Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)My l4-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat almost at the same time. It was hanging at a secondhand clothing store. While the other coats looked rather depressed, this one looked as if it were holding itself up. The thick, black wool of the chesterfield(长大衣) was soft and unworn. It was beautifully tailored and had an unbelievable price tag of $28. We looked at each other, saying nothing, but John's eyes shone. Dark, woolen coats were popular with teenage boys, but could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better, bearing that touch of classic elegance from long ago.John tried it on and turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror with a serious, studied expression that soon changed into a smile. The fit was perfect.John wore the coat to school the next day and came home with a grin. "How did the kids like your coat?" I asked. "They loved it!" he said merrily, carefully folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat.Over the next few weeks, a change came over John. Agreement replaced protest, quiet, reasoned discussion replaced argument. He became more sensible, more polite, more thoughtful, eager to please. “Good dinner, Mom,” he would say every evening. One day when I suggested that he might start on homework before dinner, John, who was always putting off doing stuff, said, “You’re right. I guess I will.”When I mentioned this incident to one of his teachers and remarked that I didn't know what caused the changes, she said laughing. "It must be his coat!" At the library, we ran into a friend who had not seen our children for a long time, “Could this be John?" he asked, looking up to John's new height, assessing the style of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another.Sometimes, watching John leave for school, I'm reminded of what it felt like to be at his age ─ a time when it was as easy to try on different approaches to life as it was to try on a coat.54. Why did John’s eyes shine when he saw the coat?A. It was the first time that he had been to a secondhand store.B. It was pleasant for him to share the same taste with mom.C. He fell in love with that coat and wanted to put it on.D. He managed to get his mom to buy him a new coat.55. What does the underlined word “grin” in paragraph 3 refer to?A. A big smile.B. A sad look.C. A jealous remark .D. An anxious thought.56. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. There was a trend of loving such coats among teenage boys then.B. John used to be disobedient towards parents’ demands.C. John acted like a gentleman after wearing the coat.D. The teacher didn’t understand why John changed a lot.57. Which of the following might the best title?A. A Special Shopping ExperienceB. A Caring MotherC. A Magical CoatD. John’s Taste for Clothing(B)Most people think of zoos as safe places for animals, where struggles such as difficulty finding food and avoiding predators don't exist. Without such problems, animals in zoos should live to a ripe old age.But that may not be true for the largest land animals on Earth. Scientists have known that elephants in zoos often suffer from poor health. They develop diseases, joint problems and behavior changes. Sometimes, they even become unable to have babies. To learn more about how captivity(监禁) affects elephants, a team of international scientists compared the life spans of female elephants born in zoos with female elephants living outdoors in their native lands. Zoos keep detailed records of all the animals in their care, documenting factors such as birth dates, illnesses, weight and death. These records made it possible for the researchers to analyze 40 years of data on 800 African and Asian elephants in zoos across Europe. The scientists compared the life spans of the zoo-born elephants with the life spans of thousands of female wild elephants in Africa and Asian elephants that work in logging camps (伐木场), over approximately the same time period. The team found that female African elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16.9 years. Their wild counterparts who died of natural causes lived an average of 56 years--more than three times as long. Female Asian elephants followed a similar pattern. In zoos, they lived 18.9 years, while those in the logging camps lived 41.7 years.Scientists don't yet know why wild elephants seem to live so much better than their zoo-raised counterparts. Georgia Mason, a biologist at the University of Guelph in Canada who led the study, thinks stress and obesity(肥胖) may be to blame. Zoo elephants don't get the same kind of exercise they would in the wild, and most are very fat. Elephant social lives are also much different in zoos than in the wild, where they live in large herds and family groups.Another finding from the study showed that Asian elephants born in zoos were more likely to die early than Asian elephants captured in the wild and brought to zoos. Mason suggests stress in the mothers in zoos might cause them to have babies that are less likely to survive. The study raises some questions about acquiring more elephants to keep in zoos. While some threatened and endangered species living in zoos reproduce successfully and maintain healthy populations, that doesn't appear to be the case with elephants.58. According to the first two paragraphs, unlike other zoo animals, zoo elephants _______ .A. have difficulty eating food.B. 1ive to a ripe old age.C. are not afraid of predators.D. develop health problems.59. Which of the following about the international scientists' research on the lifespans of elephants is NOT true? (See paragraph 3)?A. They compared zoo elephants with wild elephants.B. They kept detailed records of all the elephants in their care.C. They analyzed the records of the elephants kept in zoos.D. The zoo-born elephants they studied are kept in European zoos.60. What do the scientists find in their research?A. Female elephants live longer than male elephants.B. Female zoo elephants live longer than their wild counterparts.C. Female zoo elephants die much earlier than their wild counterparts.D. Elephants in zoos and those in the wild enjoy the same long life spans.61. Which of the following does the author suggest in the last paragraph?A. It may not be a wise policy to keep elephants in the zoo.B. Elephants are no longer an endangered species.C. Zoo-born elephants should be looked after more carefully.D. Zoos should keep more animals except elephants.Section C (6’)Fishing is probably the world’s most popular sport. People spend many dollars each year on items like boats and four-wheel-drive vehicles. In addition, they spend money on fishing equipment, bait, fuel and boat repairs. And you can see that fishing can be an expensive pastime. Fishing lovers believe that their hobby is worth it. Others say that fishing is spoiling the environment and that it is a cruel hobby.Supporters of fishing say that it is a nice hobby. Firstly, of the millions of people who fish for fun, most only catch enough fish to feed their families. They catch fish that are found in large numbers, so there is little danger to the species.Secondly, recreational fishermen contribute to the economy. They spend money on equipment and other items, and they also spend it indirectly by paying taxes on their equipment and fuel. Those who travel to fishing spots pay for accommodation and airfares. This money keeps people in work and provides new jobs each year.Thirdly, fishing is relaxing and fun so it lessens stress. Instead of turning to drugs or alcohol, it is far better to go fishing. People who are relaxed are generally healthier and much nicer to be near --- except for the smell of the bait! Those who are against fishing say that there are too many fish thoughtlessly taken from rivers, lakes, streams and oceans. This could lead to the dying out of some species. Modern cars and boats mean that people can fish in remote areas of the world, so no place is safe from greedy fishermen who take both males and females, leaving few fish to produce young. Those against fishing also say that it is a blood sport, which means that an animal must die so that a human can have fun. Many of the fish caught for sport are not available for eating, so they are thrown away. Once hooked, fish have no chance of escape.(Answer the questions or complete the statements in no more than 8 words.)62. List four items which people spend their money for fishing.__________________________________________________________________________. 63. According to Paragraph 2, why does fishing cause little danger to the species? __________________________________________________________________________. 64. The underlined word “which” in the last paragraph probably refers to___________________.