AAccording to a report,8 out of 10 Americans over the age of 25 are considered overweight. With fatness levels rising in America,it is necessary to stay in shape and maintain (保持) a healthy living style. Here are helpful tips on maintaining a healthy body and losing a few pounds slowly over the long term.A quick run will burn off 50 to 150 calories.A fifteen-minute walk, every day, will burn off a few calories.Although these kinds of brief exercise won’t make you thin overnight, they will keep your metabolism (新陈代谢) up during the day and your body will be using that energy you take in instead of storing it as fat.It takes about fifteen to twenty minutes for our brain to let our stomach know that we are full.Wolfing down (狼吞虎咽地吃) your food is not a good habit since there is a tendency to overeat. If you spend more time chewing, and give yourself thirty seconds between bites, you may find that you’re eating less.Eating smaller portions (份) every few hours in the day will keep your metabolism running high. There is no need to eat much food in one time.Eating more times but small portions throughout the day can help you get the energy your body needs, and you won’t get hungry.People don’t think that drinks count, which is wrong.Soda has a lot of empty calories.High sugar coffee drinks may help you stay awake if you are sleepy, but the sugar can make you more tired a few hours later. If you like the taste of soda, stick to proper diet soda.Remember that water is still the healthiest choice. These helpful tips may not help you lose weight fast, but they are an effective way to help maintain a long-term healthy body.1.What can we learn from the passage?A.80 percent of Americans are unhealthy.B.Most of American adults are fat.C.Running can make a person lose weight quickly.D.Maintaining a healthy living style is very easy.2.According to the third paragraph the writer advises people to________.A.eat food slowlyB.have a rest after a mealC.eat less every dayD.do exercise every day3.It can keep your metabolism running high if you________.A.drink much sodaB.wolf down your foodC.sleep for a long timeD.eat small and frequent meals4.Which of the following does the writer think the healthiest for people?A.Water.B.Sugar drinks.C.Coffee drinks. D.Diet soda.BWhether in the workplace or on the football field, effective teamwork can produce amazing results. However, working successfully as a team is not as easy as it may seem.Effective teamwork certainly does not just happen automatically;it takes a great deal of hard work and compromise. There are a number of factors that must be in place to make a good team.Effective leadership is one of the most important factors of good teamwork. The team’s leader should possess the skills to create and preserve a positive working environment and motivate and inspire the team members to take a positive approach to work and be highly committed. An effective team leader will promote a high level of spirit and make them feel supported and valued.Communication is a vital factor of all interpersonal relationship and especially that of a team.Team members must be able to articulate their feelings, express plans and goals, share ideas and see each other’s opinions.Conflicts will arise no matter how well a team functions together. The best way to deal with conflicts is to have some organized methods of handling conflicts.Team members should be able to voice their concerns without fear of offending others.Instead of avoiding conflict issues,a hands-on approach that settles them quickly is much better. It is often advised that the team leader sit with the conflicting parties and help work out their differences without taking sides and trying to remain objective if possible. The team leader most set a good example to create good teamwork. In order to keep team members positive and committed and motivated, the team leader himself needs to show these qualities. The team turns to the leader for support and guidance. So any negative words or behaviors on the leader’s part call be disastrous.Whatever type of work you are in,knowing how to effectively work on and with a team is going to be extremely important to your success and that of your team.5.Effective leadership is important partly because ________.A.it helps a leader to develop lots of skillsB.it makes a leader feel supported and valuedC.it creates a positive working environmentD.it depends on interpersonal relationship of a team6.The underlined word“articulate”probably means ________.A.hide B.expressC.feel D.plan7.To become a good team leader, you have to________.A.be positive and committedB.set up a good teamC.look for support from the teamD.avoid natural disasters8.Which is the best title for the passage?A.Football and TeamworkB.What Makes Effective TeamworkC.Handle Conflict in a TeamD.Communication and TeamworkCWhen the dog named Judy spotted the first sheep in her life, she did what comes naturally. The four-year-old dog set off racing after the sheep across several fields and, being a city animal, lost both her sheep and her sense of direction. Then she ran along the edge of a cliff(悬崖) and fell 100 feet, bouncing off a rock into the sea.Her owner Mike Holden panicked and called the coastguard of Cornwall, who turned up in seconds. Six volunteers slid down the cliff with the help of a rope but gave up all hope of finding her alive after a 90-minute search.Three days later, a hurricane hit the coast near Cornwall. Mr. Holden returned home from his holiday upset and convinced his pet was dead. He comforted himself with the thought she had died in the most beautiful part of the country. For the next two weeks, the Holdens were heartbroken. Then, one day,the phone rang and Steve Tregear, the coastguard of Cornwall, asked Holden if he would like his dog back.A birdwatcher, armed with a telescope, found the pet sitting desperately on a rock. While he sounded the alarm, a student from Leeds climbed down the cliff to collect Judy. The dog had initially been knocked unconscious (失去知觉的) but had survived by drinking water from a fresh stream at the base of the cliff. She may have fed on the body of a sheep which had also fallen over the edge.