But recently researchers have found that these whales are on the move and they have migrated from California waters to areas off Canada and Alaska for the first time since commercialwhaling ended in 1965.The researchers identified 15 blue whales that have appeared off the coast of BritishColumbia and the Gulf of Alaska since 1997. Four of these whales were recognized as ones that were once sighted off California shores, suggesting that the whales are returning to an old migration pattern between the coasts. Before commercial whaling began in the early 1900s, blue whales were found widely throughout the North Pacific and California waters. But from the 1920s to the 1960s, whaling severely reduced the whale populations. Blue whales never recovered in the Northern Pacific, making sightings in this area rare. However, much larger groups of whales have been observed close to California since the 1970s.The scientists had previously thought that the California population was separate from the population that had historically lived in North Pacific waters. But the current study shows that whales off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska are likely partof the California population. To identify the blue whales, the researchers looked at photos of cetaceans taken in the North Pacific Ocean and compared them with a library of blue whale pictures taken along the West Cost of the United States and Southern Pacific. Up to now, the researchers arenot quite sure why the whales are changing their migration patterns, but they suspect that the whales may be following their food moving farther north by the changes in ocean conditions.28. According to the passage, blue whales are .A. following a fixed route of migrationB. dying out due to commercial whalingC. moving from the south to the northD. rarely found in the Southern Pacific29. The whale population in the northern Pacific .A. is different from the California populationB. is probably part of the California populationC. has become the largest group since the 1970sD. has lived there since the 1960s30. The underlined word "cetaceans" in Paragraph 5 probably means .A. land creaturesB. whale speciesC. ocean conditionsD. migration patterns31. What might make blue whales migrate according to the researchers?A. Commercial whaling.B. Weather conditions.C. Life reproduction.D. Food resources.DWhen slaves were first brought over from West Africa to the southern parts of America, they brought along with them aspects of their own culture-religion, dance, language, music, and cuisine. A mix of the two cultures eventually appeared. Thereligious dance of the ring shout turned into modern dances like the Charleston, and tribal chants slowly transformed into sorrowful hymns (圣歌) sung by slaves that described their hardships. These soulful accounts by slaves of the severe climate and conditions began to be called "the blues" , which continued in popularity among African Americans after the Civil War. This music increased in popularity into the early 1900s when many black musicians became an important part of the music industry. The slaves that had been brought over were from all different regions of West Africa, but they worked together until they gradually formed a common culture. This strengthenedthe identity of their music that, in the 1950s, eventually led to the beginning of rock androll. The Beatles, the most influential band of the 1960s, are often determined as the acceleraior that resulted in the ideology (意识形态)surrounding music that is still around today. The frcedom and individuality associated with that time period brought forth awhole culture surrounding music. It was not just music any more, but a lifestyle.Ovcr the dccadcs, music has developed into such a vital part of society and popculture. Musicians arc glorified, with tons of adoring and screaming fans. The modern technology of present day has allowed for a greater gap betwcen the creator of the musicand the fans, as well as a widespread commercialization of music. However, criticisms of modern pop music often arise due to its mass production, and now there is a lack of thesame soul and quality of naturalness and simplicity in music that was rising in the early20th century.32. What contributed to the birth of the Charleston?A. Various African religions.B. People's love of tribal dances.C.A mix of two different cultures.D. The popularity of sorrowful hymns.33. According to the passage, what can we learn about the blues?A. It became popular in the late 20th century.B. It may include the description of slaves' sad lives.C. It mainly told the stories of the American Civil War.D. It reflected the hard lives of many black musicians.34. What does the underlined word "this” in the third paragraph refer to?A. 2016年安徽省合肥市某校高考英语三模试卷含答案