第II卷(共25分)I. Like high heels and affordable housing, chewing gum appears to be going 42Gum’s popularity has been fading globally thanks to increased competition from products like breath mints and mobile phones distracting us from impulse purchases while shopping. The pandemic, moreover, 43 ·accelerated gum’s decline.Even after people 44 from lockdown, sales didn’t recover. Gum sales worldwide in 2023 were 10% below 2018 figures. In the US, the drop has been particularly pronounced: last year 1.2 billion units of gum were sold in the US, 32% fewer than in 2018.However, chewing gum, in various forms, is one of the oldest habits there is. Stone age teenagers were chewing birch bar k tar possibly for pleasure, medicinal purposes, or to use it as a glue. Gum has also been loaded with culturalmeaning and the subject of various 45 panics. Some people believe it is a marker of the bad kids or a habit of the lower class.Despite a certain amount of social stigma(污名)attached to gum, it has - until relatively recently -been a wildly successful product. That’s thanks to William Wrigley Jr, who was a marketing and advertising genius. Wrigley always 46 to find a way to make gum relevant and insert it into consumer culture. For example, Wrigley advertised the idea that chewing gum was a health aid that would help digestion and would relieve stress. This year the Wrigley brand’s owner —Mars—came out with an ad campaign it hopes will revive gum’s 47 by positioning it as an almost instant stress reliever. Linking gum with wellness worked in the 1910s, but is it going to work now? Alex Hayes at the food consultancy is 48 optimistic. “The global well ness market is estimated to be worth more than $1.5 trillion, so it’s no surprise that Mars wants a piece of the pie,” Hayes says. “We’ve seen the success of categories such as tea promoting their products via functional 49 and messaging-teas for good sleep, mental clarity, stress relief, etc. So it comes as no surprise that Mars is risking the same 50 .” But he also notes, customers are increasingly worried about processed foods and are eager to move away from artificial 51 . There’s still ongoing discussion on just how effective repositioning chewable plastic as a health supplement is going to be. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. It’s safe to say Jeremy Scott is having a lucky year. In March while working as a chauffeur, he told his boss about his plans to set up a driving business. By the end of the journey, Scott’s boss had offered to 52 his idea-a starting capital along with the gift of a £110,000 limousine(豪车)to kick start the business.Of course, there’s an element of luck to everyone’s career. Whether you’re a chief executive or an artist — your 53 won’t be based on hard work alone. For example, the place you were born 54 your education. It determines whether you learn to read, write or complete qualifications, which 55 limits your career choices. Many people believe success is down to talent and hard work, but “this is because most people underestimate the role of 56 ”, says psychologist Dr Elizabeth Nutt Williams. “We do a lot of work to prepare for ourcareers-education, training, taking advantage of mentoring-all of which tend to be in our control.” People don’t like to acknowledge the role of luck in their work, as it 57 this feeling of being in control, adds Williams.Everyone remembers working hard, so people are more likely to overestimate how much of their success is down to diligence than something much more 58 like luck. The reality of success (at least in terms of 59 )is less clear cut. In the UK, studies show where you are born is likely to determine how much you earn.2017 research found that there is a “class pay gap’’, where professional employers from 60 backgrounds are paid almost £7,000 less a year — despite having the same role, education and experience as colleagues from more privileged families. 61 , black graduates earn up to 23% less per hour than white university leavers, whereas woman in the UK earn 14% less on average than men.Socio-economic status also plays a big role in the 62 you enter. A recent study by the Debrett’s Foundation found seven in every 10 young people aged 16-25 use 63 to get their first job. While research has shown that less able, richer children are 35% more likely to become high earners than their brighter. poorer peers. The truth is: chance and coincidences 64 our careers more than we like to think. Realizing that parts of your career are out of your control sounds 65 , but being grateful for the role of luck in your career can actually make you more fortunate. This is because when you acknowledge the role of luck in your work, you become prepared to take advantage of more fortunate moments. “Chance events occur·but it is all about the individual’s 66 to see those events as possibilities and their willingness to take a risk,” says Williams.52.A.challenge B.adopt C.finance D.reject53.A.performances B.accomplishments C.assessments D.outcomes54.A.accounts for B.applies to C.makes up for D.depends on55.A.in reward B.after all C.in turn D.by nature56.A.chance B.accident C.education D.diligence57.A.emphasizes B.overlooks C.maintains D.weakens58.A.manageable B.vital C.slippery D.minor59.A.reputation B.income C.education D.occupation60.A.wealthier B.poorer C.unique D.diverse61.A.Nevertheless B.Contrarily C.Consequently D.Similarly62.A.profession B.circle C.community D.university63.A.certificates B.online platforms C.career fairs D.family connections64.A.contribute to B.result from C.add to D.hold back65.A.inspiring B.encouraging C.appealing D.discouraging66.A.reluctance B.eagerness C.readiness D.resolutionSection B Passages(A)When you think about coffee alternatives, garlic is probably one of the last things that comes to mind, but that is exactly the ingredient that one Japanese inventor used to create a drink that looks and tastes like coffee.74-year-old Yokitomo Shimotai, a coffee shop owner in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, claims that his unique “garlic coffee” is the result of a cooking blunder he made over 30 years ago, when he burned a steak and garlic while waiting tables at the same time. Intrigued by the burnt garlic’s smell, he mashed it up with a spoon and mixed it with hot water. The resulting drink looked and tasted a lot like coffee. Making a mental note of his discovery, Yokimoto carried on with his job and only started researching garlic coffee again after he retired.Committed to turning his weird drink into a commercial product, Yokitomo Shimotai spent years optimizing the formula, and about five years ago, he finally achieved a result he was satisfied with. To make his dissolvable garlic grounds, he roasts the cloves(蒜瓣)in an electric oven, and after they’ve cooled off, smashes them into fine particles and pac ks them in dripbags.“My drink is probably the world’s first of its kind,” the garlic coffee inventor told Kyodo News. “It contains no caffeine so it’s good for those who would like to drink coffee at night or pregnant women.”“The bitterness of burned garl ic apparently helps create the coffee-like flavor,” Shimotai adds. He claims that, although his garlic coffee does give off an aroma of roasted garlic, it doesn’t cause bad breath, because the garlic isthoroughly cooked. And if you can get past the smell, the drink apparently does taste a lot like actual coffee. If decaf isn’t good enough for you, and you’re in the mood for something new, you can try Yokitomo Shimotai’s garlic coffee at his shop, in the city of Ninohc, lwate Prefecture, or buy your own dripbags for just 324 yen($2.8). 67.Which word is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “blunder” in the second paragraph?A mistake B.show C.mixture D.brand68.Who is NOT suitable to drink garlic coffee?A.A student having trouble with sleep B.A woman bearing a baby.C.A cleaner working on a day shift. In fact, the tension between betting on a sure thing and taking a chance that something unexpected and wonderful might happen troubles human and nonhuman animals alike.Take songbirds, for example. The half-dozen finches(雀)resting at my desk feeder all summer know exactly what they’ll find there: black sunflower seed, and lots of it. Meanwhile, the warblers(莺)exploring the woods nearby don’t depend on this predictable food source in fine weather. As food hunters, they enjoy less exposure to predators and, as a bonus, the chance to meet the perfect mate flying from tree to tree. This “explore-exploit” trade-off(权衡)has prompted scores of lab studies, computer simulations and algorithms (算法), trying to determine which strategy brings in the greatest reward. Now a new study of human behavior in the real world, published last month in the journal Nature Communications, shows that in good times, there isn’t much of a difference between pursuing novelty and sticking to the status quo(原状). When the going gets tough. however, explorers are the winners. The new study, led by Shay O’Farrell and James Sanchirico, both of the Univ ersity of California, Davis, along with Orr Spiegel of Tel Aviv University, examined the routes and results of nearly 2,500 commercial fishing trips in the Gulf of Mexico over a period of 2.5 years. The study focused on “bottom longline” fishing, a system where hundreds of lines are attached to a horizontal bar that is then lowered to reach the sea bed. Dr. O’Farrell explained the procedure this way: Go to a location and put the line down. Stay for a few hours. The lines are a mile long and have a buoy (浮标)at either end. When they pull that up, they assess the catch, and then decide if they will stay or move on to a different spot.Over two years of collecting data under various climate conditions, the researchers discovered that the fishermen were fairly c onsistent. “The exploiters would go to a smaller set of locations over and over, and go with what theyknow,” Dr. O’Farrell said. The explorers would constantly try a wider range; they’d sample new places. In the long run, there