Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a wonderful old man who loved everything:animals, spiders, insects...One day while walking through the woods the nice old man found a cocoon(茧)of a butterfly. He took it home. A few days later, a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then came out with ease. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled(萎缩的)wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the kind-hearted man did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Nature's way of forcing fluid(液体)from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through our life without any hardships, it would fail us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly.【写作内容】1.

Volunteering in Nursing HomesAccording to the National Center for Health Statistics,“Over 50% of those living in nursing homes do not have close relatives and 46% have n o living children.” Life in a nursing home is lonely, confusing, and frightening for many residents.Volunteering at a nursing home is a great opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life.Playing cards, sitting with and talking to a resident, taking a walk,or sharing a meal makes a huge difference, especially when they have no other sole on earth to visit them. The three examples above are only a small fraction of institutions in which volunteers are needed.Giving of oneself, especially during the holidays blesses and cheers others.【语篇解读】本文介绍了人们在假期中可以选择去做志愿活动的三个地方。

At night the man had to carry a red lamp.Once Charles Rolls brought a car from France to England, but he wanted to drive faster than four miles an hour. In order to have no trouble with the police, he had a talk with some of the police officers, who ordered their policemen to look the other way when the car came along the road. This was a good plan in the country, but not so easy to follow in the busy streets of London. One night Rolls and some friends started from London on their journey to Cambridge. Rolls was getting ready to jump into the car, but then he noticed a policeman who was not looking the other way. The slow car reached him. “Good evening,” said the policeman, looking at the car.“Good evening,” said Rolls, holding the lamp.“One of these horseless things,” said the policeman, looking at it with interest.“Yes,” said Rolls, and waited.“I’ve often wanted a ride in one, but of course policemen can’t buy things like that.” He turned and looked hopefully in Rolls’s face.“Jump in,” said Rolls.“Thanks,” said the policeman, and did so. “Now,” he said, sitting down, “You can let it go just as you like down this hill.

AFifty has never looked better. It’s been 50 years since the first James Bond film, Dr. No, premiered (首映) in cinemas. As first embodied by Scottish actor Sean Connery, Agent 007 was a fearless, cool-as-ice spy who excelled at sleuthing(侦查), fighting and saving the world.Since then, more than 20 films featuring the iconic spy have been released–making it one of the longest-running franchises (授权) in the history of cinema. On Nov 9, the 23rd Bond movie, Skyfall, celebrated the legend’s 50th birthday.Over the years, audiences have changed. It doesn't matter. Six different actors have acted 007 and it doesn't matter. Even shocking technological and cultural cha nges can’t bend Bond. Why? Is it the action, the sexy women, the cars, the gadgets and the exotic locations? Yes, but the most important reason is still the man himself. Bond can challenge his boss and shoot a bad guy in mere minutes. He is an expert in literature, languages, art and fine wines. He has a sharp tongue besides his wits.In the first film Dr. No, as Connery lit a cigarette, we heard James Bond’s voice and saw his café for the first time. The simple scene and short phrase have defined the character for half a century.“Next to the Beatles and Stones, James Bond was the greatest British import of the 1960s,” David Kamp, a US contributing editor for Vanit y Fair, wrote in a recent article about the birth of Bond and its influence on the US.The Bond phenomenon has clearly affected movie culture, pop culture and spy culture. But perhaps the most amazing thing is that 007 has survived in the age of feminism(女权主义). “Talking of objectifying women, Bond is essential Huge Henfner (founder of Playboy magazine) with a gun,” movie critic Xan Brooks told The Guardian. “But women liked Bond, too. He couldn’t have run for 50 years with male fans alone.”We love Bond for many reasons—after all 50 years, Bond is still breathtaking. thrilling ride into the very heart of an icon like no other. But most of all, we may love him for one reason: “he always gets away with it.” one said.【文章大意】本文叙述了詹姆斯邦德电影50年来一直受欢迎。

ALONDON (Reuters) — Children are dying for lack of drugs tailored to their needs, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which launched a global campaign on Thursday to promote more research into child medicine.More than half of the drugs currently used to treat children in the industrialized world have not been specifically tested on youngsters. The problem is even worse in developing countries where price remains a major barrier and 6 million children die each year from treatable conditions. In the case of HIV/AIDS, the few existing pediatric therapies(儿科的疗法)developed for children generally cost three times more than adult ones.As a result, clinicians lack clear guidelines on the best drug to use and often have to guess at the correct dose.Fortunately, the WHO has drawn up the first international List of Essential Medicines for Children, containing 206 products considered safe for children.“But a lot remains to be done. There are priority medicines that have not been adapted for children’s use or are not available when needed,” said Dr Hans, the U.N. agency’s director of medicines policy and standards.Medicines that need to be adapted to children’s needs include many antibiotics, pain drugs as well as combination pills for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The agency is building an Internet entrance linking to clinical trials carried out in children and will launch a Web site with the information early next year.Testing medicines on children has always been a controversial issue, since good ethical (伦理的)practice requires informed agreement from people participating in clinical trials, which is difficult to obtain in the case of children. As a result, research-based drug companies have been wary of developingchild-friendly medicines and general companies have been slow to produce them at lower cost.In an attempt to deal with the issue, both Europe and the United States now have special rules offering extended patent protection for drugs that have been tested on children.

