英文多用头韵，汉语喜工整对仗。
将一段文字优美、生动形象的英文译成有相应效果的汉语，适当的使用汉语的四字格是一个行之有效的办法。
文章主要谈及了中文四字结构的特点、构成及其在英汉互译中的运用。

不同的语言有不同的体系。
根据索绪尔的符号学理论，不同的语言中所指与受指的关系是任意的；加上诸如文化渊源、历史传统、风俗习惯等因素的不同。
这种语言的差异性表现得越来越突出。
而且原语与译语之间的结构差异越大，其间的互译性就越差。
原语和译语的固有形态不一迫使我们在进行翻译时为了内容上的表现而不得不进行形式上的改变，从而使原文内涵表现得更精致淋漓，译语更加自然流畅。
汉英分属两大不同的语系。
汉语是象形文字而英语是一种拼音文字。
要在这两种不同的语际间进行成功切换，这对翻译者来说不是一件容易的事情。
因为英语中多习惯结构和搭配，而汉语则多用四字格。

将一段文字优美、生动形象的英文译成有相应效果的汉语，适当的使用汉语的四字格是一个行之有效的办法。
四字词组是经常出现在汉语语言表达的一种描写形式。
一般说来，它涵义深刻，构型短小，表现力强。
假若对它的翻译不准确或是望文生义，则就有可能使原文丧失了四字词组的特点和生动性，或使句子显得累赘、臃肿，甚至让读者不知所云。
著名的翻译家奈达(Nida)曾经指出：“语言是文化的一部分，任何文本的意义都直接或间接地反映一个相应的文化，词语的意义最终也只能在其相应的文化中找到。
”“文化的不同几乎很自然地体现在语言上的不同。
这一点，我们可以用一些成功的译例来说明。
在托马斯·哈代的代表作《苔丝》中，有这么一段描写乡下姑娘苔丝的文字：She was so modest, so expressive, she had looked so soft in herthin white gown that he felt he had acted too foolishly.有人译为“她是如此的谦逊，如此的充满着感情；在单薄的衣服下显得如此柔软，以致于使他觉得他的行为太冒失了”。
英语翻译四字格
历年中高口译考试笔试阶段的汉译英部分都会出现四字格的翻译，看到四字格有“如临大敌”的感觉，很多同学束手无策，更有很多考生“缴械投降”。
其实不然，汉语中出现的四字格，很多只是为了读起来上口，并没有太深的寓意，我们要做的是抓住四字格要表达的意思，有准确无误的英文表达出来即可，不必追求“精雕细琢”。
考前希望考生们还是把下面的四字格过一遍，做好量的积累。
考场上碰到意思相近的四字格时尽量套用。
（一）并列关系这种四字结构，前后两个词语属于并列关系，我们只要能够将前后两个词语分别译成相应的英语译文，中间用并列连词“and”连接即可。

四字格是汉语特有的一种词汇形式。
四字格的运用增添了诗情画意，或清新隽永，或大气回肠，造就了千古绝唱。
如《岳阳楼记》中“若夫淫雨霏霏，连月不开，阴风怒号，浊浪排空；日星隐曜，山岳潜形；商旅不行，樯倾楫摧；薄暮冥冥，虎啸猿啼。
登斯楼也，则有去国怀乡，忧谗畏讥，满目萧然，感极而悲者矣。
”英译汉的过程中，译者如果能发挥汉语优势，恰当地运用四字格，汉语译文将会朗朗上口，韵律感强。
一、四字格的特征本文探讨的四字格范围较广，包含四字成语和普通四字词组。
这些词语具有节奏美、形式美和意象美的三大特征。
[1]首先，现代汉语双音节词占优势。
正如《文心雕龙》中所说的“偶语易安，奇字难适”。
[2]四字格一般由成双的相似词，同义词或反义词组成，音节和音义的协调搭配，获得铿锵悦耳的节奏美，如：小心谨慎，目瞪口呆，出生入死，厚此薄彼......其次，四字格前后对应的结构形成均衡整齐的形式美，如：无影无踪，一塌糊涂，惊心动魄......再次，四字格浓缩的形式展现无比丰富的内容，具有意象美的特点，如火树银花，花容月貌，沉鱼落雁，沧海桑田，秋水伊人......由于四字格這些独特的优势，中国文人说话写作时都会使用四字格来增加文采，更好地表达自己的情感。
译者亦是如此，经常会在翻译时下意识地使用四字格。
由此引来四字格在英译汉中的是与非。
二、四字格的巧妙运用一般情况下，译者情不自禁地使用四字格在汉语译文中。
在散文中，尤其是四字格的连用，使得译文读来悦耳动听，很有文学意境。
例1： Where he faced us again， he was huge and handsome and conceited and cruel.再次面对我们时，他已变得身材魁梧、相貌英俊、心高气傲、冷酷无情。
例2： The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny， with the fresh warmth of a ful-summer day； the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.6月27日上午，天气晴朗，阳光明媚，鲜花盛开，绿草如茵，充满了盛夏之日的清新和温暖。

