My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby.Very early in the morning,Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast."The day starts at dawn on my farm,"he said. After breakfast,I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens.while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草).I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.In the afternoon,I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes,as long as my dad went with me.I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So,my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don’t be late for supper,"Uncle Paul cried,"and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!" "OK!"my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的)blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

主题语境(二) 对社会有突出贡献的人物阅读理解A(2018·某某卷·A)In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century —most experts date the first novel to RobinsonCrusoe in 1719 —but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steampowered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy (识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral or just plain bad.In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters —from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim —were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens' greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the MonaLisa. How did Dickens get to the top? For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to 1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half dozen of them. It's partly true that Dickens' style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It's partly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it's also that herewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a distinguished writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible —and important for our own culture —to understand how he made himself a lasting one.【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。

Simply put, if we don't reduce the number of cars in our cities then they will just completely clog up and stop moving. The study notes the number of cars is actually increasing faster than that of people. In 2019, 80 million cars were built while the population increased by 78 million. And the mass production of those cars was responsible for 4% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (排放) ,which is bigger than aviation (航空) and that's before you even fuel them up.The study authors construct a mathematical model, and residents choose driving their car or taking public transport on the basis of the time it takes to do the t rip. “All individuals decide their commuting (通勤) mode trying to reduce their costs, but the result is the overall worst-case situation, where the average commuting time is longer and all people decide to use their car.” write the authors of the study.Besides, policymakers tend to construct even more car infrastructure (基础设施) and invest even more in private cars, which then encourages more private vehicle use and results in even more traffic jams.Possible solutions have to be actively encouraged, with more travel options, plus local shops and services. Also, increasing the costs could be achieved by reducing the space devoted to cars, with more public transport lanes, wider sidewalks, and pedestrian roads, for example.Dr. Humberto, one author of the s tudy said: “If our goal is to have more liveable and developed cities then we must take part of this land and give it to other modes of transportation: walking, cycling and public transport.10.Which of the following can replace the underlined words “clog up”?A.Turn down. B.Break down.C.Make troubles. D.Get stuck.11.What can we infer from the numbers in Paragraph 2?A.The number of cars is larger than population.B.Car production creates more CO2 than aviation.C.CO2 emission is largely affected by car production.D.Global CO2 emission is more serious than expected.12.What result do study authors get from their model?A.It is hard for people to keep a balance.B.It takes more time to drive cars to work.C.More cars can be used to save time.D.Driving cars can keep the cost down.13.What can be a possible way to reduce car use?A.Building parking lots. B.Saving land for cars.C.Producing less cars. D.Riding a bus to work.C(2021·福建三明一中高二开学考试)E-scooter(电动滑板车)sharing, which once looked like it would completely change traffic in large cities around the world, is turning out to create just about as many problems as it solves. When e-scooters began to appear on the city streets, it was thought that people would take e-scooters instead of driving, which could cut down on traffic jams, pollution, and parking problems. And for some people, there is usually no direct public transport from the bus and subway stops to their homes. So, e-scooters were also seen as a solution for the "last-mile" problem at first, helping connect riders' homes with bus and subway stops. Then some companies started to make e-scooters and rent them out. They put lots ofe-scooters in popular locations around busy cities. And customers can use their smartphones to find and rent e-scooters. It usually costs about $1 to unlock an e-scooter and then about 15 to 25 cents for every 15 minutes after that. When customers finish riding, they simply can park e-scooters in any place that's convenient. However, soon e-scooters were being left almost everywhere. They were blocking sidewalks and sometimes roads. E-scooters weren't just in the way, and they were also dangerous. e-scooters can go as fast as 16 miles per hour. They're too fast for sidewalks and can put walkers in danger. But they're usually too slow for city streets, where they block the faster traffic of cars and buses. And people began