大学英语第三阶段参考答案

大学英语(二)第三阶段一、阅读理解1.How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the ori gin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike ani mals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, a ctions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and t hat later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Thos e sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations - the things they b ring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by exp erience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the mo re the number of words that mean something increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also expres s these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emoti ons. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary sty le. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his mea ning in words which sing like music and which by their position and asso ciation can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our w ords carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech sil ly and vulgar.纠错(1)(4分)The origin of language is _________.A. a legend handed down from the pastB. a matter that is hidden or secretC. a question difficult to answerD. a problem not yet solved答案D 解析(2)(4分)What is true about words _______A. But these happy conditions a re fairly new. It is not many years since a man who had to have operatio n felt all its pain.Long ago, operation had usually to be done while the sick man could feel everything. Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called "laughing gas". Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time l aughing, but one man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn' t seem to feel pain when they were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on himself. He asked a friend to help him.Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well's teet h. His teacher got the ide a that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she th ought that they would not expect too much of him. 3 this way, they too d eveloped the idea, "Isn't it too bad that Alfred can't do arithmetic" He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was usele ss to try, and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected. One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which 4 of the other studen ts had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the ide a that he couldn't do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His new 5 confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. With a clear symbolic meaning, the flag in the traditional form is still used today to mark buildings, ships and other vehicles related to a country. The national flag as we know it today is in no way a primitive(原始的)artifact. It is , rather, the product of thousands of years' development. Historians believe that it had two major ancestors, of which the earlier served to show wind direction.Early human beings used very fragile houses and boats. Often strong winds would tear roofs from houses or cause high waves that endangered travelers. People's food supplies were similarly vulnerable. Even after they had learned how to plant grains, they still needed help from nature to ensure good harvests. Therefore they feared and depended on the power of the wind, which could bring warmth from one direction and cold from another.Using a simple piece of cloth tied to the top of a post to tell the direction of the wind was more dependable than earlier methods, such as watching the rising of smoke from a fire. The connection of the flag with heavenly power was therefore reasonable. Early human societies began to fix long pieces of cloth to the tops of totems(图腾) before carrying them into battle. They believed that the power of the wind would be added to the good wishes of the gods and ancestors represented by the totems themselves. These flags developed very slowly into modern flags. The first known flag of a nation or a ruler was unmarked: The king of China around 1000 B.C. was known to have a white flag carried ahead of him. This practice might have been learned from Egyptians even further in the past, but it was from China that it spread over trade routes through India, then across Arab lands, and finally to Europe, where it met up with the other ancestor of the national flag.1.The best title for the passage would be .A. McKay was included in a list of university alumni (校友)who had served during the First World War, but his name was unfamiliar to Broad, a specialist in military history. Out of curiosity, Broad spent hours at the local archives (档案馆)in a fruitless search for information on McKay. Tired and discouraged, he finally gave up. On his way out, Broad’s glance happened to fall on an exhibiting case showing some old newspapers. His eye was drawn to an old picture of a young man in a rugby uniform. As he read the words beside the picture, he experienced a thrilling realization.“After looking for him all day, there he was, staring up at me out of the exhibiting case,” said Broad. Excited by the find, Broad asked his students to continue his search. They combed old newspapers and other materials for clues. Gradually, a picture came into view.Captain Alfred Edwin McKay joined the British Royal Flying Corps in 1916. He downed ten enemy planes, outlived his entire squadron (中队)as a WWI flyer, spent some time as a flying instructor in England, then returned to the front, where he was eventually shot down over Belgium and killed in December 1917. But there’s more to his story. “For a brief time in 1916 he was probably the most famous pilot in the world,” says Broad. “He was credited with downing Oswald Boelcke, the most famous German pilot at the time.” Yet, in a letter home, McKay refused to take credit, saying that Boelcke had actually crashed into another German plane.McKay’s war records were destroyed during a World War II air bombing on London — an explanation for why he was all but forgotten. But now, thanks to the efforts of Broad and his students, a marker in McKay’s memory was placed on the university grounds in November 2007.“I found my eyes filling with tears as I read the word ‘deceased’ (阵亡)next to his name,” said Corey Everrett, a student who found a picture of Mckay in his uniform. “This was such a simple example of the fact that he had been a student just like us, but instead of finishing his time at Western, he chose to fight and die for his country.”6. What made Professor Broad continue his search for more information on McKay?A. A form of McKay.B. A story about McKay.C. A table of McKay.D. A picture of McKay.7. What did the students find out about McKay?A. He trained pilots for some time.B. He lived longer than other pilots.C. He died in the Second World War.D. He was downed by the pilot Boelcke.8. McKay’s flying documents were destroyed in .A. BelgiumB. GermanyC. CanadaD. England9. We can learn from the last paragraph that McKay .A. preferred fight to his studyB. went to war before graduationC. left a picture for Corey EverrettD. set an example for his fellow students10. What is the text mainly about?A. The research into war history.B. The finding of a forgotten hero.C. The wonderful pilots of the two world wars.D. " However, most students today cannot reach these goals. One careful study has discovered that the undergraduates are spending less time in study -from about 25 hours per week in the early 1960s to below 15 hours today.Studying also leads to better college grades. To have better grades means higher chance ofbecoming "rich and wealthy." One study of 20, 000 alumni (校友)15 years after their graduation found the following results. Those who were in the top third of the class earned a lot more than those in the middle third. The middle third earned more than classmates in the bottom third. Not surprisingly, those whose grades were not good at college wished they had studied more in school. Whether students should study alone or with others is more complicated. If the teachers leave problems for students to solve, group study is often helpful if students first try to study by themselves. But simply getting together with classmates without first studying alone seem bad for learning. In choosing courses, many students prefer classes with a little homework and easy grading. Yet taking harder courses with longer readings and more papers helps to increase learning. In college, there will still be plenty of time for fun. Once again, however, researchers find that not all outside activities are good. In general, activities, such as participating in student organizations and talking with classmates can be more fruitful.Last but not least, college is a wonderful place to have new interests, enrich your experience, and set your goals. In doing so, you might think again about whether "being rich and wealthy" should be your main reason for studying in college. According to several investigators, money seekers are usually less satisfied with their lives. Maybe they are more likely to neglect things that are more important, such as family, friends and work.1. BCBCDWould it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and transmit their wealth to the next generation?UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest,Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition "depending on who needs it".Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons(神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.Simard talks about "mother trees", usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down "mother trees" with no awareness of these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest."We didn't take any notice of it" Simard says sadly. "Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance." If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.1. Which is the closest meaning of the word "transmit" in Paragraph 1?A. ChangeB. pass onC. exchangeD. support2.The underlined sentence"the opposite is true"in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees.A.depend on each otherpete for survivalC.protect their own wealthD.provide support for dying trees3. "Mother trees"are extremely important because they___________.A.look the largest in size in the forestB.seem more likely to be cut down by humansC.pass on nutrition to young treesD.know more about the complex"tree societies"4. The underlined word"it"in the last paragraph refers to _______.A.how"tree societies"workB.how trees grow oldC.how forestry industry developsD.how young trees survive5. Which of the following statements is NOT CORRECT according to the passage?A. Trees communicate with each other more deeply than we think.B. Nitrogen and carbon play very important roles in the forest ecological system.C. When "mother trees" are cut down, we are reducing the chances of survival for the forest.D. different from yourown, the transfusion could kill you. There are four basic types of blood:A,B,AB,and O.A simple test can indicate aperson’s blood type, which, like hair and height,is inherited from parents.Because of substances contained in each type, the four groups must be transfusedcarefully.Basically,A and B cannot be mixed.A and B cannot receive AB,but AB mayreceive A or B.O can give to any other group;hence it is often called the universal donor. For the opposite reason,AB is sometimes called the universal recipient. However, because so many reactions can occur in transfusions, patients usually receive only saltorplasma(liquid)until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible in the blood bank ofa hospital. In his way,it is possible to avoid any bad reactions to the transfusion. There is a relationship between your blood type and your nationality.AmongEuropeans and people of European ancestry, about42percent have type A while45percent have type O.The rarest is type AB.Other races have different percentages. One who has integrity is bound by and follows moral and ethical standards even whenmaking life's hard choices, choices which may be clouded by stress, pressure to succeed, or temptation. What happens if we lie, cheat, steal, or violate other ethical standards? We feel disappointed in ourselves and ashamed. But a lapse of integrity also affects our relationships with others. Trust is essential in any important relationship, whether personal or professional. Who can trust someone who is dishonest or unfair? Thus, integrity must be one of our most important goals.Risky BusinessWe are each responsible for our own decisions, even if the decision-making process has been undermined by stress or peer pressure. The real test of character is whether we can learn from our mistake, by understanding why we acted as we did, and then exploring ways to avoid similar problems in the future.Making ethical decisions is a critical part of avoiding future problems. We must learn to recognize risks, because if we can't see the risks we're taking, we can't make responsible choices. To identify risks, we need to know the rules and be aware of the facts. For example, one who doesn't know the rules about plagiarism may accidentally use words or ideas without giving proper credit, or one who fails to keep careful research notes may unintentionally fail to quote and cite sources as required. But the fact that such a violation is "unintentional" does not excuse the misconduct. Ignorance is not a defense."But Everybody Does It"Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts, but manage to fool themselves about the risks they're taking by using excuses: "Everyone else does it," "I'm not hurting anyone," or "I really need this grade." Excuses can get very elaborate: "I know I'm looking at another's exam, even though I'm supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but that's not cheating because I'm just checking my answers, not copying." We must be honest about our actions, and avoid excuses. If we fool ourselves into believing we're not doing anything wrong, we can't see the real choice we're making--and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public, and anyone could be watching over your shoulder. Would you feel proud or ashamed of your actions? If you'd rather hide your actions, that's a good indication that you're taking a risk and rationalizing it to yourself.Evaluating RisksTo decide whether a risk is worth taking, you must examine the consequences, in the future as well as right now, negative as well as positive, and to others as well as to yourself. Those who take risks they later regret usually focus on immediate benefits ("what's in it for me"), and simply haven't considered what might go wrong. The consequences of getting caught are serious, and may include a "0" on a test or assignment; an "F" in the class; suspension or dismissal from school; transcript notation; and a tarnished reputation. In fact, when you break a rule or law, you lose control over your life, and give others the power to impose punishment:you have no control over what that punishment might be. This is an extremely precarious and vulnerable position. There may be some matters of life and death, or highest principle, which might justify such a risk, but there aren't many things that fall in this category.Getting Away With It--Or NotThose who don't get caught pay an even higher price. A cheater doesn't learn from the test, depriving him/herself of an education. Cheating undermines confidence and independence: the cheater is a fraud, and knows that without dishonesty, he/she would have failed. Cheating destroys self-esteem and integrity, leaving the cheater ashamed, guilty, and afraid of getting caught. Worst of all, a cheater who doesn't get caught the first time usually cheats again, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems "easier." This slippery slope of eroding ethics and bigger risks leads only to disaster. Eventually, the cheater gets caught, and the later he/she gets caught, the worse the consequences. Students have been dismissed from school because they didn't get this simple message: Honesty is the ONLY policy that works. Cheating Hurts Others, TooCheaters often feel invisible, as if their actions "don't count" and don't really hurt anyone. But individual choices have a profound cumulative effect. Cheating can spread like a disease, and a cheater can encourage others just by being seen from across the room. Recent statistics suggest 30% or more of college students cheat. If a class is graded on a curve, cheating hurts others' grades. Even if there is no curve, cheating "poisons" the classroom, and others may feel pressured to join in. ("If I don't cheat, I can't compete with those who do.") Cheating also has a destructive impact on teachers. The real reward of good teaching is seeing students learn, but __38__.a cheater says, "I'm not interested in what you're trying to teach; all I care about is stealing a grade, regardless of the effect on others." The end result is a blatant and destructive attack on the quality of your education. Finally, cheating can hurt the reputation of the University, and harm those who worked hard for their degree. Why Integrity MattersIf cheating becomes the norm, then we are in big trouble. __39__.We must rely on the honesty and good faith of others every day. If not, we couldn't put money in the bank, buy food, clothing, or medicine from others, drive across a bridge, get on a plane, go to the dentist--the list is endless. There are many examples of the vast harm that is caused when individuals forget or ignore the effect their dishonesty can have. The savings and loan scandal, the stock market and junk bond swindles, and, of course, __40__.Watergate, have undermined the faith of many Americans in the integrity of political and economic leaders and society as a whole. Such incidents take a tremendous toll on our nation's economy and our individual well-being. For example, but for the savings and loan debacle, there might be funds available to reduce the national debt and pay for education. In sum, we all have a common stake in our school, our community, and our society. Our actions do matter. It is essential that we act with integrity in order to build the kind of world in which we want to live.31. A person of integrity not only sets high moral and ethical standards but also _______。