“The dog was very thin and hungry,”Steve Tregear said.“It was a very lucky dog. She survived because of a plentiful supply of fresh water,”he added. It was, as Mr. Holden admitted,“a minor miracle (奇迹)”.9.The dog Judy fell down the cliff when she was ________.A.rescuing her ownerB.caught in a hurricaneC.blocked by a rockD.running after a sheep10.Who spotted Judy after the accident?A.A birdwatcher.B.A student from Leeds.C.Six volunteers.D.The coastguard of Cornwall.11.What can we infer from the text?A.People like to travel with their pets.B.Judy was taken to the fields for hunting.C.Luck plays a vital role in Judy’s survival.D.Holden cared little where Judy was buried.DI began working in journalism when I was eight. It was my mother’s idea. She wanted me to “make something”of myself, and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition. With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST.When it was supper time.I walked back home.“How many did you sell,my boy?”my mother asked.“None.”“Where did you go?”“The corner of Bel leville and Union Avenues.”“What did you do?”“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”“You just stood there.”“Didn’t sell a single one.”“My God,Russell!”Uncle Allen put in,“Well,I’ve decided to take the Post.”I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickel(五分镍币).It was the first nickel I earned.Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman.I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence,and persuade them by saying that no one,no matter how poor, could afford to be without the Saturday E v ening Post in the home. One day,I told my mother I’d changed my mind.I didn’t want to make a success in the magazine business.“If you think you can change your mind like this,”she replied,“you’ll become a good-for-nothing.”She insisted that.As soon as school was over.I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines.Whenever I said no,she would scold me.My mother and I had fought this_battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s plain workman’s life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.12.From the dialogue between the boy and his mother,we learn that the mother was ________.A.excited B.interestedC.ashamed D.disappointed13.What did the mother do when the boy wanted to give up?A.She forced him to continue.B.She punished him.C.She gave him some money.D.She changed her plan.14.What does the underlined phrase “this battle”(last paragraph) refer to?A.The war between the boy’s parents.B.The arguing between the boy and his mother.C.The quarrel between the boy and his customers.D.The fight between the boy and his father.15.What is the text mainly about?A.The early life of a journalist.B.The early success of a journalist.C.The happy childhood of the writer.D.The important role of the writer in his family.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

house in Honley, and when he was tiny his dad,a former miner, got a job in the textile trade and the Byford's moved to Skelmanthorpe.Life was tough but fun,and young Peter spent his days in the rolling countryside, rafting on the river, making tree camps or playing on his own with his model railway and soldiers. His world was rocked by tragedy when his mother died, which destroyed young Peter,a shy child who suddenly had to grow up fast.Though grieving,he went up the road to live with his aunt and uncle, and returned home much too young to face the next challenge, that of looking after his dad,who had lost an arm in an accident in a factory.By then he had taken the nickname as Biff. The younger Biff struggled at school because of his shyness, but loved the music lessons and became friends with a classmate whose brother had a guitar. At the same time a young man who had a banjo(班卓琴)moved into the house opposite where he lived and he taught young Biff how to play it.The seeds had been sown and music began to influence his life. But even so,his working career began,in typical fashion for 1960s West Yorkshire. After a short time as an apprentice(学徒)carpenter,he went to work in the local weaving factory. And this was where Biff Byford, soon to become a legend in the world of rock, first learned to sing. The machines would run all day,clickety-clack,clickety-clack.The noise was incredible, and the workers would spend their time trying to lip read each other. It was just so noisy in there. It was really heavy metal. The only thing to do was sing to yourself. So sing to himself he did,the melodies(旋律)locking in place in his head, not to be forgotten. His dream first exploded into a rocking reality.1.When Peter Byford was born ______.A.his family moved to SkelmanthorpeB.his father worked in the