Not only do they still love struggling against gravity (重力),but they actually have created a competitive sport around their favorite entertainment. That sport is known as “kiiking”.Swings are deep in Estonian culture, and you can still find various types of swings in villages and towns all around the country. They are used by children and adults alike, either for simple fun,or as a way for communities to bond during celebrations. So maybe it doesn’t come as a big surprise that Estonia has an extreme sport based on swinging. Some people see it as dull, others as pointless, but to those who practice it, kiiking is the coolest thing in the world. The rules of kiiking are pretty simple. Competitors start swinging at a certain height, and if they can complete a full circuit(圈)around the spindle, they can try to do the same after the swing has been raised a little, and so on. Those who fail to do a full spindle are left with the result of their last successful try.Watching kiiking videos might give you the impression that it’s an easy sport, but Laansalu, who has been practicing it since she was 8 years old, says it requires both great physical strength一strong legs and strong arms一and technique一knowing when to stand or sit in the swing chair, when to push yourself over the spindle of the swing and how to avoid injury.Small groups of kiikers have been appearing in other countries, including the United States, but now it is still considered as an Estonian sport. The fiinds (基金) that were raised will help cover medical expenses so that the dog can be transported from China to Leonard’s home of Edinburgh, Scotland. The female dog, who Leonard appropriately named Gobi, joined Leonard on the second day of the annual 4 Deserts Race Series and ran side-by-side with him for 77 miles. Leonard noticed Gobi running with 101 runners during the first day, but on the second day, Gobi was on the start line, looking up at him. "This was the first contact I had with her and as I ran off the line I noticed her by my side," he said. "I didn't speak much to her that day, but at the finish line she followed me into the tent and we slept next to each other. That was it then."Leonard shared his sleeping space, water and food with his small companion during the race. He even lent her a hand when needed. "I carried her across rivers that she could not cross on her own, " he wrote on his Crowdfimder page. After the race, it was clear to Leonard that he had developed a special bond with the pup and started researching ways to get Gobi to the UK. There are many social skills to learn, which advance with age and experience, trial and error, and experiencing the satisfaction that comes from contributing to an ongoing friendship. ”“Friendship starts as soon as children can crawl off their parents ' lapsover to another child, ” adds Michael Thompson, Ph.D., co -author of her lifewith you to her life with her friends. but who their friends are, how they interact with them, and how popular they are, is something parents have only limited control over. ”Experts on children 's behavior say that problems like jealousies, breakups, bullying and teasing account for a big part of what parents, kids and teachers talk about, and what parents worry about. At the same time, many families have possessed their new cars. Besides, our country hosted the 29th Olympic Games successively in 2019. Another inspiring event was that the astronaut Zhai Zhigang in Shenzhou VII skillfully and smoothly carried out the world-famous space walk, which shows the great achievement of our scientific research. How much our country has changed is due to the “reform and opening-up policy”and the “rich-people policy”coducted all over our country. We are very happy and proud of these achievements. I am sure our country will become even stronger and richer. I love our motherland very much. Let’s work hard to make contribution to our country in the future.Thank you!IV. 附加题 1-5 CFDBE第四天I. 1. survived 2. designed 3. Remove 4. sinking 5. Regular6. replace7. admitted8. deserve9. What’s worse, pollution is getting more and more serious and the climate is becoming warmer and warmer. Therefore we should take measures to build a harmonious relationship between man and nature. On the one hand, in our daily life we can recycle water and turnoff lights when necessary; while on the other hand, we can choose to use public transport rather than use private cars to reduce carbon emission.
AIs It Bad to Cross Your Legs When You Sit?Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice th at they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won't feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it's important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn't have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it's important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it's best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it's not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This isbecause when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.21.According to para 2, we can infer that___________A.it's no big deal to cross our legs for less than 15 minutes.B.we will feel uncomfortable at the moment we cross the legs.C.we should take a walk every hour after sitting still.D.crossing legs while sitting makes it harder to circulate our blood.22.How many health problems can be caused by crossing legs according to the text?A. 2 B3 C.4 D. 523. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?A. ① B ① C. ① D. ①② ③ ② ③ ② ③ ④ ② ③④ ⑤ ④ ⑤ ⑤ ④ ⑤BColumbus Day has been on American calendars since 1937,when President Franklin D.Roosevelt declared October 12 a federal holiday to honor the Italian explorer who“discovered”the Americas in 1492.However,the holiday has always been controversial. Many people believe that Christopher Columbus should not be given cred it for“discovering”the continent, since native Americans had already been living there for generations.Besides, the explorer,s mission was not a scientific“voyage of discovery”,but one intended to conquer the new land.Critics maintain that the Spanish armyColumbus brought on his second voyage, caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of indigenous(土著的)people. Those that survived the massacre became slaves, working in mines. Many, therefore, believe that the explorer's arrival should not be celebrated. In 1977,a delegation of Native nations at the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas, proposed renaming the holiday to“Indigenous People’s Day”.The proposal passed with a majority. However, convincing the rest of the country to do the same was not that easy.It took 15 years before the city of Berkeley in California adopted the name in 1992 and then 22 more years before Minneapolis,MN and Seattle,WA did the same in 2014.The following year, eight more cities including Albuquerque,NM and Portland,OR,began celebrating the second Monday of October as“Indigenous People’s Day”. The movement really started to gain momentum in 2016 when 19 cities, including Boulder,CO and Phoenix,AZ,as well as the states of Minnesota and Vermont,a11 decided to rename the day to honor Native Americans. In 2017,21 more cities, including Austin,TX and Los Angeles,CA have made the shih. With the increasingly larger number of cities moving away from Columbus Day each year,it will be interesting t o see if“Indigenous People’s Day”gets federal recognition.Meanwhile,it will continue to be the focal point of debates throughout the Americas.24.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A.Indigenous People’s Day Has Got Federal Recognition after Years’Work B.Columbus Day Honoring the Italian Explorer Has Always Been Controversial C.Christopher Columbus Should Not Be Given Credit for Discovering Americas D.More Cities Have Replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day 25.Many people don’t agree that________.A.Indigenous discovered the continentB.Columbus was a remarkable explorerC.Native Americans were abusedD.Columbus Day is a public holiday26.What can we infer from the second paragraph?A.Columbus was well received by indigenous people.B.The indigenous people hated the Columbus’arrival.C.The Spanish army rebelled against Columbus’rule.D.Few soldiers survived the attack by native Americans.27.Which of the following cities is the earliest to replace Columbus Day with Indigeno us People’s Day?A.Portland. B.Phoenix. C.Seattle. D.Los Angeles.CRecently, Google announced that its voice-activated program, Google Assistant, will be offering a new feature called “Tell Me Something Good.” Users can now give that command and r eceive an earful of positive news stories. What’s more, the New York Times has a page online called “Fixes,” which focuses on what people are doing to fight social ills. As media researcher Karen McIntyre of Virginia Commonwealth University explains, these are all parts of a news movement called constructive journalism.Constructive journalism is different from “feel-good news,” like a fireman rescuing a cat. Instead, constructive journalism offers a more complete but appealing version of the news, says McIntyre. In her opinion, besides focusing on solutions, constructive journalism includes reporting on the historical and social setting of specific news incidents, using reliable data to look at longer-term trends, and avoiding interview techniques that create drama without increasing understanding. However, newspapers thrive on eyes on the page, and editors may be less interested in constructive journalism if they aren’t convinced that it’ll attract their readers. While McIntyre acknowledges those concerns, research has shown the opposite to be true. For example, one study found participants who read an online story that focused on approaches to poverty spent more time on the page than those reading a similar story without focusing on solutions. There is muc h we don’t know yet about how this kind of journalism affectsbehavior. The research is relatively young, though at least one of McIntyre’s studies showed an interesting result: people who read inspiring news stories were more willing afterwards to sign up for generous actions related to the story, such as donating money to support a cause from the story. Therefore, she argues, there’sa hunger for this type of news.28. Why are Google Assistant and Fixes mentioned in the first paragraph?A. To say how the news movement works.B. To stress the importance of positive news.C. To show what constructive journalism is.D. To lead in the topic of the whole text.29. Constructive journalism encourages stories that__________.A. inform people of big events.B. are solution-focused.C. focus on amazing you.D. are based on interesting facts.30. How should constructive journalism stories be written?A. In a serious way.B. In a humorous way.C. In a usual way.D. In an understandable way.31. What may be the problem with constructive journalism?A. That it isn’t appealing to readers.B. That it isn’t easy to collect and edit.C. That it adds to some editors’ concerns.D. That it is unavaila ble to some readers.DCold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, researchers say, running in cold weather helps improve one's performance. Many people say running in the winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and bitter winds. Yet many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather. That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you runin cold weather, your heart rate and the body's dehydration (脱水) levels are lower than in warmer conditions. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. This information comes from sports scientists at St. Mary’s University in London. John Brewer is a professor of applied sport science at St. Mary’s.For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room they called an “environmental chamber.” The researchers then recreated summer and winter weather conditions in the room. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions. Brewer says he and his team recorded biological measurements of the runners.