2016年安徽省合肥市某校高考英语三模试卷第二部分阅读理解(共两节)第一节(满分30分)1. Not too big, not too small. Not too hot, not too cold. A newly discovered planet looks just right for life as we know it, according to an international group of astronomers.Circling a star about 500 light years away, the planet called Kepler﹣186f is about the same size as Earth. It goes round its star at the right distance for liquid water on the surface. That is a necessary condition for life. But it is not exactly like Earth, it's more of an Earth's cousin. It's not an Earth's twin. It shares the same characteristics as Earth, but their parent stars are very different.Kepler﹣186f circles a star that is smaller and cooler than our sun. But the planet appears to be a closer relative than most of the hundreds of others discovered so far. Some are huge gas﹣covered giants with thick atmospheres. Others circle too closely to their stars and are too hot for life. For the first time, we can actually say we now have a planet that is both Earth﹣sized and circles in its star's livable zone. The next step would be to look for signs of life in the atmospheres of these distant world. That would take a more advanced telescope. But budget cuts threaten that task, says University of California at Los Angeles astrophysicist Ben."In theory, we could do this in the next couple decades. But in practice, because there's no money, it's not going to happen. It's not going to happen in my lifetime, for example, '' said Ben. However, NASA's Elisa Quintana believes that when the next﹣generation space telescope is used, it will find that we are not alone in the universe. In the meantime, the search continues for other worlds where life may find a home.(1) What do we know about the newly discovered planet?________A It was discovered by chance.B It has some form of life on it.C It has suitable conditions for life.D It is an ordinary planet like others..(2) The difference between the Earth and Kepler﹣186f is________.A they circle different parent starsB they came into being at different timesC they move in space at a different speedD they orbit their stars at a different distance.(3) The discovery of Kepler﹣186f is remarkable because________.A man has discovered a new homeB it caused people's interest in theuniverse C man has found a familiar planet like the Earth D it can help man know more about the Earth.(4) What does Ben worry about in the future research?________A Lack of money.B No cooperation.C His coming old age.D His weak influence.2. Whenever we think of change, we tend to think of something that's potentially going to push our lives into a period of uncertainty.Without exception, just the word "change" has the power to create a feeling of anxiety or insecurity and when you put the word "lifestyle" in front of it, people often feel that they arefaced with an unachievable task.Simply knowing that it would be in your best interests to lose weight and get fitter doesn't necessarily mean you are going to act upon it, because it can feel like you are standing at the bottom of the mountain looking up at the summit. The journey seems long and hard and you get the sense that if you start it, you would bite off far more than you could chew!Of course, it's good to have an idea about your targets, but that doesn't mean you have to make the entire journey in one go. Change is frequently more acceptable and far more achievable when it is taken in bite﹣sized pieces. Change doesn't have to be something you're always going to start, it's something you can start right now. A number of small changes that require minor adjustments to your life can work together to cause much bigger change overall. For example, say you allow yourself one can of soda a day. It doesn't sound a lot, does it? But over a year that one can of soda adds up to you consuming over 60, 000calorie and over 2, 000 teaspoon of sugar. Cut out that one can a day and replace it with a bottle of water, something which is far more beneficial to your health, and over the course of the year you could effectively lose 8kilos.Losing weight and gaining health for good is all about making a change to your mind. That's the control centre for everything and if your mind isn't filled with too much change all in one go, it can develop new habits far more effectively.Small change ________ a chain reaction. It makes you believe in yourself and there will come the moment when you realize you're actually half way up the mountain looking back at how far you've come!(1) Why may people not take action even if they know losing weight does them good?________A Because they may feel it unachievable.B Because they won't change their lifestyle.C Because they can't stick to change for long.D Because they have no clear idea about their targets..(2) The example mentioned in Paragraph 4 is used to show that________.A change is more achievable when taken in one goB change has to be what one always wants to startC even small changes require life adjustmentsD even small changes can bring big gains.(3) What is losing weight and gaining health for good all about?________A Gaining self﹣belief.B Changing one's mind.C Controlling one's appetite.D Getting a sense of success..(4) The underlined word "originates" in the last paragraph can be best replaced by"________".A requiresB delaysC createsD affects.3. