Unit 3 On the moveReadingSelf-driving cars—destination known? Mr Zhang casually glances at the empty driver's seat and says, "Destination Grand Hotel. Family mode. Start." The car responds immediately, easing smoothly into the busy traffic and avoiding obstacles on the road. Inside the car, the family have chosen their entertainment from a pop-up display panel, ready for the journey ahead. This imagined scene provides a likely future reality for self-driving cars, also known as autonomous vehicles(A Vs).

However, before this evolution in transport becomes a revolution, it must be fully understood how self-driving cars work. Put simply, self-driving cars must "see" and "behave" appropriately to be safe on the road. They do this through various hardware and deep-learning AI. Cameras as well as sensors like radar and lidar capture a variety of data from the external environment. Once the data is sent to the AI system, the "brain" of the car, it is analysed and put together like a puzzle so that the self-driving car can "see" its surroundings and determine its position. Meanwhile, the Al system identifies patterns from the data and learns from them. An action plan is then created to instruct the car how to "behave" in real time: stay in the lane, move into another one, speed up or slow down. Next, the necessary mechanical controls, such as the accelerator and brakes, are activated by the AI system, allowing the car to move in line with the action plan.

The first one has been done for you.

Seldom do we doubt that a day is 24 hours long and that a year consists of 365 days (well, a little more actually, which is why we have leap years). These timings are based on the Earth's planetary motions. It takes the Earth a day to spin once on its axis and a year to make one complete circular movement around the Sun. However, would it surprise you to learn that scientists have found evidence that this has not always been the case?Under the oceans lies the hidden evidence for the changing lengths of days and years. Ancient corals, just like tree trunks, show distinct growth rings, and by counting these rings, it is possible for scientists to calculate the number of days in a year, many millions of years ago. Here is an example. By studying corals that were over 400 millions years old, scientists estimate that an earth year was 420 days long back then. Similarly, tidal records laid down in ancient river mouths also reveal different lengths of days and years in the past. Examining the daily, monthly and seasonal cycles of these tidal records lets scientists know the number of days in previous years. They indicate, for instance, that 620 million years ago the day was possibly 3 hours shorter than it is today.Based on all this evidence, not only do scientists conclude that the lengths of days and years have changed in past eras, they also predict that days will get longer in the future. So, one day, the expression 24/7 may well have to be replaced with the revised expression,25/7!