textile tradeC.his father probably took a job in HonleyD.his family lived a very poor life2.Peter Byford had to leave his aunt and uncle ______.A.because his mother passed awayB.because of his father's poor healthC.because he wanted not to stay with his fatherD.because of his fully being grown-up3.What does the third paragraph imply?A.Peter got influenced a lot by his classmate and the young man.B.the classmate taught Peter how to play the guitar.C.Peter shared a house with the young man.D.The young Biff had an eye for good friends.4.While working in the local weaving factory ______.A.Peter started as an apprentice carpenterB.Peter treated his life in a positive wayC.Peter was very tired of the noisy workplaceD.Peter learned how to lip read by himself5.What would happen to Peter later?A.He would remain working in the factory forever.B.He would put forward suggestions to the boss.C.He would tell the workers to keep silent.D.He would find ways to realize his dream.BMark Twain has been called the inventor of the American novel. And he surely deserves additional praise:the man who popularized the clever literary attack on racism.I say clever because anti-slavery fiction had been the important part of the literature in the years before the Civil War.H.B.Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions,Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story.Again and again,in the postwar years,Twain seemed forced to deal with the challenge ofrace.Consider the most controversial,at least today,of Twain's novels,Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.Only a few books have been kicked off the shelves as often as Huckleberry Finn,Twain's most widely read tale.Once upon a time, people hated the book because it struck them as rude.Twain himself wrote that those who banned the book considered the novel “trash and suitable only for the slums(贫民窟).”More recently the book has been attacked because of the character Jim,the escaped slave, and many occurences of the word nigger.(The term Nigger Jim,for which the novel is often severely criticized, never appears in it.)But the attacks were and are silly—and miss the point. The novel is strongly anti-slavery.Jim's search through the slave states for the family from whom he has been forcibly parted is heroic.AsJ.Chadwick has pointed out,the character of Jim was a first in American fiction—a recognition that the slave had two personalities,“the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the individual:Jim,the father and the man.”There is much more.Twain's mystery novel Pudd'nhead Wilson stood as a challenge to the racial beliefs of even many of the liberals of his day.Written at a time when the accepted wisdom held Negroes to be inferior(低等的)to whites, especially in intelligence,Twain's tale centered in part around two babies switched at birth.A slave gave birth to her master's baby and,for fear that the child should be sold South, switched him for the master's baby by his wife. The slave's lightskinned child was taken to be white and grew up with both the attitudes and the education of theslave-holding class. The master's wife's baby was taken for black and grew up with the attitudes and intonations of the slave. The point was difficult to miss:nurture(养育),not nature, was the key to social status. The features of the black man that provided the stuff of prejudice—manner of speech, for example—were,to Twain, indicative of nothing other than the conditioning that slavery forced on its victims.Twain's racial tone was not perfect. One is left uneasy, for example,by the lengthy passage in his autobiography(自传)about how much he loved what were called“nigger shows”in his youth—mostly with white men performing in black-face—and his delight in getting his mother to laugh at them.Yet there is no reason to think Twain saw the shows as representing reality. His frequent attacks on slavery and prejudice suggest his keen awareness that they did not.Was Twain a racist?Asking the question in the 21st century is as wise as asking the same of Lincoln. If we read the words and attitudes of the past through the“wisdom”of the considered moral judgments of the present,we will find nothing but error.Lincoln, who believed the black man the inferior of the white, fought and won a war to free him.And Twain, raised in a slave state, briefly a soldier, and inventor of Jim,may have done more to anger the nation over racial injustice and awaken its collective conscience than any other novelist in the past century.1.How do Twain's novels on slavery differ from Stowe's?A.Twain was more willng to deal with racism.B.Twain's attack on racism was much less open.C.Twain's themes seemed to agree with plots.D.Twain was openly concerned with racism.2.Recent criticism of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn arose partly from its________.A.target readers at the bottomB.anti-slavery attitudeC.rather impolite languageD.frequent use of “nigger”3.What best proves Twain's anti-slavery stand according to the author?A.Jim's search for his family was described in detail.B.The slave's voice was first heard in American novels.C.Jim grew up into a man and a father in the white culture.D.Twain suspected that the slaves were less intelligent.4.The story of two babies switched mainly indicates that________.A.slaves were forced to give up their babies to their mastersB.slaves' babies could pick up slave-holders' way of speakingC.blacks' social