一、读者接受理论与英汉文学翻译读者接受理论，又称接受美学，是1960年代5位德W 学者在德W 南部新建的康 斯坦茨大学提出来的丙方文学研究中一种新兴的方法论。
代表人物有汉斯罗伯特 姚斯(Hans Robert Jauss)和沃尔夫冈伊瑟尔(Wolfgang Iser)。
它的核心是 从受众出发，从接受出发，强调读者或者阅读行为在阐释文本问题上的作用， 认为在文学阐释中，最重要的因素不是文本，而是读者。
这种理论注意到了过去 文学理论所忽视的一个基本事实，那就是文学作品是为读者阅读所创作的，它 的社会意义和美学价值只有在阅读中才能表现出来。
而读者在文木的接受过程当 中并不是被动的反映，而是主动的，具有推动文学创作的功能。
因此，文学过程 并不能简单地被设想为作家为读者创作作品，读者对文学作品的接受收到个人 的各种因素的影响。
这一文学批评理论也给翻译学和翻译研宄提供了新的视角。
翻译研宄不再仅仅局限于对源语文木、译语文木的研宄，而是把视野扩大到译 者、读者、文化对翻译活动的影响，提出了格的使用为例以隗静秋译《动物庄园》 川大学锦城学院接受美学视角的翻译理论。

本文从四字格自身的特点出发，简要分析了四字格在英译汉中的运用，并概括了翻译中使用四字格需注意的几个问题。

英语为形态语，以形统意，是用严密的形态变化来表现语法范畴和语义信息的。
而汉语为非形态语言，以意统形，句子的语法、句法和语义信息主要通过语言环境和语言的内在关系来表现。
因此，在具体的运用当中，英语的重点体现在结构上，而汉语则重点体现在搭配上。
汉语搭配的形式很多，主要是词与词的搭配，而在词组搭配当中，汉语四字格的使用是最重要也是最实用的一种。
四字格通俗的讲，是四字短语或词组，既指惯常使用的，约定俗成的四字短语，尤其是四字成语，又可指临时根据语境需要组合而成的四字词组。
在英译汉时如果能够恰当使用四字格，会令人感觉气势非凡，节奏紧凑，丝丝入扣，使译文达到锦上添花的效果。
一、四字格的特点四字格词语是汉语词汇的一大特点，也是一种常见的语言现象。
它一般是由分成前后两个部分的四个语素构成。
从语法关系看，词组中前后两个部分可以是主谓、动宾、偏正或者并列关系。
从结构上看，四字词组可分为自由词组和固定词组。
自由词组是临时组成的，可以随意拆散，重新组合，例如：“品种齐全”、“做工精细”、“市场繁荣”、“经济发展”等。
而固定词组则是一个整体，不能拆散使用，其中的任何词语都不能随意更换，含有特殊意义，所以也被称为成语，其基本特征是长期习用性、语义完整性和结构固定性。
如：“死里逃生”、“沧海一粟”、“口蜜腹剑”、“明哲保身”等。
但是需要注意的是，尽管四字词组有自由词组和固定词组之分，但由于汉语词汇浩如烟海，可以组合和搭配的四字词组难以计数，而且有些是一种约定俗成的语言形式，有时很难分清某些四字词组是自由组合还是固定搭配。

二、 四字格的定义与构成 1987年，马国凡第一次较为清晰地定义了四字 格。他认为四字格跨越词与语两大类，外部形 态明显简单，是由四个音节组成的语言单位， “但这并不意味着四字格可以是无意义的音节 拼凑”（马国凡，1987）。
四字格主要由两部分组成:一是汉语成语四字格 即四字成语,如明哲保身、口蜜腹剑、魂飞魄散、 老生常谈、斩钉截铁;二是普通四字格, 如简洁明 快、丰富多彩、生动活泼、骄傲自大。成语四字 格是由结构严密,不能随意拆分的成语构成的。
译文a. 她是如此谦逊，如此充满感情；在单薄的衣服 下显得如此柔软，以至于使他觉得他的行为太冒失了。 译文b. 她的态度是那样幽静娴雅，她的神气那样脉脉 含情，她穿着薄薄的白长衫，那样轻柔温软，因此他 觉得，他刚才的所作所为太愚蠢了。
英汉互译中汉语四字结构的应用
英汉互译中汉语四字结构的应用受“中庸”哲学思想的影响，中国人的美学观念中特别强调平衡美，除了大量使用对仗，还大量使用前后两部分并列关系的四字词组，这个结构是汉语一个突出的特点，因为四字结构表意精当、读来琅琅上口，也充分体现了汉语讲求平衡的特征。
然而，译员在进行汉译时也不能刻意追求四字结构的使用，影响目标语质量。
反之，在汉译英中，译员也无须拘泥于来源语，用英文中的形容词、名词或一些特殊结构处理即可。
1大会顺利结束了，但是我们面前的道路是不平坦的，要保持头脑的冷静，形势稍好，尤须兢慎。

备注：汉语并列的成分用顿号或逗号隔开即可，而英语要用and等。
“so as to..”表示目的，意思是使得目标语逻辑清楚，结构简洁，符合英语的表达习惯。
[汉语并列的四字格在翻译中的补译汉语有时使用并列的四字格使得表达更加紧凑、简洁，而在翻译成英语时就需要添加联接词，显现句子关系，即将有内在联系的句子、短语等用连词、从句、不定式、分词、介词等显现内在关系。