He feels that nowadays there are not many jobs for engineers in Pakistan and fresh engineers face challenges to be employed in famous companies, so he wants to be in competition by learning Chinese language as thousands more jobs are expected to be created under the CPEC project.“The One Belt and One Road (一带一路) has helped to create 200,000 jobs, out of which 75,000 are in Pakistan through the CPEC,” said Zhao Lijian, deputy mission chief of China’s embassy in Pakistan. “A few years ago, only around 2,000 people in Pakistan were learning Chinese, and now the number is over 25,000,” said Senator Mushahid Syed, chairman of an Institute. “Many universities in Pakistan have made Chinese language a necessary subject for students and a number of institutes in all provinces of the country are offering Chinese language classes.” Chinese language learning is not only limited to students, but many working women and men are learning the language as the third language after local language Urdu and English.Analysts (分析家们) believe that learning Chinese language for Pakistani people is more than just finding job opportunities to get material benefits. Yasir Masood, an analyst of an Institute on the CPEC, has his opinion, “When we talk about connectivity (互联互通), it is not just about the roads, but also cultural connectivity which brings the two nations together. Italy will use this opportunity to cooperate with China to develop its northern ports and the InvestItalia program, and promote cooperation in all fields.Despite some skepticism, the BRI has developed into one of the world’s largest cooperation platforms and become a hot public good. More than 120 countries and 29 international organizations have signed agreements with China up to date, bringing all sorts of development opportunities to parties of the BRI, including the construction of Kenya’s first high-speed expressway, the first cross-sea bridge in the Maldives, and the formation of the car industry in Belarus. The inclusion of Italy into the BRI makes Italy the first G7 country to formally join the Initiative, and sets a new milestone in the process of building the Belt and Road. What makes the BRI unique is that it is an initiative for win-win cooperation rather than zero-sum competition. As everyone knows, the BRI has its origin in the ancient Silk Road trade route that linked China with many places in the world, including the Italian cities of Rome and Venice. Italy is a natural fit for the ambitious project because of its historical connections with China, and also because of the need to be open rather than closed, to cooperate rather than confront. In this fast-changing world, seeking win-win progress is the best path forward for all countries. In China, it is said that without a big breakthrough in thinking, there will be no big leap in practice; and without a big leap in practice, there will be no great development. A number of Chinese ideas and initiatives have been formed with the goal of building a community of common destiny in mind. Under the BRI, we can expect China to deepen policy coordination, facilities connectivity, free trade, financial integration, and people-to-people bonds. The revival of China as a great power is a blessing to the world, contributing to the building of a better world. 9.How does the author develop the second paragraph?A.By giving examples.B.By making comparisons.C.By reasoning and analyzing.D.By describing important events.10.What can we learn from the last but one paragraph?A.China has become a superpower.B.China puts others’ interests before its own.C.China has been seeking development for all.D.China is well-known for its traditional ideas.11.What does the underlined part “zero-sum competition” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Only one participant will win.B.None of the participants will win.C.All participants will gain something.D.Some participants will win at the cost of others.12.What is best title of the passage?A.The revival of China as a great powerB.Construction along ancient trade routesC.A milestone in building BRI has beensetD.Italy and China reached an agreement on BRI三、话题语法填空阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式.Chinese tea gains popularity in BRI countriesHuang Shenghui, an inheritor (继承者)of the Wuyi rock tea-making technique in eastern China’s Fujian Province, 13 (see) his business, especially tea exports, 14 (grow) in recent years. He now sells Wuyi rock tea, a type of oolong tea, to 10 countries 15 (include) Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, Britain, the United States and Australia. His success all started nearly twenty years ago 16 Huang went to Kuala Lumpur with 30kg of tea in 2001.“It was like an adventure since I had never been abroad and didn’t know 17 foreign languages. 阅读理解-说明文基础题一、阅读理解。