AChildren under the age of 18 will be allowed up to three hours per week to play video games, according to a notice issued by China's National Press and Publication Administration. Online game companies are required to provide services to minors — from8 to 9 p. m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays — as a way to safeguard their physical and mental health. Children are playing more and more online games these days. Is it time to limit their online gaming time? What role do parents have? Readers share their opinions.RizlaredOnline games are addictive, but if children are taught how to manage in a sensible and responsible manner then it is no longer a threat(威胁).To achieve this, parents need to set examples for not being glued to their phones. Teaching is and always will be the best solution to such problems.AndrewGood policy. By limiting time spent on online games, kids can spend time doing more useful things to develop their potential. They can go outside and run, jump and swim instead of sitting on a couch at home and playing with a smart phone.AdamIt is often seen that parents argue with children over cellphones. Most parents can hardly set and enforce the time limit for its daily usage. Some forcibly take away their cellphones, but it will ruin trust and relationship. Even worse, it will make their kids hate them.PinkExcessive(过度的)gaming is purely a waste of time and energy for minors and has a negative effect on both physical and mental health. The gaming industry should not put profit- flaking interests as its priority (优先事项) . They should act in a socially responsible way toprovide an environment for children to ensure their well-being and development.LaurenThere would be a loophole(漏洞). Children could use their parents’ or other adults’ IDs to avoid real-name registration, thus making it impossible to put this policy in effect. Parents ly need to strengthen guidance andsupervision to keep their children from gaming addiction.1. What should kids do according to Andrew?A. Play online games.B. Play with a smart phone.C. Study all the time.D. Go in for outside activities.2. What does Pink advise the gaming industry to do?A. Pay attention to its profit.B. Focus on kids’ health.C. Be responsible for kids’ surroundings.D. Persuade kids lo play more games.3. What role do parents have according to the passage?A. They keep hold of their phones.B. They set examples for their kids.C. They limit their kids’ time.D. They blame kids for addiction.BIt’s a big change from homeless teen to Yale (耶鲁)medical school student, butperseverancepaid off for Chelesa Fearce of Clayton County, Georgia.Fearce was a fourth grader when her mom was diagnosed (诊断) with Lymphoma (淋巴瘤).That began a hard time for the family. They had to move in and out of shelters, hotels and even the family car.“I know I have been made stronger. I was homeless. My family slept on the floor and we were lucky if we got more than one full meal a day. Getting a shower, food and clean clothes was an everyday struggle,” Fearce said in a speech she gave at her high school graduation ceremony. Fearce overcame her day-to-day struggles by focusing on a better day. “I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore. And that helped me get through,” she told WSBTV.Fearce was determined to be a good role model for her younger sister. She found inspiration in her late grandmother, struggling with deadly diseases, who gave Fearce emotional support. In her junior and senior year, Fearce took both high school and college courses, missing out on the free meals she depended on so she could get to her college classes. Despite having to use her cellphone to study after the shelter lights were turned off at night, she not only graduated as valedictorian (毕业生代表) of her 2013 class with a 4.5 grade average, but was also given a ride scholarship—including a meal plan to Spelman College in Atlanta. After graduation, she worked full time for two years at the National Institutes for Health inBethesda,Maryland, doing research on drugs. Last fall, she entered Yale and set a course to earn both a PhD and medical degree.4. Chelesa Fearce: A Girl of Many TalentsCA team of researchersfrom theUniversityofColorado Boulderhave created a revolutionary type of robotic muscles. They are strong and flexible at the same time, can feel the movements they perform and, whenever they suffer damage, they can self-heal. However, what is best about them is probably the fact that they are extremely cheap to manufacture. The robotic muscles have been called actuators, and have drawn inspiration from real-life muscles. By creating robots equipped with this kind of actuators, researchers would allowthem to perform movements just like human muscles. To make the robotic muscles work, they filled some flexible material with electrodes(电极)and with liquid and oil. Then, they applied some electricity, and the liquid and oil started moving around the electrodes and powered them. This way, the robotic muscles started contracting and relaxing just like real muscles, but a lot quicker.Researchers also took inspiration from the variety of human muscles, and created more types of actuators, each of them performing a different movement. They called these robotic muscles HASEL ( Hydraulically-Amplified Self-healing Electrostatic). However, they are superior to biological muscles as they are stronger, faster, and moreflexible.Even the researchers were amazed they could develop such technology. Eric Acome, the author of one of the studies, explained what is unique about the robotic muscles.“The ability to create electrically powered soft actuators that lift a gallon of water at several times per second is something we haven't seen before.”These muscles are special because they are also self-healing. This property is given by the liquid placed inside of them, which also gives them a lot more advantages than those mechanisms (机械)using solids. In the end, the material which keeps the liquid, the oil and the electrodes is extremely cheap. It is a type of polymer (聚合物)similar to the one used for potato chips bags, and can be manufactures for only 10 cents.8. What can we learn about actuators?A. They can heal on their own.B. They are biological muscles.C. They can not move like human muscles.D. They are slower to react than real muscles.9. What do actuators use to directly power electrodes?A. Solids.B. Liquid and oil.C. A type of polymer.D. Potato chips bags.10. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. The origin of actuators.B. The opinions on actuators.C. The advantages of actuators.D. The significance of actuators.11. In which part of a newspaper will the textmost probably appear?A. Health.B. Culture.C. Education.D. Technology.DWolves have a certain undeserved reputation: fierce, dangerous, good forhunting down deer and farmers’ livestock. However, wolves have a softer, more social side, one that has been embraced by a heart-warming new initiative. In a bid to save some of Europe’s last wolves, scientists have explored the willingness of these supposedly fierce creatures to help others of their kind. Female wolves, the scientists have discovered, make excellent foster parents to wolf cubs that are not their own. The study, published in Zoo Biology, suggests that captive-bred wolfcubs(幼兽)could be placed with wild wolf families, boosting the wild population. The gray wolf was once the world’s most widely distributed mammal, but it became extinct as a result of widespread habitat destruction and the deliberate killing of wolves suspectedof preying on livestock. Fear andhatred of the wolf have since become culturally rooted, fuelled by myths, fables and stories. In Scandinavia, the gray wolf is endangered, the remaining population found by just five animals. As a result, European wolves are severely inbred and have little geneticvariability(变异性), making them vulnerable to threats, such as outbreaks of disease that they can’t adapt to quickly. So Inger Scharis and Mats Amundin of Linkoping University, in Sweden, started Europe’s first gray wolf-fostering program. They worked with wolves keptat seven zoos across Scandinavia. Eight wolf cubs between four and six days old were removed from their natural parents and placed with other wolf packs in other zoos. The foster mothers accepted the new cubs placed in their midst. The welfare of the foster cubs and the wolves’ natural behavior were monitored using a system of surveillance cameras. The foster cubs had a similar growth rate as their step siblings in the recipient litter, as well as their biological siblings in the source litter. The foster cubs had a better overall survival rate, with 73% surviving until 33 weeks, than their biological siblings left behind, of which 63% survived. That rate of survival is similar to that seen in wild wolf cubs. Scientists believe that wolves can recognize their young, but this study suggests they can only do so once cubs are somewhere between three to seven weeks of age.If captive-bred cubs can be placed with wild-living families, which already have cubs of a similar age, not only will they have a good chance of survival, but they could help dramatically increase the diversity of the wild population, say the researchers. Just like the wild wolves they would join, these foster cubs would need protection from hunting. Their arrival could help preserve the future of one of nature’s most iconic and polarizing animals.12. What’s the theme of the passage?A. Giving wolf cubs a new lifeB. Foster wolf parents and foster cubsC. The fate of wild wolvesD. Changing diversity of wild wolves13. Which of the following flow chart best demonstrates the relationship between the wolves?A. B.C. D.14. Which of the following statements is true?A. Being able to find after-sales service creates a feeling of convenience and a sense of responsibility from the manufacturer. Whether this be in the form of a written guarantee or a guarantee based on reputation, the importance to the consumer is self-evident. A brand’s research and development,an unavoidable investment, usually back up safety guarantees for marketers nowadays. Product testing and refinement are conducted for both new and existing products. With the help of computerized machinery, quality control has achieved the highest level than ever before to enable consistency in production. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: As we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people’s attitude towards them.Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or tovisit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: Prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodiedto fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention tothese barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, that counts.36. The first paragraph focuses on that _______.A) there are many disabled people in the worldB) the number of disabled people in India is the greatestC) India has much more disabled people than CanadaD) it is impossible to get an exact figure of the world’s disabled people37. The key word in Paragraph 4 is _______.A) disability B) ignorance C) prejudice D) barriers38. The last word of the passag e “counts” most probably means _________.A) being most important C) being includedB) being considered D) being numbered39. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A) Even the able-bodied may lose some of their body functions when they get older.B) There are about 10 percent disabled people in the UK.C) The whole society should pay due attention to the barriers faced by the disabled people.D) There no longer exists prejudice against the disabled.40. It can be concluded from the passage that _______.A) we should try our best to prevent disablementB) both physical and mental barriers are hard to break downC) we must take a proper attitude towards the disabledD) the able-bodied people will never fully understand the disabledPassage FourQuestions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage. It’s never easy to admit you are in the wrong. Being human, we all need to know the art of apologizing. Look back with honesty and think how often you’ve judged roughly, said unkind things, and pushed yourself forward at the expense of a friend. Then count the occasions when you indicated clearly and truly that you were sorry. A bit frightening, isn’t it? Frightening because some deep wisdom in us knows that when even a small wrong has been committed, some mysterious moral feeling is disturbed, and it stays out of balance until fault is acknowledged and regret expressed.I remember a doctor friend, the late Clarence Lieb, telling me about a man who came to him with a variety of signs: headaches, insomnia and stomach trouble. No physical cause could be found. Finally Dr. Lieb said to the man, “Unless you tell me wha t’s worrying you, I can’t help you.”After some hesitation, the man confessed that, as executor of his father’s will, he had been cheating his brother, who lived abroad, of his inheritance. Then and there the wise old doctor madethe man write to his brother asking for forgiveness and enclosing a check as the first step in restoring their good relation. He then went with him to mail box in the corridor. As the letter disappeared, theman burst into tears. “Thank you,” he said. “I think I’m cured.” And he was. A heartfelt apology cannot only heal a damaged relationship but also make it stronger. If you can think of someone who deserves an apology from you, someone you have wronged, or judged too roughly, or just neglected, do something about it right now.41. When we have done something wrong, we should __________.A) look honest and think over the fault carefullyB) escape from being disturbedC) admit the fault and express the regretD) forgive ourselves42. These schools are primarily located in the Northeastern part of the country. There are eight total colleges that are considered to be Ivy League. These schools are Brown, Harvard, Cornell, Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, and Columbia universities and the University of Pennsylvania. Of all institutions of higher learning, these elite schools are considered to be the most outstanding and the most sought-after in terms of acceptance and graduation. The term “Ivy League” came about in 1954 when the NCAA athletic conference for Division I was formed. At the time, the elitism of these schools was really due to their prestige in the realm of sports like basketball. Although the term “Ivy League” was not created until the 1950s, many of these schools were in existence as far back as 1636, when John Harvard became the first benefactor of Harvard University.Although this group of elite schools is considered to be part of one big league of the elite, there have been plenty of internal rivalries over the years. The sports that these colleges play were so popular that some teams began playing games in New York City so spectators could come from far away and watch the games. The popularity of both the athletes who played and the college team rivalries brought in a good deal of attention to the schools as well as revenue from ticket sales. There have also been academic rivalries between schools. Mostly, these rivalries are a matter of opinion in terms of which school has the most honor graduates, which schools offer the most prestigious scholarships, and what famous graduates have come from each school. Each Ivy League college has its own unique accomplishments that make it important. All carry a certain reputation with them, and each school has programs that excel primarily in the medical and law fields, making them some of the most sought-after schools in the world. Their admission process is very selective, which helps the schools ensure that they only accept the best and brightest. Many famous people have graduated from IvyLeague schools, including recent presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. This prestige leads many to believe that these colleges are only for the wealthy and elite. Often, companies look for Ivy League graduates as potential employees, usually preferred by law firms, medical facilities, and large corporations. It has long beencovetedto have earned a degree from an Ivy League school. Today, the Ivy League schools are still excellent in both academia and in sports, and they have left a legacy of higher education with an exceptional track record and reputation to go along with them.4. What does the underlined word “coveted” in the last paragraph probably mean?A. advocatedB.DesiredC. restrictedD. sponsoredCEvery day in the United States animals are beaten, ignored, or forced to struggle for survival. Left in poor conditions with no food or water, they have little hope as they live out their days without the mercy they deserve. Some are found and rescued, given the chance to experience how great life and humans can be; others aren't so lucky. To grow as a nation, we must fight for these abused(受虐待的) animals’ rights and seriously punish heartless owners. One of the first steps in protecting animals and creating effective cruelty laws is to know what animal cruelty actually is. There are two categories: passive cruelty and active cruelty. The first involves acts of omission, meaning the abuse happens as a result of ignorance or lack of action. Passive cruelty might seem less serious, but that is not the case; it can lead to terrible pain and suffering, and finally death. Examples include starvation, inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and the failure to get medical care. Passive cruelty is sometimes due to the owner's ignorance, so many animal control officers will first try to educate ignorant owners on how to properly care for animals before giving them a citation(传票) or putting them in prison.Active cruelty, on the other hand, is more well-known and disturbing. Sometimes referred to as non-accidental injury, this type of abuse involves purposeful harm on an animal in order to feel more powerful or gain control. Active cruelty against animals should be taken very seriously, since it can be a sign that a person has serious psychological issues and may commit more acts of violence---possibly against humans. It is hard to tell just what drives people to harm innocent animals. Most animal abusers find some sort of achievement or power in torturing a victim that they know can't fight back. While not all animal abusers become serial killers, it is important to take every case seriously. As a nation we need to make it our right to come together and ensure the safety of our beloved pets. As Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”8. What is the first step to do with the passive cruelty abusers?A. To throw them into prison.B. To bring the case to the court.C. To teach them how to treat animals.D. To give them a strong warning.9. We can learn from Para.3 that active cruelty ______.A. is actually a sign of power or controlB. has been taken seriously in the nationC. may lead to serious psychological problemsD. may cause acts of violence against humans10. What is the author’s attitude towards animal cruelty?A. Uncertain.B. Doubtful.C. Concerned.D. Pessimistic.11. The author wrote this passage to ______.A. warn those heartless pet ownersB. tell people the harm of animal crueltyC. explain the reasons why people harm animalsD. call on people to fight for the abused animalsDJapan's prime minister encouraged the decision to ban viewers, even family members, by issuing a state of emergency order in Tokyo earlier this month in response to rising COVID-19 case numbers. From the perspective of sports psychologists, an Olympics without fans is a real-life science experiment that is helping researchers and clinicians to comb through the true impact of a crowd of fans on its players—and on viewers at home. The strange circumstances under which the games are held may place unexpected pressure on some athletes. On Tuesday, superstar gymnast Simone Biles dropped out of the women's team event, telling teammates and reporters she wasn't in the right “headspace” to compete. “It's been really stressful this Olympic Games. There are a lot of different variables going into it,” Biles told the Washington Post. The 2020 Summer Olympics bears similarities and differences to other major sporting events without viewers. The English Premier League supplemented (增加) game broadcasts with crowd noise from the soccer video game FIFA 20, mixed with game audio in real time. A Taiwanese baseball team and German soccer team began populating stands with cardboard cutouts of fans, and the trend caught on internationally.Jamey Houle, the lead sports psychologist for Ohio State University Athletics and a former Al-American gymnast, says competitive athletes are trained in visualization— imagining performing a certain action or motion, such as doing a roundoff back handspring in gymnastics. Without moving a muscle, players using visualization can solidify neural (神经的) connections and activate their motor cortex (皮层). To visualize most effectively, Houle says, athletes working with sports psychologists will try to simulate as closely as possible the conditions of actual gameplay. Empty stadiums may thus have a measurable impact on players' performance. This phenomenon is grounded in a psychological concept called “social facilitation”, referring to a change in a person's performance that occurs when others are around compared to when a person is alone.12. What caused Biles to drop out of the women's team event?A. The poor physical condition.B. The absence of the audience.C. The fiercely competitive event.D. The influence of crowds of fans.13. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?A. The Taiwanese baseball team is a success.B. The tendency mentioned is popular among some sporting events.C. The 2020 Summer Olympics is stricter in preventing the pandemic.D. The crowd noise plays a leading role in the English Premier League.14. How does Houle explain the impact of empty stadiums on players' performance?A. By doing a roundoff back handspring.B. By simulating the conditions of actual gameplay.C. By using the concept called social facilitation.D. By changing the viewers of a player.15. What message does the author mainly convey in the text?A. Athletes should be trained in visualization.B. Audience should be admitted to the Olympics.C. Social facilitation is helpful to sporting events.D. Viewers present may influence players' performance.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