position was shaped by how they were brought upD.blacks were born with certain features of prejudice5.W hat does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 7 refer to?A.The attacks. B.Slavery and prejudice.C.White men. D.The shows.6.What does the author mainly argue for?A.Twain had done more than his contemporary writers to attack racism.B.Twain was an admirable figure comparable to Abraham Lincoln.C.Twain's works had been banned on unreasonable grounds.D.Twain's works should be read from a historical point of view.C阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C或D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction. “No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged, or stimulated(刺激),” Edwards points out. “The problem is how we promote(使…成为现实)that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution.”In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activity before and after AIBO. Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,” says a seventy-year-old lady, “When I’m watching TV, he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own.”The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people. Often the elderly are disabledand cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry.” Beck says. “But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”“Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more-valuable health helper. They will record their masters’ blood pressure, oxygen levels. Or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people’s minds.”1.The purpose of Beck and Edwards’ study is to _______.A.understand human-animal relationshipB.make lonely old people’s life betterC.find the causes of old people’s lonelinessD.promote the animal-assisted research2.In the research, the old people are asked to ________.A.note the activities of AIBOsB.keep AIBOs at home for 12 weeksC.record their feelings and activityD.analyze the collected information3.What is the advantage of AIBO over live dogs?A.It is easier to keep at home.B.It can help the disabled people.C.It responds to all the human orders.D.It can watch TV with its owner.4.The author seems to suggest that the future robotic dogs may _______.A.cure certain diseasesB.keep old people activeC.change people’s beliefsD.look more like real gods6、 Powerful enough to lift 1,000 pounds, capable of going where no man can go and able to stop a flowing oil well,a team of undersea robots have become known as superheroes in the effort to stop the oil pouring into the Gulf of Mexico. The underwater remote-operated vehicles are able to stand 5,000 pounds of deepsea pressure in the Gulf of Mexico. They can also lift a ton, take photos, and they are the best-equipped vehicles in the world.“They are very active and they are playing a very vital role in everything we do,”BP spokesman Mark Sa lt said in a statement.“People can’t be down there, but these robots can do.”Robots are working 5,000 feet below sea level to help contain the leak(泄漏),which has poured out millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon,a kind of off-shore drilling(钻孔)equipment operated by BP,blew up on April 20,killing 11 workers. The cameras that provide the data are attached to the robots as they work around the leaking site. They made news this week when one robot bumped into a cap that had been collecting some of the oil, forcing BP to remove it for about 10 hours and leaving the flow into the Gulf unchecked. However, there’s been only one other problem in two months, despite their demanding tasks. The most popular remote-operated vehicle is known as the “ROV”and is being used in the project. It’s 11.5 feet long and weighs 8,000 pounds. It has human-like arms and its wrists can work continuously like a drill.Jeffrey Harris,an employee from Oceaneering International Inc,which provided about 14 robots to work in the Gulf, said,“It’s like a construction worker, but it is doing one of the most demanding jobs in the world.”1.According to the passage, undersea robots are being used to ________.A.take photos along the seaside beachB.do experiments on deep-sea pressureC.collect as much of the oil from the oil well as possibleD.help stop the oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico2.What do we know from the passage?A.Undersea robots play an important role in stopping the flow of oil.B.An undersea robot in the Gulf of Mexico weighs 1,000 pounds.C.Undersea robots can do whatever they are asked to.D.The Deepwater Horizon is also an undersea robot.3.Which of the following statements is NOT true about the “ROV”?A.It is doing a difficult job.B.It weighs 5,000 pounds.C.It’s just like a construction worker.D.It’s a popular remote-operated robot.4.What is the passage mainly about?A.An accident that happened in the Gulf of Mexico.B.Human beings’ new relationship with robots.C.A wonderful job done by a team of undersea robots.D.The “ROV”,a popular human-like robot on sale.7、介绍一款时尚手机,要点如下:1. 高科技产品;国内外广泛使用;2. 主要功能:通话、发短信、上网、照相、玩游戏等;3. 体积小、重量轻、易携带,适用于各年龄段人群。

