AI was driving down a quiet country road and heading home. As I was rounding a bend, I saw a rock in the middle of the road. As I slowed to go around it, I noticed that it had a head and was staring up (抬头注视) at me. It was a turtle who had decided to warm up by sunbathing on the road.I pulled over to the side of the road and picked up the sunbather. I knew if I moved the turtle off to the side of the road he would just crawl (爬行) back to the warmer spot as soon as I left. Not knowing what else to do then I carried him to my car and placed him on the passenger seat. When I finally made it home, I picked up the sunbather again and headed to the woods behind my house. After looking around a bit I saw a clear spot where the sun was shining down on a single rock. I gently placed the turtle down on it and took a few steps back. A few minutes later the head slowly came out and started enjoying the sun once more. I smiled and headed back to my house. My simple act of kindness may not have seemed like much in the eyes of the world, but it made a difference in the life of one turtle and in the heart of one man. Most of us go through our lives wanting to make some big difference in this world. However, any kind act makes a difference. Remember this the next time you see a person or a turtle needing a helping hand.语篇解读一只乌龟在公路上晒太阳,作者担忧它的平安,把它带回到家放到屋后的小树林,让它在那里平安地享受阳光的沐浴。

The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD, Insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is on my face. Its not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmothers chocolate cake. We faced constant comparisons in our physical appearance. People were always comparing our personalities and academic performances as well! These constant comparisons made me decide not to go to the same university as my twin brother. That is not to say we didn’t have good academic experiences in the past or didn’t get along. In eleventh grade, we were placed in the same math experimental class. I recall arriving early to the first class and being a bit disappointed when I saw David already seated at his desk. It is hard to avoid comparisons when we were in the same class. However, we found that we actually worked well together, in our own way. We would argue about the best way to solve a problem and debate its answer. As the year went on, I noticed that our teacher kept moving us closer and closer together. Our argument was actually productive. However, we were two very different candidates. I was very involved in extracurricular(课外的) activities, while David had better test scores than I did. I’m fond of writing while David enjoys playing computer games. I am currently studying English and French at McGill University, while David is studying computer science at Union College.Besides escaping comparisons, there have been other benefits to going to different universities. The first one is that we are forced to talk to each other, as we no longer see each other every day. This is healthier for our relationship. The second, also the more important one, is that after having so many similar experiences together we can have our own experiences separate from one another.Going to a different university has benefited me thus far. It allows for more personal growth, and I’m not attached to the label of being a twin.24.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Why Do People Like to Compare Me with My Twin Brother?B.Why Am I Choosing a Different University with My Twin Brother?C.What Are Some Main Benefits of Being Twin Brothers at School?D.How Can Twin Brothers Get Along Well with Each Other at School?25.What can be inferred about the author?A.He was fed up with people’s comparisons.B.He was glad to hear people’s comparisons.C.He is more handsome than David.D.He was better at academic subjects than David.26.What does the author think of him and David studying in the same math experimental class? A.Boring. B.Harmful.C.Awful. D.Beneficial.27.The author chose to go to a different university in order to .A.avoid seeing DavidB.escape arguing with DavidC.pursue a different experienceD.strengthen bonds with DavidCFor some parents, hitting a child who misbehaves is a common punishment. In fact, they may think that a physical type of punishment is good for children and will teach them to behave in the future. However, a leading group of child health specialists suggest that the opposite is true. These experts say that hitting is not only ineffective, but may even cause longterm harm to the child. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently changed its policy on physical punishment for a child. Released in October, the academy warns that hitting a child may have longterm effects. These effects include “aggression, brain changes, substance abuse and suicidal behavior in adulthood”. The report admits that not every child who is spanked will have these problems later in life. It makes this observation: “Although many children who were spanked become happy, healthy adults, current evidence suggests that hitting is not necessary and may result in longterm harm.”In recent years, many American experts have been advising parents against the use of physical punishment. Many other countries have already banned corporeal(肉体的) punishment. Sweden was the first nation to do so in 1966. Earlier studies have shown that corporeal punishment can alsoaffect a child’s ability to think and learn. In 2012, a Canadian study found that hitting children can cause longterm developmental damage and may even lower a child’s intelligence test scores. The American Academy of Pediatrics also warns against using strong verbal abuse or shame to discipline a child. These types of punishment can also cause longterm problems for a child. Instead, they suggest other types of punishment that are appropriate for the age of the child. For younger children, punishment could be taking away a favorite toy. For older children, a parent can limit the time the child spends watching television or playing with computers or electronic games.28.What can we know according to the experts?A.Spanking a child is not effective but harmful.B.Sweden was the first country to spank a child in 1996.C.The study from Canada found that spanking children can lower children’s grades.D.Many American experts found spanking a child can cause antisocial behavior.29.Which of the following best explains “discipline” underlined in Paragraph 3? A.Protect. B.Control.C.Persuade. D.Punish.30.What does the author intend to say in the last paragraph?A.We should take away younger children’s favorite toys as punishment.B.As for older children,we need to allow them to watch TV or play games.C.Different children should be given different ways to punish.D.It may be ineffective for younger or older children to have punishment.31.What is the text mainly about?A.A physical type of punishment.B.The results of punishment.C.Different countries have different types of punishment.D.How to punish the mischievous children.答案ADCAD“Small enough to fit in your hands but too dangerous to hold” is a good description of the hedgehog.Though small,it is able to protect itself from attack or harm.Thousands of stiff, sharp spines cover the animal’s back and sides.Even though spines provide the hedgehog with effective protection, the animal’s most striking characteristic is its practice of curling up into a tight ball, with its spines sticking out in all directions. The hedgehog curls up if disturbed or frightened—only the strongest animals can open it.It also sleeps in this position,so it is rarely caught unprotected.Hedgehogs can live in a wide range of climates and lands in East Africa. They must have dry shelters on welldrained soil and a good supply of insects.Nairobi, the capital of Kenya in East Africa, meets these habitat conditions, where hedgehogs are reported to be abundant.A hedgehog uses a small home range with an approximate 120yard radius(半径范围) from its nest. The hedgehog makes loud noises if its range is invaded by another animal. The hedgehog wakes up at dusk and begins its activities alone. It uses regular pathways, walking along on its short legs searching for food.A hedgehog will eat about onethird of its body weight in one night. Its favorite foods are insects, earthworms and snails, making it a welcome guest in many gardens—it is even kept as a pet.It is also known to eat eggs, small mammals, birds, frogs, reptiles, and roots.Although not completely immune to poison, hedgehogs have enough resistance to allow them to eat poisonous snakes.32.While facing danger, the hedgehog .A.stands straight upB.makes loud noisesC.goes back to its nestD.uses its spines for protection33.The second paragraph is mainly about hedgehogs’.A.appearance B.habitatC.diet D.hunting skills34.According to Paragraph 3,the hedgehog is .A.active at nightB.afraid of snakesC.keeping away from gardensD.totally immune to poisons35.It can be inferred from the text that .A.there is a lot of rain in NairobiB.hedgehogs are cooperative animalsC.hedgehogs always stay on guard against dangerD.there is an increasing trend towards keeping pet hedgehogs答案DBAC第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century. In thecourse of his work, he cooperated with famous men of science like Isaac Newton, and the great architect Christopher Wren.Hooke's early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered Westminster School and from there he went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skills at designing experiments and inventing instruments. In 1662, he was named Curator of Experiments at the newly formed Royal Society of London — meaning that he was responsible for demonstrating (展示) new experiments at the society's weekly meetings. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that the society had no money to pay him!Watching living things through a microscope was one of his favourite pastimes. He invented a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork (软木塞) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. There were cells —the smallest units of life. In fact, it was Hooke who invented the term “cell” as the box-like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of some place.Another achievement of Hooke's was his book Micrographia, which introduced the enormous potential of the microscope. It contains fascinating drawings of the things he saw under the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas on gravity, light and combustion (燃烧) that may have helped scientists like Newton when they were developing their own theories on these phenomena.Hooke made a valuable contribution to astronomy, too. A crater (坑) on the moon is named after him in honour of his services to this branch of science.1.Why did Hooke accept the job as Curator of Experiments?A.He was good at designing experiments.B.His family needed his support.C.He wanted to please the famous scientists in England.D.His parents couldn't afford his education.2.What does the underlined word “pastimes” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Jobs. B.Experiments.C.Hobbies. D.Structures.3.What can we learn from the text?A.Hooke went to Oxford in 1662.B.Hooke was well paid in the Royal Society of London.C.Hooke made a contribution to medicine.D.Hooke's book Micrographia might have helped Newton.4.What is the last paragraph to prove?A.Hooke was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century.B.Hooke was good at making discoveries.C.Hooke's contributions were not limited to one field.D.Hooke was one of the greatest astronomers.BParents often put their own relationship on the back burner to concentrate on their children, but a new study shows that when spouses (配偶) love each other, their children stay in school longer and marry later in life.Research about how the affection between parents shapes their children's long-term life outcomes is rare because the data demands are high. This study uses unique data from families in Nepal to provide new evidence. The study, co-authored by researchers at the University of Michigan and McGill University in Quebec, was published in the journal Demography.“In this study, we see that parents' emotional connection to each ot her affects child growth so much that it shapes their children's future,” said coauthor and UM Institute for Social Research researcher William Axinn. “The fact that we found these kinds of things in Nepal moves us to step closer to evidence that these things are universal.”The study uses data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study in Nepal. The survey was launched in 1995, and collected information from 151 neighborhoods in the Western Chitwan Valley. Married couples were interviewed at the same time but separately, and were asked to assess the level of affection they had for their partner. The spouses answered “How much do you love your husband/wife, very much, some, a little, or not at all?”The researchers then followed the children of these parents for 12 years to document their education and marital (婚姻的) behavior. They found that the children of the parents who reported they loved each other either “some” or “very much” stayed in school longer and married later.“Family isn't just another institution. It's not like a school. It is this place where we also have emotions and feelings,” said lead author Sarah Brauner-Otto, director of the Centre on Population Dynamics at McGill University. The researchers say that their next important question will be to identify why parental love impacts children in this way.5.Why is the research rarely done about the influence of parents' love on children's lives?A.Because few scientists show passion.B.Because the data are demanding.C.Because evidence is hard to collect.D.Because parents sometimes don't tell the truth.6.What does the underlined word “universal” in the th ird Paragraph mean?A.Reasonable. B.Scientific.C.Worldwide. AAre you looking for a young adult novel? If you,re, here are some good choices for you.The Harry Potter SeriesIf you’re a grown-up and still haven’t read the Harry Potter novels, you don’t know what you’re missing. J.K. Rowling’s tale of the English boy wizard shouldn’t be missed. As he grows into a confident teen, Harry struggles with the same issues all peers (同龄人) face: the pressure to fit in, anxiety and stress over grades and homework. His Dark MaterialsAdults will find this award-winning trilogy (三部曲) fascinating as they follow the adventures of Lyra and Will, two children who travel through the universe that is quite different from our own. Even though it9s targeted at children, the series’ complex themes related to morality, identity, and fate will attract readers of every age.Roll of Thunder, Hear My CryAs the second in a series of four books about the Logan family, this novel follows the leading role, Cassie Logan, a 9-year-old girl and her family. They struggle to keep their land while fighting against varying degrees of racism from the white townspeople. Cassie is both brave and innocent; hence, adults can benefit from Cassie’s perspective on what it’s like to be a child living in a racially oppressed environment. The Hunger Games TrilogyIf you have a young reader in your house, chances are that you’ve heard of The Hunger Games. This trilogy by Suzanne Collins is set in thepost-apocalyptic (后末世)country of Panem, where children are selected annually to participate in a televised, fight-to-the-death battle called The Hunger Games. The rebellion (反抗)inspired by the sharp and spirited hero, Katniss Everdeen, will attract readers of all ages.1.What does the author think of The Harry Potter Series?A.Adults will find it a bit too childish.B.It’s not easy for teenagers to relate to it.C.It can make young readers less confident.D.It deals with some common issues of teenagers.2.From the passage, we know His Dark Materials _________.A.is not a science fiction seriesB.is too difficult for childrenC.has very deep themesD.tells mainly about the magic world3.To learn about race relations, which book will you read?A.His Dark Materials.B.The Harry Potter Series.C.The Hunger Games Trilogy.D.Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.4.What do we learn about the books?A.They’re all suitable for adults.B.They are all mainly to teach a lesson.C.They all deal with issues most peers face.D.They were all mainly written for adults.BChris Home has written an article about his experience of the 11 plus system. He failed the exam, but then went on to prove that his actual academic abilities were very strong and not honestly reflected by the cruel 11 plus system. Pass the 11 plus and you are likely to go to a Grammar School; fail and you go to a Secondary School. He argues that most people who have failed the 11 plus found it very hard to appeal against the failure since they would be ignored by the Grammar Schools who had plenty of pupils who had passed to choose from. If you did not perform well on the day, that was it!There is a claim that Grammar Schools increase social mobility (社会阶层的变动)— I would guess that it is an argument most often put forward by those who went to Grammar Schools. Social mobility means that even if you are born poor, you can still get into Grammar Schools like wealthy children. However, it is not so.The Sutton Trust published 2013 research that shows less than 3% of pupils at Grammar Schools are on free school meals — free school meals is a measure to judge social mobility. This indicates that if you are from a poor family, you are far less likely to get into a Grammar School and that there is little evidence of actual social mobility in Grammar School areas.Big surprise — I didn’t pass the 11 plus. I went to a failing secondary school in Bedale North Yorkshire — a school full of failing pupils. Judged by the latest Ofsted Report, it needs “improvement”. I went onto taking evening classes and passed GCSE’s at O and A level and eventually a 2.1 B.Sc in Psychology with the OU. I am not an academic genius but not the “write off” suggested by the 11 plus exam system. What the 11 plus system means to me is that we didn’t care enough about our young people and their futures because we were prepared to select a few on the basis of a life-changing exam on one day and to ignore the rest.5.What does passing the 11 plus exam mean?A.Proving the strong academic abilities of students.B.Being admitted into a Grammar School.C.Having a chance to enter a Grammar school.D.Fighting against failures easily.6.What does Chris Honie want to show about the 11 plus exam in his article?A.It’s too difficult.B. It’s not fair to all students.C. It has a long history.D. It’s not that important.7.What’s the author’s attitude toward that Grammar Schools’ increasing social mobility?A.Doubtful.B. Hopeful.C. Concerned.D. Approving.8.What does the author’s own story tell us?A.Failing to pass the 11 plus exam is a disaster.B.One can succeed as long as he tries hard enough.C.Failing the 11 plus means you’ve to try much harder.D.Failing the 11 plus doesn’t always mean poor academic abilities.CIf you want to skip the misery (痛苦) that comes with fighting a seasonal cold or flu, a new research explains why sleep is some of the best preventive medicine. We already knew that not getting enough sleep can lead to an increased risk of getting sick, but Nathaniel Watson, a neurologist and sleep specialist at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said this new research helps explain why.Sleeping poorly can block specific genetic processes in the cells that make up your immune system, which is responsible for fighting off infections and diseases, according to the new study. “Your immune system is not functioning the way it was meant to when you are deprived of sleep,” Watson said. This study is the first one that Watson and his colleagues are aware of that looks at what happens to the immune system’s DNA when you’re not getting adequate sleep. The researchers followed 11 pairs of identical twins for the study. One twin reported sleeping at least seven hours per night, while the other slept approximately one hour less per night. Looking at identical twins helped control the fact that sleep needs vary by person, Watson explained. Genes account for about 50 percent of our sleep needs, meaning identical twins are the best-case scenario (方案) for getting a good comparison. The researchers took blood samples at the end of the study, which revealed that the immune system of the twin who slept less was less active than the twin who slept more. Those who slept less were actually making fewer proteins, the molecules that our bodies run on. “They had an under-performing immune system,” Watson said of the shorter sleepers, “which would put them at higher risk of getting sick.”To control other potential factors that could affect sleep need and immune health, the