wasn’t a huge difference in payoffs between the two groups, perhaps due to the sharing information between fishing crews, said Dr. O’Farrell. But in challenging times, the study’s message was clear: “You can try new things in the face of uncertainty.”74.The author takes the songbird as an example to indicate that ______.A.like birds, humans tend to be satisfied with the predictableB.some birds are used to looking for food instead of being fedC.there exist the conservative and the adventurous like humansD.birds choose different ways to look for food in different weather75.According to the third paragraph, people who mastered “explore-exploit” trade-off ______.A.will choose either to pursue novelty or keep the status quoB.are ready to risk in time of difficultyC.will be tough in good times and bad timesD.will grow to be experts in lab studies76.Which can be inferred from the new study led by Shay O’Farrell and James Sanchirico?A.The two groups react to the unexpected differently.B.The “explore-exploit” trade-off helps scientific research a lot.C.The exploiters are used to fishing based solely on their experience.D.The explorers tend to achieve more than the exploiters in the long run.77.Which of the following can be the best title for passage?A.How the Exploiter differs from the Explorer B.How to Become a Productive FishermanC.What is “Explore-Exploit” Trade-off D.When to take risks mattersSection CDirections: Read the following passage. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. The Maya loved cacao so much that they used the beans as currency. They also believed it is good for you—which many people still say today about cacao’s most famous byproduct, chocolate. 78 . While some have suggested that less than an ounce of dark chocolate might improve heart health, much of the research doesn’t involve eating actual chocolate but rather its components — flavanol, especially.79 . In a clinical trial of 21,000 adults, they found that the half of the group that took500mg of. cocoaflavanol supplements daily had a significantly lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease than those who had taken a placebo(安慰剂).Flavanols may also boost insulin sensitivity, according to some studies, which might be helpful in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes(糖尿病). 80 . Those at risk of diabetes might be wise to choose a cacao-inspired supplement instead of eating chocolate—and the sugar it contains. Other research suggests that the flavanols found in cacao (also present in fruits, vegetables, and tea)could slow cognitive decline during aging, or even boost brain performance by improving blood flow to the cerebral cortex. What these findings mean for chocolate is limited, however. Participants would have had to eat multiple fat and sugar filled chocolate bars a day to source 500mg of flavanols. 81 . So understanding why certain types of chocolate are healthier than the rest is the focus of further research.Ⅳ.Fill in the BlanksHow sneaker culture took over the worldSneakers have come a long way from when they were first invented in 1860s England for the upper-class playing croquet(槌球)and tennis.Long worn for function 82 82 fashion, today sneakers have become an entire culture—both a form of self-expression and a high art found in museum exhibits and designer auction houses.83 transformed sneaker culture into a true phenomenon was the 1985 release of Nike’s Air Jordan 1s. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)To the cheering of taxi drivers and the honking of horns, the comedian and actor Eddie Izzard ran into London yesterday to complete his 43rdmarathon in 52 days. In total he had covered 1,100 miles. His 43 marathons were in aid of the charity Sports Relief , which raises money for the poorall over the world. So far Izzard has raised more than£200,000.Fighting blisters (水泡) that have caused the nails on his smallertoes to fall off, he ran up The Mall and into Trafalgar Square, where he hadstarted 7.5 weeks ago. In finishing he proved what many thought wasan impossible task:that a 47-year-old comedian with no sporting experience could do something a top athlete might find difficult. After only six weeks’ train ing he started out on a journey that would take him to every corner of the British Isles.“The first three weekswere the hardest,” he said. The non-stop pressure on his body made him unable to sleep at night and he would wake exhausted with“blisters on t op of blisters”.But the people he met along the way cheered him up.“People stopped their cars and cheered. They gave me money and food. ” More than 500,000 people “followed ” the comedian, in a different sense, on Twitter.Running into London he looked lea n and muscular.“Everyone says my legs look very good but I thought they looked quite good beforehand,” he said.Simon Blease, 51, a sports doctor and mountain runner who has beenfollowing his progress, was waiting on Tower Bridge.“I didn’t think he coul d do it,” he said.“Like a lot of people I thought he would have a good try,but his body would break down. Someonewith so little training,I find it extraordinary that he has done it.”Asked what he had gained, Izzard said:“I know now I can do that.Sport is one of those words that stopped being part of my life when I was about 14. Sporting success was not something I ever associated myselfwith. ” He now plans to continue jogging and hopes to inspire others into sport.66. Which of the following statements is true about Eddie Izzard?A. He took part in 43 marathon competitions in 52 days.B. He was sponsored by Sports Relief in the running.C. He ran 1,100 miles for the purpose of helping the poor.D. He took the challenge to prove he could be a top athlete.67. What difficulty did Eddie Izzard meet with during the running?A. Injury in his ankles.B.Sleeplessnessat night.C. Pressure to win.D. Inadequate time.68.What Simon Blease said implies that ________.A. he thought Eddie would fail halfwayB. training may not be necessary for marathonrunners C. Eddie is a good model for others to followD. Eddie owed his success to his strong body69. Which of the following words can NOTdescribe Eddie Izzard?A. Humourous.B. Persevering.C. Loving.D. Creative.(B)CAGAN SEKERCIOGLU is an ornithologist (鸟类学家) who works to document and prevent bird extinctions. He’s also a professor in the U.S. who runs an award-winning conservation (保护 ) group in his native Turkey. All those pursuits require flexibility --- and each involves big risks. Why do you do what you do? Who inspired you?I’ve always been drawn to nature. When other kids were playing soccer, I was bringing home insects and other animals. My mom took me to a child psychologist! But my beloved dad is my biggest inspiration. During tough economic times he left a safe accounting job to start Turkey’s first model-airplane company. It lasted 30 years. What are the physical dangers of your work?A whole range of dangers. While surveying birds I ’ve been chased by a brown bear in Alaska and an elephant in Tanzania.’veI been faced with a poisonous snake in Uganda. I’ve been caught between the military and terrorists, mistaken for a spy, held at gunpoint, kidnapped in Ethiopia, and attacked by a masked man in Costa Rica. Honestly, I’m often more afraid of people and traffic than I am of wildlife. Is it politically difficult to be an environmentalist in Turkey? It is when I criticize the institutions that grant my research permits. But it ’smy duty as a scientist to tell the truth. The government talks about conservation, but its priority is to turn nature into cash. So it uses double standards. They are reforesting while cutting down old-growth forests. Actually every river is dammed, and the organization building those dams is responsible for regulating them.’Im trying to stop one that will destroy the Aras River wetlands, where half of Turkey’sbird species live. Yet if I speak out too much, I ’ll be punished for a seemingly official, legal reason. Revenge in Turkey is usually indirect. You spend many hours on advocating conservation. Does that hurt your academic career? Some academics see it as a distraction (游手好闲). So far my school, the University of Utah, has been very understanding and appreciative. But I have to walk a thin line.Do you ever feel scared by all the risks you face?Well, I don ’tactively seek risk. But I don ’tavoid it either. Taking a risk means you can fail. But if you fail, at least you tried. And that ’s all I can do. If I fail in the end, I fail fighting.70. The interviewee’sfather inspired him to ________.A. take risksB. pursue his own goalsC. love natureD. develop his unique character71.Which of the following experiences has the interviewee NOT encountered?A. Being suspected of collecting secret information.72.According to the passage, which of the following can be referred to as advocatingconservation?A. Opposing double standards.B. By saying “I have to walk a thin line.”the interviewee means that ________.A. he should make a balance between the Turkish government and the Universityof UtahB. he should spend more time on research work than onadvocacy C. he should cope with the difficult situation cautiouslyD. he should not do anything against the law(C)The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of thesemay have a thousand connections. Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine withhuman-like ability, but now we have grown used to moving forward at sucha pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps,we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, andif we can we will.It may then take us a long time to make it intelligentby loading in the right software or by altering the architecture.I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon ( 硅 ) will arise first to compete and then exceed (赛过) their human ancestors. Once they exceed us, they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce ( 生殖 )themselves. Silicon will have ended human beings’ long control. And we will nolonger be able to claim ourselves to be the finest intelligence in theknown universe. As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans andas their cost falls through economies of scale, we may use them to expand our frontiers, first on earth through their ability to hold out againstenvironments harmful to ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the oceanbeds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealththis new age will bring and the technology it will provide, theconstruction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to thousandsof millions of people, will be within our power.74. In what way can we make a machine intelligent?A. By making it work in such environments as deserts or oceans.B. By working hard for 10 or 20 years.C. By properly programming it or changing its structure.D. By reproducing it.75.What does the writer think about machines with human-like ability?A. He believes they will be useful to human beings.B. He believes that they will claim themselves to be the finest intelligence in space.C. He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.D. He doesn't consider the construction of such machines possible.76.A robot can be used to expand our frontiers when ________.D. its architecture is different from that of the present one77. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.A.after the installation of a great number of cells and connections robots will be capable of self-reproductionB.with the rapid development of technology, people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine with human-like abilityC.once we make a machine as complex as the human brain, it will automatically possess intelligenceD.it is certain that in the distant future robots will have control of the vast, man-made world in spaceSection CDirections: Read the passagecarefully. Dr. Chwang, director of the Department of Food Nutrition, says children are consuming more meat and soft drinks. That is a thoroughdeparture from the traditional diet of vegetables and rice and little meat.“They like big pieces of fried meat with a soft drink. So although theymay eat the same volume of food, their calorie intake( 卡路里摄取量 )has increased. Now about 40 to 45percent of their calories come from fat,”says Chwang.Although on the whole Asians tend towards thinness,Asians ’hospitality (好客) is the first and foremost reason for the fatness oftoday ’s generation, according to Chwang. “Asian people love food, ” she says. “Eating and drinking are important social and family functions.”In the past, however, big meals were only hosted on special occasions as people were more careful with money. In today’s climate of wealth and remarkable consumption,10-course meals are no longer reserved for significant occasions.Needless to say, that children are being spoilt by their parents isanother cause of children’s overweight. More than anyone else, children are on the receiving end of their parents ’ improved circumstances.“In the past, people had four or more children—now, they have one or two,so they tend to spoil them,” says Chwang. “The easiest way is to givethe m ‘quality food ’. Parents think feeding them well is showing theirlove. They feel bad when their children look thin.”When describing the physical condition of most overweight Asian children, Chwang says:“There is a clear relationship between fatnessand indoor play children spend too much time on. Children get fat because they don’t move, and eventually, they don’t want to move because they ’re fat. Thanks to technology, a growing army of children prefervideo games to old outdoor sports.“What do childre n do when watching TV or sitting in front of the computer playing video games? They eatchocolate and drink Coke,” says Chwang.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THANTEN WORDS .)78._______________________ has led to the increase of children’s calorie intake despite the same volume of food.79.Thanks to_______________________, big meals nowadays are no longer enjoyed on special occasions.80.Why do some parents feel bad when their children look thin?81. Take the following tips on how to learn English faster as your starting point and you’ll master this wonderful language in no time!TIP 1. ______Classic literature, paperbacks, newspapers, websites, emails, your social media feed: if it’s in English, read it. Why? Well, this content will be full of juicy new vocabulary, as well as a fair amount you already know. This helps you improve quickly, as repeated exposure to learned vocabulary gives you new examples in context, therefore reinforcing those words in your mind. On the other hand, learning new words and expressions is essential to building your vocabulary, particularly in a language like English with so many words!TIP 2. ACTIVELY TAKE NOTE OF NEW VOCABULARYThis tip is a classic one for good reason: it works! When learning, we often enjoy a new word or phrase so much that forgetting it seems impossible. But trust us, not everything sticks the firsttime. To fight this, get into the habit of carrying around a notebook. Whenever you hear or read a new word or expression, write it down in context: that is, in a sentence and with its meaning noted. This saves you time as you won’t return to that word and ask yourself: “What did that word/expression mean again?”TIP 3. TALK WITH REAL LIVE HUMANSWhat is a language for if not to communicate? It’s true that speaking a language helps it stick in your head far better than only reading or wri ting it. Just think of how many times you’ve heard people say that they “understand, but can’t speak English.” A lot of would-be English speakers have turned talking into a huge obstacle that only serves to psyche them out. Don’t be like that. Seek out native speakers for an informal language exchange, enroll in a course, or take classes online.TIP 4. SUBSCRIBE TO PODCASTS (IN ENGLISH)Like humor? Politics? Blogging? Cooking? With topics covering every interest imaginable, there are English-speaking podcasts out there for you. Subscribe to a few and listen or watch while going to school or work. At first, you might find the native accents difficult, but stick with it and you’ll soon start to understand what you hear (as well as learning lots of new vocabula ry from a native speaker!)66.Which of the following is the best heading for TIP 1?A. START WITH READING WHAT YOU REALL Y NEEDB. USE CONTEXTUAL CLUES TO BUILD YOUR VOCABULARYC. READ ALL THE PRINTED MA TERIALS YOU CAN BUYD. READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON67.The phrase “psyche them out” is closest in meaning to “______”.A. make them discouragedB. cause them troubleC. relieve their stressD. affect their fluency68.Which strategy of learning new words and expressions is NOT mentioned?A. Reading English materials.B. Noting them down in context.C. Talking with native speakers. C. Listening to English podcasts.69.According to the passage, listening to English-speaking Podcasts ______.A. enables you to like humor, politics, blogging and cooking.B. is allowed at school or at work and they can be customizedC. gets you to be gradually familiar with the native accentsD. helps you to overcome the difficulty of learning new words(B)70.This page is intended for those who ______.A. want to visit New England AquariumB. are interested in marine creaturesC. would like to take the MBTA Blue LineD. want to protect our blue planet71.If a visitor would like to enter the New England Aquarium at 5:30 p.m., he can visit it on______.A. Christmas Day72.If a visitor would like to get discounts at the Gift Shop, he can ______.A. choose the entry time onlineB. buy combination ticketsC. join the membershipD. call 617-973-520673.Which statement is NOT true?A. One can choose the entry time in advance at the Box Office.B. Group visits need to be reserved over the phone.C. Unlimited free admission for a year only applies to members.D. The Aquarium is state-owned and supported by admission fees.