The arugula (芝麻菜)was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away — from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time — but for him, it's more like 12 bones of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished (有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat,” Curtin says.4. What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?A. We pay little attention to food waste.B. We waste food unintentionally at times.C. We waste more vegetables than meat.D. We have good reasons for wasting food.5. What is a consequence of food waste according to the test?A. Moral decline.B. Environmental harm.C. Energy shortage.D. Worldwide starvation.6. What does Curtin’s company do?A. It produces kitchen equipment.B. It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.C. It helps local farmers grow fruits.D. It makes meals out of unwanted food.7. What does Curtin suggest people do?A. Buy only what is needed.B. Reduce food consumption.C. Go shopping once a week.D. Eat in restaurants less often.CThe elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely. The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing, It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. ”“I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.”“It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.”Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.”8. What is the purpose of the project?A. To ensure harmony in care homes.B. To provide part-time jobs for the aged.C. To raise money for medical research.D. To promote the elderly people’s welfare.9. How has the project affected Ruth Xavier?A. She has learned new life skills.B. She has gained a sense of achievement.C. She has recovered her memory.D. She has developed a strong personality.10. What do the underlined words “embark on” mean in paragraph 7?A. Improve.B. Oppose.C. Begin.D. Evaluate.11. What can we learn about the project from the last two paragraphs?A. It is well received.B. It needs to be more creative.C. It is highly profitable.D. It takes ages to see the results.DHuman speech contains more than 2,000 different sounds, from the common “m” and “a” to the rare clicks of some southern African languages. But why are certain sounds more common than others? A ground-breaking, five-year study shows that diet-related changes in human bite led to new speech sounds that are now found in half the world’s languages.More than 30 years ago, the scholar Charles Hockett noted that speech sounds called labiodentals, such as “f” and “v”, were more common in the languages of societies that ate softer foods. Now a team of researchers led by Damián Blasi at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, has found how and why this trend arose. They discovered that the upper and lower front teeth of ancient human adults were aligned (对齐), making it hard to produce labiodentals, which are formed by touching the lower lip to the upper teeth. Later, our jaws changed to an overbite structure (结构), making it easier to produce such sounds. The team showed that this change in bite was connected with the development of agriculture in the Neolithic period. Food became easier to chew at this point. The jawbone didn’t have to do as much work and so didn’t grow to be so large.Analyses of a language database also confirmed that there was a global change in the sound of world languages after the Neolithic age, with the use of “f” and “v” increasing remarkably during the last few thousand years. These sounds are still not found in the languages of many hunter-gatherer people today. This research overturns the popular view that all human speech sounds were present when human beings evolved around 300,000 years ago. ”The set of speech sounds we use has not necessarily remained stable since the appearance of human beings, but rather the huge variety of speech sounds that we find today is the product of acomplex interplay of things like biological change and cultural evolution,“ said Steven Moran, a member of the research team.12. Which aspect of the human speech sound does Damián Blasi’s research focus on?A. Its variety.B. Its distribution.C. Its quantity.D. Its development.13. Why was it difficult for ancient human adults to produce labiodentals?A. They had fewer upper teeth than lower teeth.B. They could not open and close their lips easily.C. Their jaws were not conveniently structured.D. Their lower front teeth were not large enough.14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?A. Supporting evidence for the research results.B. Potential application of the research findings.C. A further explanation of the research methods.D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.15. What does Steven Moran say about the set of human speech sounds?A. It is key to effective communication.B. It contributes much to cultural diversity.C. It is a complex and dynamic system.D. It drives the evolution of human beings.

