Go up to mount Omei, and go down to Baoding Shan. The spots of rock carvings at Baoding Shan, Beishan, Nan Shan, Shizhuanshan and Shimenshan have been tourist resorts since ancient times. 14 km away from Dazu County ,stone caring on Mount Baoding were created from 1179 to 1249 in the South Song Dynasty. The person in charge was Zhao Zhifeng, who was born in Xueliang township of Dazu County, several km away from mount Baoding. He became a monk when he was five, and moved to the western part of Sichuan Province to learn Buddhism when he was 16.Then he returned home and had the Buddhism “Daochang”built under his care. He dedicated his following 70 years to this course until he passed away at eh age of 90,when the forest of statues was completed at a preliminary level. The Buddha Bay we are seeing now is the major part of the stone carvings on mount Baoding.
Baoding Shan, Which has come to be known as the Mountain of Efficacy{efikes} under Heaven world, receive tens of thousands of visitors and tourists on the 19th of the second month of each Chinese lunar year, the date said to be the birthday of Thousand-Armed Awalokitesvara.
This is a very famous statue on Mount Baoding. According to the Buddhist doctrine, Avalokitesvara (Goddess of Mercy) can relieve the people of all sufferings, that is, the Avalokitesvara is an Almighty Bodhisattva. The Mi Sect built the Avalokitesvara with a thousand arms to show that she has unconstrained power and can save the ordinary people. There is one eye in each hand. It implies that she looks on the whole world, has eyes sharp enough to perceive the minutest detail and has supreme wisdom.
This shrine is 7.20 meters high, and the statue is 12.50 meters wide, covering an area of 88 m. Avalokitesvara is 3 meters tall and behind the statue there are about 800 arms stretching like the feathers of a peacock. The gestures are of various kinds and there is no similarity between any two. Each hand has one eye and holds a musical instrument used in a Buddhist mass. It is gilded all over and stand magnificent, making people dazzled and overwhelmed by the grandeur. According to the creed of Buddhims, Avalokitesvara with 8 hands and more than 8 hands can be called Avalokitesvara with a thousand hands. But there is no other Avalotitesvara under the sun with more hands than the one at Baoding Moutain that covers an area of 88 m. In the past, people in Sichuan Province said that they went to worship on Baoding just to pay homage to eh Goddess of Mercy with a thousand hands. Thousands of devotees covered tens or hundreds of km to come here to burn incense and pray for good luck.
At first sight, people will think they are beyond enumeration. This is much wiser than a regular arrangement, such as 100 hands a row and 1000 hands ten rows. In this way this statue has achieved an endless artistic effect. The modeling of hands is also marvelous. According to the doctrine of Buddhism, the Bodhisattva has 32 images, soft and gentle fingers and plump sole. These fingers are slender and tender like those of beauties. Many female dancers come here to observe the beautiful hands of