Passage 1You've heard that plastic is polluting the oceans—between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin V on Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to reexamine their relationship to singleuse plastic products. At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called “Strawpocalypse”,a pair of 10foottall plastic waves, frozen midcrash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source(来源) of plastic pollution, but they've recently come under fire because most people don't need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that's part of V on Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear. In a piece from 2018, V on Wong wanted to illustrate(说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled “Truckload of Plastic”,V on Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they'd been dumped(倾倒) from a truck all at once.V on Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.() 1. What are V on Wong's artworks intended for?A. Beautifying the city he lives in.B. Introducing ecofriendly products.C. Drawing public attention to plastic waste.D. Reducing garbage on the beach.() 2. Why does the author discuss plastic straws in Paragraph 3?A. To show the difficulty of their recycling.B. To explain why they are useful.C. To voice his views on modern art.D. To find a substitute for them.() 3. What effect would “Truckload of Plastic” have on viewers?A. Calming.B. Disturbing.C. Refreshing.D. Challenging.() 4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Artists' Opinions on Plastic SafetyB. Media Interest in Contemporary ArtC. Responsibility Demanded of Big CompaniesD. Ocean Plastics Transformed into SculpturesPassage 2During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction(干扰) in his open office, he said, “That's why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street—so I can focus.” His comment struck me as strange. After all, coworking spaces also typically use an open office layout(布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his approach works. The researchers examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups and exposed to various noise levels in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels(分贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels. The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group—those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop—significantly outperformed the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise. But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise—not too loud and not total silence—may actually improve one's creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to wander, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of “distracted focus” appears to be the best state for working on creative tasks. So why do so many of us hate our open offices? The problem may be that, in our offices, wecan't stop ourselves from getting drawn into others' conversations while we're trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that facetoface interactions and conversations affect the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.() 5. Why does the interviewer prefer a coworking space?A. It helps him concentrate.B. It blocks out background noise.C. It has a pleasant atmosphere.D. It encourages facetoface interactions.() 6. Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability?A. Total silence.B. 50 decibels.C. 70 decibels.D. 85 decibels.() 7. What makes an open office unwelcome to many people?A. Personal privacy unprotected.B. Limited working space.C. Restrictions on group discussion.D. Constant interruptions.() 8. What can we infer about the author from the text?A. He's a news reporter.B. He's an office manager.C. He's a professional designer.D. He's a published writer.Passage 3Hundreds of scientists, writers and academics sounded a warning to humanity in an open letter published last December: Policymakers and the rest of us must engage openly with the risk of global collapse. Researchers in many areas have projected the widespread collapse as “a credible scenario(情景) this century”.A survey of scientists found that extreme weather events, food insecurity, and freshwater shortages might create global collapse. Of course, if you are a nonhuman species, collapse is wellunderway. The call for public engagement with the unthinkable is especially germane in this moment of stilluncontrolled pandemic and economic crises in the world's most technologically advanced nations. Not very long ago, it was also unthinkable that a virus would shut down nations and that safety nets would be proven so disastrously lacking in flexibility. The international scholars' warning letter doesn't say exactly what collapse will look like or when it might happen. Collapseology, the study of collapse, is more concerned with identifying trends and with them the dangers of everyday civilization. Among the signatories(签署者) of the warning was Bob Johnson, the originator of the “ecological footprint” concept, which measures the total amount of environmental input needed to maintain a given lifestyle. With the current footprint of humanity, “it seems that global collapse is certain to happen in some form, possibly within a decade, certainly within this century,” Johnson said in an email.Only if we discuss the consequences of our biophysical limits, the December warning letter says, can we have the hope to reduce their “speed, severity and harm”. And yet messengers of the coming disturbance are likely to be ignored. We all want to hope things will turn out fine. As a poet wrote,Man is a victim of dope(麻醉品)In the incurable form of hope. The hundreds of scholars who signed the letter are intent(执着) on quieting hope that ignores preparedness. “Let's look directly into the issue of collapse,” they say, “and deal with the terrible possibilities of what we see there to make the best of a troubling future.”() 9. What does the underlined word “germane” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Scientific.B. Credible.C. Original.D. Relevant.()10. As for the public awareness of global collapse, the author is ________.A. worriedB. puzzledC. surprisedD. scared()11. What can we learn from this passage?A. The signatories may change the biophysical limits.B. The author agrees with the message of the poem.C. The issue of collapse is being prioritized.D. The global collapse is well underway.
