AA tiger-attacking death at a Chinese zoo is under investigation by local authorities who say the victim climbed a fence into the tiger’s enclosure. The attack occurred Saturday at a resort on Dongqian Lake in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. A local government statement says the victim, identified only by his surname of Zhang, climbed a fence with a friend instead of buying tickets. The statement said Zhang’s wife and two children, as well as his friend's wife, bought tickets to enter the zoo. Zhang reportedly passed through a wire netting and eventually climbed a wall to enter the tiger enclosure, while his friend stayed back, the statement said. A tiger attacked him inside the enclosure, as visitors to the park apparently watched from a distance. Photos and video shared on social media appear to show Zhang lying on the ground as tigers circle him.State television reported one tiger was shot dead by local police, and three others nearby were driven using firecrackers. One video posted online shows a tiger biting his body as people can be heard screaming. Zhang died later in a hospital. The incident drew a protest from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, which said it reflected the problems of keeping tigers and other large cats in a zoo. “Attacks by caged big cats on people-which occur with regularity-illustrate the profound level of stress and anxiety these animals experience every day of their lives,〞PETA’s vice president of international campaigns, Jason Baker, said in a statement. The Nobel Prize in Physics 2016 was divided, with one half awarded to David J. Thouless, the other half to F. Duncan M. Haldane and J. Michael Kosterl itz “for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topologicalphases of matter(物质拓扑相变和拓扑相).〞Haldane said he was “very surprised〞 at the news, adding that he was glad that their discoveries found something previously unnoticed by many, and that they revealed “more possibilities for looking for new materials.〞 He particularly pointed out that a lot of work was still ongoing. The year’s prize amount is 8 million Swedish krona(0.93 million US dollars), and will be split properly between the three winners. The winners are given a sum of money when they receive their prizes, in the form of a document confirming the amount awarded. The amount of prize money depends upon how much money the Nobel Foundation can award each year. The purse has increased since the 1980s, when the prize money was 880,000 SEK per prize. In 2009, the monetary award was 10 million SEK (US$1.4 million; €950,000). In June 2012, it was lowered to 8 million SEK.If there are two winners of a particular prize, the award money is divided equally between the winners. If there are three, the awarding committee can choose to divide the money equally, or award one-half to one winner and one-quarter to each of the others. It is common for winners to donate prize money to benefit scientific, cultural, or charities.4. The women can give away unwanted clothing at a clothes swap event and get something different in return.Recently about 300 women went to a clothes swap at a high school in Springfield, Virginia. It was the largest crowd ever for the area’s popular clothing-swapping group.Daphne Steinberg was having a good day. “For anyone who knows Ann Taylor LOFT, Ann Taylor is a really nice women’s designer and I will totally wear this to work. So I love that, I love that I can equip myself for work, have a good time in doing it, not totally bankrupt myself.〞Sandy Van Dusen likes the idea that clothes are finding new homes instead of being thrown away. “Because it helps to keep the Earth green. There’s no point in my opinion in continuing to buy new clothes when we can reuse what’s already here. Give it a new home--- let somebody else love what you used to love and no longer love.〞Kim Pratt organized the clothing-swapping event in Springfield. She also organized a money-raising activity for the high school’s debate team. It is one of several ways that her group gives to charitable causes.Another is by donating all of the “un-swapped〞clothing to shelters for victims of domestic violence.“I started doing this four years ago, and we’ve been doing it for four years, getting bigger and bigger each time we have a swap.〞She used the social media website meetup to help publicize the events. The website has helped her group grow from 30 members to 1,300. Mrs.Pratt says most of the members respectthe clothing swap rules. But she say competition for desirable fashion can be strong.“We have to tell people sometimes not to hover over the new people coming in with their clothing. As they put it out, some people tend to grab the stuff right out of their hands and it becomes like a free-for-all. We try to avoid that as much as possible.〞8. But this habit can cause us pain in the neck, shoulders and the lower back. Worse still, this posture (姿态) may also make us age more quickly. The most common change in posture as we age is that our bodies gradually return to the foetal (胎儿的) position: the head and shoulders move forwards, the chest curls inwards and the spine (脊柱) goes from a healthy Scurve to a less healthy Cposition. The main cause of this is weak abdominal (腹部的) muscles from years of sittingin a hunched position, according to Carolyn Hewison, physiotherapy manager for the Nuffield chain hospitals group.