The mom of five, grandmother of twenty-one and great-grandmother of four still drives now. “I’ve always had a busy lifestyle because, let’s face it, with that many children, you have to be busy,” Edna said. “So, I never really thought about it. That’s just the way I live.” She said she only really began to focus on her fitness in her 60s, when she was forced to retire from her job at a local hospital. She had to face the fact that she was 60.To keep herself busy, Edna began gardening again that she had to abandon due to her busy work. She said she also started going to the gym in her 60s, which she still does every other day. “I have to keep my feet to the fire because it’s cold in the morning in winter, and when it’s snowy or icy out there, I don’t really get enthusiastic about going outside,” she said. “But I make myself do it and mark it on the calendar. So I cannot take any shortcuts.”Edna said she focused on walking at the gym for her cardiovascular (心血管) health and also included lots of weight lifting in her routine to maintain her bone strength. “When in the gym, I don’t try to break any records or compete with anyone else,” Edna said. “I only push myself to do better all the time, and I only compete with myself.”When it came to her age, Edna said the people at the gym didn’t realize she’s 91. She prefers it that way, because when people do realize she’s in her 90s, they’ll surely demand to help her. “I know them well. Don’t see any names you like? How about Evabeth? Even if they themselves aren’t willing to choose such a name, a surprising 94% of respondents admit that made-up baby names are very much “in” these days.Apparently, these parents believe they are helping their kids by selecting a rarer name. The survey noted that 72% of all respondents believe a unique name will help their child stand out from the crowd. Another 2% choose a made-up name for their baby with social media in mind, thinking a more unique name means their child’s social media account will be much easier for potential followers to find. But 16% also believe that a strange name may reflect poorly on the parents.A popular strategy for parents to decide on a name is taking two names that both parents like, and combining them into one name(10%). Another 9% combine the names of older relatives as a way to honor family. Similarly, many parents(30%)are drawing inspiration from popular movies and books. However, the majority of surveyed parents(92%)at least admitted that giving their child an odd name is bound to result in a few drawbacks. For example, two-thirds worry that an odd name will be hard to spell and pronounce, and a third worry that their child’s teachers will judge them based on their unusual name. Of course, for those parents who are confident they’ve picked a winning made-up name, 13% actually worry about other parents stealing their child’s name. 8.How does the author illustrate the new trend?A.By making comparisons.B.By asking questions.C.By listing statistics.D.By stating opinions.9.Why do most parents give their newborns odd names?A.To make their children feel less special.B.To reflect their higher social status.C.To draw others’ attention more easily.D.To attract more followers online. 10.What is most people’s attitude towards the new trend of naming babies?A.It will be advised by teachers.B.It can actually be double-edged.C.It should be protected carefully.D.It surely makes parents confident. 11.What’s the best title for the text?A.Ordinary Names Are Parents’ New Pursuit B.An Odd Name Can Influence One’s Life C.Trendy Names Appear on Social Media D.Newborns’ Unique Names Are ComingDrugs that could save tens of thousands of lives in Britain should be prescribed (开药) to three times as many patients as at present, medical experts recommended after a study showed these drugs have great effects on heart disease and stroke (中风).British research has shown that statins, a class of drug that lowers cholesterol (胆固醇), can prevent a third of all cases of heart disease or stroke in patients at highest risk. If statins were given to 10 million high-risk patients, they could save at least 50,000 lives a year worldwide. In Britain, where heart disease is the leading cause of death, statins could save up to 10,000 lives a year.Studies have found that safety issues surrounding statins were so tiny that they were significant. The risk of muscle problems was only about one in ten thousand. Fears that statins could increase deaths from other diseases, such as cancer, were assuaged by the study. At present, only people with high cholesterol are prescribed statins, but the eight-year study found that anyone at risk of heart disease or stroke could benefit. Statins are now given to fewer than one in twenty people aged over 40, mostly men with heart disease or high cholesterol. Under the recommendation, this would increase to one in eight.A total of 20,000 volunteers aged 40 to 80 took part in the study, which looked at the effects of statins on patients for whom the benefits were uncertain. The guidelines previously said that female patients aged over 65 would not benefit from the drug, but the five years of monitoring alltypes of patients at high risk of heart attacks and stroke showed that everyone benefited as much from statins. The new recommendations will be easy to put into practice because statins are readily available and the patients who benefit from them most are already known to doctors. 12.What does paragraph 2 focus on?A.Main diseases in Britain.B.Side effects caused by statins.C.Positive effects of statins.D.The numbers of heart disease cases. 13.What does the underlined word “assuaged” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Eased.B.Discovered.C.Ignored.D.Compared. 14.What does the five years of monitoring concerning statins show?A.The effects of the drug are unclear.B.The drug can be widely prescribed.C.The drug hardly benefits female patients.D.The drug should be limited in application. 15.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To call for the monitoring of drug studies.B.To explain different ways of testing drugs.C.To seek improvement in the drug research.D.To spread medical experts’recommendation.Self-learning can help you develop important skills and gain valuable knowledge. So-called “bad kids” can leave their reputations behind at school and forge a better one outdoors. That’s the theory behind the Adventure Therapy program, which a high school counselor has developed to help small groups of students with behavior problems become more confident and socially adapted. The progressive program has seen 16 students go through it in its first two years, according to the founder Mike Reece of George McDougall High School. The former physical education teach er and ski instructor with a master’s degree in psychology has seen troubled teenagers in the program develop healthy social habits before mastering an outdoor skill such as skiing. The program began in the fall of 2008, after Reece convinced school authorities there was a need for outdoor activities to help students struggling with their schooling and exhibiting behavior problems.