2014高考英语阅读理解二轮基础训练题(12)及答案[社会生活型阅读理解(一)]-----(一)I've spent over a year in India, and in those 365 plus days, I've learned a lot about getting around Indian cities. My biggest lessons have been learned through being cheated, particularly by taxi and rickshaw (人力车) drivers, but that doesn't mean those are bad ways to travel, as long as you know what you're doing. Below are the best ways to get around the city of Delhi, India, and tips for how to keep from being the victim of scams (欺诈).Taking taxis is a great way to get around the city of Delhi and chances are, if you arrive in Delhi by plane, as soon as you make it through customs, you'll be swarmed by Indian taxi drivers. At the Delhi airport, be sure to arrange for a taxi to your hotel at one of the two Delhi Traffic Police Taxi Booths. One is inside the airport, and one is outside. The key is to make sure to go to a booth run by the police, rather than by independent taxi drivers.Rickshaws are one of my favourite ways to get around Indian cities, in part because it's how the locals often travel. Autorickshaws are more common, but bicycle rickshaws are still used in Old Delhi. If you do have a chance to take a bicycle rickshaw, you should do it at least once for a unique experience that should only set you back about 15 rupees. Autorickshaw rates around Delhi range between 30 and 80 rupees, depending on the distance. If you really want to travel around Delhi like the locals, take a public bus. Indian buses become very crowded and most do not have air conditioning. They are, however, very cheap. A bus trip won't set you back any more than 15 rupees, as long as you stay within the city limits. Many of us use a lift several times during the day without really thinking about it。
But Lee Gray, PhD, of the University of North Carolina,US, has made it his business to examine this overlooked form of public transport. He is known as the “Elevator Guy”。
“The lift becomes this interesting social space where etiquette (礼仪)is sort of odd (奇怪的)," Gray told the BBC。
“They [elevators]are socially very interesting but often very awkward places。
"We walk in and usually turn around to face the door. If someone else comes in,we may have to move. And here, according to Gray, liftusers unthinkingly go through a set pattern of movements. He told the BBC what he had observed。
He explained that when you are the only one inside a lift, you can do whatever you want – it's your own little box.If there are two of you, you go into different corners, standing diagonally (对角线地)across from each other to create distance. When a third person enters, you will unconsciously form a triangle。

高考英语阅读理解二轮基础训练题(14)[人物型阅读理解]----- (二)American actor Johnny Depp can best be described as unconventional. From his early life, his path into acting and even in his choice of movie roles,we can see that Depp has seldom taken the easy road. His willingness to take risks and do the unexpected has made Depp one of the few Hollywood actors able to achieve huge commercial success while maintaining his artistic reputation.Born in 1963,Depp was somewhat troublesome as a youth, occasionally turning to petty crime and drugs. When his parents divorced in 1978,Depp dropped out of school against his mother's wishes and started a music band called the Kids.Although the band achieved some success, they were seldom able to make_ends_meet,with Depp often unable to pay his rent, sleeping rough on friends' sofas and even in his car.In 1983,the everoptimistic Depp and his new wife,Lori Anderson, moved to Hollywood California to further Depp's m usical career. But life there continued to be a struggle and Depp was forced to take a job selling pens door to door to support his new family. His luck changed when Lori's exboyfriend, the fam ous actor Nicholas Cage, impressed by Depp's good looks and intelligence, suggested he become an actor and helped him get a small part in a movie.Several other minor movie roles—and a divorce from Lori—followed, before Depp got his big break three years later. He landed the leading role in the television series 21 JumpStreet, playing a youthful undercover police officer. The hugely popular sho w turned Depp into a teenage heartthrob overnight. He appeared on the cover of countless magazines and was much sought after by movie producers, eager to exploit his popularity with teenage girls. But Depp left 21 JumpStreet after three years, w hen it was at the height of its popularity, later admitting that he hated the show's unoriginal storylines and his “pretty boy” character. In the decade that followed,Depp rejected repeated offers of “pretty boy” roles in big budget Hollywood films.Instead he established himself as a serious, somewhat dark, peculiar performer, consistently selecting roles in smaller, independent films that surprise critics and audiences alike.Even in the movie that made Depp an international superstar,ThePiratesoftheCaribbean(2003),he was barely recognizable as Captain Jack Sparrow, the British, longhaired goldentoothed pirate(海盗).This and subsequent(随后的) hit movies have placed Depp at the very top of the commercial film industry (with a paycheck of $20 million for each such movie) but he still co ntinues to make the smaller, stranger films for which he is so greatly admired.1.As a youth,Depp could be described as a ________.A. serious criminalB. trouble makerC. drug addictD. successful musician2.The underlined expression “make ends meet” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “________”.A. get together after a showB. meet their audienceC. play to the endD. earn enough to live3.