to get injured. Scientists studied nearly 200 people who got injured in a three-month period in Austin, Texas. About 15% had serious brain injuries. Riders aren't just getting injured, there have also been several e-scooter-related deaths. Most cities with e-scooters have now made rules about where and how e-scooters can be used. Other cities have gotten rid of them completely. Anyway, e-scooters have become a very popular way to get around in many big cities, but it will take time and effort to makee-scooters fit in with big city traffic safely.14.Why were the shared e-scooters put on the market?A.To encourage a healthy lifestyle.B.To reduce the cost of transportation.C.To help solve the city traffic problems.D.To raise public awareness of saving energy.15.Which of the following is the advantage of shared e-scooters according to Paragraph 3? A.They can move as fast as buses.B.They are easy to access in cities.C.They can carry users' smartphones.D.They can be ridden by people of all ages.16.What do we know about shared e-scooters from Paragraph 4?A.They are hardly found on the main streets.B.They are disliked by many American people.C.They become the main reason for traffic deaths.D.They increase traffic pressure and safety concerns.17.What is the author's attitude towards e-scooter sharing?A.Positive. B.Doubtful.C.Objective. D.Disapproving.三、语法填空(2021·云南省南涧县第一中学)阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday. Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a do g at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of hear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh. At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

Take a leech bite, for example. It draws blood but doesn't usually cause further problems. Some parasites might even be beneficial.Recent studies by Chelsea Wood,a marine biologist, and other scientists have shown that parasites are more complex and important than they might at first seem to be.Consider Euhaplorchis californiensis. This tiny flatworm infects the brain of the Califoria killifish. 3________ The parasite forms cysts (in the fish's brain. An infected fish may host thousands of these cysts. But here's the catch:The parasite's ultimate home is a bird's gut.Killifish often seem shy, hiding beneath rocks on the sea floor. 4________"They flash their shiny sides and make a huge spectacle of themselves, Wood says..“They look ridiculous.”As a result, birds are more likely to see them, dive in and eatthem up.From the fish's point of view, the infection is dangerous. But Wood looks at a larger picture. By changing the fish's behavior, the parasite makes more food available to birds."It is actually pushing biomass(生物量)up the food web, into the mouths of birds,"Wood says.5________A.Many of them are harmful after all.B.And this type of thing is not unusual.C.It is a small species that lives near the coast.D.In other words,it's playing an important role.E.Parasites make up four in every ten species on the planet.F.Altogether parasites represent a diverse collection of living things.G.But when they have a parasitic brain infection, they sometimes head to the surface.二Researchers in Singapore have developed a robot to catch elderly people as they start to fall. The so-called Mobile Robotic Balance Assistant (MRBA)is also called "Mister Bah".It's described as a wearable assistive robot.1________ And it was developed by researchers at the Nanyang Technological University,Singapore (NTU Singapore)and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.MRBA uses its inbuilt sensors to detect a loss of balance and catches the user with its attached safety harness (which is worn around the user's hips (髋)2 ________ It can also help users who have difficulty in walking and balancing to stand up safely from a seated position, and to sit down safely from a standing position.3 ________ It's said that falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in the US for people who are older than 65.NTU Singapore says that statistics from the World Health Organization indicate that falls are the second leading cause of deaths from accidental or unintentional injuries worldwide."The clinical trials involved 29 participants, including patients who suffered from serious diseases, such as strokes, brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries. The researchers found that MRBA was successful in aiding them with sitting, standing, and walking,as well as assisting in tasks like fetching water,"NTU Singapore says."No falls were recorded in the trials, which lasted three days per participant."4 ________The researchers behind MRBA have developed three models of the robot.5 ________They're now looking for 71 more participants to further build use cases of the robot in home and community settings.A.MRBA has various functions.B.Such a robot can be of great importance.C.It's very easy for old people to get injured.D.But the robot's function is not limited to that.E.It can detect and prevent a fall before it happens.F.And the researchers concluded that the robot was really reliable.G.They've also filed four patents related to the robot's primary technology.三In the past,to make regular use of rainwater, people usually positioned a container to collect rainwater as it ran off the roof toward the ground. 1________And they try to put the rainwater to good use. Why do many people collect rainwater? There are three common reasons. Many people nowadays wish to be more responsible for the planet's resources and lead a greener life.Besides, nowadays dry seasons are more common and many places quite lack water. 2________A basic system to catch the rainwater involves nothing more than having a gutter(雨水槽)system around the edges of your roof. The rainwater is first caught in the gutter. 