“We've got a group of subjects into the environmental chamber, we've changed the conditions to replicate the summer or winter and we've got them to run a 10km under both of those conditions and taken various measurements on each runner while they've been completing their 10km.”Brewer says every movement runners make produces heat. He explains that one way in which we lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweat. He says the body also loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin.32.What can we know about running in winter?A.It increases pressure of the body. B.It improves the function of body. C.It makes your heart rate higher. D.It needs more water than in summer. 33.What can we know about the research according to the text?A.Researchers interviewed the subjects B.Subjects were asked to run in winter and summer.C.Subjects built the “environmental chamber”.D.Biological measurements of the runners were recorded.34.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “replicate” in Paragraph 7?A.Combine. B.Remember. C.Copy. D.Decorate.35.What’s the best title for the passage?A.Environmental Chamber B.The Way of Losing Heat C.Running in Cold Weather Improves Performance D.Biological Measurements of the Runners第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences."China is impossible to overlook," says Hill. "Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion —they are central to its movement. "Of course, only are today's top Western designers being influenced by China- some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese." Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galiano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs-and beating them hands down in design and sales," adds Hil.For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion. "The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers," she says. "China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China-its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways."24.What can we learn about the exhibition in New York?A.It promoted the sales of artworks.B. It attracted a large number of visitors.C. It showed ancient Chinese clothes.D. It aimed to introduce Chinese models.25.What does Hill say about Chinese women?A.They are setting the fashion.B. Today $8 or $10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that. The trend, then, was toward the "penny paper"-a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street. This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible(but not easy)to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830,but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer's office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny-usually two or three cents was charged-and some of the older well-known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase "penny paper " caught the public's fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny. This new trend of newspapers for "the man on the street" did not begin well. Some of the early ventures(企业)were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling.28.Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s?A. Academic.B. Unattractive.C. Inexpensive.D. Confidential.29 What did street sales mean to newspapers?A. They would be priced higher.B. They would disappear from cities.C. They could have more readers.D. They could regain public trust.30.Who were the newspapers of the new trend targeted at?A.Local politicians.B. Common people.C. Young publishers.D. Rich businessmen.31.What can we say about the birth of the penny paper?A.It was a difficult process.B. It was a temporary success.C. It was a robbery of the poor.D. It was a disaster for printers.DMonkeys seem to have a way with numbers.A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols consistingof numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined—or added—the symbols to get the reward. Here's how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone who led the team, described the experiment: In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. On one part of the screen, a symbol would appear, and on the other side two symbols inside a circle were shown. For example, the number 7 would flash on one side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8. If the monkeys touched the left side of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice; if they went for the circle, they would be rewarded with the sum of the numbers—17 in this example. After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a calculation, not just memorizing the value of eachcombination. When the team examined the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed that the monkeys tended to underestimate(低估)a sum compared with a single symbol when the two were close in value—sometimes choosing ,for example, a 13 over the sum of 8 and 6. The underestimation was systematic: When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added only a fraction(小部分)of the smaller number to it."This indicates that there is a certain way quantity is represented in their brains, "Dr. Livingstone says. “But in this experiment what they're doing is paying more attention to the big number than the little one.”32.What did the researchers do to the monkeys before testing them?A.They fed them.B. They named them.C. They trained them.D. They measured them.33.How did the monkeys get their reward in the experiment?A.By drawing a circle.B. By touching a screen.C. By watching videos.D. By mixing two drinks.34.What did Livingstone's team find about the monkeys?A.They could perform basic addition.B. They could understand simple words.C. They could memorize numbers easily.D. They could hold their attention for long.35.