新编大学英语2 unit 2 communication problems
1. When Martians and Venusians first got together, they encountered many of the problems with relationships we have today.
Paraphrase: When Martians and Venusians have a meeting for the first time, they met many of the problems with relationships that still exists today.
Ⅰ. Background Information
1. Useful Information
It is well-known that learning a second language is never easy, and, generally speaking, the older one is when one attempts a new language, the more difficult it becomes. This is at least partly due to what is known as language interference, meaning that the linguistic patterns of our first language interfere with those of the second because no two languages have exactly the same sounds and grammatical structures. The English language has a very large vocabulary because it has incorporated words from many other languages over the centuries. This is nowhere more apparent than in its color words. For example, there are many words that express the color “purple”, describing its different shades and hues: mauve, violet, lilac, or lavender. An interesting linguistic gender difference among native speakers of English is the likelihood of women using these color terms to differentiate between shades of purple, whereas, men will be satisfied with the one word “purple”. This is true of other color words too.

I usually avoid going to the hospital because to see a doctor is really tiring and time-consuming. So when I don’t feel well and it’s not a very serious case, what I usually do is to have a good rest. For example, when I have a cold, I will drink a lot of water and stay in bed. If it’s a serious health problem and I can’t recover by taking a good rest, I’ll go to the doctor and get some medicine. Just like most people, I hope the doctor will comfort me besides prescribing me the medicine.

Part Two: In-Class Reading >> Detailed Reading
“ Tortoise saw all these preparations and soon discovered what it all meant. Nothing that happened in the world of the animals ever escaped his notice; he was full of cunning. 2 As soon as he heard of the great feast in the sky his throat began to itch at the very thought. There was a famine in those days and Tortoise had not eaten a good meal for two moons. His body rattled like a dry stick in his empty shell. Slowly but surely he began to plan how he would go to the sky."
Part Two: In-Class Reading >> Detailed Reading
"After a selection of nuts had been presented and eaten, the people of the sky set before their guests the most delectable dishes Tortoise had ever seen or dreamed of. 5 The soup was brought out hot from the fire and in the very pot in which it had been cooked. It was full of meat and fish. Tortoise began to sniff aloud. There was pounded yam and also yam soup cooked with palm oil and fresh fish. There were also pots of palm wine. When everything had been set before the guests, one of the people of the sky came forward and tasted a little from each pot. He then invited the birds to eat. But Tortoise jumped to his feet and asked: 'For whom have you prepared this feast?'

Yes, it’s quite necessary, because such notes bring warmth and reassurance to those who need encouragement in a world too often cold and full of competition. Besides, we all need a boost from time to time, and a few lines of praise can even change life.
Part Two: In-Class Reading >> Pre-Reading
Sample 2
There is no doubt that people need encouragement and praise. All of us would like to feel needed and admired. If we didn’t hear any words of encouragement or praise, how could we know that we were valued by people close to us? Besides, when I fail to do something successfully, I’ll feel depressed. If someone can comfort or console me at this moment, and give me encouragement, they’ll probably make a big difference in my life. On the other hand, if I can encourage or cheer my friend. I’ll feel good about myself. So encouragement actually benefits people on both sides.

Yes, I agree. Male speakers tend to be more direct while female speakers are inclined to be more indirect or tactful. For instance, if a man says “You don’t look good in that dress” he means what he says. In contrast, a woman might say “That’s a nice dress you’re wearing” when she actually doesn’t like the dress. Usually, when people say something, they try to make themselves understood by expressing the literal meaning. But on

新编大学英语第一册unit2 Text B The Psychology of Money

新编大学英语第一册unit2 Text B The Psychology of Money

The Psychology of MoneyAre you a compulsive spender, or do you hold on to your mon ey as long as possible? Are you a bargain hunter? Would you rath er use charge accounts than pay cash? Your answers to these questi ons will reflect your personality. According to psychologists, our in dividual money habits not only show our beliefs and values, but can also stem from past problems.Experts in psychology believe that for many people, money is a n important symbol of strength and influence. Husbands who compl ain about their wives' spending habits may be afraid that they are l osing power in their marriage. Wives, on the other hand, may wast e huge amounts of money because they are angry at their husbands. In addition, many people consider money a symbol of love. They spend it on their family and friends to express love, or they buy th emselves expensive presents because they need love.People can be addicted to different things—for example, alcohol, drugs, certain foods, or even television. People who have such an addiction are compulsive; that is, they have a very powerful psycho logical need that they feel they must satisfy. According to psycholo gists, many people are compulsive spenders; they feel that they mu st spend money. This compulsion, like most others, is irrational—impossible to explain reasonably. For compulsive spenders who buy on credit, charge accounts are even more exciting than money. In o ther words, compulsive spenders feel that with credit, they can do anything. Their pleasure in spending enormous amounts is actually greater than the pleasure that they get from the things they buy. There is even a special psychology of bargain hunting. To save money, of course, most people look for sales, low prices, and discounts. Compulsive bargain hunters, however, often buy things that they don't need just because they are cheap. They want to believe that they are helping th eir budgets, but they are really playing an exciting game: when the y can buy something for less than other people, they feel that they are winning. Most people, experts claim, have two reasons for thei r behavior: a good reason for the things that they do and the real reason. It is not only scientists, of course, who understand the psycholo gy of spending habits, but also business people. Stores, companies, and advertisers use psychology to increase business: they consider p eople's needs for love, power, or influence, their basic values, their beliefs and opinions, and so on in their advertising and sales methods.Psychologists often use a method called "behavior therapy"[2] to help individuals solve their personality problems. In the same way, they can help people who feel that they have problems with mone y: they give them "assignments". If a person buys something in ev ery store that he enters, for instance, a therapist might teach him s elf-discipline in this way: on the first day of his therapy, he must go into a store, stay five minutes, and then leave. On the second d ay, he should stay for ten minutes and try something on. On the th ird day, he stays for fifteen minutes, asks the salesclerk a question, but does not buy anything. Soon he will learn that nothing bad w ill happen to him if he doesn't buy anything, and he can solve the problem of his compulsive buying.。
