully chooses certain shapes and colors as ________.A)they express his feeling and experiencesB)they carry messages to the publicC)they can teach the publicD)they can express the painter’s feelings, carry messages and teach the public64. Paintings of unpleasant objects and paintings of beauty are ________.A)all trying to show us somethingB)of different art skillsC)of different art stylesD)of different acceptance to the public65. It is implied but not directly stated that ________.A)paintings are nothing more than the arrangement of shapes and colorsB)painters are no good at writingC)we should look beyond shapes and colors to understand what the artist is driving atD)the public is more interested in writing than in paintingPassage TwoQuestions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:I don’t get five good, genuine, p ersonal letters a year. The time is coming when the letter written with pen and ink and sent as a personal message from one person to another will be as much of a rarity (rare) as the gold pocket watch carried on a chain. It’s a shame. There is something s pecial about a personal letter. It’s better than a phone call, no matter what the telephone company says. A phone call disappears into the air as soon as the receiver is put back on the hook. A good letter can last a lifetime. Some of my most precious possessions are letters that have been written to me sometime in the past. I don’t have a single memorable phone call stored in a box in my attic (阁楼) or basement. I’ve never thrown away a good letter and, like any real treasure, I don’t even have to look at them to enjoy having them. I know I have them. The telephone calls come and go. They make no permanent impression on me and have no place in my memory.A personal letter is a good thing because you say things you can’t say in a crowd and might not even say to the person face to face. If you feel like it, a letter allows you to take yourself and your thoughts more seriously than you would dare take them in conversation. And you can say things without interruption.A good letter is, in many ways, the exact opposite of a political speech. A politicianaddressing a crowd has to talk so broadly and generally about the issues in order not to offend any one of the thousands of people listening that he usually ends up saying nothing. A letter can be specific, and if the writer has some bias (偏见) or prejudice, he can even reveal his true self by letting this show. Writing a friend, you don’t have to be careful. Abraham Lincoln’s letter to his step-brother telling him he wasn’t going to loan him the eighty dollars he asked for tells you more about Abraham Lincoln than the Gettysburg Address does. Some of our best history has come that way, from personal letters of famous people that scholars have dug up. You get a better idea of what someone is really like from a personal letter they weren’t expecting you to read than you get from a carefully considered public statement they’ve made. We say real things in letters.66. What is a shame according to the author?A) People sometimes write letters with pen and ink.B) People hardly carry a gold pocket watch.C) People never receive any personal letters.D) People rarely send any personal letters.67. What’s the main idea of paragraphs 2 and 3?A) What a good personal letter is.B) What advantages personal letters have.C) Why people don’t write personal letters.D) Why writing personal letters is so special.68. What do “issues” in paragraph 5 mean?A) The key points of a political speech.B) The speaker’s bias and prejudice.C) Problems that the audiences have.D) Questions that arise for discussion.69. Why does the author use Abraham Lincoln’s example?A) To show that a political address has to be general.B) To show that letter writing sometimes offends people.C) To show that people say real things in personal letters.D) To show that even a great man has his dark side.70. What’s the best word to describe t he tone of the author?A) Objective.B) Persuasive.C) Humorous.D) Ironic.Passage 3Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:People who have to fly all the time for business usually find it boring. People who fly only once in a while are excited. However, some people feel only terror when they board an airplane. They suffer from a phobia, an illogical fear.We always hear about a plane crash, but we don’t hear about the millions of flights every year that are safe. Riding in a car is thirty times more dangerous than flying, but most of us are not afraid every time we get into a car. It is not logical to be afraid of flying, but research shows thatabout 12 percent of people have this fear.People with a phobia about flying are afraid for one or more reasons. They are afraid of heights. They avoid high places, and if they are in a high-rise building, they don’t look out the windows. They might be afraid of being in an enclosed place like an elevator or tunnel on a highway. When they get on an airplane, they can’t get out until the end of the flight, and the flight might last for hours.Maybe they are afraid of the crowds and all the noise and people rushing around at an airport. This especially bothers old people. Some people are afrai d of the unknown. They don’t understand the technology of flying and can’t believe that a huge airplane can stay up in the air.Others are afraid of loss of control. They need to control every situation they are in. When they drive a car, they have some chance of avoiding an accident. In an airplane they have no control over anything. It terrifies them to give up control to the pilot and the rest of the crew.71. What does the author think of flying?A) It is very boring.B) It is extremely dangerous.C) It is very frightening.D) It is relatively safe.72. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word “phobia”?A) Extreme boredom. C) Great excitement.B) Unreasonable fear. D) Strong dislike.73. Who is NOT suffering from a phobia?A) A person who’s afraid of height.B) A person who feels horror in an elevator.C) A person who feels frightened when walking in a tunnel.D) A person who’s terrified to see an air crash.74. Why do many people feel that driving a car is safer than flying?A) Because the car makes no noises.B) Because they have a sense of control while driving.C) Because fewer people die in car accidents.D) Because they have never had car accidents.75. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A) Boring FlightsB) Flying SafetyC) Fear of FlyingD) Better to DrivePart V Translation from English into Chinese (15 points)Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined parts, numbered 76 to 80. After reading the passage carefully, you should translate the underlined parts into Chinese.Remember to write your translation on the Translation Sheet. If one person can be said to have led the world into the age of technology it was Thomas Alva Edison. 76) Not only did he invent and perfect many of the technologies vital to the modernworld, he also set the standard for how research and development is done today.Edison was guided by his belief that genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. Consequently, he worked day and night for much of his life. By the time he died in 1931, he had patented over 1,100 inventions. 77) Some were his own, but many were improvements he had made to the inventions of others.Few of Edison’s most useful inven tions were entirely original. 78) Instead, he concentrated much of his time and effort on improving existing products. One was the telephone. 79) Alexander Graham Bell invented it, but it was Edison who improved the range and clarity of this instrument so it could be put to practical use by ordinary people.80) Moreover, some of the inventions attributed to Edison had already been invented. One example is the light bulb -- or more correctly, the incandescent filament electric lamp. This was first demonstrated in London in 1878 by its English inventor, Joseph Wilson Swan. However, when Edison demonstrated his light bulb in the US the following year, it was he who was credited for giving the world electric light.76.他不仅发明并完善了许多对现代世界至关重要的技术,他还为今天如何进行研究、开发设定了标准。

Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can't eat or use. If we kept these things, we would soon have a mountain of rubbish. In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside the city to a dump. Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage(污水,排水)system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places. To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you'd never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump. In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything except the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles where they slowly change intosomething called humus(腐殖质), which looks like black earth. Spock encouraged parents to listen to their children and respond to their wishes. New parents quickly made Dr. Spock's book the best-selling book in US history. By 1952, sales had reached 4 million copies per year for the next eighteen years. Critics (批评家) who believed that the old ways of raising children were best accused Spock of being too permissive. One couple in Sweden decided to take that logic a few steps further, and are refusing to tell anyone whether their child is a boy or a girl. The child –called Pop, to protect his or her identity –is now two years old, and only a few close relatives know the sex. “We want Pop to grow up more freely,” Pop’s mother said. Pop wears dresses, and also “male” styled pants and Pop’s hairstyle changes often. Nordenstrom, who studies hormonal (荷尔蒙) influences on gender, says, “It will affect the child, but it’s hard to say if it will hurt the development. I don’t know what they are trying to achieve. It’s going to make the child different.”She says if Pop is still “genderless(无性的)” by the time he or she starts school, Pop will certainly receive a lot of attention from classmates. “We don’t know exactly what determines sexual identity, but it’s not only sexual education,” says Nordenstrom. “Gender-typical behavior, sexual preferences and sexual identity usually go together. There are hormonal and other influences that we don’t know that will determine the gender of the child.” Pop will soon welcome a brother, or a sister. Pop’sparents will not reveal the sex of that child, either, except, perhaps, to Pop.1. What did the couple in Sweden do to their child?A. They taught their child to take a few steps further.B. They didn't want anyone to know the sex of their baby before it was born.C. They are refusing to tell the sex of their child.D. They refused to let their relatives get close to their child.2. Why was the child called Pop?A. It is a very beautiful name for a child.B. The parents want this name to bring the child good luck.C. It is a very meaningful name.D. The name makes it hard for others to tell the sex of the baby.3. What can we learn from what Nordenstrom said?A. It's hard to tell whether the influence on the child will be good or bad.B. The child will become abnormal (反常的).C. The child is neither a boy nor a girl because it is "genderless."D. Hormonal influence will determine the gender of the child.4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Pop is going to have a brother or a sister.B. Pop will know the sex of himself or herself soon.C. Pop's parents decided to tell people the baby's sex.D. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.1. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ___________A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.B. People who work in London prefer to live in the country.C. Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.D. Many nature lovers,。