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?A. Entertainment.B. Health.C. Education.D. Your friends’ lives may look more exciting than yours on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but new research shows it is because they are faking (伪造) it.A recent survey has found around two-thirds of people on social media post images to their personal information to make their lives seem more adventurous. And more than three quarters of those asked said they judged their peers based on what they saw on their Instagram, Snapehat or Facebook pages. The British survey, by smart phone maker HTC, found that, in order to make our own pages and lives appear more exciting, six percent also said they had borrowed items to include in the images in order to pass them off as their own. More than half of those surveyed said they posted images of items and places purely to show off, causing jealousy among friends and family.Behavioral psychologist Hemmings said the trend was unsurprising due to the rise of social media. “We’re living in a world of instant communication.” she said. “Fashion and style used to live and die in magazines; now people are in search of authentic, peer-to-peer recommendations as well, making social media an equal power house to magazines and newspapers.”“With images being shared in an instant, we desire to know what our friends are wearing, or what super stars are buying, as soon as the y have got them.” Such is the influence of social media sites like Instagram, 76 percent of those asked also said seeing items on social media influences them to buy them, with men more likely to take style advice and buy what they see.4.How do some people make their lives appear more exciting?A.By buying pictures.B. AYinxu (Ruins of Yin) is the ruins of the last capital of China's Shang Dynasty (1600 BC—1046 BC). The capital served 255 years for 12 kings. It shows the golden age of early Chinese culture, crafts and science, a time of great prosperity(繁荣) during the Chinese Bronze Age(青铜时代).Discovered in 1899, Yinxu is one of the oldest and largest archeological sites(考古遗址) in China and is one of the historical capitals of China and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It lies in central Henan Province, near the modern city of Anyang, and is open to the public as the Garden Museum of Yinxu. It is famous as the source of oracle bone script(甲骨文), the earliest recorded form of Chinese writing. The oracle bone script has recorded almost everything from dream-explaining to events such as harvests, birth of a child, the weather and the success of military campaigns.Over 3,000 tombs, 2,200 pits, and 200 houses have been dug out at Yinxu. The large number of burial accessories found there shows the high level of the Shang crafts industry. The site includes a main palace and an ancient tomb. Besides, there are a number of large buildings, at least 53 of which have been dug out.Yinxu has seen many years of research, first researched in the late 1920s to the early 1930s and most recently by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.1. During which period may Yin have been the capital of China's Shang Dynasty?A. 1600 BC-1500 BC.B. 1500 BC—1200 BC.C. 1200 BC-1050 BC.D. 1050 BC—850 BC.2. From the passage, we can know that Yinxu ________.A. was discovered in the 1920sB. can be visited by the publicC. now proved the failure of the Shang DynastyD. was the last capital of China's Shang Dynasty3. We can infer from the passage that ________.A. there are 200 houses in YinxuB. many things are still to be dug outC. Anyang is a city of the Shang DynastyD. no research has been carried out on YinxuBTwo-thirds of the world's major rivers have now been disrupted(中断) with more than 50,000 dams in an attempt to store water and provide power. In the US, there are more than 85,000 dams, disrupting large and small rivers and in most cases transforming natural flow. The most famous of these, the Hoover Dam constructed in the 1930's, is mainly responsible for the fact that the Colorado River no longer reaches the ocean.Dams, besides all their attractive benefits, also have negative impacts. Creating a reservoir(水库) means a large area must be flooded. Communities may lose their land houses and cultural relies(遗址). Down stream of a dam, the flow may be reduced so that farmers cannot irrigate their fields.Environmentally, the new reservoir can be a paradise for wildlife especially birds. However, it can cause greenhouse gas emissions(排放) and poison the water for fish. Also, the dramatic rise and fall of water levels during dam releases is too extreme for plants and animals to cope with, resulting in dead zones around the shores of reservoirs. Fish that lay their eggs in the shallows, for example, may find a few hours later that those sites are high and dry.Dams don't just block water flow. The flow may be reduced so that farmers will have great trouble getting water for their fields. They also prevent fish migrations and are a barrier to sediment(沉淀物) flows. Instead of rushing downriver, sediments get backed up against the dam wall, which causes the reservoir level to increase over time. However, sediments which are rich in nutrients have become a problem. The fertility of the entire system can be influenced be influenced by soils lost during seasonal rains, not being replaced.Perhaps the biggest problem can be seen in deltas(三角洲), often host to large cities, which are sinking into the oceans. Groundwater is being extracted to feed the city, causing the urban weight to sink and sediments washed away by the ocean are no longer being replaced. The result is that sea level rises in cities from Shanghai to Alexandria.1.What effects does creating a reservoir have on people's life?a. People will see fewer birds near the rivers.b. Farmers below the dam may have less water to irrigate their fields.c. Visitors can't see some cultural relics anymore.d. More conflicts and wars over water will break out.e. Each one has its own language and traditions. But the people of Belgium are untied in their love for Belgian potato fries. The fries are prepared and sold the same way in all areas of the country. The Reuters news service reports that potatoes reached Belgium in the 16th century. But it was not until the 19th century that restaurants and others began selling fried potatoes throughout the country as a separate meal.Recently, a Belgian group launched a campaign aimed at getting the United Nations (UN) to recognize the popular treat. The group wants the UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to place the food on its cultural heritage(遗产) list. The UNESCO list recognizes more than 300 objects» beliefs and practices. They include Turkish coffee and the traditional Chinese theater known as Peking opera. The list also includes a dance, the Argentinian tango, and the singing of the Aka pygmies of the Central African Republic. UNESCO says the list is "made up of intangible heritage elements(非物质文化遗产元素) that help show the diversity of heritage and raise awareness about its importance".Belgian potato fries are traditionally sold in a paper wrapper, or cone, in a "fritkot" There are about 5,000 fritkots in Belgium. That means they are 10 times more common as a percentage of the population as McDonald's restaurants in the United States. The national organization of fritkot owners say the small, often unfurnished buildings are much like Belgium itself. It says these buildings combine the country's acceptance of disorder with a dislike of structures that all look the same. The group says 95 percent of Belgians visit a fried potato hut at least once a year.1.Belgian potato fries ________.A.were recognized by the UNESCOB.are well received in BelgiumC.are sold in all food storesD.didn't become a separate meal until the 16th century2.What's the aim of the Belgian group?A.To place Belgian potato fries on the cultural heritage list.B.To prevent other countries producing Belgian potato fries.C.To show the diversity of Belgian foods.D.To prove the popularity of Belgian foods.3.Which of the following is NOT listed in the UNESCO list?A.Peking opera.B.The Argentinian tango.C.Turkish coffee.D.American restaurants.4.What does the underlined word "fritkot" in the last paragraph probably refer to?A.A simple house which is used to live in.B.A kind of small, unfurnished building.C.A place where machines are used to make goods.D.A piece of paper, plastic, or thin metal that covers something.DMore than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, lots of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1. 67 million pieces are housed in no more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors. Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23,000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago. The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official channels to demand the return of relics. In 2003, a priceless bronze pig's head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao entrepreneur(企业家) Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.Although buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache. In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database(数据库) collecting relevant information. It has signed several international agreements with many countries on this matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations.1.What is the passage mainly about?A.The ways to recover cultural relics.B.The efforts to recover Chinese cultural relics.C.Stanley Ho donated a bronze pig s head to Beijing.D.Chinese cultural relics were stolen by the Anglo-French Allied Army.2.We can infer from the passage that _______.A.China has enough money to buy all the cultural relics back.B.The Chinese government has done a lot to recover the lost cultural relics.C.Many countries have returned the lost cultural relics to China for free.D.China is preparing to set up a database to collect information about the lost cultural relics.3.Which of the following statements about the bronze pig's head is NOT true?A.It was made in the Qing Dynasty.B.It is now in the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.C.It was donated by the French government to Qiina,D.It was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago.4.The underlined word "feasible" in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by "_______".A. possibleB. difficultC. wonderfulD. careful第二节根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The time limit was forgotten; so was the Christmas toy ban (禁令).Gilbert spent the rest of his life improving erector sets. His company made and sold the sets, plus chemistry and other science sets and toy trains. He made items for homes, businesses, and the army. But early horseswere n' t tam 服的 ) eno ugh to perform these kinds of tasks. Scien tists think the first in teract ionshumans had with horses were far different from those today.Thousands of years ago, people killed the wild horses that lived around them for food. Over time, people began to catch the animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestication. As people began to tame and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirablecharacteristics. For example, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a gentle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People who used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to keep stronger animals.Characteristics like strength are partly controlled by the animals 'genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of houses would show more of these chosen characteristics.Modern day horse breeds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This variety didn 't exist in the horse population before domestication. The Shetland horse is one of the smallest breeds — typ i cally reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, the animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井)with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came on the scene around 1700. People bred these heavy, tall horses to pull large vehicles used for carrying heavy loads. The domestication of horses has had great effects on societies. For example, horse were important tools in the advancement of modern agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm moreefficiently. Before they were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on foot. Riding horses allowed people to travel far greater distance in much less time. That encouraged populations living in different areas to interact with one another. The new from of rapid transportation helped cultures spread around the world 59.
