Things weren’t bad;they were good.A hundred yards away was Summit Lake.It was beautiful. We fired up the camp stove and boiled up a cup of coffee.Half an hour later,my 6-year-old daughter and I were in the parking lot of the Lassen Peak Trail, getting ready to hike.We wouldn’t make it all the way—young legs get pretty tired on a steep mountain path—but it didn’t matter. We would see great views spread out below us,the volcanic(火山的)ash that layered on the earth turning the melting snow a mysterious pink as the sun struck it.Later, during the hike,I felt stupid about my morning complaints.Everything had been worthwhile. It gave me great satisfaction to see my daughter so excited about the view from the mountain.Yes,camping is uncomfortable. But there’s also something wonderful about being so close to nature.Just as importantly, there’s someth ing about getting young children out of their increasingly technology-filled comfort zones and forcing them to experience the non-cyber(没有网络的)world around them. It’s a good thing to reconnect every so often with the Great Outdoors.28. Other days, I feel a sense of expectation within me just thinking about fall that makes me want to burst. Tonight, all five of us were in the family room doing our own things. At this moment, my littlest kid is my number one trouble and my number one joy. He has a tooth on the way and although it’s such a tiny thing, it’s causing so much grief. I’m holding him alot and I’m not going to lie. I live for his afternoon nap(小睡) so I’m able to actually get dressed and use the restroom. The big E is starting school soon. The other day, I found myself a bit depressed about the end of summer and the beginning of another school year. I looked out of our front window with eyes that were heavy and a bit teary. Then, I suddenly realized just how silly this end of summer depression of mine is. I can't change time. But, I can change my emotions and my thoughts. I decided not to spend my final days of summer vacation walking around with a sad face. I decided to hug the last few days of summer and remind myself that before I know it, we will be back in our school routine and all will go well. This week we plan on meeting teachers. I'm taking my girl to have her nails done before her first day of kindergarten. We want to bake a few dozen cookies. We'll take our evening walks as usual and stay up late. And last but not least, I’ll get school clothes ready, I’ll pack lunches and write lunch notes, we’ll read “The Kissing Hand,” like we normally do, and I’ll tuck(掖好被子) my third grader and kindergartener in their little beds before the big first day.Thank you summer, you’ve been warm and wonderful, you’ve been sweet and sticky, you’ve been refreshing and exactly what we need. And your sunsets have been amazing, so thank you.21. According to Paragraph 1, the author ___________.A. feels excitedB. has bad feelingsC. feels worriedD. has mixed feelings22. How will the author spend the final days of the summer vacation?A. Live a simple life.B. Stay at home and relax herself.C. Treasure the vacation.D. Walk around with a depressed face.23. From the passage, we can learn that the author ___________.A. is fond of reading novelsB. often takes evening walksC. has two annoying childrenD. has no time to get dressedBAll you have is what you bring with youI’ve always felt a need to be prepared for whatever situation I’ve found m yself in.My mother once took me to a store when I was seven years old. She and I got to the checkout counter, and she realized she had forgotten a couple of things on her shopping list. She left me with the cart and ran off to get what she needed.“I’ll be right back.” she said. She was gone just a few minutes, but in that time, I had loaded all the things on the belt and everything was rung up. I was left staring at the cashier, who was staring at me. “Do you have money for me, son?” she said. “I’ll need to be paid.”I didn’t realize she was just trying to amuse herself. So I stood there, ashamed and embarrassed.By the time my mom returned, I was angry. “You left me here with no money! This lady asked me for the money, and I had nothing to give her!”Now that I’m an adult, you'll never catch me with less than $200 in my wallet. I want to be prepared in case I need it.I’ve always admired people who are over-prepared. In college, I had a classmate named Norman. One day he was giving a presentation on an overhead projector and in the middle of his talk, the light bulb (灯泡) on the projector blew out. We would have to wait ten minutes until someone found a new projector.