The Chinese railway system has been hit by another travel rush as the holiday comes to an end. It is estimated that the number of railway passengers will reach more than eight million a day. 715 temporary train trips have been added to cope with the influx.

Meanwhile, highways in most parts of the country have been affected by heavy smog and rainfall. China’s central weather bureau has reported that over the next 3 days, varying degrees of snow, including snow storms, are expected to hit central and eastern parts of China.

On Saturday morning, sections of highway in Henan, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hunan, and Jiangsu provinces were closed because of the smog. Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei issued yellow alerts for the smog.

Western parts of China will see a small amount of snow, with some snowstorms expected in the eastern part of the

Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Heavy rain is forecast to hit southern parts of China.

Heavy air pollution to last a week /program/china24/20140222/100428.shtml The National Meteorological Administration and the Ministry of Environmental Protection have issued a joint weather forecast on the continuous air pollution.

With no cold front to disperse it, dense smog is expected to hang over Beijing and Tianjin municipalities and Hebei and Shandong Provinces for a week.

Local residents have been advised to take protective measures, and encouraged to choose public transport over their cars.

Children and the elderly have been asked to stay indoors. Kindergartens, primary and middle schools could suspend classes.