It is always interesting to visit another country, especially for those who have never traveled a great deal. Foreign travel can be very educational for anyone if he is interested enough to make preparations beforehand. Learning the language of the new country would be difficult for the traveler, 1 the benefits of such an effort would become obvious immediately on his arrival. It may not seem important to him when he comfortably stays at home, but knowing how to 2 a meal or book a room is necessary for the newcomer in a strange country. Without knowing the language, it is very difficult 3 the stranger to understand the people of the new country and their customs. Of course,in our small world it is often possible to find someone 4 understands our own, but this is only second–best for the traveler. To be sure, he can see places and things without the use of a language, but places and things are not the heart of any country. To get the greatest benefit from a trip 5 another country, it is how important for the visitor to have an understanding of the language.•B 1.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. who•C 2.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. who•D 3.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. who•E 4.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. who•A 5.A. to B. but C. order D. for E. who22.Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools everyday by train, car or bus, even though this means they have toget up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. If one likes gar dens, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.•B1. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ___________• A. People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city. B. People who work in London prefer to live in the country. C. Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London. D. Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside the city.•C2. In a society where life continues year after year with few changes, the languages do not change either. The earliest known languages had difficult grammar but a small, limited vocabulary. Over the century, the grammar changed, and the vocabulary grew. For example, the English and Spanish people who came to America during the sixteenth century gave names to all the new plants and animals they found. In this way, hundreds of new words were introduced into English and Spanish vocabularies. Today life is changing very fast, and language is changing fast too. There are several major language families in the world. Some scientists say there are nine main families, but other scientists divided them differently. The languages in each family are connected, and scientists think that they came from the same parent language. About 3% of the people in the world speak languages that are not in these major families.•B1. The early language had many words and easy grammar.• A. T B. F•A2. The first great invention was one that is still very important today---the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances. For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Th en in the early 1800?s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn?t have to explore much anymore. They began to work instead to make life better. In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the electric light and the radio. These all became a big part if our life today. The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909; sound movies in 1926; the computer in 1928; and jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a newmaterial was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear. The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live long lives. By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.By this time most people had a very good life. of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire to explore again. The world is known to man but the stars are not yet. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space. In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning though. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.41. The successful person reads a lot.We learn nearly all of our active vocabulary through context, and usually through context in reading. We learn what a new word means from the words and sentences around it. Only once in a while do we give up and look the word up in a dictionary. But this is not laziness; it?s a good way to learn. Words that we learn through their use in context are much more likely to stay with us than words we memorize by themselves, as in a list or in a dictionary if we are prone to read a dictionary. The words we learn through reading will improve not just our reading vocabulary but our listening, speaking and writing vocabulary as well. It is these four types of vocabulary that have a direct impact upon our daily lives. They control how ell we understand what we hear and read how well we speak and write. So we can see that vocabulary is so much more than …fancy words you won?t use?. It represents your thoughts. It gives you social, economic, and academic power.46. What is meant by …prone (to)? in the last sentence of the second paragraph?A. happy (to)B. likely (to)C. willing (to)D. eager (to)48. Which of the following has an immediate influence on our daily lives?A. Reading and listening vocabulary.B. Only reading vocabulary.C. Speaking and writing vocabulary.D. Both A and C.49. The author thinks that we learn most of our vocabulary ___.A. through context in readingB. through a list of wordsC. through contact with othersD. through repeating unfamiliar sentences50. By saying …that vocabulary is so much more than “fancy words you won?t use”?, the author means___.A. there exist much more words learnt through four types of vocabulary than those we seldom useB. we can understand some of the special words through imaginationC. we can learn new words through four types of vocabulary much more easilyD. there are fewer unfamiliar words in popular writingsPassage 3An election year is one in which all four numbers are evenly divisible by four (1944, 1948, etc). He was elected in 1860, and his untimely death came five years later.James A. Garfield, a former Union army general from Ohio, was shot during his first year in office (1881) by a man to whom he wouldn?t give a job. While in his second term of office (1901), William Mckinley, another Ohioan, attended thePan-American Exposition at