“It’s Okay.” he announced. “There’s nothing to worry, about.”We watched him walk over to his bag and pull something out. He had brought along a spare bulb for the overhead projector. Who could even think of that?I often told my students, “When you go into the wilderness, the only thing you can depend on is what you take with you.” And essentia lly, the wilderness is anywhere but your home or office. So take money. Pack a light bulb. Be prepared.24. Why did the cashier ask a seven-year-old boy to pay for the purchases?A. The boy was shopping by himself.B. The cashier was playing a joke on him.C. He lost face in front of the cashier.D. He had just quarreled with the cashier.26. Why did Norman bring a spare bulb with him?A. He was always well-prepared.B. His presentation was about bulbs.C. He knew the classroom equipment was of poor quality.D. He predicted the bulb on the projector would blow out.27. What do the two stories tell us?A. Accidents happen almost every day.B. Money is the key that opens all doors.C. In fair weather, prepare for a rainy day.D. Chances favor those who are well-prepared.CA bargain is something offered at a low and advantageous price. A more recent definition is: a bargain is a dirty trick to force money out of the pockets of silly and innocent people. The cost of producing a new-for example - toothpaste would make 80p the proper price for it, so we will market it at £1.20. It is not a bad toothpaste, and as people like to try new things it will sell well to start with; but the attraction of novelty soon fades, so sales will fall. When that happens we will reduce the price to £1.15. And we will turn it into a bargain by printing 5p OFF all over it.Sometimes it is not 5p OFF but 1p OFF. What breathtaking rudeness to advertise 1p OFF your soap or washing powder or whatever! Even the poorest old-age pensioner ought to regard this as an insult(侮辱), but he doesn't. A bargain must not be missed. People say one has to have washing powder (or whatever) and one might as well buy it a penny cheaper. The real danger starts when unnecessary things become ‘bargains’. Many people just cannot resist bargains. Provided they think they are getting a bargain they will buy clothes they will never wear or furniture they have no space for. Once I heard of a man who bought an electric saw as a bargain and cut off two of his fingers the next day. But he had no regrets: the saw had been truly cheap.Quite a few people actually believe that they make money on such bargains. A lady once told me: “I’ve had a lucky day today. I bought a dress for £120, reduced from £400; and l bought a beautiful Persian carpet for £600, reduced from £900.” It w ill never occur to her that she has actually wasted £720. She feels as though she had made £580. She also feels, I am sure, that if she had more time for shopping, she could make a living out of it.Some people buy in large quantities because it is cheaper. Once a couple bought enough sugar for their lifetime and the lifetime of their children and grandchildren. They thought it a bargain not to be missed. When the sugar arrived they didn't know where to store it - until they realized that their toilet was a very spacious one. So that was where they piled up their sugar. Not only did their guests feel rather strange whenever they were offered sugar to put into their coffee, but the toilet became extremely sticky. To offer bargains is a commercial trick to make the poor poorer. When greedy fools fall for this trick, it serves them right.28. Which word best describes the language style of the passage?A. Polite.B. Foolish.C. Humorous.D. Serious.29. What does the underlined word “novelty” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. Good quality.B. Low price.C. Curiosity.D. Newness.30. How does the author feel about 1p OFF a product?A. It’s a gift for poor people.B. It’s an offense to shoppers.C. It’s a bargain worth trying.D. It’s a real reduction in price.31. Which statement will the author probably agree with?A. Bargains are things people don’t really need.B. Bargains are often real cheap products.C. Bargains help people make a living.D. Bargains play tricks on people.DNever Talk to Strangers?“Never talk to strangers.” Many children are taught this simple rule as a precaution against abduction (诱拐). In June, 2005, an 11-year-old boy was lost in the Utah wilderness for four days. During that time, he stayed on the path. He saw people searching for him but deliberately hid from them, afraid someone might “steal” him. Eventually, the unfortunate game of hide-and-seek ended and he was found. According to the Canada Safety Council, this alarming incident shows how unwise it is to instill (灌输) a fear of strangers in children. The “stranger danger” message can prevent children from developing the social skills and judgment needed to deal effectively with real-life situations. In a difficult situation, a stranger could be their lifeline to safety. To have a child go missing is a parent’s worst nightmare. The threat of abduction by a stranger is minimal when compared with other possible reasons for a disappearance. In 2004, there were 67,266 missing-children cases in Canada. Only 31 involved abduction; in most of those cases the abductor was a relative, friend, or person known to the family. There were 671 cases of children wandering off, and 332 cases of abductions by a parent. Almost 80 percent of all cases were runaways. These statistics cast doubt on the idea that children should never talk to strangers. Wandering off is more common—but a lost child may have to call upon a stranger for help, and must develop the ability to judge what kind of people to approach. The “never talk to strangers” rule does not protect children in the situations they are most likely to face. On top of this, it can be confusing. Adults do not model the behavior; they often talk to strangers. A child may not know how to tell who is a