“These are the kids who might be asked to leave the class, or be suspected of wrongdoings, you know, always getting a hard time in the regular school system,” Reece said. “So I brought them out and had them get involved in the planning. They felt part of the process and they felt special.”Students in the program join a group of seven peers facing similar difficulties every two weeks for an hour of group therapy with Reece over a pizza lunch supplied by the school. The pizza’s nice, but the program’s real point is the monthly outdoor-activity field trip, led by Reece and another teacher.“I’m trying to expand their horizons and show them that something is out there for them,” Reece said. “A major part of the program is goal-setting and making plans. The overall goal would include fostering a sense of optimism, connectedness, and communicating skills.”36. We can conclude from the passage that the Adventure Therapy program .A. is not supported by the schoolB. does no good to the good kidsC. proves to be successfulD. will be expanded to normal studentsBFamous wildlife artists Robert Bateman and Wyland are challenging American youth to get outdoors and “get to know” their wild neighbors of other species by entering the Get-to-Know contest. Youth aged 5-18 are invited to create art, writing, photography and video entries based on first-hand experiences with nature, which they can submit(提交) at www.gettoknow.ca until November 30, 2010.Bateman and Wyland hope the Get-to-Know contest will inspire youth to build meaningful connections with nature. “The investment we are making by connecting youth with nature is the most important one we can make for this generation,” says Wyland. Youth’s disconnection from nature results from the trend of young Americans spending more time indoors. In 2010, American school-aged youth are spending a shocking 53 hours a week in front of entertainment media screens — up from 44 hours per week in 2004. And while they are aware of global environmental issues like climate change and deforestation in the Amazon, they often cannot name ten different plants and animals in their own backyard. “Caring for this planet begins with getting to know our neighbors of other species”, says Robert Bateman, who started the Get-to-Know contest in Canada in 2000.The theme for the 2010 Get-to-Know contest art, writing and photography entries is “Celebrating Biodiversity”. The all-new video entry has a theme of “This is My Forest”, in honor of 2011 International Year of Forests. The video entry is open to youth from all around the world.Winners will receive “wild” prizes, including a week-long Art & Nature Camp experience at a Canadian national park for those aged 12 and older. Winning art and writing entries will be published in the 2012 Get-to-Know Contest Calendar (日历), and winning video entries will be featured at U.N. International Year of Forests events in 2011.41. There are public and private colleges and universities that offer military ed ucation. But international students can also attend the nation’s five service academies.Three of these come under the Defense Department. The United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, prepares officers for the Army. The Air Force Academy is located at Colorado Springs, Colorado. And the Naval Academy is in Annapolis, Maryland; it prepares officers for the Navy and the Marine Corps.American nominees for these academies must be seventeen to twenty-three years old, unmarried and with no children. Candidates(候选人) are usually nominated by members of Congress. International candidates are nominated by their home governments, which pay for their education. Each government has its own requirements for military service after students graduate. Americans who attend these four-year colleges must serve at least five years of active duty. The Defense Department chooses more than one hundred countries every year and invites them to nominate students to the academies. As many as sixty foreign students may attend each school at any one time. For example, the next class at the Naval Academy will include eighteen foreign students, four of them female. This will bring the total number of foreign students at the Naval Academy to fifty-three.International students can attend the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. The Coast Guard Academy can have thirty-five international students at any one time; the Merchant Marine Academy, thirty. These schools have their own entrance requirements. The Coast Guard Academy says interested students should contact the defense attach at their local United States embassy (大使馆). Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required word limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet. The hole in the Earth’s protective ozone layer (臭氧层) won’t repair itself until about twenty years later than had been expected, scientists said. The ozone layer blocks more than 90 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation (紫外线辐射), helping to make life on the Earth possible. For many years, ozone was depleted (削减) by chlorine and bromine gas in the air. A hole in the ozone layer formed over the Southern Hemisphere.Computer models had forecast that the hole would fill back in by 2050. An improved computer model forecasts the recovery won’t take place until 2068. The model, fed with fresh data from satellites and airplanes, was supported by the fact that it reproduced ozone levels in the Antarctic stratosphere (平流层) over the past 27 years. The ozone hole is actually more of a broad region with less ozone than ought to take place naturally. It is not limited to Antarctica, as is often believed.Over areas that are farther from the poles like Africa or the U.S., the levels of ozone are only three to six percent below natural levels. Over Antarctica, ozone levels are 70 percent lower in the spring. This new method allows us to more accurately estimate (估计) ozone-depleting gases over Antarctica, and how they will decrease over time, reducing the ozone hole area.Paul Newman, a scientist, said that the ozone hole has not started to become smaller as quickly as expected. They think it will not become much smaller until 2018, after which time therecovery should proceed more quickly. And the hole will not be filled in again until 2065. The new study confirms the earlier work Newman and colleagues reported last year, in which they said the hole would n’t replenish until 2065.61. What is the main use of the ozone layer? (D)BWhen Mary Moore began her high school in 1951, her mother told her, "Be sure and take a typing course so when this show business thing doesn't work out, you'll have something to rely on." Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that moment on, "the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course," she recalls. The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growi ng Up Again, did she regret ignoring her morn," I don't know how to use a computer," she admits.Unlike her 1995 autobiography, After All, her second book is less about life as an award-winning actress and more about living with diabetes (糖尿病).All the money from the book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization she serves as international chairman. "I felt there was a need for a book like this," she says."I didn't want to lecture, but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we're self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease."But she hasn't always practiced what she teaches. In her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests s howed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈). Years would pass before she realized she had to grow u p ---again---and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a balanced diet.Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor, she refuses to fall into self-pity. "Everybody on earth can ask, 'why me?' about something or other," she insists. "It doesn't do any good. No one is immune (免疫旳) to heartache, pain, and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I've come to realize the importance of that as I've grown up this second time. I want tospeak out and be as helpful as I can be."61. Why did Mary feel regretful?A. She didn't achieve her ambition.B. She didn't tak e care of her mother.C. She didn't complete her high school.D. She didn't follow her mother's advice. (C)CPeople from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions —and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀旳) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes."We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽视) the mouth."According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our da ta suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less."In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.66. The discovery shows that Westerners .A. pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouthB. consider facial expressions universally reliableC. observe the eyes and the mouth in different waysD. have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions (A)67. What were the people asked to do in the study?A. To make a face at each other.B. To get their faces impressive.C. To classify some face pictures.D. To observe the researchers' faces. (C)68. What does the underlined word "they" in Paragraph 6 refer to?A. The participants in the study.B. The researchers of the study.C. The errors made during the study.D. The data collected from the study. (A)69. In comparison with Westerners, Easterners are likely to .A. do translation more successfullyB. study the mouth more frequentlyC. examine the eyes more attentivelyD. read facial expressions more correctly (C)70. What can be the best title for the passage?A. The Eye as the Window to the SoulB. Cultural Differences in Reading EmotionsC. Effective Methods to Develop Social SkillsD. How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding (B) Part 1V Writing (45 marks)Section A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. An apprenticeship is a form of on-the-job training that combines workplace experience and classroom learning. It can last anywhere from one to six years, but four years is typical for most. An apprentice spends the majority of the time in a workplace environment learning the practical skills of a career from a journeyman-- someone who has done the job for many years. The rest of the apprentice's time is spent in a classroom environment learning the theoretical skills the career requires. Being an apprentice is a full-time undertaking. One of the advantages of apprenticeship is that it does not cost apprentices anything. The companies that hire them pay for school. What's more, it offers apprentices an "earn while you learn" opportunity. They usually start out at half the pay of a journeyman, and the pay increases gradually as they move further along in the job and studies. Near the end of the apprenticeship, their wages are usually 90 percent of what a journeyman would receive. Apprenticeship also pays off for employers. It can offer employers a pool of well-trained workers to draw from.Despite the advantages, apprentices are usually required to work during the day and attend classes at night, which leaves little time for anything else. Sometimes, they might be laid off(下岗) if business for th e employers is slow.Once they have completed the apprenticeship and become journeymen, they receive a nationally recogni zed and portable certification and their pay also increases again. Some journeymen continue employment with the companies they apprenticed with; others go onto different companies or become self-employed contractors.71. Linda has never met the children, but that’s all part of the joy of giving as secret Santas, she says."It's an amazing feeling to buy gifts on an anonymous (匿名旳) basis," says Linda. "It brings a whole new meaning to the holidays."Linda and Tony are an American couple living in Toronto, Canada, and Linda did charitable work as amember of the American Women's Club of Toront o. As the name suggests, members are U.S. citizens living in Toronto, who join together for fellowship and community service. To find her "adopted" family, Linda goes to the local schools and requests a wish list for a family that's struggling to survive. Last year she helped a single mother with three children. The mother works as a cleaning lady in a nursing home."The list is always heartbreaking. They have an opportunity to ask for anything and do just the opposite, asking for basic clothes or simple toys," she says. "We always buy the kids a new winter coat, hats, and gloves." She also buys gifts for the parents.Last year Linda asked the mother for a second wish list--one that didn't include the basics. "Every child should have a Christmas that sticks with them for a lifetime." She purchased iPods for the two older children and a video game system for the youngest."I have learned a very valuable lesson in all of this," says Linda. "Pay attention to what's going on in your own backyard--no matter where you live."The joy of giving as secret Santas is much sweeter when the gift is anonymous.Section C (25 marks)Directions: Write an English composition according to the instructions given below in Chinese.假设你和几位同学成立了一种英语俱乐部,开展了为期两个月旳活动。