researchers excluded people from the study who had diabetes, depression or other mental health problems and sleep disorders. They also left out shift workers, smokers, drug users and drinkers.9.What do the underlined words in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Change sleep pattern.B.Benefit from sleep.C.Have to sleep.ck sleep.10.Why did the researchers choose identical twins for the study?A.To find participants more easily.B.To make the results more accurate.C.To make the study more interesting.D.To show sleep needs vary by person.11.What does the author most probably want to show in the last paragraph?A.Many factors can lead to sleep disorder.B.The findings of the study can be reliable.C.Poor sleep could lead to many problems.D.The findings of the study remain to be tested.DLiving in a technological era, we have access to the news more than ever before. There are television sets, magazine covers, Internet blogs, and movies screaming to be read and watched, and there are images of celebrities (公众人物) everywhere. Now, we are faced with a question: What are the effects that superstars have on our youth?Based on a recent survey, 40% of nine and ten year-olds had tried losing weight and at age thirteen, 53% of girls were unhappy with their image. With celebrities creating impossible standards of beauty, more and more young adults are feeling less confident, angrier, and more dissatisfied with their looks. Now, this cannot all be blamed on the media, but with celebrities becoming thinner and thinner, much self-confidence is lost and images of television stars or models have been connected to body displeasure. Two in every three parents feel that their children are being exposed to too much inappropriate content in the media. Since many parents work and are not always at home, kids have access to shows, movies, and the Internet blogs that can tell them things that should be left for parents to explain. There is no possible way to end this media frenzy (疯狂),but experts say that attentive parents, strong teachers and nice friends are an excellent counterbalance (平衡力)to pop culture garbage.Celebrities do not only have a negative impact on the looks and personalities of fans, but also on their health. With famous movie stars lighting up their cigarettes on screen, there has to be some effect on their admirers. 88% to 92% of the top twenty-five box office hits since 1995 have contained tobaccouse. Pop culture celebrities need to support a drug free program instead of using harmful substances. Programs like Above the Influence, run by the Office of National Drug Protection, use the media for good purposes.Celebrities need to change the way they act and how they are viewed. Their actions have more of an effect on us than many people believe they have. Thin, addicted celebrities are changing the way many young fans think and act.12.What can we learn from the recent survey?A.Many young kids are overweight now.B.Celebrities are popular among the youth.C.Celebrities have a bad effect on the youth.D.Young kids are more likely to be concerned about their looks.13.Which of the following will the writer most probably agree to?A.Technology does much harm to people.B.The inappropriate content will be deleted.C.It is urgent for stars to change horrible habits.D.Most celebrities have good influence on people.14.How is the passage organized?A.Topic—argument—conclusion.B.Opinion—discussion—explanation.C.Topic—supporting example—description.D.Main idea—comparison—supporting example.15.What is the passage mainly about?A.How to avoid being affected by celebrities.B.How to make celebrities behave positively.C.Celebrities in technological era.D.Celebrities and their influence on youth.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

I remember the day when my uncle graduated, we had a huge party. And for many years my mother called him "the genius" and listened to his opinion. Today, five of my brothers and sisters have degrees. However, some people think that this increased chances of education is devaluing (使……贬值) degrees. In this essay, I will discuss it with you.People have several arguments for degrees. They say that having so many graduates devalues a degree. People lose respect for the degree holders. It is also thought that education has become a rat race with many graduates competing for the same job. Graduates now have to compete for jobs. Another point is that studying for such a long time leads to learners becoming inflexible (不灵活的).However, I feel strongly that this move to having more education is a positive development. Now almost everyone has a chance to receive higher education, and this will have many advantages for the country and the people. First of all, it is impossible to be overeducated. The more people are educated, the better the world will be, because people will be able to discuss and exchange ideas much more easily. A further point is that people with degrees have much more opportunities. They can try more kinds of jobs and do what they enjoy doing. In conclusion, although there are some problems with increased levels of education, I believe that the country can only progress when all its people are educated bes t.66.