stranger, and who is not.For young children, nothing replaces close supervision (监管). Pre-schoolers do not understand risk and tend to act without thinking. Children need to develop habits and attitudes that will protect them from the real threats and dangers they may face. The Canada Safety Council encourages parents to give their children age-appropriate positive messages about safety, bearing in mind how youngsters may understand their world.32. Today, everyone at the university knows her as the “Squirrel Girl”.Sophie tried bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel and take a picture. Thinking that her colleagues could do with something to lift their spirits, she started posting similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Sophie and her squirrels became an Internetsensation.Growing up in a neighborhood outside ofState College, Sophie was always fond of birds and animals around her home, but she didn't interact with people very much. She was later diagnosed (诊断) with Asperger's syndrome, but the squirrels changed that. “The squirrels help me break the ice, because I'll be sitting here patting a squirrel and other people will come over and well just start like feeding the squirrels together and chatting about them,” she said, “I am a lot more outgoing.”And in case you're wondering how Sophie is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut butter on the prop (道具), and they'll grab it. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. She had the patience to earn their trust, though. This year, Sophie is graduating with a degree in English and wildlife sciences. A behavior that shows respect in one place might be consideredoffensivesomewhere else. Take a look at unique gifting traditions from around the world. Here in theUS, a set of kitchen knives seems like the perfect gift idea for a wedding. However, in certain European countries likeGermany, people believe that a knife presented as a gift will cut off your friendship. There is a way to break it: Tie a coin to the knife or gift box. The receiver then returns the coin to you as a “payment”to remove the bad luck. There's a well-known Italian wedding tradition where the groom's (新郎) tie is cut into a number of tiny pieces. Wedding guests can then "buy” these tie pieces in exchange for cash. It's a fun way to give money to the new couple thatleaves guests with a wedding souvenir. As left hands are considered unclean in Indian culture, behaviors such as touching, passing money, or giving gifts are to be done with the right hand. Different from some other cultures , an odd number (奇数) of thingsor currency represents good luck. For example, £11 should be given rather than £10.InZimbabwe, it is common to directly ask for a gift. When you receive a gift without asking for it, even if thegiver's family is poor, it's the worst way to reject the offering. Also, expressing thanks with actions is better than giving thanks orally (口头地).These may include jumping up and down, dancing, or whistling.8. He never came back. The mother was very sad over her husband's disappearance, and it was nearly three months before she married again, and moved to San Antonio. The little girl recovered and in time grew up to womanhood. After a few years had rolled around, the little girl also married in time, and she also had a little girl of five years. After a little while Pansy seemed to grow worse, and John Smith again wanted to go for medicine, but his wife would not let him.Just then, the door suddenly opened and an old man with long white hair entered the room. “Hello, here is grandpa,” said Pansy. My wallet was gone. And I could only have left it one place: the G9 bus, from which I had gotten off minutes earlier and which was now speeding to some stops. The moment of realizing it was gone was followed by mental math. How much time and money would it cost to replace the credit cards, the driver's license, the expensive lipstick ($ 55!).Two hours after I was back at my house, I heard a knock on the door. My husband answered while I sat in the dining room on the phone with a credit card company. "Does Jennifer live here?" I heard someone say. In her hand was my wallet, without a penny missing. She left before I could offer my gratitude to her. After I posted the story, I heard from her boyfriend, who identified the good citizen as Erin Ball, a 26-year-old girl working for a trade organization.Once I figured out her, I called to thank her. She said she spotted my wallet and thought that it's more dangerous to go to a stranger's house than leaving the wallet with the driver, but she still decided to take the chance. "If I were in that situation, I would want someone to try to find me," she said. Ball doesn't find her actions particularly excellent. She added, "It's not hard to do small things for people."After Ball found my wallet, she decided to post a picture of my driver's license online before going to my house, trying to see if anyone knew me. No sooner had she left my doorstep than I got emails from two neighbors who recognized my face, both offering to help me find my missing property.Ball found my house on a bitterly cold night, for which I was extremely grateful. Looking back, I'm not surprised someone had wanted to help a stranger. A warm current of honesty and harmony is running through this town.4. Which of the following best describes Erin Ball?A. Humorous and kind.B. Generous and demanding.C. Honest and warm-hearted.D. Caring and outgoing.CThermoelectric generators turn waste heat into electricity without producing greenhouse gas emissions, like a free lunch. But the high cost of these devices has prevented their widespread use. Now, researchers have found a way to make cheap thermae-lectrices that work just as well. The work could pave the way for greener car engines, and other energy-generating devices.