(C)Spelling bees have always been cute. But they’re about to get cuter, because now they will actually be about something. The National Spelling Bee has announced that hereafter, contestants will have to know the definitions of words as well as how to write them out. The latter is cruel mechanics, which only became a thing to master and compete in because of English’s awkward and random spelling system. In countries where writing actually corresponds regularly with how words are pronounced, there is no such thing as a spelling bee.Yet in those countries, there is often more of a love for the language itself, even among less educated people. And loving your language means a command of its vocabulary beyond the level of the everyday. This appreciation shows up in things they say that would not “translate” into American. A Russian friend of mine once said she fell in love with her husband because of “his Russian.” Note how hard it is to imagine an American woman saying what hooked her on her husband was “his English.” “The way he talked,” maybe, but not something as specific as his command of the language in an artistic sense.I recently attended a conference where Castilians(西班牙王室)gave the opening addresses, in a distinctly formal layer of Spanish. In English this would have sounded extremely boring even at a university. You can buy volumes of high literature and poetry at an ordinary train station in Spain. At Long Island railroad stops in America, not.Yet even in America, there was once a richer love of English for its own sake. H.L. Menckenknocked Warren Harding for “the worst English that I have ever encountered.” Today we have knocked George W. Bush for “the way he talks” but not something as formal as “his English.”Today we live in a society where in 2001, then President of the University of California Richard Atkinson got good press with his announced horror that high school students “spend hours each month —directly and indirectly —preparing for the SAT, studying long lists of verbal analogies(类比)such as ‘untruthful is to mendaciousness’ as ‘circumspect is to caution’.” In the old days, that was called, well, school.Currently, America’s love for language focuses on the informal. Rap and spoken word have reawakened the country to poetry in itself. Texting and Twitter encourage creative uses of casual language, in ways I have celebrated widely. But we’ve fallen behind on enjoying the formal layer of our language. Critics such as Stefan Fatsis have argued that adding a comprehension component to the spelling bee is, ir onically, “small-minded.” It isn’t. It’s getting back in touch with loving our native language, something ordinary in most cultures on earth—but so long unknown to us that the Fatsises and Atkinsons among us can barely imagine it.74.Writing out a word in a spelling bee is difficult because ______.A. it is a thing to master and compete inB. people do not feel it cute any moreC. there is no spelling bee in other countriesD. English spelling system is random75.We can safely conclude from paragraph 2 and 3 that ______.A. less educated people in other countries like the language itselfB. American people don’t appreciate English in its formal formC. an American woman will be easily attracted to a man’s way of talkingD. a formal layer of English can only be found at an American university76.It is implied in Paragraph 5 that ______A. the public felt the same horror as Richard Atkinson didB. SAT didn’t need so much attention from the studentsC. high school students should go to school to prepare SATD. verbal analogies should have been taught in the old days77.According to the author, Americans need spelling bees and vocabulary tests because ______A. they need to avoid being small-mindedB. Rap and spoken words are not artistic enoughC. Fatsises and Atkinsons can barely imagine itD. they need to focus more on formal EnglishIV. Take the following tips on how to learn English faster as your starting point and you’ll master this wonderful language in no time!TIP 1. ______Classic literature, paperbacks, newspapers, websites, emails, your soc ial media feed: if it’s in English, read it. Why? Well, this content will be full of juicy new vocabulary, as well as a fair amount you already know. This helps you improve quickly, as repeated exposure to learned vocabulary gives you new examples in context, therefore reinforcing those words in your mind.On the other hand, learning new words and expressions is essential to building your vocabulary, particularly in a language like English with so many words!TIP 2. ACTIVELY TAKE NOTE OF NEW VOCABULARYThis tip is a classic one for good reason: it works! When learning, we often enjoy a new word or phrase so much that forgetting it seems impossible. But trust us, not everything sticks the first time. It’s true that speaking a language helps it stick in your head far better than only reading or writing it. At first, you might find the native accents difficult, but stick with it and you’ll soon start to understand what you hear (as well as learning lots of new vocabulary from a native speaker!)66.Which of the following is the best heading for TIP 1?A. The Aquarium is state-owned and supported by admission fees.(C)Spelling bees have always been cute. But they’re about to get cuter, because now they will actually be about something. The National Spelling Bee has announced that hereafter, contestants will have to know the definitions of words as well as how to write them out. The latter is cruel mechanics, which only became a thing to master and compete in becaus e of English’s awkward and random spelling system. A Russian friend of mine once said sh e fell in love with her husband because of “his Russian.” Note how hard it is to imagine an American woman saying what hooked her on her husband was “his English.” “The way he talked,” maybe, but not something as specific as his command of the language in an artistic sense.I recently attended a conference where Castilians(西班牙王室)gave the opening addresses, in a distinctly formal layer of Spanish. In English this would have sounded extremely boring even at a university. You can buy volumes of high literature and poetry at an ordinary train station in Spain. At Long Island railroad stops in America, not.Yet even in America, there was once a richer love of English for its own sake. H.L. Mencken knocked Warren Harding for “the worst English that I have ever encountered.” Today we have knocked George W. Bush for “the way he talks” but not something as formal as “his English.”Today we live in a society where in 2001, then President of the University of California Richard Atkinson got good press with his announc ed horror that high school students “spend hours each month —directly and indirectly —preparing for the SAT, studying long lists of verbal analogies(类比)such as ‘untruthful is to mendaciousness’ as ‘circumspect is to caution’.” In the old days, that was called, well, school.Currently, America’s love for language focuses on the informal. Rap and spoken word have reawakened the country to poetry in itself. Texting and Twitter encourage creative uses of casual language, in ways I have celebrated widely. But we’ve fallen behind on enjoying the formal layer of our language. Critics such as Stefan Fatsis have argued that adding a comprehension component to the spelling bee is, ironically, “small-minded.” It isn’t. Ame rican people don’t appreciate English in its formal formC. an American woman will be easily attracted to a man’s way of talkingD. a formal layer of English can only be found at an American university76.It is implied in Paragraph 5 that ______A. the public felt the same horror as Richard Atkinson didB. For ten months the 28 men aboard Shackleton's ship waited and prayed for ice to break. When it finallydid, the Endurance sank, leaving the crew homeless and adrift on a sea of ice in one of the world's most dangerous environments. In January 2000 a luxury ocean liner found itself similarly trapped in the cold waters off Antarctica. Argentine authorities sent off an icebreaker straight away from the nearest naval base, and in 24 hours, all 176passengers and crew were free. The tour company's spokespersonspun the potential disaster as a value-added reward in extreme travel. "The people on board are looking at this as sort of a great adventure, "she said.Ever since Jon Krakauer's book Into Thin Air made Everest a household name, the subculture of adventure has blown up like a Himalayan avalanche(雪崩)into public consciousness. Magazines promise "extreme" content, television, offers adventure programs, and the growing collective fascination with adventure has produced a flow of published accounts about the world's greatest adventurous journey. Nowadays more 4and more people are interested in adventure and this mass appeal makes good business sense. Today the only thing blocking a would-be adventurer's passage to Antarctica is the cost----which typically runs well over 10, 000.Despite very different implications, adventure was just as popular in Shackleton's time. He has little trouble filling the Endurance----5, 000 men are said to have responded to his recruitment(招募)notice:"Men wanted for risky journey. Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. "After five months drifting on ice, the crew were forced to take to their lifeboats to Elephant Island. Reaching the wasteland, Shackleton went on with one lifeboat and five of his best men 1, 300 kilometers across the bone-chilly Scotia Sea to South Georgia Island. Shivering with cold, dressed in rags, Shackleton marched into a whaling station and set about organizing a rescue expedition to Elephant Island. Almost two years after becoming shipwrecked on ice, Shackleton picked up his crew. "Not a life lost, and we have been through hell, "he remarked earnestly.63.We can learn from the first sentence of this passage that__________.A. the age of adventure began with the ship Endurance trapped in iceB. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.Research has shown that two-thirds of human conversation is taken up not with discussion of the cultural or political problems of the day, not heated debates about films we've just watched or books we've just finished reading, but plain and simple __51__.Language is our greatest treasure as a species, and what do we __52__ do with it? We gossip. Are we just natural __54__, of both time and words? Or do we talk a lot about nothing in particular simply to avoid facing up to the really important issues of life? It's not the case according to Professor Robin Dunbar. In fact, in his latest book, Grooming, Gossip and the Evolution of Language, the psychologist says gossip is one of these really__55__issues.Dunbar __56__ the traditional view that language was developed by the men at the early stage of social development in order to organize their manly hunting activities more effectively, or even to promote the exchange of poetic stories about their origins and the supernatural. Instead he suggests that language evolved among women. We don't spend two-thirds of our time gossiping just because we can talk, argues Dunbar—__57__, he goes on to say, language evolved specifically to allow us to gossip.Dunbar arrived at his cheery theory by studying the __58__ of the higher primates(灵长类动物)likemonkeys. By means of grooming--cleaning the fur by brushing it, monkeys form groups with other individuals on whom they can rely for support in the event of some kind of conflict within the group or__59__ from outside it.As we human beings evolve from a particular branch of the primate family, Dunbar __60__ that at one time in our history we did much the same. Grouping together made sense because the bigger the group, the greater the __61__ it provided; on the other hand, the bigger the group, the greater the stresses of living close to others. Grooming helped to __62__ the pressure and calm everybody down. But as the groups got bigger and bigger, the amount of time spent in grooming activities also had to be __63__ to maintain its effectiveness. Clearly, a more __64__ kind of grooming was needed, and thus language evolved as a kind of vocal(有声的)grooming which allowed humans to develop relationship with ever-larger groups by exchanging information over a wider network of individuals than would be possible by one-to-one __65__ contact.51. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage youhave just read.(A)Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive. Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.As children, many of us learn the saying "You can't fool Mother Nature." But maybe you can't trust her, either.66. A plover protects its young from a predator by______.A. getting closer to its youngB. driving away the adult predatorC. leaving its young in another nestD. pretending to be injured67. By "Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky" (paragraph 5), the author means______.A. chimps are ready to attack othersB. chimps are sometimes dishonestC. chimps are jealous of the winnersD. chimps can be selfish too68. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.B. The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.C. Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.D. Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.69. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. Do animals lie?B. Does Mother Nature fool animals?C. How do animals learn to lie?D. How does honesty help animals survive?(B)Let's say you want to hit the gym more regularly this year. How do you make that happen? What is the cue in this resolution?A. The Harry Potter poster.B. Reading 30 pages of an English novel.C. An English newspaper.D. Watching TV for half an hour.(C)If you could be anybody in the world, who would it be? Your neighbour or a super star? A few people have experienced what it might be like to step into the skin of another person, thanks to an unusual virtual reality(虚拟现实)device. Rikke Wahl, an actress, model and artist, was one of the participants in a body swapping experiment at the Be Another lab, a project developed by a group of artists based in Barcelona. She swapped with her partner, an actor, using a machine called The Machine to Be Another and temporarily became a man. "As I looked down, I saw my whole body as a man, dressed in my partner's pants," she said. "That's the picture I remember best."The set-up is relatively simple. Both users wear a virtual reality headset with a camera on the top. The video from each camera is sent to the other person, so what you see is the exact view of your partner. If she moves her arm, you see it. If you move your arm, she sees it.To get used to seeing another person's body without actually having control of it, participants start by raising their arms and legs very slowly, so that the other can follow along. Eventually, this kind of slow synchronised(同步的)movement becomes comfortable, and participants really start to feel as though they are living in another person's body.Using such technology promises to alter people's behaviour afterwards-potentially for the better. Studies have shown that virtual reality can be effective in fighting racism-the bias(偏见)that humans have against those who don't look or sound like them. Researchers at the University of Barcelona gave people a questionnaire called the Implicit Association Test, which measures the strength of people's associations between, for instance, black people and adjectives such as good, bad, athletic or awkward. Then they asked them to control the body of a dark skinned digital character using virtual reality glasses, before taking the test again. This time, the participants' bias scores were lower. The idea is that once you've "put yourself in another's shoes" you're less likely to think ill of them, because your brain has internalised the feeling of being that person. The creators of The Machine to Be Another hope to achieve a similar result. "At the end of body swapping, people feel like holding each other in their arms," says Arthur Pointeau, a programmer with the project. "It's a really nice way to have this kind of experience. I would really, really recommend it toeveryone."74. The word "swapping" (paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to______.A. buildingB. exchangingC. controllingD. transplanting75. We can infer from the experiment at the Be Another lab that______.A. our feelings are related to our bodily experienceB. we can learn to take control of other people's bodiesC. participants will live more passionately after the experimentD. The Machine to Be Another can help people change their sexes76. In the Implicit Association Test, before the participants used virtual reality glasses to control a darkskinned digital character, ______.A. they fought strongly against racismB. they scored lower on the test for racismC. they changed their behaviour dramaticallyD. they were more biased against those unlike them77. It can be concluded from the passage that______.A. technology helps people realize their dreamsB. our biases could be eliminated through experimentsC. virtual reality helps promote understanding among peopleD. our points of view about others need changing constantlySection CDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.More and more corporations are taking an interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR is made up of three broad layers. The most basic is traditional corporate charity work. Companies typically spend about 1% of pre-tax profits on worthy projects. But many feel that simply writing cheques to charities is no longer enough. In some companies, shareholders want to know that their money is being put to good use, and employees want to be actively involved in good works.Money alone is not the answer when companies come under attack for their behavior. Hence the second layer of CSR, which is a branch of risk management. Starting in the 1980s, with environmental disasters such as the explosion at Bhopal and the Exxon Valdez oil spill, industry after industry has suffered blows to its reputation. So, companies often responded by trying to manage the risks. They talk to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and to governments, create codes of conduct(行为准则) and devote themselves to more transparency(透明)in their operations. Increasingly, too. they, along with their competitors, set common rules to spread risks. All this is largely defensive, but there are also opportunities for those that get ahead of the game. The emphasis on opportunity is the third layer of CSR: the idea that it can help to create value. If approached in a strategic way, CSR could become part of a company's competitive advantage. That is just the sort of thing chief executives like to hear. The idea of "doing well by doing good" has become popular.Nevertheless, the business of trying to be good is bringing difficult questions to executives. Can you measure CSR performance? Should you be coo perating with NGOs and you‟re your competitors? Is there any really competitive advantage to be had from a green strategy?Corporate social responsibility is now seen as a mainstream. Big companies want to tell the world about their good citizenship with their devotion to social responsibilities. Done badly, CSR is often just window-dressing and can be positively harmful. Done well, though, it is not some separate activity that companies do on the side, a corner of corporate life reserved for virtue(美德):it is just good business. (Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS)78. Both _________ in some companies find it no longer enough to simply donate money to charities.79. Give one example of the defensive measures of risk management according to the passage.80. With the emphasis on opportunity, the third layer of CSR is meant to_________.81. According to the passage, "good business" (paragraph 6) means that corporations ________ while making profits.