It’s also got many instructions for cooking.M: It seems to be fairly traditional. How about World Wide Fish?W: Oh, it looks more like a reference book than a cook book. A lot of reading, and not many pictures.M: It’s interesting, though, the way it’s organized fish by fish.W: That’s true. How much is it?M: Twelve pounds.W: And one I picked up first?M: Something Fishy? Oh, here it is. That’s seventeen pounds.W: H mm… Well, this one has a nice combination of pictures and instructions. When her father died, she went to New York for a break. Every morning, she’d go to a coffee bar. When she got back to London, she realized that there was nothing like those coffee bars. So she decided to give up her job and do something about it. She opened the first coffee bar in 1995, and her success was quick. She opened ten more the following year. Now she is proud of her success and plans to open eighty morebesides the eighty-five she already has. And Maria is only 33 years old.3、福建卷Text 1W: What do you think we need to buy for our new kitchen?M: We've got a fridge and a dinner table already. Today for our writing class, we are glad to have Mr. Henry Stone with us, a well-known writer in this country. He’s going to share with us his wri ting experiences. Now, Henry, please tell us how you find so many interesting things for your stories.M: Okay, I watch people a lot. I do that when I travel. I’ve been to many countries such as Britain, Italy and Sweden. So I spend a lot of time at airports. While waiting for my flights, I watch people passing by and start my imagination. For example, the other day when I was waiting for my flight for Greece, I saw a couple. They were buying magazines at that moment. They were not wearing business clothes but the man was carrying a suitcase. Every few seconds the woman looked around. I wondered if someone was following them. Perhaps they were running away and, you know this reminded me of a story in the newspaper that day. A bank clerk stole 1,000,000 pounds a week before and disappeared with his wife. There was a picture of them in the paper. The couple really looked like the thieves. Maybe I should stop them. Just then I saw them say goodbye to each other and the woman walked away. Well sometimes I make mistakes like that but I find things like that very useful for my writing.4、广东卷Text 1W: Hi, Jack. I heard that you are back at school now.M: Yes, Susan. Then after two years I came back to school again.I actually felt like I appreciated my education more, because I was ready for it.M: That’s a good point. I didn’t go on to college after high school, because I wasn’t ready. I needed a break.W: Exactly.M: Did it take you a while to remember how to form my papers or stuff like that?W: Yeah. And I was an English major, so I have to do a lot of that. But catch on quickly and you just learn. Are you taking a lot of courses? But during the 1968 Mexico City Olympic, three runners performed such great acts that race is considered a truly historic event. One of the runners, Abebe Bikila from Ethiopia, is famous for having won the Olympic marathons at the Rome and Tokyo games. He hoped to win a third in Mexico City. A little more than an hour later, word was passed to the remaining audience that the last runner of marathon was arriving. Into the stadium, came Akhwari of Tanzania, his leg was bloody and bandaged. Moving with pain at every step, he pressed on and finally got passed the finishing line. The crowd cheered as if this last runner had been the winner.Text 4M: Hey, Lucy. Now, if you’re meeting someone for the first time like Claudia’s parents, you should make sure you arrive on time.M: Ok. So arrive on time. What about common greetings?W: Well, Germans often shake hands and they use the person’s family name unless they are really close friends.M: Ok. What about with Claudia?()W: Uh, you can call her Claudia, shake hands and why don’t you take her some flowers? Text 5Rainforests are the lungs of the planet – storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and producing a significant amount of the world’s oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for guaranteeing their own survival; the tall trees make a cover of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, dry heat and strong winds.Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is a deliberate method to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects. To survive in the forest, animals must climb from tree to tree. The ground floor of the forest is not all covered with leaves and bushes, but is where leaves turn into food for the trees and other forest life. They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rainforests can produce 75% of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal – and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet.Text 6W: Hello?M: Hello. Is that 8821199?W: It is. First let's deal with the importance of exercise. Many people today live a kind of lazy life, sitting in the office all day and then watching TV the whole evening. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this way of life is bad for your health. In fact it can lead to all kinds of health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure and some of the problems can result in death. Now let me talk a little about preventing illness. Probably the most important thing to bear in mind is to be active. This does not mean that you have to go out and play sports. Of course sports are an excellent way to stay healthy but it's also important to remember that healthy activities can take many different forms like gardening and doing housework, for example. Now let me suggest some ways of doing exercise. In the first place, you should choose an activity that you enjoy and one you'll stick with and then start exercising slowly and try to increase the amount of exercise step by step. Well, that's allI have time for today, so until next time. 61.W: I’m spending my vacation in Hainan this summer. On most days, our grades were based on our oral answer to homework questions.Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had apeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the zxxk front or the back of the classroom and work toward the other end.Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time, I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations.英语试题第7页(共12页)What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate.