Buffalo, New York. During the reception, he was assassinated while shaking hands with some of the guests.Three years after his election in 1920 Warren G. Harding died in office. You should decide onthe best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through thecenter.Passage 1Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:I experienced a shock when I saw a curtain go up for the first time. My mother had taken me to see a play at the Schubert Theater on Lenox Avenue in Harlem in New York City. Here were living people talking to one another inside a large ship whose deck actually moved up and down with the swells of the sea. By this time I had been going to the movies every Saturday afternoon–Charlie Chaplin’s little comedies, adventure serials, Westerns.Yet once you knew how they worked, movies, unlike the stage, left the mind’s grasp of reality intact (完整的) since the happenings were not in the theater where you sat. But to see the deck of the ship in the theater moving up and down, and people appearing at the top of a ladder or disappearing through a door--where did they come from and where did they go? Obviously into and out of the real world of Lenox Avenue. This was alarming. And so I learned that there were two kinds of reality, but that the stage was far more real. As the play’s melodramatic (情节剧的) story developed, I began to feel anxious, for there was a villain (恶人) on board who had a bomb and intended to blow everybody up. All over the stage people were looking for him but he appeared, secretive and silent, only when the searchers were facing the other way. They looked for him behind posts and boxes and on top of beams, even after the audience had seen him jump into a barrel and pull the lid over him. People were shouting, “He’s in the barrel,” but the passengers were deaf. What anguish! The bomb would go off any minute, and I kept clawing at my mother’s arm, at the same time glancing at the theater’s walls to make sure that the whole thing was not really real. The villain was finally caught, and we happily walked out onto sunny Lenox Avenue, saved again.61. Where was the large ship?A) In a book about Lenox Avenue.B) In a river at Harlem. C) In a movie of Chaplin’s. D) On stage at a theater.62. What were the two kinds of reality?A) That of real life and the theater. B) That of the theater and the cinema.C) That of reality and fantasy. D) That of real life and the cinema.63. Which word best describes the author’s reaction when the villain first appeared on stage?A) Anxiety. B) Curiosity. C) Amusement. D) Excitement.64. Why were the passengers deaf?A) Because the audience were too noisy. B) Because they could not see the villain.C) Because they were friends of the villain. D) Because they were not supposed to hear the audience.65. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A) First Experience at the Theater B) Two Realities C) The Adventure of a Villain D) Pirate Story Passage 2Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:In some ways the employment interview is like a persuasive speech because the applicant (interviewee) seeks to persuade the employer (interviewer) to employ him or her. Several suggestions might prove helpful to the applicant when he or she is preparing for the actual interview.A job applicant should gather certain types of information before the interview. First, the applicant should know what kind of job he wants and how that job relates to his career objective. It is important that the applicant be able to state why he wishes to work for a particular company. Second, the applicant should seek as much information as possible about the company, such as the location, the financial situation of the company, plans for expansion, and company philosophy. Information about most big corporations is available in reference books and periodicals (期刊).After gathering information about the company, the applicant is ready for the interview. The Interviewer’s first impression comes from the interviewee’s appearance. For most interviews, the appropriate dress for a man is a conservative (保守的) dark colored suit with a long sleeve white or light blue shirt and conservative tie.Although hairstyle and dress are matters of personal taste, many personnel directors get first impressions from these characteristics. For example, one recent college graduate, who felt himself qualified, interviewed for a public relations job. However, the personnel manager considered this young man’s long hair, sloppy (不整洁的) dress, and overly casual manner unsuited for this particular position.66. For whom is the passage most likely written?A) An employee. B) An employer. C) An interviewee. D) An interviewer.67. As the author suggests, what the applicant should know before the interview is_______.A) the type of work he wants and his career expectationB) the manager and the people he will be working withC) his career objective a particular company will decideD) the reasons why a particular company wants to employ him68. Before the interview, the applicant should obtain some information about_______.A) business and philosophy B) the company he wants to work forC) most big corporations D) reference books and periodicals69. What the applicant wears, as the author suggests, can make him become_______.A) expressive B) impressive C) informative D) conservative70. What does the passage tell us through the example in the last paragraph?A) The importance of personal taste. B) The importance of public relations.C) The importance of self-confidence. D) The importance of a first impression.Passage 3Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:Those outdated or idle (闲散的) computers may be just what Baker needs to turn his ideas into scientific breakthroughs. Baker, 43, a professor of biochemistry at the University of Washington, realized about two years ago that he didn’t have access to the computing horsepower needed for his research—nor the money to buy time on supercomputers elsewhere. So he turned to the kindness—and the computers—of strangers.Using software made popular