Unit 3 Inventors and inventions【美文阅读】Wireless charging for mobile phones by

Fujitsu,a Japanese technology company, has created a system capable of simultaneously(同时地) charging many portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras and laptops without the need for cable(电缆)connections.Electric car users may also eventually be able to charge their vehicles wirelessly using the same technology according to Fujitsu, which displayed a model system at an Institute of Electronics,Information and Communication Engineers conference.Claiming to be the world's first of its kind, the technology works on the basis of the transmission of electricity using magnetic(磁的)fields between the charger and the electronic device. The system makes it possible to charge wirelessly at distances of up to several meters, and Fujitsu aims to provide public “charging spots”on the streets in order to provide easy charging day and night.Scientists at Fujitsu Laboratories are planning to commercially sell products combining the new wireless charging system as early as 2012.Mobile phone users in Japan can currently charge their batteries using portable battery devicesavailable at most train stations and convenience stores-although phone companieswarn this can damage the phones. The new system invented by Fujitsu, however,is much more advanced and represents the next generation of portable recharging systems using flexible wireless technology. The company added,“We are also looking at applying the results of this work to fields other than portable electronics, including power transmission between circuit boards(电路板) or computer chips, and providing mobile charging systems for electric cars.”【诱思导学】1.How does the wireless charging technology work?____________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】It works on the basis of the transmission of electricity using magnetic fields between the charger and the electronic device.2.When can consumers probably buy products using the new wireless charging system?______________________________________________【答案】

unit3 Inventors and inventionsⅠ. AToday, bicycles are elegantly simple machines that are common around the world. Many people ride bicycles for recreation, whereas others use them as a means of transportation. The first bicycle was invented in Germany in 1818. Because it was made of wood, it wasn’t very strong nor did it have pedals (脚踏板). Riders moved it by pushing their feet against the ground. In 1839, Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a Scottish blacksmith, invented a much better bicycle. Macmillan’s machine had iron-covered wheels to keep them from getting worn down. He also used foot-operated levers, similar to pedals, so his bicycle could be ridden at a quick pace. It didn’t look much like the modern bicycle, though, because its back wheel was substantially larger than its front wheel. Although Macmillan’s bicycles could be ridden easily, they were never produced in large numbers. In 1861, Frenchman Pierre Michaux and his brother Ernest invented a bicycle with an improved pedal mechanism. They called their bicycle a VELOCIPEDE, but most people called it a “bone shaker” because of the effect of the wood and iron frame. Despite the impolite nickname, the VELOCIPEDE was a hit. After a few years, the Michaux family was making hundreds of the machines annually, mostly for fun-seeking young people.Ten years later, James Starley, an English inventor, made several innovations that revolutionized bicycle design. He made the front wheel many times larger than the back wheel, put a gear on the pedals to make the bicycle more efficient, and lightened the wheels by using wire spokes. Although this bicycle was much lighter and less tiring to ride, it was still clumsy, extremely top-heavy, and ridden mostly for entertainment. It wasn’t until 1874 that the first truly modern bicycle appeared on the scene. Invented by another Englishman, H. J. Lawson, the safety bicycle would look familiar to today’s cyclists. The safety bicycle had equal-sized wheels, which made it easier to ride. Lawson also attached a chain to the pedals to drive the back wheel. By 1893, the safety bicycle had been further improved with air-filled rubber tires, a diamond-shaped frame, and easy braking. With the improvements provided by Lawson; bicycles became extremely popular and useful for transportation. Today, they are built, used, and enjoyed all over the world.1.This passage was most likely written in order to ________.A.compare bicycles used for different purposesB.describe the problems early bicycle makers experiencedC.persuade readers to use bicycles for transportationD.tell readers about the early history of the bicycle解析:选D推理判断题。

第6讲Inventors and inventions 语法篇____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________1.

The sleeping boy is my son.The excited people rushed into the building.A lost opportunity never returns. He is a retired worker.(2)分词短语作定语,分词后置;分词修饰不定代词something等要后置;个别分词如give,left等作定语也后置。

如:The girl standing under the tree is my niece. The building built last year is our library. This is the question given.

Most of the people invited to the party were famous scientists2、作表语如今分词作表语多表示主语具有的特征,过去分词作表语多指主语所处的状态。

如:The film is touching. The glass is broken. She looked tired with cooking. He remained standing beside the table.3、作宾语补足语分词和不定式一样,在一些感官动词或使役动词后作宾语补足语。

如:I smell something burning.I heard him singing the song.I heard my name called.I can’t make myself understood in English.I found my car missing.I’ll have my watch repaired.

generally speaking 一般说来talking of (speaking of) 说到strictly speaking 严格地说judging from 从···判断all things considered 从整体来看taking all things into consideration 全面看来。

如:Judging from his face, he must be ill.

Generally speaking, dogs can run faster than pigs.

Arriving there, they found the boy dead.

Having finished his homework, he went out for a walk. After he had finished his homework, he went out for a walk.

He is the man giving you/who gave you the book他就是给你书的那个人She is the girl stopped by/who was stopped by the car.

像:gone, fallen, retired, grown-up, escaped, faded,returned等词。

如:a retired person 一个退休的人 a fallen ball 一个落下来的球a burnt-out match 烧完了的火柴二.

A. promoteB. promotedC. promotingD. to promote答案: B解析: 此题考察的非谓语动词的固定搭配“get+过去分词〞,如“get burnt〞被烫伤,get paid获得报酬;本句中的get promoted获得提拔。

2.〔2021福建卷〕For those with family members far away, the personal computer and the phone areimportant in staying________.A. connectedB.connectingC.to connectD.to be connected答案: A解析: 系动词stay/get后面经常接过去分词转换的形容词,如get paid获得报酬。

故A正确。

3.〔2021四川卷〕The manager was satisfied to see many new products ______ after great effort.A. having developedB. to developC. developedD. develop答案: C解析: 此题考察的是过去分词developed作感官动词see的宾语many new products的补足语,因为develop与宾语products间为被动关系,故使用过去分词。

4.〔2021陕西卷〕Back from his two-year medical service in Africa, Dr. Lee was very happy to see his mother________good care of at home.A. takingB. takenC. takeD. be taken答案: B解析: 本句考察的是非谓语动词做宾语补足语的用法。

5.〔2021浙江卷〕Annie Salmon, disabled, is attended throughout her school days by a nurse _______ to guard her.A. to appointB.appointingC. appointedD. having appointed答案: C解析: 本句中的动词appoint任命与前面的名词nurse之间构成逻辑上的被动关系,所以使用过去分词短语appointed to guard her做定语来修饰前面的名词nurse。