At the time, a few science fiction magazines began to introduce this author, and to translate a few pieces from his “Robot Series”. Of Asimov’s works, the one that left the deepest impression on me was Pebble in the Sky. This novel directly influenced my early science fiction writing. Asimov was one of the leading writers of western science fiction’s Golden Age, so although his writing may not have a direct influence on writers of today, his underlying (潜在的) influence on many levels is undeniable—the famous Three Laws of Robotics, and many classic writing techniques, for example. Asimov’s novels are marked by a fully integrated (完整的) logical system, and his stories are a pleasure to read. This is the reason his novels still attract readers today. Naturally, western science fiction has few people these days who follow Asimov’s creative methods. But still the majority of Chinese science fiction readers would rather read the classic works of Asimov.Compared with the “Robot Series”, Asimov’s “Foundation Series” is a little less well-known in China. In fact, the “Foundation Series” creates an entire world, even grander than that of the “Robot Series”; this science fiction had a direct influence on later western science fiction, and the most famous example us Star Wars.56. We learn from the passage that the writer is probably a ________.A. science fiction writerB. science fiction publisherC. high school studentD. science fiction fan57. The purpose of the passage is to ________.A. compare Asimov with other science fiction writersB. advise people to read Asimov’s storiesC. give some comments on Asimov’s influenceD. explain why Asimov is popular in China58. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Asimov is criticized by today’s science fiction writers.B. Asimov still has many readers in China.C. Asimov wrote Star Wars in his later life.D. Asimov’s writing techniques are still widely used.59. In the writer’s opinion, Asimov’s “Foundation Series” ________.A. was not as successful as his “Robot Series”B. is better known to readers than his “Robot Series”C. was more logically organize d than his “Robot Series”D. was written better tha n his “Robot Series” in some waysBTuesday October 23 11:00 amWorld Tree Day; World Tree CuisineFor World Tree Day, Snook gives out badges (徽章) to everyone who is nice to the tree, but Bob can’t think of what to do — until he comes up with a song. Huge it was, like a great shining rocket.Grandfather looked at it. “Lost their way, maybe,” he said. Then he felt in his pocket and took out a card and put it in my hand. “Run you, Bronwen,” he said, “and give them the business card of Uncle Space-Ship-Repairs Jones.”But I was frightened, being a little girl then. So Dai, my father, started up the tractor (拖拉机) without a word, and rode off to fetch Uncle Space-Ship-Repairs Jones.Down to the farm came the Moon Men, as the newspapers called them, their helmets bright in the moonlight, and soon my father arrived. My uncle was sitting on the tractor with him, carrying a great spanner (扳手) and soon his banging and hammering (捶打) came across the still air from Ten Acre. After about 15 minutes we heard Uncle Space-Ship-Repairs Jones saying that the Moon-Ship was now right. The Moon Men all set off for Ten Acre.“I will come and see you off,” said Grandfather, and we watched him walk up the hill with the men. With a great roar (怒号), the Moon-Ship rose into the sky, and climbed among the stars. Soon we could see it no more.“Supper now,” said Gran. “Where is Grandfather?” “Gone to talk to the old bull, maybe,” said Gran.Silently my father picked up the lantern (灯笼) and went out into the fields.64. Apples have a lot of nutritional value!A medium sized apple has only 80 calories (卡). What a great snack choice! Not only is an apple low in calories, they contain absolutely no fat. Thus, eating apples as snacks, as opposed to chips or cakes, will help reduce the risk of cancer. On top of reducing the risk of cancer, the low sodium (钠) amounts in apples also help reduce high blood pressure and heart disease. They are cholesterol (胆固醇) free. They are also rich in vitamin A, which helps strengthen vision (视力) along with bone and tooth development. Now that we know the nutritional facts, let’s take a look at some of the fun facts—That’s right! Apples can be fun, as well as healthy! If an apple is fresh, it will float on water. Twenty-five percent of an apple is air, thus allowing it to float. Can you imagine bobbing (上下浮动) for apples that sink? And, did you know that an apple is covered with a natural layer of wax (蜡)? That’s what the peeling (剥下的皮) is. It protects the apple’s high water content, keeping the apple fresh. Apples are a very important part of a healthy diet, but keep in mind they can be fun. And always remember, if an apple sinks in water, pick another one to bob for!68. How many kinds of facts about apples are mentioned in the passage?A. Two.B. Three.C. Four.D. Five.69. Scientists in England have built a series of small robots that get their energy from dead flies, rotten apples, or sugar. One robot, called Slugbot, was even designed to hunt garden insects for dinner! Well, scientists at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory want to invent robots that can operate for long periods of time in dark, dirty, or dangerous places. Many of those spots, like the seafloor (海底) or Antarctica, don’t have electrical sockets (插座). So inventor Chris Melhuish came up with a better idea: Build robots that get their energy just like animals do by hunting and eating food from their environment. The robots digest their food in a series of stomach-like devices (装置) called microbial (微生物的) fuel cells that are full of bacteria! The bacteria do the real eating, munching dead flies or other food fed into the fuel cells. As the bacteria eat up the food, they release