People here change jobs and move house quiteoften. As a m result, they have a lot of relationships that often last only mashort time, and they need to get to know people quickly. So it´s normal to havefriendly conversations with people that they have just met, and you can talk aboutthings that other cultures would regard as personal. On the other hand, there are more crowded and less mobile societies where long-termrelationships are more important. A Malaysian or Mexican business person, for example, willwant to get to know you very well before he or she feels happy to startbusiness. But when you do get to know each other, the relationship becomes muchdeeper than it would in a mobile society. To Americans, both Europeans and Asians seem cool and formal atfirst. On the other hand, as a passenger from a less mobile society puts it,it´s no fun spending several hours next to a stranger who wants to tell you allabout his or her life and asks you all sorts of questions that you don´t want to answer. Cross-cultural differences aren´t just a problem for travelers, but also for people in daily life. Some societies have " universalist ´´cultures. These societies strongly respect rules, and they treat every personand situation in basically the same way. "Particularist" ( 强调特性的)societies also have rules, but they are less important than thesociety´s unwritten ideas about what is right or wrong for a particularsituation or a particular person. So the normal rules are changed to fit theneeds of the situation or the importance of the person. {TS} What can be learned fromParagraph 1?(单选题)A. People from a mobile society disliketalking about personal affairs.B. Short-term relationships are common ina mobile society.C. Americans tend to make more friendsthan people from other cultures.D. The autobiography totals more than 5,000 pages, and likely won´t be all sunshine and roses.Itseems that Twain harbored some bitterness against former girlfriends and ex-friends.He also writesnegatively about politicians of his day, such as Teddy Roosevelt. It´s likely that he requested sucha long lead time for the memoirs because he didn´t want to hurt the feelings of anyone mentioned inthis work. Although small sections of the memoirs have been previously published, the autobiography hasnever been available in full, and should provide great insights into the man behind the classicbooks. The first volume of the set will be available in November, and the trilogy is being publishedby the University of California, Berkeley.“There are so many biographies of Twain, and many of them have used bits and pieces of theautobiography,”editor Robert Hirst told The Independent.“But biographers pick and choose whatbits to quote.By publishing Twain´s book in full, we hope that people will be able to come to theirown complete conclusions about what sort of a man he was. Soon I would be on my own, making my own decisions, doing what I wanted and it meant going to school with boys ― a welcome change coming from an all-girl high school. There was never any question in my mind that I would go to a college away from home. My mother’s idea, on the another hand, was just the opposite. Trying her best not to force her ideas on me, she would subtly(含蓄地)ask whether I had considered particular schools―all of whichhappened to be located in or near my hometown of Chicago. Once it was established that, if it was financially feasible(可行的), I would go away anyway, my family’s ideas changed. Their concern shifted from whether I was going away to how far I would go. The schools I was considering on the east Coast suddenly looked far more attractive than those in California. But which college I would attend was just one of what seemed like a never-ending list ofunknowns. What would college be like? Would I be unbearably lonely not knowing anyone else who was going to the same school?… What if the college I selected turned out to be a horrible mistake? Then panic set in. My feelings took a 180-degree turn.21. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the writer according to the passage? A) She graduated from a high school for girls only. But he or she may not be!While we can’t deny the fact that people can give the impression that they are bored, anxious, friendly or angry just by the sound of their voice.A French friend of mine once said to me, Your accent in French is excellent but you will never sound like a Frenchman until you put all your heart into your voice. It is a pity because you are a lively person and yet you don’t sound lively to a Frenchman! We learn the grammar and vocabulary and even the correct pronunciation of the foreign people, but we may forget the important emotional effect of the music of our speech, for British people, the intension of language is attractive. That is to say, the rise and fall in the sound of our voice when we speak really matters. It’s unfortunate that the intonation of some other countries can often communicate the wrong meaning.British people sometimes feel offended because they think the other person is unfriendly even if he has spoken a perfect English sentence! And this failure of communication can also happen between British people themselves. If you want to communicate successfully with another person, you may have to think about the music of your own voice.Especially when you meet someone from a different part of your country or from another country, you should be careful! Don’t judge them only by their intonation! What does the writer want to show through the example in the second paragraph()A.To learn a foreign language well, we must learn the sound andpronunciation wellB.Grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are not the only important elements in learning foreign languageC.A person with a flat, dull voice will not give other good impressionD.In learning a foreign language, we must talk to the native speakers fluently48.Helping a sick neighbour with some repair work in spare time is an example of ________()A.instrumental supportrmational supportC.social companionshipD.the strengthening of self-respect49.Passage TwoNo one knows exactly how many disabled people(残疾人)there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight. Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people’s attitude towards them.Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or couldnot hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which countsThe first paragraph tells us that()A.the number of disabled people in India is the greatestB.there are less than 450 million disabled people in the worldC.there are more than 450 million disabled people in the worldD.the number of disabled people in India is equal to the total population of Canada50.The coming paragraph will probably discuss how to cope with ________()A.drunken drivingB.drunken jaywalkingC.alcohol related pedestrian accidentsD.traffic accidents involving children51.50.____()52.One of the most important ways an individual can reduce pollution is by conserving energy. Conserving energy reduces the air pollution created by power plants. Driving less is one of the best ways to save energy and avoid polluting the air.People can save electricity by buying more efficient light bulbs and home appliances. People can also conserve by using appliances less often. People can also buy products that are safe for the environment. For example, households can help reduce water pollution by using fewer toxic cleaning products. If consumers refuse to purchase harmful products, manufacturers will stop making them.People can also help reduce pollution by eating less meat. Farmers use large quantities of fertilizer and pesticides to raise the production of grain on which cattle, hogs, and poultry feed. Farmers would use much less fertilizers and pesticides if people chose to eat less meat and more grains, beans and vegetables. If consumers would accept produce with slight blemishes or imperfections, farmers could reduce their use of chemicals. One of the simplest ways individuals can prevent pollution is by reusing products. For example, some milk suppliers use glass bottles instead of paper cartons. The bottles may be refilled and used again. People can reuse old paper or plastic bags to carry groceries or to hold garbage. When people reuse products, they avoid both the pollution associated with the creation of a new product and the pollution caused when the product is thrown out.The most important way people can fight pollution is to learn as much as possible about how their actions affect the environment. Then they can make intelligent choices that will reduce damage to the planetThere are several ways, listed in the passage, for individuals to conserveenergy except()A.driving lessing more efficient light bulbs and home appliancesing appliances less oftening less fertilizer and pesticides53.What can we know about communication through print for children()A.It enables children to gain more social informationB.It develops children's interest in reading and writingC.It helps children to memorize and practise information moreD.It can control what children are to learn六、作文题(1题)54.Directions:For this part, you are allowed to write A Letter of Complaint.