“This looks like a very smart way to realize high performance,” says Li-Dong Zhao, a materials scientist. He notes there are still a few more steps before these materials can become high-performing. However, he says, “This will be used in the not too far future.”Thermoelectrics are semiconductor devices placed on a hot surface. That gives them a hot side and a cool side. If a device allows the hot side to warm up the cool side, the electricity stops flowing. A device’s success at preventing this, as well as its ability to conduct electrons, feeds into a score known as the figure of merit, or ZT.Researchers have produced thermoelectric materials with increasing ZTs. The record came in 2014 when Mercouri Kanatzidis came up with a tin selenide with a ZT of 3.1. Yet the material was too fragile to work with. “For practical applications, it’s a non-star-ter,” Kanatzidis says.Getting through that door will still take some time. The tin selenide the team makes is mixed with Na, creating a “p-type” material that conducts positive charges. To make working devices, researchers also need an “n-type” version to conduct negative charges.Zhao’s team is now working on making an n-type version. Once successful, researchers should have a clear path to making a new generation of super-efficient thermoelectric genera-tors. Those could be installed everywhere from automobile exhaust pipes to water heaters and industrial smelters toscavengesome of the 65% of fossil fuel energy that winds up as waste heat.8. The first paragraph wants to tell us________.A. The wide use of thermoelectric generatorsB. The devices of current thermoelectric generatorsC. The reason why researchers make cheap thermoelectricsD. The greener car engines that contribute to environmental protection9. How does Li-Dong Zhao feel about cheap thermoelectric generators?A. Indifferent.B. Optimistic.C. Critical.D. Worried.10. What do you know about the research in 2014 from paragraph 4 and 5?A. It was far from a success for practical applications.B. A tin selenide with a ZT of 3.1 can be easy to work with.C. Researchers made an “n-type” version to make working devicesD. A “p-type” material made from the tin selenide conducts negative charges11. What does the underlined word “scavenge” in the last paragraph mean?A. Recycle.B. Produce.C. Clean.D. Increase.D“Heavy hearts, like heavy clouds in the sky, are best relieved by the letting of a little water, the French writer Antoine de Rivarol wrote. This love letter to the cleansing beauty of a good cry is a comforting thought at atime when the continuing stress of the COVID-19 has added heaviness to each of our lives.Scientifically, de Rivarol's poetic image doesn't, if you'll forgive the words used in the poem, hold water. There's limited research on crying, partly because of the difficulty of copying the behavior of real crying in a lab. But even within the previous studies, there's little evidence to suggest that crying provides a physiological cleansing of poisons in people's body.Psychologists believe the relief of a good cry connects with a different emotional process. “It seems that crying occurs just after the peak of the emotional experience, and crying is associated with this return to homeostasis: the process of maintaining a stable psychological state,” said Lauren Bylsma. He also said holding back tears can have negative physical consequences, including headaches and muscle tension. Such restriction can also limit our experiences of joy, gratitude and other positive emotions if we avoid acknowledging our feelings. For me crying has been easier said than done during the COVID-19. Psychologists say it's normal to feel stopped up by the stresses of the past year. We should find opportunities to release and process our emotions.Watching a tear-jerking movie, having an emotional conversation with a close friend, and writing in a journal are healthy ways toelicita cry. Physical activity like light-footed walking or even dancing can also signal our bodies to release some emotional tightness. We can then open up to the flow of feelings that leave us feeling lighter and refreshed—like a clear sky after a soaking rain.12. What is the weakness of the studies ever clone on crying?A. They were clone in a laboratory setting.B. They cared little about different forms of crying.C. They were always concentrated on people's daily life.D. They showed little about the positive physical effect of crying.13. What is the function of crying according to Lauren Bylsma?A. Curing people of their diseases.B. Keeping emotionally balanced.C. Producing negative mental results.D. Expanding people's experience of joy.14. What does the underlined word “elicit” in the last paragraph mean?A. Produce.B. Postpone.C. Control.D. Repeat.15. What are people advised to do according to the text?A. Learn to hold back their tears wisely.B. Share their emotion with their colleagues.C. Have a good cry when necessary.D. Try to avoid admitting our feelings.