electrons (电子). Electrons are charged particles (粒子) that flow to form electricity. One robot, called Ecobot II, could run for 12 days on a diet of eight flies! Melhuish says his team is now working on a new and improved robot, called Ecobot III, which will have a better digestion system. It seems that after an eight-fly dinner, Ecobot II couldn’t get rid of the leftover (剩余的)“waste”. Maybe restrooms in the future will have signs for boys, girls, and robots.72. Robots invented by the Bristol Robotics Laboratory ________.A. work for humans like some animalsB. can work in no-electricity situations for along timeC. can produce electricity from the seaD. hunt small animals for food in dangerous places73. The underlined word “munching” probably means________.A. huntingB. killingC. chewingD. catching74. Compared to Ecobot II, Ecobot III will ________.A. work longer with less electricityB. have more microbial fuel cellsC. eat less but work longerD. get more energy from what it eats75. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Dead Flies Power Flesh-eating Robot.B. Small Robots, Big Effects.C. A Long Way to Go to Improve Robots.D. Not so long ago, most people didn’t know who Shelly Ann Francis Pryce was going to become. She was just an average high school athlete. There was every indication that she was just another American teenager without much of a future. However, one person wants to change this. Stephen Francis observed then eighteen-year-old Shelly Ann at a track meet and was convinced that he hadseen the beginning of true greatness. Her times were not exactly impressive, but even so, he seemed there was something trying to get out, something the other coaches had overlooked when they had assessed her and found her lacking. He decided to offer Shelly Ann a place in his very strict training seasons. Their cooperation quickly produced results, and a few year later at Jamaica’s Olympic games in early 2008, Shelly Ann, who at that time only ranked number 70 in the world, beat Jamaica’s unchallenged q ueen of the sprint(短跑).“Where did she come from?” asked an astonished sprinting world, before concluding that she must be one of those one-hit wonders that spring up from time to time, only to disappear again without signs. But Shelly Ann was to prove that she was anything but a one-hit wonder. At the Beijing Olympic she swept away any doubts about her ability to perform consistently by becoming the first Jamaican woman ever to win the 100 meters Olympic gold. She did it again one year on at the World Championship in Briton, becoming world champion with a time of 10.73--- the fourth record ever. Shelly-Ann is a little woman with a big smile. She has a mental toughness that did not come about by chance. Her journey to becoming the fastest woman on earth has been anything but smooth and effortless. She grew up in one of Jamaica’s toughest inner-city communities known as Waterhouse, where she lived in a one-room apartment, sleeping four in a bed with her mother and two brothers. Waterhouse, one of the poorest communities in Jamaica, is a really violent and overpopulated place. Several of Shelly-Ann's friends and family were caught up in the killings; one of her cousins was shot dead only a few streets away from where she lived. Sometimes her family didn’t have e nough to eat. She ran at the school championships barefooted because she couldn’t afford shoes. Her mother Maxime, one of a family of fourteen, had been an athlete herself as a young girl but, like so many other girls in Waterhouse, had to stop after she had her first baby. Maxime’s early entry into the adult world with its responsibilities gave her the determination to ensure that her kids would not end up in Waterhouse's roundabout of poverty. One of the first things Maxime used to do with Shelly-Ann was taking her to the track, and she was ready to sacrifice everything. It didn't take long for Shelly-Ann to realize that sports could be her way out of Waterhouse. On a summer evening in Beijing in 2008, all those long, hard hours of work and commitment finally bore fruit. The barefoot kid who just a few years previously had been living in poverty, surrounded by criminals and violence, had written a new chapter in the history of sports. But Shelly-Ann’s victory was far greater than that. The night she won Oly mpic gold in Beijing, theroutine murders in Waterhouse and the drug wars in the neighbouring streets stopped. The dark cloud above one of the world’s toughest criminal neighbourhoods simply disappeared for a few days. “ I have so much fire burning for my country,”Shelly said. She plans to start a foundation for homeless children and wants to build a community centre in Waterhouse. She hopes to inspire the Jamaicans to lay down their weapons. She intends to fight to make it a woman’s as well as a man’s world. As Muhammad Ali puts it, “ Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them. A desire, a dream, a vision.” One of the things Shelly-Ann can be proud of is her understanding of this truth.1. Why did Stephen Francis decide to coach Shelly-Ann?A. He had a strong desire to free her family from trouble.B. He sensed a great potential in her despite her weaknesses.C. She had big problems maintaining her performance.D. She suffered a lot of defeats at the previous track meets.2. What did the sprinting world think of Shelly-Ann before the 2008 Olympic Games?A. She would become a promising star.B.