第II卷(共47分)I. Does it sound like business as usual? With the high 11 of work, social life, and personal responsibilities, we often find ourselves multitasking. The figure of a multitasker is often portrayed as someone who can handle numerous tasks at once, seamlessly (无缝地) switching between them. However, since the human brain is very 12 in how much we can truly do at one time, this is misleading. Multitasking is the practice of switching 13 from one task to another-and we’re not as good at it as we think. So the overestimation (高估) of ourmultitasking abilities can 14 the quality of work and sacrifice our attention to detail, which can result in errors and missed deadlines in work.Of course, there’s a wide 15 of multitasking pairings. It’s probably fine if you listen to a podcast while doing the dishes. However, when the task requires a quick reaction time, multitasking could be fatal (致命的). A second we lose may not 16 much when doing the dishes, but they could make all the difference when driving a car.The stress that comes with multitasking can also have a negative impact on both mental and physical well-being. Constantly 17 focus from one task to another can lead tiredness. Additionally, the pressure to perform well on 18 tasks can lead to feelings of anxiety and burnout. In a professional setting, the ability to multitask is often seen as a (n) 19 quality. However, it is essential to 20 it with care, finding a balance between staying productive and maintaining a firm grasp on our well-being.Invest in Your Passion to Find SuccessAchievements aren’t easy. Bring down my raincoat and traveling cloak, and some strong shoes, although we will do little walking. Hurry up!”⑨ Passepartout tried to reply, but he could not. He mechanically began to make the preparations for departure. Around the world in eighty days! Was his master a fool? No. Was this a joke, then? They were going to Dover. That was good! They were going to Calais. That was good again! After all, Passepartout, who had been away from France for five years, wouldn’t be sorry to set foot in his own country again. Perhaps they would go somewhere as far as Paris, and it would do his eyes good to see Paris once again.⑩ By eight o’clock Passepartout had packed the bag. Then, he went down to see Mr. Fogg. Mr. Fogg was completely ready. Under his arm was a book containing timetables showing the arrival and departure of steam boats and trains. He checked his bag again and ensured everything he needed was in it.⑪ “Take this bag,” Fogg said, handing it to Passepartout. “Take good care of it because there are twenty thousand pounds in it.” Passepartout nearly dropped the bag, as if the twenty thousand pounds had been in gold and almost weighed him down. It can do most of the text-generation tasks that involve natural language for communication. Examples of these tasks are text completion (e.g. email and report writing), paraphrasing, text summarization, machine translation, and question-answering. In addition, it can also be used for conversational AI applications, such as chatbots and virtual assistants. While the ChatGPT platform has a wide range of applications related to text generation, outputs should be evaluated critically and used with caution, as they may contain false, biased, or outdated information. The use of homework aids in higher education is not new. For years, students have used sites like Quizlet to cut comers as they complete homework assignments or take online quizzes. In response, teachers have had to adapt to these challenges and design assessments that can avoid the use of these tools.I view ChatGPT in the same light. Essentially, ChatGPT collects information readily available online to form a response to a given prompt (提示). The AI has no capacity for critical thinking and often misses the mark whenever a prompt requires any critical or abstract thinking If university teachers want to avoid the threat of ChatGPT, then perhaps the strictness of their assignments needs to be increased. While there are many concerns that ChatGPT harms academic assessment, it and better versions may force us to shift our curriculum to higher levels of critical thinking. Beyond this, we may discover ways it can be used to enhance the learning process. If students focus on advanced aspects of their schoolwork, chatbots could assist with more menial (微不足道的) educational tasks. For example, some instructors are experimenting with new forms of student engagement, including project-based learning. Perhaps a chatbot could be used to brainstorm on these projects. Learning effectiveness could be enhanced by customizing the learning process at an individual level to better match a diversified student body.43. What’s the common point between ChatGPT and Quizlet according to the passage?A.They should both be assessed objectively and used carefully.B.They are both widely used by teachers, instructors and faculty.C.They are both sites provided for students to take an online quiz.D.They can both help students take a shortcut when doing homework.44. What’s the main drawback of ChatGPT according to the passage?A.It can only be used for traditional AI applications.B.It’s not accurate or unbiased enough when generating text.C.It cannot the level of critical thinking as high as that of humans.D.It cannot be widely used in higher education or diversified learning.45. What’s the n ew challenge that teachers are facing with the rise of ChatGPT?A.They have to meet the diversified demands of students.B.They have to deal with the cheating problem of students.C.They have to design more strict and precise assignments.D.They have to make the class more effective through advanced techs.46. The villages are a living test to Indonesia’s rich culture and its devotion to preserving traditions. The Revitalizing these villages goes beyond mere economic development. 49 The weaving skills and architectural techniques of Sukarara and Sade villages are not only beautiful, but they are also an inseparable part to the identity of these communities. It’s essential that they strike a balance between progress and preservation. As the journey came to an end, the students carry with them not only the memories of their experiences there, but also the responsibility to make a positive impact on these remarkable places.50 They are optimistic that Indonesian villages can experience meaningful development, ultimately leading to increased opportunities for employment and an improved quality of life.that there is one word more than you need.A. armedB. exceptionC. maintainedD. objectiveE. persistsF. posesG. recognized H. reunion I. shortage J. sufficient K. targeted51. But there is one game at which expert human players continue to dominate machines: Go(围棋). But researchers at Google DeepMind announced today that they’ve created a sophisticated artificial intelligence program that has beaten a Go champion for the first time in history. To understand what the DeepMind researchers did to create such an impressive program you first have to appreciate why Go is such a difficult game for computers. First, Go has a ridiculous number of possible moves and outcomes—according to the researchers, there are more possible positions in Go than the number of atoms in the universe. The reason why computer had a hard time with Go, explains Jonathan Schaeffer, a computer scientist, is that Go players need a large pool of knowledge—past experiences with the game—to draw from. “In chess a computer can follow preprogrammed rules, but it is not workable for Go, because the game is largely about patterns rather than a set of logical rules that can be written down. The DeepMind team’s system addresses both the massive search and lack of knowledge problems. In a newly-published study, they describe combining a search technique and deep learning to overcome these obstacles. To solve the knowledge problem, the researchers used “deep neural networks”—two 13-layer-deep networks that consist of millions of connections and trained them with two methods: For one network, they showed the computer more than 30 million moves from games played by human experts to help the system learn how the best players win; and for both, the researchers had the computer play thousands of games with itself to discover new strategies and learn the game on its own. These two training strategies allowed the computer to recognize patterns in the game and identify what moves gave it the best chance of winning. For the search problem, the researchers exploited the Monte Carlo Tree Search Technique, which allows the system to use statistics to determine the best move, rather than play out every possible outcome. The search technique used by the DeepMind team is not new. What makes DeepMind’s AlphaGo so advanced is the way they put together all the tools, along with the high performance of the deep neural networks. “The main novelty is in how they’ve combined these different ingredients together—they’ve innovated in doing that,” says Yoshua, a computer scientist. Now AlphaGo has an immediate problem: how to beat the world’s best Go player, Lee Sedol. This March the two will play each other in Seoul, South Korea. And although