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Professions.B. Behaviors.C. Personality.D. Birthplace.12.Why did Ali change part of his chosen identity?______A. He lost interest in sport at school.B. He found a new sense of identity.C. While they were asking questions,he had no eyes for anyone but us.He was troubled when we were not sure of our answers;he grew calm when we gave a fine answer;he heard everything, and made us a thousand signs with his hand and head to say to us,"Good!-No!-Pay attention!-Slower!- Courage!"He would have suggested everything to us,if he had been able to talk. And when the other teachers said to me,"That is well;you may go," his eyes beamed with happiness.I returned at once to the schoolroom to wait for my father.Nearly all were still there.Atthat moment our teacher entered in a hurry, with a red face, and said,in a low, quick and joyful voice,"Good, all is going well now,let the rest come forwards! Boys, courage! I am extremely satisfied." And,in order to exhilarate us,as he went out,he made a motion of stumbled(绊倒)on purpose. It appeared so strange that all smiled.Seeing that act of childish joy,I had a mixed feeling of pain and tenderness. All his reward was that moment of cheerfulness,-it was the compensation for nine months of kindness, patience, and even sorrow! For that he had worked hard so long;for that he had so often gone to give lessons to a sick boy, poor teacher! That and nothing more was what he demanded of us,in exchange for so much love and so much care! And,now,it seems to me that I shall always see him in the performance of that act, when I recall him through many years;and when I have become a man,he will still be alive, and we shall meet, and I will tell him about that deed which touched my heart;and I will give him a kiss on his white head.任务一:选择下列单词在文章中的意义.but ______ A.something given as payment(报答)beam ______ B.having many problemsexhilarate ______ C.to excite someonecompensation ______ D.to smile E.except F.something making a bad situation better 任务二:根据文章内容回答问题.(1)When was the teacher worried during the exam?______(2)What do you think of the teacher?______(3)Give a title to the passage.______(4)Why did the author write the article?______六、书面表达(本大题共2小题,共40.0分)31. Dear Jack,How's everything going?I'm excited to tell you_________Best regards,Li Hua32. It's important to do exercise to keep fit【解析】答案:It's important to do exercise to keep fit. It's important to do exercise to keep fit. I don't mind speaking in front of many people【解析】答案:I don't mind speaking in front of many people. I don't mind speaking in front of many people. Paul is a hard-working player.【解析】答案:Paul is a hard-working player. Paul is a hard-working player. We should try our best to help others【解析】答案: We should try our best to help others ,考查汉译英,表示应该做某事用should do sth,"尽力做某事"用短语try one's best to do sth. Beijing National Stadium, also called the Bird's Nest,is located in China.---The stadium has recently been transformed (改造)so that it can be used for winter sports. 故选B.2.D. Maracana Stadium is an open-air stadium in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil. It was opened in 1950 for the FIFA World Cup. 故选D.3.C. Wembley Stadium is located in Wembley Park in London,England. The England national football team play most of their home matches there. The stadium is also used for other sporting events. Running is difficult because you have to make yourself willing to keep going. We can probably read this passage from______.A.a textbook B.a travel guideC.a science magazine D.a school website.BMy parents said I lost my hearing as a baby, but I knew I hadn’t lost anything. None of my parts had dropped off. Nothing had changed: I could hear music that was close enough to me. I could also hear my mom when she was in the same room. I could even hear my cat purr if I put my good ear on top of him.I wasn’t aware of any hearing loss until I began to wear a hearing aid when I started living alone.I noticed it ruined my peace of mind: pencils tapping, phones ringing, and refrigerators humming. Then, I began to discover many things I couldn’t do. I couldn’t tell where sounds came from, nor could I tell fire alarms from burglar alarms. I once missed a job interview because I misheard the address on the phone. For the first time, I had to admit that I had lost something.Unlike a wheelchair, my disability doesn’t announce itself. When I got jobs, I chose to keep it as a secret. One day a business friend said, ―Nicolette, sometimes in meetings you answer the wrong questions. People don’t know you can’t hear, so they think you’re strange, stupid—or just plain rude. It would be better to just tell them.‖ But I knew if I told, people might see on ly m y disability, and they might forget that I was also a writer, a painter, and a good gardener. I felt disabled and helpless. This bothered me till I met my husband. One morning at the shore I was listening to the sounds of the sea when my husband said, ―Hear the bird?