His first job at the studio was writing captions (脚本)for silent movies. Within two years, he was writing scripts(剧本)and working as an assistant director. For the rest of the 1920s, Hitchcock worked on one film after another in Britain and Germany. Filming was often a rough-and-ready(匆忙做成的)affair and the assistant director was required to step in and plug gaps. A cameraman went missing, Hitchcock became a cameraman. A scene needed rewriting, Hitchcock rewrote it. Someone needed to be in charge of money when the film crew was on location, Hitchcock looked after the money. At the same time, this being the era of silent movies, Hitchcock was learning the language of cinema: telling a story -not through dialogue, but through visual images(视觉影象). This led to his success later. When he began to direct his own films, first in Britain and later in Hollywood, he was determined to make films that held the audience's attention and kept tension(紧张感). He succeeded. Recordedbackground music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the USA. Very soon it spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to background music. To begin with, background music was intended simply to create a soothing (舒适的)atmosphere. Recently, however, it's becoming a big business. An American marketing expert has shown that music can boost(提升)sales or increase factory production by as much as a third. But it has to be the light music. Lively music has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts(收入)by 34%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they would like to buy. Yet, slow music isn't always the answer. The expert found that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play faster music to keep the customers moving-unless, of course, the resulting indigestion(消化不良)leads to complaints.A(6)、Background music was first used in the factories, shops and restaurants in the USA.A:T B:FA(7)、An American marketing expert has found background music can increase sales or factory production. For nearly a century before there was such a thing as a space program, a view of space was possible. People could see detailed views of the Moon, explore Mars, and study the geometric beauty of Saturn’s rings. All of this was made possible by a small group of artist-astronomers who made a career of illustrating how other worlds in space might look.Lucien Rudaux, a French artist, was the first to combine his artistic talents with his knowledge of astronomy. His paintings show a mixture of skilled observations, brilliant imagination, and painstaking attention to detail. As a result, many of his works have come surprisingly close to actual conditions on distant planets. His painting of Mars included moonlike craters that were first photographed by the Mariner 4 Probe in 1965. He enjoyed unparalleled successes followed by major failures. At the beginning of the decade, he won seven Oscars for his epic western, Dances with Wolves, which he starred in and directed. Five years later came Waterworld. Set in an age when the polar ice caps have melted and most of the world is submerged, this fantasy film was the most expensive movie ever made at the time. The odd thing about Waterworld is that, while it is often cited as a film that lost millions of dollars, it actually turned a profit – eventually. Still, it was nominated for four Golden Raspberries – the awards for bad movies – and won two. Two years later, in 1997, Costner did even better (or, rather, worse) by winning a record five Razzies for The Postman.Cat-astrophic FailureThere are some films that are so awful that even their own stars are embarrassed to be associated with them. Catwoman falls into this category. Stepping up to accept her Razzie for worst actress in 2005, Halle Barry thanked the film company for putting her in an appalling movie. “It was just what my career needed,” she added, sarcastically. Berry’s joke was understandable – she had won the Oscar for best actress just four years earlier.43. When did Kevin Costner enjoy the most fame?a. Early 90s.b. Late 90s.c. Only in 1995.d. Only in 1997.44. According to the excerpt how many awards (good or bad) did Costner win in the 90s?a. 7.b. 14.c. 16.d. 17.45. How was Halle Barry sarcastic about her Golden Raspberry win?a. She made a joke about the Golden Raspberries.b. She expressed gratitude for her Oscar.c. She expressed appreciation for her role.d. No information is given.46. The word appalling is closest in meaning to which of the following?a. Polar.b. Epic.c. Embarrassed.d. Terrible.(B)Directions: Read the following excerpt from Communication Breakdown: Major Advertising Failures and answer the questions that follow.Mistaken IdentityWhat brand of batteries do you use in your TV remote control? Without looking, you probably don’t have a clue, right? The battery brand Energizer found out the hard way that a catchy ad campaign doesn’t necessarily tr anslate into a boost to sales when it failed to capitalize on a hugely popular series of commercials starting in the 1980s. At the time, the leading brand was Duracell, which had used a drum-playing rabbit called the Duracell Bunny as its mascot since the early 1970s. Seeing a chance to cash in on the back of this character, Energizer created its own Energizer Bunny which was shown outlasting Duracell’s bunny. There was not much to differentiate Energizer’s rabbit from Duracell’s (they gave him a pair of sh ades to make him look cooler), but the commercials were a hit with consumers, due in part to the light-hearted mocking of a competitor. The problem was, while everyone recognized the bunny and the campaign, hardly anyone knew which company was behind it. In fact, a study showed that 40 percent of people thought the Energizer ads were for Duracell. Furthermore, despite the popularity of the commercials, Energizer sales actually dropped.47. According to the excerpt what prompted Energizer to create the ads?a. It wanted to create a unique bunny.b. It wanted to make fun of itself.c. It wanted to make fun of its competitor.d. It wanted to create an international campaign.48. What problem or problems did Energizer encounter?a. People loved the ads but hated the product.b. People loved the ads but could recall the product.c. People felt bad that they copied the Duracell bunny.d. People were turned off by the bunny’s shades.49. Some of the greatest men in history had thought about the problem. One of them, for example, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. In the sixteenth century he made designs for machines that would fly, but they were never built.Throughout history, other less famous men had wanted to fly. An example was a man in England 800 years ago. He made a pair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumped into air from a tall building. He did not fly very far. Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body. The first real steps took place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, the Montgolfiers, made a very large "hot air balloon". They knew that hot air rises. Why not fill a balloon with it? The balloon was made of cloth and paper. In September of that year, the King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. The passengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt about the trip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that the animals landed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloon of the same kind. Their trip lasted twenty-five minutes and they traveled about eight kilometers.(1)、Leonardo Da Vinci made designs for flying machines. In 1920, barely out of his teens, Alfred Hitchcock went to work for an American film company which had opened a studio in Islington, London. At the same time, this being the era of silent movies, Hitchcock was learning the language of cinema: telling a story-not through dialogue, but through visual images(视觉影象). This led to his success later. When he began to direct his own films, first in Britain and later in Hollywood, he was determined to make films that held the audience's attention and kept tension(紧张感). He succeeded. Hitchcock's ability to put you on the edge of your seat makes him one of the greatest makers of suspense(悬念)movies.(1)、Alfred Hitchcock's first job at the studio was writing captions for silent movies. "Could you help me in the library?" she asked. I said, "Send him along."Soon, a golden-haired boy appeared. "Do you have a job for me?" he asked. I told him about a system for sorting books. He picked up the idea immediately. Then I showed him some cards for some unreturned books that I thought had been returned but not recorded. Maybe some books were put on wrong places. He said, "Is it a kind of a detective (侦探)job?" I answered yes, and then began his work.He had found three books with wrong cards by the time his teacher opened the door and said, "Time for rest!" he argued for finishing the finding job, but the teacher won.The next morning, he arrived early, "I want to finish these books," he said. At the end of a pleasant evening, his mother declared that the family would be moving to another school. Her son's first concern, she said, was leaving the library. "Who will find the lost books?" he asked. When the time came, it was hard to say goodbye. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. The Courage to Know OneselfA) I have had a lot of fear in my life. Much of the fear started when I was about nine years old and developed into an unbearable fear of dying. I would lie in bed at night, knowing that I was eventually going to lose everything I owned. Then I cherished l ife itself very much. “Why was I born if only to die?” was thequestion that plagued me. I literally could not sleep at night. And I could find no comfort from either of my parents. So I learned to deal with it by controlling my breath (I thought if I kept breathing, I would stay alive). This habitual activity deadened (使麻木) my spontaneity and inner freedom for decades to come.B) This issue wasn’t resolved until I finally faced death directly within myself and saw what I was really afraid of was not death, but aloneness – existential aloneness –being all alone forever. And when I opened to this aloneness, needing to know what it really was, my consciousness opened to my wholeness and my interconnectedness with all existence. And I have not been lonely or afraid in the way I used to be since that defining moment.C) This story exemplifies the underlying principle of courage. Having courage does not mean that one does not have fear. It means that one is willing to face fear – to face fear itself in order to know the truth about something. In a very real sense, one could say that fear is the separation from the truth, and that courage is the willingness to go through fear to get to the truth. All fears, then, refer back to the one fear that is our separation from the truth of who and what we really are – our true nature, our undivided and interconnected self.D) The word “courage” comes from Latin and French derivatives that mean “heart”. So when people ask me what courage is, I often tell them that it is heart-work, learning how to move through fear.E) Every little fear becomes a doorway to a larger, less fearful part of ourselves, if we can just allow ourselves to be open and vulnerable to it, curious about it –needing to understand it and having to know the truth. Every time we face a fear, we learn that we have the ability to move through fear, we become a little more courageous in our lives, and we get a little closer to the truth.F) I often say that the difference between a child and an adult is that the child retreats