AlphaGo played well against Fan Hui, Schaeffer still predict Sedol will win the match. “But I think the pro will be shocked at how strong the program is,” he says. For now, at least some people are still placing their bets on humans.93. What did AlphaGo achieve for the first time in history according to the passage?A. A ridiculous quantity of results based on how it moves in one game.B. Winning almost all the games against other artificial intelligence program.C. Being the first Google product in Go game.D. Beating a human champion Go expert.94. The researchers made the AlphaGo so impressive a program by ________.A. using Monte Carlo Tree Search, though it’s not a brand new approach to solving the issue.B. implementing a complicated deep-learning system for computer to identify the best move.C. figuring out how to help computer play out all moves and recognize the best possible outcome.D. delicately combining a search method that is not innovative and deep neural networks.95. Why did computer programmers find it extremely hard to design a program for computers to play Go like humans?A. Because in playing Go a man needs to follow a wealth of logical rules.B. Because Go has as tremendous moves and results as any other board game does.C. Because humans always learn lessons from previous games and apply them to the next round.D. Because the massive search and lack of knowledge just can’t be handled anyway.。

Many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. They'll say, "This is my fate, my destiny. I cannot change it." Of course not! You don't have to suffer needlessly. Your destiny depends on you, not on any other outer factors.I know someone who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it. Guess what her lifestyle is? She wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes back home, relaxes, chats with people, watches TV, then goes to sleep. Next day, the same things cycle follows.Huh! Is this what she calls "doing her best"? She believes she has tried her best and just accepts it in her heart that this is the life that God has intended for her to live; that her luck can only change if God wills it. Of course God wants us to be happy and live our life to the fullest, but we have to do our share of exerting (运用) the effort to live the life of our dreams.Remember that you reap what you sow. You just don't sit around and wait for a million dollars to fall from the sky. You have to get off the couch, get your eyes off the TV screen, get your hands off the phone. Don't expect your luck to change unless you do something about it. If something goes wrong, don't just regard it as a temporary(临时的) setback; but use it as feedback. Learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. It's not enough to think positively(积极地); you also have to act positively. If someone's life is in the trouble, do you just hope and pray that things will turn out fine? Of course not! You get to do anything you can to save the person. So it is with your own life. It is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best. In other words, don't just stand (or sit ) there, do something to improve your life.( )13. You can only achieve success when God wills it.D. You should treat yourself in the way you treat friends.( )15. The text is mainly written to advise you to _______.A. understand yourselfB. improve your lifeC. believe in yourselfD. change your normal way第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填空白处的最佳选项。

In the1700s in the Turkey, people in love used to send each other baskets containing a variety of ‘gifts’, such as flowers, stones, feathers, and even charcoal. Each thing in the basket had a special meaning. By figuring out the secret message contained in each item, the person who received the basket began to understand the true feelings of the person who sent it.The idea of sending gifts of love with secret meanings quickly spread to Germany, France, and England. However, as time passed, only sending flowers remained popular. Each different flower holds a different meaning. For example, the flower from an orange tree means, ‘You are beautiful and pure.’ A pink carnation means---My love for you is strong and great.’A yellow rose, on the other hand, means, ‘I saw you with someone else.’Many flower dictionaries have been made to help people understand the meaning of the flowers. Not all of the dictionaries agreed, however, on the meaning of each flower, so a person has to be careful about the flowers they choose to send.By the 1800s, using flowers to send messages had fallen out of fashion, and the more direct way of sending love letters began. Today, flowers are still considered a lovely gift, but the meaning for each kind of flower has been lost.61.300 years ago, Turkish people sent gift baskets to their lovers in order to ________A. ask for helpB. ask for marriageC. express their emotionsD. make some money62. The DeepMind team’s system addresses both the massive search and知识改变命运lack of knowledge problems. Now AlphaGo has an immediate problem: how to beat the world’s知识改变命运best Go player, Lee Sedol. The researchers made the AlphaGo so impressive a program by ________.A. using Monte Carlo Tree Search, though it’s not a brand new approach to solving the issue.B. implementing a complicated deep-learning system for computer to identify the best move.C. figuring out how to help computer play out all moves and recognize the best possible outcome.D. delicately combining a search method that is not innovative and deep知识改变命运。

Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Taiwan police cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely clever act of stealing or an even cleverer cheat. Either way, it could be the perfect crime, because the criminals are birds—horning pigeons! The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car: if you want the car back, pay up then, the car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the pigeon inside. Carrying the money in a tiny bag, the pigeon flies off. There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a clever stay-at-home car thief, however, may in fact be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal mind—one that avoid not only collecting money but going out to steal the car in the first place. Police officer Chen says that the criminal probably has pulled a double trick: he gets money for things he cannot possibly return. Instead of stealing cars, he lets someone else do it and then waits for the car-owner to place an advertisement in the newspaper asking for help. The theory is supported by the fact that, so far, none of the stolen cars have been returned. Also, the amount of money demanded under 3,000 Taiwanese dollars—seems too little for a car worth many times more.Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start a gain, Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal. “We have more important things to do,” he said.58.A fter the car owner received a phone call. Thirty-six percent of those with social anxiety disorder have symptoms for 10 years or more before seeking help, the Anxiety Disorder Association of America reports.Social anxiety disorder is when somebody has a strong, persistent and unreasonable fear of social or performance situations. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Have you ever stood up for a pregnant (怀孕)woman? The reason why people don’t stand up for pregnant ladies on the bus isn’t that they are selfish. It’s because most people can’t seem to tell the difference between a pregnant belly and a big belly.Tokyo rail companies are providing pregnant women with badges (徽章). They hope other passengers on the Japanese capital’s crowded trains will readily offer their seats to them. The pregnant women are handing out the badges at stations. The pink and blue badges read, “There is a baby in my belly”. They will make it easier for pregnant women who are often left standing to go on train journeys.“Especially in the early stages it is difficult to tell from someone’s appearance whether they are pregnant,” said official at the Health Ministry, which came up with the idea. “But these early stages for the pregnant women are rather unstable and it is important to take care.”The move comes as Japan fights for ways to persuade women to have more babies. The low birth rate has left the nation with a falling population and the world’s highest proportion (比例) of elderly people. “We want to create an environment that is pleasant for pregnant women,” the official said. The move is welcomed by the majority of citizens. “When I was three months pregnant and got on the train, no one would really notice me and I couldn’t really ask them to give me a seat,”said Yoshiko Kato, a 38-year-old woman who is five months pregnant. “So these badges, I hope, will help some people to notice I am pregnant,” she said.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS.) 68.To make other passengers offer their seat to pregnant women, rail companies_________________________________________.69.The badges keep pregnant women from ________________________________________,which creates a pleasant environment for them.70.Why is Japan trying to persuade women to have more babies?__________________________________________________________________________ 71.How do the citizens respond to this new move?__________________________________________________________________________IV.