3________ By positioning a container underneath the open end of the pipe, you can collect rainwater whenit rains.4________ For example, you can use the collected rainwater in your gardening efforts. The handful of guests watched in awe —and a little trepidation惊恐— as the majestic animal, who appeared to be searching for a tasty morsel, calmly explored the various areas of the restaurant. Fortunately for the humans, nothing on the “menu” seemed to catch the leopard’s fancy, and it left as abruptly as it had arrived.Erika Wiese, who captured the footage of the leopard walking through the restaurant, told Kruger Sightings that she and the other guests were alerted to the predator’s arrival by the alarm calls sounded by surrounding vervet monkeys. Also known as savanna monkeys, the smart mammals communicate the presence of each of their four-known predators — leopards, eagles, baboons, and pythons — with a unique call, allowing other members of their species to respond accordingly. For example, the short tonal call signaling a leopard is nearby cause the monkeys to scramble into trees, while the low-pitched grunts, indicating the presence of eagles, warns them to keep an eye on the skies. The leopard, however, was not interested in the monkeys, but instead appeared to be in search of a bushbuck, or African antelope, that it had been stalking in a nearby riverbed earlier in the day. Wiese says, “The sighting ended with the leopard strolling calmly away from the deck area and out of sight towards the bushbuck who you can hear alarm calling at the end.”Wiese says that thanks to the lodge’s well-trained staff, who are experienced at dealing with wild animal visits, and the strict safety rules in place, the guests all remained calm. She gushes, “We felt complete awe, reverence, respect, and gratitude. What a rare experience to have such an encounter with a leopard. Tom looked out into the coal-black night, struggling desperately to keep his car on the road. The rain beatdown continuously and the road was deserted except for Tom and his car.Tom could see his wheelchair in the backseat from the rear-view mirror and quickly looked down at his thin, broken legs. After a few seconds, he looked up and peered out of the window. In the distance, he could see a light twinkling in the blackness. When Tom approached the house, a young girl around ten years old was standing in the doorway.

A seed expert who brought high-quality vegetable seeds to many countries, was awarded the 2019 World Food Prize. Simon Groot of the Netherlands is credited with introducing high-quality, disease-resistant vegetable seeds to more than 60 countries including the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.Developing seeds has been the Groot family business for a long time. He is the sixth generation of, what is called, a seedsman. He began his search to create better vegetable seeds to help farmers in Southeast Asia in 1981. He was 47 then and his family’s company had just been taken over by a larger corporation.Sixteen years earlier, he had made his first trip to Indonesia. There, Groot learned that vegetable seeds which were developed for the moderate climate of Europe, did poorly when planted in the hot tropics. He thought there was a great possibility to introduce hybrid(杂交植物的)vegetables to the area. The area lacked vegetable seed developers who were trying to create hybrids for the local climate.“It was neither charity nor business. It was a passion for good seeds,” said Groot. Now 85, he said developing seeds has always concerned him, “I noticed the seed quality in that part of world was so much below our standards and below achievable standards.” He added that he “could not sta nd” that the farmers there did not have better seeds. At the time, farmers in Southeast Asia usually saved seeds from season to season. That was because the seeds available for sale were often old. Those seeds were usually from Europe or North America and did not grow well in their tropical climate. This meant that the farmers endedup with smaller crops, and lower quality that changed greatly from season to season. The plants also could easily become infected with diseases.Groot partnered with seed trader Benito Domingo of the Philippines. They put together a team of seed researchers and growers from Wageningen University in the Netherlands and the University of the Philippines. Within a few years, they developed a hybrid bitter gourd that sold successfully. Then they adapted a tomato plant, followed by eggplants, pumpkins and leafy vegetables. The early successes led to the start of the East-West Seed Company, which now has more than 970 improved seeds of 60 vegetable crops. Over the past 40 years, the discoveries have led to the creation of a tropical vegetable seed industry aimed at small farmers. The tropical seeds are now spreading into Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is estimated that the company’s seeds are used by 20 million farmers each year in m ore than 60 countries, said Kenneth Quinn, the former U.S. ambassador to Vietnam. He has been the president of the Des Moines, Iowa-based World Food Prize Foundation since 2000.Of Groot, Quinn said, “he’s a truly remarkable individual with worthy accompli shments that should be recognized.”The award was announced during a ceremony at the U.S. Department of State hosted by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “The remarkable improvements made in these tropical vegetable seeds helped small farmers in developing nations produce more food and importantly get more income for themselves and their families,” Pompeo said. He added that the seeds fight hunger and help increase economic growth.1. What can we know about Groot from the text?A. He got the World Food Prize for improving vegetable seeds.B.