from fear – chooses to stay stuck in their fear of the fear whereas the adult faces fear –chooses to move through their fear of the fear, into and through the fear itself.G) So, in order to fully understand courage, we need to understand why we would choose to not face our fear, but to continue to be afraid of it. Why would we choose to stay stuck in a limited, tight, fearful place when we could be free and open and joyous?H) This, of course, is a huge question. But I think there are a few key things we can see that will be very useful. The first question that arises in this inquiry is, “What is it that we’re really afraid of, anyway?”I) There’s an old Jewish expression that translates roughly into “Don’t look too deep”. I think the expression is based on the belief that what is deepest inside of us is fundamentally not good – original sin (罪恶), the id, etc. So, if one should sincerely seek the truth, what he will ultimately discover is that one’s true nature is bad. And how could one live with that knowledge? And so we are afraid of looking into things for fear that we won’t like what we find. From my experience, however, what I have found to be deepest inside myself (and all beings) is pure love, compassion, wisdom, and und erstanding. It’s just a matter of looking deeply enough to see what’s there.J) We are also afraid of letting go of the known – what we have known. Even though we may be aware of our suffering, at least we are familiar with it. We may even have become comfortable with it in a peculiar sort of way. We have made a kind of pact with our suffering: “I won’t bother challenging you if you promise not to get any worse.” In essence, we are afraid to change because we have an unconscious belief that things will get worse if we let go of what we know. What I have learned, however, is that the only place where there is true peace is in the place of absolute letting go of what we have known. From this place, I am able to respond freely and directly to the circumstances of my life.K) We have taken on an identity, an image, a set of beliefs about what we and the surrounding world are all about. We see our lives through this set of beliefs. If we were to let go of these ideas about what reality is, we are afraid we would no longer know what is real. And that is a frightening prospect for us. We are afraid that our world would be chaotic and even terrifying. We are afraid that the universe is not a benevolent (慈善的) place.L) And so we cling desperately to a set of beliefs about who we are and what the world is. All the beliefs were created (primarily in an attempt to protect ourselves from experiencing pain) very early in our childhood, and are buried deep in our subconscious. These beliefs or self-images serve to separate us from the reality and are actually the source of all our fears and all our sufferings. It is only by challenging or inquiring into these beliefs that we can move through our fears and come to know our true, courageous, free, open, loving, and peacefu l self. The great poet, Rainer Maria Rilke once said, “The spiritual path is one of being defeated by greater and greater beings.” In the process of inquiring into, seeing into and letting go of our false selves, one’s awareness opens increasingly to the beauty and awe that is always present.M) One could then say that courage is being more committed to knowing the truth than protecting one’s cherished ideas and images about oneself and the world. What beliefs do you cling to? And are you courageous enough to challenge them?37)The author, based on his experience, believes that what lies the deepest inside of human beings is nothing but good qualities. I38)If we can absolutely let go of what we have know, we can find a place where there is true peace. J39)Kids and grown-ups respond differently in the face of fear. F40)Deeply-rooted in our mind since childhood, the beliefs about who we are and what the world is separate us from the reality and cause all our fears and sufferings. L41)What really frightened the author was the loneliness rather than death itself. B42)We are unwilling to change in life because we are preoccupied with the belief that things will change for the worse if we let go of what we have known. J 43)Facing fears can make us less fearful, more courageous and more likely to get to the truth. E44)We are afraid that we would be thrown into a chaotic and terrifying world if we give up the set of our beliefs. K45)Ever since childhood, the author has been subject to intense and irrational fear of dying. A46)Courage means the willingness to conquer fear to get to the truth. C参考答案:37) I 38) J 39) F 40) L 41) B 42) J 43) E 44) K 45) A 46) CDirections:Read the following passages carefully. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question. There is something grimly ridiculous as well as pathetic in themessy way we manage things in our crude attempt as civilization. While we are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars of the people’s money annually in improving the breed of pig, or in fighting cattle disease, we are neglecting the most valuable asset of all, the children of the nation. A million dollars of the people’s money can be spent upon a speedway so that rich people might have an opportunity of exercising their blooded stock, while not a penny can be found in the State appropriations (拨款) to find food for starving children. This foolish state of affairs was brought out in strong relief when the school teachers organized themselves into a relief committee to find ways and means for supplying food to the hungry children under their charge. This organization was brought about by the pitiable plight of the children, many of whom had become so weakened for lack of proper nourishment that they fainted at their desks while trying to study their lessons. The teachers have called their orga nization the “Children’s Relief Society,” and the day after the organization was perfected they were enabled to issuetickets to the most destitute (赤贫的) of the children which entitled them to immediate relief.Besides this effort on the part of the teachers, emergency measures for the relief of hundreds of pupils in other schools have been adopted by the committee of school board members. The newspapers reported that relief came in this case in the form of two soup kitchens which were opened and equipped so as to provide for hundreds of the starving children.Destitution has visited hundreds of families as the result of the business depression. Not only have the educational authorities taken up the matter, but various generous societies have begun active work for relieving the distress. All of which is excellent in every way, yet it is not enough; it does not go far enough, for it ought not to be left to charity, but ought to be made a State duty.47)We learn from the first paragraph that _____.A. we manage things well as civilizationB. we are rich enough to spend money freelyC. we need to care for the starving childrenD. rich people should exercise their blooded stock48)What motivated school teachers to organize the “Children’s Relief Soci ety”?A. The distressing situation of the children.B. The improper ways of supplying food to the children.C. The charge of food unaffordable for children.D. The weak performance of children in study.49)What would the Children’s Relief Society do after its establishment?A. They would provide food directly to poor children.B. They would teach lessons to poor children for free.C. They would give poor children tickets to get food.D. They would relieve poor children’s pressure.50)What other effort for the relief of children is mentioned in the passage?A. The committee of school board members has taken emergency measures.B. People from the newspapers have built soup kitchens to provide for starving children.C. The educational authorities have set up funds to provide help.D. Generous societies have adopted hundreds of pupils in schools.51)According to the passage, who should be most responsible for the relief of children’s starvation?A. The teacher.B. Children’s Relief Society.C. Charitable societies.D. The State.参考答案:47) C 48) A 49) C 50) A 51) DPeople often ask which is the most difficult language to learn, and it is not easy to answer because there are many factors to take into consideration. Firstly, in a first language the differences are unimportant as people learn their mother tongue naturally, so the question of how hard a language is to learn is only relevant when learning a second language.A native speaker of Spanish, for example, will find Portuguese much easier to learn than a native speaker of Chinese, for example, because Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, while Chinese is very different, so first language can affect learning a second language. The greater the differences between the second language and our first, the harder it will be for most people to learn. Many people answer that Chinese is the hardest language to learn, possibly influenced by the thought of learning the Chinese writing system, and the pronunciation of Chinese does appear to be very difficult for many foreign learners. However, for Japanese speakers, who already use Chinese characters in their own language, learning writing will be less difficult than for speakers of languages using the Roman alphabet. Some people seem to learn languages readily, while others find it very difficult. Teachers and the circumstances in which the language is learned also play an important role, as well as each learner's motivation for learning. If people learn a language because they need to use it professionally, they often learn it faster than people studying a language that has no direct use in their day to day life.Apparently, British diplomats and other embassy staff have found that the second hardest language is Japanese, which will probably come as no surprise to many, but the language that they have found to be the most problematic is Hungarian. This does not mean that Hungarian is the hardest language to learn for everyone, but it causes British diplomatic personnel, who are generally used to learning languages, the most difficulties.Different cultures and individuals from those cultures willfind different languages more difficult. In the case of Hungarian for British learners, it is not a question of the writing system, which uses a similar alphabet, but the grammatical complexity, though native speakers of related languages may find it easier, while struggling with languages that the British find relatively easy.52)Why is it hard to say which language is the most difficult to learn?A. Because people learn their mother tongue naturally.B. Because it is only relevant when learning a second language.C. Because many factors have to be considered.D. Because differences between languages are unimportant.53)Who will find Portuguese much easier to learn?A. A native speaker of ChineseB. A native speaker of JapaneseC. A native speaker of HungarianD. A native speaker of Spanish54)What is the most problematic language to British diplomats and other embassy staff?A. HungarianB. JapaneseC. SpanishD. Chinese55)Why do many people think Chinese is the hardest language to learn?A. Because Chinese uses the Roman alphabet.B. Because the grammar of Chinese is complex.C. Because the pronunciation of Chinese is difficult.D. Because Chinese is not directly used in their life.56)What factors cannot affect learning a second language according to the passage?A. first languageB. neighboring countriesC. teachers and the circumstancesD. each learner's motivation for learning 参考答案:52) C 53) D 54) A 55) C 56) B。

Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park.BPaper is an important part of modern life. People use it in school, at work, to make artwork and books, to wrap presents and much more. Trees are the most common material for paper these days.So how do people make paper out of trees today? People first cut trees, load them onto trucks and bring them to a factory. Machines cut open the outer coverings of the trees, and cut the trees into pieces. Those pieces are boiled into a soup. After that, it is hit flat, dried and cut up into sheets of paper. The entire process, from planting a small tree to buying your school notebook, takes a very long time. Just growing the trees takes 10 to 20 years.Making tons of paper from trees can harm the planet. Humans cut down 80, 000 to 160,000 trees around the world every day, and use many of them to make paper. Some of those trees come from tree farms. But people also cut down forests for paper, which means that animals and birds lose their homes.Cutting forests down also contributes to climate change, and paper factories pollute the air. After you throw paper, it often takes the paper six to nine years to break down. That's why recycling is important. It saves a lot of trees, slows climate change and helps protect endangered animals, birds and all creatures that rely on forests for their homes and food.So if paper isn't good for the environment, why don't people write on something else? The answer: They do. With computers, tablets and cellphones, people use much less paper than in the past. Maybe a day will come when we won't use paper at all — or will save it for very special books and artworks.4. Organic food sales reached a record of $ 45.2 billion in 2017, making it one of the fastest-growing parts of American agriculture. Some people may buy organic food for these reasons like resource cycling and biodiversity, but most people may choose organic food because they think it's healthier. While a small number of studies have shown relationships between eating organic food and reducing risks of being ill, no studies, up to now, have answered the question whether eating organic food can improve health.According to the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA), organic food does not suggest anything about health. In 20155 Miles McEvoy, then chief of the National Organic Program for the USDA, refused to admit any health benefits of organic food, saying the question has nothing to do with the National Organic Program. Instead, the USDA thinks that organic refers to a production method that increases cycling of resources keeps ecological balance, and protects biodiversity.I'm an environmental health scientist who has spent over 20 years studying pesticides that do harm to human beings. Several years ago, I was part of the study on whether an organic diet can reduce pesticide exposure. This study focused on a group of pesticides which have always been harmful to children's brain development. We found that children who ate traditional diets had nine times higher exposure to these pesticides than children who ate organic diets.Last month, I published a small study that suggested a path forward to answering the question whether eating organic food actually improves health. My study got a lot of attention. While the results were novel, they didn't answer the big question. As I toldThe New York Timesin 2003, “What does this really mean for the safety of my kids? But we don't know. Nobody does. It was true then, and it's still true now.”8. Why do most people prefer to buy organic food?A. For its health benefits.B. For biodiversity.C. For its delicious taste.D. For resource cycling.9. What does the USDA suggest about organic food?A. It can improve people's health.B. It is produced in an environment-friendly way.C. It can reduce risks of being ill.D. It has nothing to do with the National Organic Program.10. What can be concluded from the author's study?A. Pesticides don't harm children's brain.B. Traditional diets benefit people's health.C. Organic diets can reduce pesticide exposure.D. The results are meaningful to children's safety.11. What is the best title for the text?A.What Is Organic Food?B. Is Organic Food Healthier?C. How Should We Avoid Pesticides?D. What Are the Benefits of Organic Food?DBeing an Olympian (奥运会选手) demands focus, determination, and a competitive spirit. Plus, representing your country is a lot of pressure. However, two athletes recently showed the world another quality that is definitely worth championing.Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi were competing in the high jump on Sunday when they reached a stalemate (僵局). Both men had managed to jump over a surprising 2.37 meters with no faults along the way. However, after three attempts neither managed the next level of 2.39 meters. An Olympic official suggested ajump-offbetween the two friends and rivals (竞争对手) to determine who would get the gold medal. But Barshim had another plan to reward their efforts.“Can we have two golds?” he asked the official. The official agreed and the two men jumped for joy. This was the first time a gold medal had been shared since 1912. “He is one of my best friends, not only on the track, but outside the track. We work together. This is a dream come true.” shared Barshim. The decision to share the medal was particularly meaningful to Tamberi. The Italian had suffered an ankle injury that prevented him from competing in the Rio Olympics in 2016, and it nearly put an end to his career altogether. So this year he brought along his cast to this year's Olympics with “Road to Tokyo 2021” to inspire him along the way.For Barshim, the gold has topped off his already impressive medal collection, having received a bronze and asilver medal in 2012 and 2016 respectively.Despite all the glory of receiving a gold medal for their countries, their achievement means so much more. These two individuals, trying to do their very best for their countries, have provided a wonderful example to all those competing in sports. They've summed up exactly what it means to take part in a global event with a generous and compassionate (有同情心的) spirit.12. What happened to Barshim and Tamberi in the competition?A. They ended in a tie.B. They quit the competition.C. They set a new record.D. They ran out of strength.13. What does the underlined word “jump-off” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A. Debate.B. Vote.C. Celebration.D. Extra round.14. Why was the gold medal particularly meaningful to Tamberi?A. It could bring him a lot of money.B. It may make up for his regret in 2016.C. It was a glory for his country.D. It could complete his medal collection.15. What does the author mainly want to convey in the text?A. The importance of sharing.B. The glory of winning gold medals.C. The valuable and special team spirit.D. The considerate and sharing Olympic spirit.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