“If you look around, you see many people over 50, particularly women, who are starting to develop this stance (姿态),” Hewison told the Daily Mail early this month.Hewison suggests standing up straight several times a day with your back to the wall, heels against the skirting board (踢脚线) and your shoulders and head touching the wall to encourage better posture.“Try to maintain the position as you walk away,” she says. “The more often you do this, the more accustomed our abdominal and back muscles become to providing the necessary support.”Besides bad posture, another cause of weak abdominal muscles is sarcopenia (肌肉减少症) — a gradual loss in muscle mass. According to research, from the age of 25 we all lose an average of a fifth of every 450 grams of muscle each year. There is no means of preventing it completely, but latest research suggests the best preventative measure is doing regular weight training to keep up muscle strength.Osteoporosis (骨质疏松) also contributes to the problem, according to Tom Crisp, a sports expert and lower back expert at the Barbican BUPA medical center, London. However, “you can lessen the risk of getting a hump (驼背) just by being active from as young an age as possible to slow the rate of bone loss linked to osteoporosis,” Crisp said.4. What could be the worst effects of bad sitting habits?A.Speeding up the aging process. B. Pain in the neck and shoulders. C. Loss of bone mass. D. Loss of muscle mass.5. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 3?A. The change in posture. B. Years of bad posture while sitting. C. Weak abdominal muscles. D. The main cause of posture change. 6.According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Standing up straight frequently can contribute to better posture.B. Doing regular weight training can completely prevent sarcopenia.C. From the age of 30, people lose a fifth of every 450 grams of muscle each year. D. Old people no longer have any abdominal muscles.7.What can be concluded from the article?A. Weak abdominal muscles lead to sarcopenia.B. Osteoporosis is the main cause of weak abdominal muscles.C. Our bone mass doesn't experience a decrease until the age of 25.D. Doing regular sport at a young age can keep bones and muscles stronger.CWeaving hammocks(吊床) is an art that takes a sharp eye, a skilled hand and lots of patience. But in Lenwood Haddock’s case, being blin d works to his advantage. His trained, sensitive hands can perfectly handle every step of the complicated process. Since beginning his craft in 1986, Lenwood has woven about 145,000 perfect hammocks. Now 61, Lenwood lost his sight in 1973, at age 18, during a hunting accident. “My whole working career has been blind,” he says. He first found a job as a woodworker, but when that organization closed, the North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind connected him with Hatteras Hammocks. On his fir st day of work, “I did a total of one hammock,” Lenwood recalls, laughing. “And then I came home and laid on the sofa and went to sleep. I lift weights, but I wasn’t as tough as I thought until I started weaving. It takes a lot of energy, and you’re standing up all day.”In time, however, Lenwood got into a good working rhythm and found he had a gift for the job. At first he worked on-site at the company, but after a year Lenwood moved his operation to the home workshop where he’d worked for 10 years du ring his woodworking days.Since Lenwood began with Hatteras Hammocks 30 years ago, the company has acquired other brands and changed its name to The Hammock Source. Today, it is the world’s largest maker and seller of hammocks, all built by hand.8. Which of the following is needed in weaving hammocks?A. Poor eyesight.B. Sensitive mind.C. Untrained craft.D. Full patience.9. How old was Lenwood Haddock when he began weaving hammocks?A. 18 years old.B. 26 years old.C. 31 years old.D.61 years old.10. How did Lenwood Haddock feel after he has finished his first hammock?A. Disappointed.B. Exhausted.C. Energetic.D. Bored.11. What is the best title of the passage?A. The Success of the Hammock Source CompanyB. The Blind Craftsman Who Makes Perfect HammocksC. How to Weave Perfect Hammocks by HandD. How to Become a Successful CraftsmanDThe girls in this sixth grade class in East Palo,California, all have the same access to computers as boys. But researchers say,by the time they get to high school, they are victims of what the researchers call a major new gender gap in technology.Janice Weinman of the American Association of University Woman says,“Girls tend to be less comfortable than boys with the computer. They use it more for word processing rather than for problem solving, rather than to discover new ways in which to understand information.”After reexamining a thousand studies, the American Association of University women researchers found that girls make up only a small percentage of students in computer science classes.Girls consistently rate themselves significantly lower than boys in their ability and confidence in using computers.