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently surprised Chinese students when he spoke to them in Chinese. In a speech at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Zuckerberg spoke Chinese for about 30 minutes. With Chinese having the most native speakers in the world and the study of the Chinese language increasing rapidly around the world, Zuckerberg's talk raises a question: Is Chinese the language of the future? Could it replace English as the world's international language?Chinese will grow in importance, especially for people who want to work and do business in China. But I don't think Chinese will replace English any time soon.American movies, music, television, video games have wider audiences, which is one reason for English's popularity as a foreign language. So far China's success in this aspect has been very limited. Chinese films, Chinese television shows and Chinese music don't have a huge following outside of China. In addition, English is seen as a more neutral(中立的) language than Chinese. Unlike Chinese, English is not associated with one county. It is a universal language and is spoken in more than 170 counties. In2014, China hosted the Asia﹣Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Beijing, China. But the meeting was not in Chinese. The official language of APEC is English. The most important reason is that Chinese is a more difficult language to learn. It is estimated that it would take a native English speaker 2, 000 hours to reach professional fluency in Chinese. That is four times longer than it would take to reach the same level in Dutch, French, or Spanish. While Chinese grammar is much simpler, Chinese has a tone and writing system that is more difficult for adult learners to master.Last but not least, more people learn English than Chinese. A recent survey by Gallup showed that only one in four Americans is multilingual, which means only 25% of Americans can speak a foreign language besides English. For most Americans, learning a foreign language is a choice, not a necessity. China Daily has estimates that 400 million Chinese are studying English. That means China has more English learners that the U.S. has English speakers.(1) Mark Zuckerberg surprised Chinese students by________.A singing Chinese songsB wearing Chinese clothesC making a speech in ChineseD speaking highly of Chinese.(2)Which of the following contributes to English's popularity as a foreign language?________A American growing economy.B American pop culture.C American freedom of speech.D American education system..(3) What is the text mainly about?________A The results pop culture development brings about.B The influence English has on the global economy.C The suggestions on how to master Chinese in a short time.D The reasons why English would be more popular than Chinese.第二节(满分10)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.5.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Australian marine life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world's reefs are considered healthy. This statistic is depressing, so it's important forms to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete eco-system has led me to take action. The final painting in the series was cut into two before World War II."After a fierce bidding battle between a number of buyers in the room and on the telephone, the painting finally was sold to a collector for $80. 4 million, setting a new world record price for the artist at auction," said Olivier Camu, a scholar of impressionist art.The last record for a Monet work was set in May when Le Pont du chemin de fer a Argenteuil sold for $41.4 million. The painting sold Tuesday was bought at a 1971 New York auction for $ 320,000. Our need for closure is our natural preference for definite answers over confusion and uncertainty. Every person has their own baseline level of need for closure. It likely evolved via natural selection. What I find really fascinating is how our need for closure is affected by the situationwe're in. Our need for closure rises when we have to act rather than just observe, and it matters much more when we're rushed, or bored, or tired. Any stress can make our discomfort with uncertainty increase, and a high need for closure negatively influences some of our most important decisions: who we decide to trust, whether we admit we're wrong and even how creative we are.In hiring, for instance, a high need for closure leads people to put far too much weight on their first impression. It's called the Urgency Effect. In one experiment, psychologists tried to lower people's need for closure by telling them, right before participants are about to make various judgments of a job candidate, that they'll be responsible in some way for them, or that their judgments have serious consequences. In making any big decision, it's not enough just to know that we should take our time. We all know that important decisions shouldn't be rushed. The problem is that we don't keep that advice in mind when it matters. So, one of the best solutions is to formalize the reminders. Before making important decisions, write down not just advantages and disadvantages butwhat the consequences could be. Also, think about how much pressure you're under. If your need for closure is particularly high that day, it's even more important to think twice.32. How does "need for closure" probably come into being?A. By nature.B. By accident.C. By acquiring.D. By imitating.33. It can be inferred that a high need for closure_____.A. brings about more stressB. causes discomfort and uncertaintyC. leads to not so good decisionsD. promotes one's creativity34. In the experiment the psychologists reduced participants ' need for closure by telling them to_____.A. be cautious about their judgmentsB. value their first impressionC. be responsible for their bossD. pay little attention to the consequences35. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?A Another strategy to escape the pressures of modern life.B.Some serious consequences of making decisions.C.Other approaches to making important decisions.D.More helpful solutions to high need for closure.