‖ ―What bird?‖ I listened hard until I heard a tiny sound. If he hadn’t mentioned it I would never have noticed it. As I listened, slowly I began to hear—or perhaps imagine—a distant song. Did I really hear it? Or just heard in my heart what he shared with me? I realized that songs imagined were as sweet as songs heard and songs shared were sweeter still. This sharing is what both the disabled and non-disabled want. Every one of us, if we live long enough, will become disabled in some way. Let’s share. Now, just let me see your lips when you speak. And ask what you want to know. These are conversations we all should have, and it’s not that hard to begin.45. When the author wore the hearing aid, she ________.A. felt better prepared for the job interviewsB. was able to enjoy different soundsC. experienced a sense of lossD. was teased by others46. She didn’t tell her disability to others because ________.A. people might focus on her hearing lossB. she could get the work done as abledC. people might be curious about itD. she wanted to do more jobs47. Why did Nicolette write the passage?A. To draw people’s attention to the hearing problemB. To tell people not to treat the disabled differently.C. To remember the challenges she faced.D. To show how much she missed before.CPhone Soap: Charge and Clean Your PhoneYou may charge your phone every day, but do you clean your phone as much? Whatever your hands touch, your phones touch. It has been discovered that some phones have 18 times more bacteria and viruses than any surface in a public restroom. So it probably won’t surprise you that a 2011 University of London study found that one in six of our phones have bacteria and viruses on them—specifically, the bacteria called E. coli. The research on bacteria and viruses led to the invention of Phone Soap. It is not actually liquid like dishwasher soap. It is a phone charger that uses the electromagnetic radiation (辐射) used in hospitals to kill 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses, cleaning your phone while it charges.“There are really certain types of bacteria and viruses that we should not be in touch with, and they are really on our phones,” says Wes Barnes, the Phone Soap co-founder. It all started while his cousin and co-founder, Dan L aPorte, was in his cancer research lab at college. “He realized he got the idea of getting rid of bacteria and viruses on the phones,” said Barnes. “In the lab they used UV-C light for destroying them. He realized this would be the fastest, most powerful way to kill any bacteria and viruses living on electronic machines.”Phone Soap looks like a little metal suitcase. Your phone rests in to charge and get cleaned at the same time. Instead of plugging your phone into the wall, you’d plug it into the Phone So ap charger box. The process only takes a few minutes but, Barnes says, “The idea is that you can leave it in there overnight if you want to keep charging. Reflective paint keeps the light completely around the phone so it cleans the phone fully.”The co-founders spent 2013 finding the right companies and they started shipping the product in late November. By last week’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Phone Soap was all grown-up. Both co-founders have left their previous jobs and are s elling Phone Soap nonstop. “We’re shipping almost more than we can handle each day,” Barnes says. “It’s been a great adventure.”48. We can learn from the first paragraph that ______.A. phones can be very dirtyB. phones are where bacteria are bornC. most phones are attacked by bacteriaD. phones store more bacteria in a restroom49. According to the passage, Phone Soap ______.A. takes a whole night to kill bacteriaB. deals with bacteria with radiationC. is a kind of liquid like dishwasher soapD. has to be plugged into the wall to work50. From what Barnes said in the last paragraph, we can infer that ______.A. Phone Soap is in great demand nowB. Phone Soap is really hard to handleC. they can’t produce enough Phone SoapD. they’ll make improvements to Phone Soap51. What’s the passage mainly about?A. Methods of cleaning phones.B. Tips on charging phones quickly.C. Soap killing harmful bacteria on phones.D. A phone charger keeping your phone clean.DSuppose you become a leader in an organization. It's very likely that you’ll want to have volunteers to help with the organization's activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.Let's begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people’s wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g., “I volunteer because it's important to me”) to an external factor (e.g., “I volunteer because I'm required to do so”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”.Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am.” Consistent with the researchers’ expectations, they found a p ositive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice: “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity.... Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity”.52. People volunteer mainly out of ______.A. academic requirementsB. social expectationsC. financial rewardsD. internal needs53. What can we learn from the Florida study?A.