大纲词汇sport, throw, race, field,新课标词汇high jump, long jump, event, track2.句型 He can / can’t …

2. 要求学生以brainstorm的方式说出what sport they know3.

(这是学生们做练习的情景)(以下是课堂练习内容)baseball skate swim basketballbadminton ski football 100-meter hurdleshigh jump tennis surf table tennislong jump 100-meter race shot put long jump4. 学习新单词throw the shot put do the high jump do the long jump do the 200 – meter run run the 110-meter hur dles5.

T: What’s the poster about?Ss: Sports eventsT: How many events for boys?Ss: TenT: How many events for girls?Ss: Seven2.

Gary can run the 110-meter hurdles. True FalseHe can do the high jump. True FalseHe’s fast. True FalseHe can’t throw the shot put. True F alseHe can do the long jump. True False4.

(I can / can’t… He can / can’t… They… We…

第一个同学说 I can swim. I can’t swim, but I can skate第三个同学说:I can’t skate, but I can dothe high jump. I can’t do the high jump, but I can do the long jum p.设计意图:变换语境操练是机械模仿进一步的发展,对语言运用的能力的要求又有所提高,有利于开发学生的创新能力和求异思维能力,这样的活动增加了趣味性,使紧张的气氛得到缓解。

3. 采访同学看谁能做:要求用句型 Can you do…提问,用 I can…根据我课前调查我写了以下词组play basketball,sing wellrun fast,dance well,play the piano,run the 100-meter race.

4. 让学生用What can you do?

(两人一组)A: What club do you want to join?B: We want to join the music club./ the sports club.A: ___________________?B: I can sing / play basketball.A: ___________________?B: Yes, I can.A: ____________________?B: No, ________________.A: Ok. Welcome to join us.
