目前发现最早的石刻为隋开皇七年（587）《刘景茂造象记》。

《续修历城县志·金石考》记载有隋代造像题记10种，最晚为开皇十五年（595）《女花仁造象题字》。

唐至北宋时期的500年间，除了宋代《太平寰宇记》将县南五里之山称作“历山”，明代《历乘》记载唐贞观年间建“兴国寺”外，再无对千佛山的文献描述，此时期的千佛山一直寂寂无闻。

很可能是唐代兴国寺建成后，寺院毁于唐“武宗灭佛”事件或是唐末的兵火中。

据明成化七年（1471）《重建千佛山寺永远千年碑》记载：“传隋唐间曾建寺，厥后兵燹废弛，殿堂蓁芜，无存一砖一瓦”。

宋曾巩《齐州二堂记》所述之“历山”也似乎并不是指千佛山。

“今泺上之北堂，其南则历山也，故名之曰‘历山之堂’。

……今泺上之南堂，其西南则泺水之所出也，故名之曰泺源之堂。

”在这里，曾巩描述的方位很明确，“泺源”在泺源堂之西南，“历山”在历山堂之南。