AMany of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed〔有缺陷〕?If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else. You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that youare not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior〔自卑〕 because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person. The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.1. According to the author ___________ plays an important role in making friends.A. admitting your shortcomingsB. self criticismC. modestyD. confidence2. If you are not liked by a person, _________.A. you should find the reason in yourselfB. you’d better talk with the person face to faceC. you may not be the one to be blamedD. you and that person misunderstand each other3. We can learn from the third paragraph that ____________ .A. your good qualities may turn out to be your flawsB. your weakness may also be your strengths in some wayC. your negative qualities cause a person to reject youD. you’ll have few friends if your flaws are bigger than your good qualities4. Which of the following is true according to the author?A. It is important to lose weight.B. It is easier for a wealthy person to make friends.C. Inner qualities are more important than physical appearance.D. If you are not beautiful enough, try to improve your physical beauty.BTired of Working in Your Country? With over 500 instructors and 20 years of experience, we are the leader in the field of teaching foreign languages. His poor jacket, patched (打补丁的) trousers, and worn-out shoes made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that sparkled〔闪光〕like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips that held a steady smile. He walked toward a table by the window. A young waitress watched him and ran over to him, saying, “Here, Sir. Let me give you a hand with that chair.〞Without a word, he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the chair away from the table. Supporting him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she pushed the table up close to him, and leaned his cane against the table where he could reach it.In a soft, clear voice he said, “Thank you, Miss.〞“You’re welcome, Sir.〞She replied. “My name is Mary. I’ll be back in a moment. If you need anything, just wave at me.〞After he had finished a hearty meal of pancakes, bacon, and hot lemon tea, Mary brought him the change, helping him up from his chair and out from behind the table. She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, “Come back and see us, Sir!〞He nodded a thank you and said softly with a smile, “You are very kind!〞When Mary went to clean his table, she was shocked. Under his plate she found a business card and a note written on the napkin, under which was a $ 100 bill. The note on the napkin read, “Dear Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect yourself, too. It shows by the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness. Your kind gestures will shine through those who meet you.〞The man she had served was the owner of the restaurant. But this habit can cause us pain in the neck, shoulders and the lower back. Worse still , this posture (姿态) may also make us age more quickly. The most common change in posture as we age is that our bo dies gradually return to the foetal (胎儿的) position: the head and shoulders move forwards, the ches t curls inwards and the spine (脊柱) goes from a healthy Scurve to a less healthy Cposition. The main cause of this is weak abdominal (腹部的) muscles from years of sitting in a hunched position, accor ding to Carolyn Hewison, physiotherapy manager for the Nuffi eld chain hospitals group.“If you look around, you see many people over 50, particularly women, who are starting to develop this stance (姿态),” Hewison told the Daily Mail early this month.Hewison suggests standing up straight several times a day wi th your back to the wall, heels against the skirting board (踢脚线) and your shoulders and head touching the wall to encoura ge better posture.“Try to maintain the position as you walk away,” she says. “The more often you do this, the more accustomed our abdomi nal and back muscles become to providing the necessary sup port.”Besides bad posture, another cause of weak abdominal musc les is sarcopenia (肌肉减少症) — a gradual loss in muscle mass. According to research, f rom the age of 25 we all lose an average of a fifth of every 45 0 grams of muscle each year. There is no means of preventing it completely, but latest rese arch suggests the best preventative measure is doing regular weight training to keep up muscle strength.Osteoporosis (骨质疏松) also contributes to the problem, according to Tom Crisp, a sports expert and lower back expert at the Barbican BUPA m edical center, London. However, “you can lessen the risk of getting a hump (驼背) just by being active from as young an age as possible toslow the rate of bone loss linked to osteoporosis,” Crisp said .4. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 3?A. The change in posture.B. Years of bad posture while sit ting.C. Weak abdominal muscles.D. serious issue: clean water, which is unusual for an
11-year-old from Long Island.
Audrey Zhang, a fifth-grader from Levittown, N.Y, is the
winner of this year’s Doodle 4 Google contest, rising to the
top of some 100, 000 entries on the theme of “draw one thing to make the world a better place.”
Her piece, titled “Back to Mother Nature,”describes a detailed water-cleaning machine. Zhang worked with a team of artists at Google to animate(使……生动)her drawing.。