I wasn’t looking forward to it.I soon discovered, however, that living in a house without Wi-Fi was easier than I expected.Contact between my friends and family was significantly reduced to the odd text message here and there. I couldn’t enjoy my usual web browsing on BBC iPlayer, social media sites, keeping up to date with the news, or even wanting to know the opening hours of shops in the new area I was in.I didn’t, however, spend a full four months without connecting to a Wi-Fi network. It was only a five minute walk to the reception where I could connect for free and spend as much time online as I wanted to at my own leisure. It made me think , though , how unnecessary it can be , how unnecessarily we rely on it—how we perhaps rely on it too much. As a person, I was more sociable. I spent more time with my housemates instead of hiding behind a computer screen. I did other things that I wouldn’t necessarily have done if I could have browsed the web at my leisure. I read more, I cooked meals for my friends, and I even tidied up more often. Dare I say it; I learned how to live without Wi-Fi. Dare I say it; I found it was easier than I had imagined.4. The valuable and special team spirit.D. The considerate and sharing Olympic spirit.DFor as long as I can remember, my body and I have shared a relationship of discontent. Growing up, I was skinnier than the other kids and at five I was told I wasn't attractive and that I must put on some weight. But no matter how much I ate, I stayed thin for years until adolescence. Then I started putting on weight almost immediately. I remember feeling happy as I began to fill out. However, my joy didn't last long.I was thirteen when I was first called fat. Friends and neighbours would make jokes on my big size. As I entered my late teens, I had completely lost confidence in my body and, subsequently, in myself. Having failed to live up to conventional beauty standards, I was convinced that if I wanted to be loved, I needed to offer more, doing anything to please everyone around.I entered adulthood thinking I wasn't “enough”—an idea that was seeded not only by the fact that “skinny” is celebrated, but also by the language associated with accounts of losing weight—selfimprovement, discipline—all virtues. Being fat quickly categorizes you as lazy and undisciplined. Consumed by thoughts of the way my bodylooked, I didn't notice the other ways my body needed attention. I failed to realize, for example, that my period was much heavier and more painful than ever before. Actually I developed a rare disease and later I had two surgeries.I was always made to feel that my weight was the root of a lot of problems in my life; I have learnt this is not true. After a lot of selfreflection and some professional help, I realized I never learnt to like myself. While two decades of selfhatred cannot be undone overnight, I have taken first steps to acceptance.I am now much lighter than before, in body and mind. There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am, opinions at the end of the day are just water off a duck's back.12. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?A. She could change her weight at will.B. She had different beauty standards from others.C. She tried to love others to build her confidence.D. She was greatly influenced by others' opinions.13. Why did the author think she wasn't “enough”?A. She was poorly disciplined.B. She failed to celebrate “skinny”.C. She was labelled as lazy for her weight.D. She put on more weight after entering adulthood.14. What caused the author to make a change?A. Her lighter body.B. A troublesome illness.C. Popular beauty standards.D. Others' critical comments.15. What is the best title for the text?A. Beauty matters.B. Opinions vary.C. Worth your weight.D. Beyond your limits.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Unit 1 Education: A Transformation of the Soul1On my first day of high school, my teacher showed the class a Power Point presentation entitled The Value of Education. The first slide read simply this: “Education = $”. I felt uncomfortable, not knowing exactly why.2 Education, throughout my high school experience, continued to be described to me like this: college means a diploma. A diploma means a better job. A better job means more money. More money means a good life. But I wondered who had decided the criteria for a “better” job and a “good” life. It all seemed so mathematical. Education was presented to me as an equation equaling a person I had not chosen to be.重点单词的句子翻译:1.她读了一首题为《想起你》的诗。