in a massive yet so far fruitless search for intelligent life beyond Earth, he and his research team are tapping the computing power of tens of thousands of PCs whose owners are donating spare computer time to chop away at scientific problems over the Internet. Baker’s Rosetta home project is attracting PC users who like the idea of helping find a cure for cancer and admire the way Baker has involved regular people in his research that aims to predict how protein structures unfold at the atomic level.Baker’s work could one day lead to cures to diseases from cancer to Alzheimer’s. The project takes a more direct approach to other diseases, including the search for an HIV vaccine (疫苗). In that case, his team hopes to develop a way to help the body recognize critical parts of the virus’ proteins so that it can no longer hide from the body’s immune system. The project sends work to computers that have installed the necessary free software. When the machine is idle, it figures out how an individual protein—a building block of lif e—might fold or contort, displaying the possibilities in a screen saver. When the PC is done crunching (处理), it sends the results back to Baker’s team and grabs more work. More than 60,000 people are donating computer power to Baker’s research—similar to the power of one supercomputer. He hopes to increase that number by at least tenfold—enough to lead to major scientific breakthroughs.71. What was the problem Baker faced with two years ago?A) The impracticality of his research ideas. B) The inadequacy of the computer software.C) The lack of enough computer horsepower. D) The limited access to strangers’ computers.72. What does “chop away at” (Para. 2) most probably mean?A) “deal with”B) “increase”C) “discuss”D) “think of”73. What can be said about Baker’s research?A) His research was regarded by many people as useless.B) His research was admired by many seriously ill people.C) His research could probably help find intelligent life beyond Earth.D) His research could possibly benefit those who suffer severe illnesses.74. How does Baker make use of other people’s computers?A) By buying the computers’ idle time and letting them work for him.B) By persuading the PC owners to sell their old computers to him.C) By installing software and letting them process the data at owner’s home.D) By moving them to his research lab and having them hooked to the net.75. Which of the following is true about Baker’s way of research?A) It is not reliable or convenient. B) It is very creative and economical.C) It is too ideal to be put into actual use. D) It sounds good but doesn’t turn out useful.Part V Translation from English into Chinese (15 points)Directions:In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined parts, numbered 76 to 80. After reading the passage carefully, you should translate the underlined parts into Chinese. Remember to write your translationon the Translation Sheet.Jane Goodall was born in London, England, on April 3, 1934. On her second birthday, her father gave her a toy chimpanzee (黑猩猩) named Jubilee. Jubilee was’ named after a baby chimp in the London Zoo, and seemed to foretell the course Jane’s life would take. To this day, Jubilee sits in a chair in Jane’s London home. From an early age, Jane was fascinated by animals and animal stories. 76)By the age of 10, she was talking about going to Africa to live among the animals there. At the time, in the early 1940s, this was a radical (激进的) idea because women did not go to Africa by themselves. As a young woman, Jane finished school in London, attended secretarial school, and then worked for a documentary filmmaker for a while. When a school friend invited her to visit Kenya, she worked as a waitress until she had earned the fare to travel there by boat. She was 23 years old.Once in Kenya, she met Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous scientist. 77)He was impressed with her thorough knowledge of Africa and its wildlife, and hired her to assist him and his wife. Dr. Leakey and Jane began planning a study of a group of chimpanzees who were living on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Kenya. In July of 1960, Jane arrived at Gombe National Park in what was then called Tanganyika and is now called Tanzania. Jane faced many challenges as she began her work. 78)The chimpanzees did not accept her right away, and it took months for them to get used to her presence in their territory. But she was very patient and remained focused on her goal. Little by little, she was able to enter their world. At first, she was able to watch the chimpanzees only from a great distance, using binoculars (望远镜). As time passed, she was able to move her observation point closer to them while still using camouflage (伪装). Eventually, she was able to sit among them, touching, patting, and even feeding them. 79)It was an amazingaccomplishment for Jane, and a breakthrough in the study of animals in the wild. Jane named all of the chimpanzees that she studied, stating in her journals that she felt they each had a unique personality. One of the first significant observations that Jane made during the study was that chimpanzees make and use tools, much like humans do, to help them get food. It was previously thought that humans alone used tools.80)Also thanks to Jane’s research, we now know that chimps eat meat as well as plants and fruits. In many ways, she has helped us to see how chimpanzees and humans are similar. In doing so, she has made us more sympathetic toward these creatures, while helping us to better understand ourselves.Jane pursued a graduate degree while still conducting her study, receiving her Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1965. In 1984, she received the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Prize for “helping millions of people understand the importance of wildlife conservation to life on this planet.”Dr. Jane Goodall is now the world’s most famous authority on chimpanzees, having studied their behavior for nearly 40 years.76.到十岁时,她已经在谈论要去非洲,和那里的动物生活/住在一起。