(entitle)3.教育的关键在于激励和享受,而不是一所学校或一个大学文凭。

(diploma)5.我自己成功的标准是能够努力工作和快乐生活。

(criteria)3 I went on to college, of course, as everyone told me to do. College is how you become an earner, they told me. My major that first semester was International Relations. I liked the woman I envisioned myself as in this field – a diplomat, a savvy citizen of the world. But gradually I began to realize that this person was not someone I bore any resemblance to. She was, rather, a clone of the well-educated, well-moneyed ideal my teacher had presented to me years ago. This woman had earning potential; she was smart and worldly. But she was not someone I would become. She had nothing I really wanted.重点单词的句子翻译:1.我不敢想象他能做出这种可怕的事。

(resemblance)6. 她长得不像她母亲。

(resemblance)4 My moment of clarity soon came. I was watching a film with my family and laughing at all the historical errors in it, but I suddenly realized that there was something I did love, something I had brushed aside in my mind for years because it did not fit with the marketable, diploma-holding job applicant I had always assumed I should become.5I am, as it so happens, the daughter of passionate history buffs. My family never took vacations; we took field trips. I had not yet learned to walk when I first visited Abraham Lincoln’s house in Springfield, Illinois. Since then I have seen the homes of countless dead presidents. I have wandered through more museums than I can remember.6These memories are priceless to me; no matter how much I teased my parents about the fact that we never went to Disney World, I would not have changed our trips for anything in the world. I knew what education was, in my childhood, before someone damaged it with images of dollar signs. Education was how I had adventures. Education was my family’s escape.重点单词的句子翻译:1.她对野生花卉产生了浓烈的兴趣。

(adventure)7 The truth is I love American history. George Washington is not a legendary hero to me but a brave war veteran upon whose simple tomb I saw my grandfather, another war veteran, lay a wreath. Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello is not for me a name in a textb ook; it is a beautiful retreat, nestled deep in the Virginia mountains.8“Why am I not a history major?” I asked that night while the movie was on commercial break.9“Um, because you can’t make any money that way?” responded my sister.重点单词的句子翻译:1.那个小村庄坐落在山脚下。

(nestle)2.听说你获得了成功,我们真是兴奋极了。

(thrill)3.电影《泰坦尼克》让观众如此激动,很多人都哭了起来。

(thrill)4.孩子们看到自己喜欢的卡通形象都会兴奋不已。

(thrill)10 I transferred into an American history class that next semester. I was never absent. It was like taking a childhood field trip. The ‘A’ marks I got on every paper and every test were more to me than any good grade I had ever gotten before – here, finally, was something meaningful. I was thrilled by my increasing understanding of fascinating history concepts, and by the fact that I was becoming someone I wanted to be.11 I also took an English history course. The professor was a fascinating speaker and thoroughly knowledgeable on his subject. He told anecdotes about Charles II; he could quote the unemployment rates of Victorian London like they were his own children’s birthdays. This professor, I realized, possessed more than a pile of diplomas. And what he was helping me to achieve was so much more than a degree. He had –and I was acquiring– a mind exercised by many years’ studious dedication. And that –unlike money or a job – is something which cannot be lost.重点单词的句子翻译:1.杰克逊先生举了个病重住院老先生的例子。