Unit1 Beware and take careReadingFighting the hidden enemy— a war we must winAn enemy appeared without warning, attacking its unsuspecting victims with efficiency. This silent and invisible enemy moved swiftly through communities and secretly crossed borders. The world soon learnt that the enemy we faced was Covid- 19.Covid-19 is caused by a new strain of coronavirus. Once entering the body, the virus multiplies inside the cell quickly and infects neighbouring cells. Common symptoms can include fever, tiredness, a dry cough, a headache, loss of taste or smell. However, in some cases, the virus causes the body’s own immune system to overreact, resulting in the body killing its own healthy cells. Consequently, the disease can become worse, causing damage to the body’s organs and tissues.Covid-19 is a highly infectious disease that can be transmitted easily and swiftly from person to person. This typically happens when people take in respiratory droplets and particles from an infected person. They can also catch Covid-19 by touching a surface or an object contaminated with the virus, and then touching their own mouth, nose or eyes. Research shows that there are certain settings that allow the virus to spread more easily. For instance, it favours cool, dry conditions and crowded indoor spaces with poor ventilation. What makes this disease even more dangerous is that infected people who show no symptoms may become unknowing carriers and spreaders of the virus. In early 2020, the threat posed by Covid-19 came to be fully recognized on a global scale. It spread rapidly across the world, affecting millions of people. More dangerously, new and even more infectious variants of the virus, such as the Delta and Omicron variants, gradually began to evolve in various parts of the world, presenting an increased threat to the health of the world’s population. To beat this silent enemy, the world pulled together. Governments joined forces with leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies so that vaccines could be produced, distributed and administered in record time. Doctors and nurses stepped forward to join the fight and went wherever they were needed, risking their own lives to tirelessly serve and care for patients. Community workers and volunteers worked round the clock to deliver food and medicines to residents. Ordinary people from all walks of life united in helping those affected by the pandemic. Simple acts of kindness and generosity were everywhere. In the darkest days when Covid-19 was doing its worst, the human spirit shone at its brightest. While the fight against Covid-19 is a global effort, there are preventive measures that everyone can take to help control the spread of the disease. Firstly, personal hygiene iskey. Clean your hands with soap and water thoroughly. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available, and avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes with unwashed hands. At home or at work, clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects. Secondly, when in public places, remember to wear a face mask, practise social distancing and avoid large crowds. Thirdly, receive a Covid-19 vaccine to help your body build up immunity against the virus. Finally, seek medical attention if you show any of the symptoms or have reason to believe that you have been exposed to the virus. By staying alert and following government advice and regulations, we not only protect ourselves, but also help protect our fellow citizens. Our fight against Covid-19 has shown us that we are now living in a human community with a shared future. Only by working together, while accepting our individual responsibilities, can we solve both national and global problems. We need to support each other so that we can march confidently, arm in arm, into a better and more secure future.Extended readingSay no to drugsGood morning, everyone. As a police officer who has spent many years working in the front line of the fight against drugs, I have witnessed, all too often, the destructive impact that drugs can have on individuals, families and the wider community. I have seen how drugs can destroy people’s physical and mental well-being and ruin young lives before they even begin. I have seen how families are torn apart after a family member has become addicted to drugs. I have also seen how tirelessly the forces of law and order work together in fighting against drugs. I will not exaggerate the scale of the problem, as the facts speak for themselves. According to the 2021 World Drug Report, it is estimated that around 275 million people used drugs worldwide and over 36 million people suffered from drug use disorders in the last year. These shocking figures indicate that drug abuse is a very serious global problem. Therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to say no to drugs.Drug abuse hurts an individual drug user both physically and mentally. The most serious health conditions associated with drug abuse include heart problems, respiratory problems, kidney failure, liver damage and a weakened immune system, increasing the risk of illness and infection. Moreover, drugs interfere with a person’s ability to make sensible decisions. Consequently, people under the influence of drugs are no longer in control of their own mind and likely to put themselves or others in great danger. They also suffer from memory loss and mood disorders like depression or anxiety.Apart from its harm to individuals, drug abuse also destroys families and impactssociety as a whole. Drug users sometimes lie and steal to fuel their habit, while ignoring the responsibilities they have to their families. This can lead to not only financial hardship but also the breakdown of once strong family relationships and the loss of stability within the family. The impact drug abuse has on society is also enormous. Under the influence of drugs, drug users may exhibit violent behaviour and sometimes even commit criminal acts, threatening public safety. They are willing to do anything to get their hands on drugs. Also, because drug users need a regular supply of drugs, the criminal underworld quickly develops, eating away at the fabric of society.Knowing the serious damage that can be caused through the use of drugs, you may be asking yourself: why would anybody be foolish enough to start taking drugs? There is no simple answer to this question, but there are well-identified risk factors for drug abuse. Some people experiment with drugs simply out of curiosity, some regard drug use as an escape from the stresses of everyday life, and others start to use drugs just because people around them are drug users.Fortunately, there are things you can do to protect yourself from drug use. First of all, drug education is of vital importance. You should learn more about drugs, especially new designer drugs, which are incredibly dangerous. The more you know about the terrible consequences of taking drugs, the more likely you are to stay away from them. Secondly, you need to choose where you go and who you spend time with very carefully. Make sure you surround yourself with friends who you can really count on and turn to for support. Last but not least, should you ever come under pressure to use drugs, you must immediately seek assistance from an adult who you look up to, such as a family member, a teacher or a doctor. In conclusion, I hope my message is clear—say no to any kind of drug. The most effective way to avoid all the problems caused by the use of drugs is not to use them in the first place.Unit 1sow the seeds of sth 成为… 的种子(2)*coronavirus /kəˈrəʊnəvaɪrəs/ n. 冠状病毒(2)*multiply /ˈmʌltɪplaɪ/ vi. & vt. 通风(2)*approximately /əˈprɒksɪmətli/ adv. 合作(3)*pharmaceutical/ˌfɑːməˈsuːtɪkl; ˌfɑːməˈsjuːtɪkl/ adj. 生物技术(3)in record time 以最快的速度(3)do one’s worst 进行最大破坏,使尽最坏的招数(3)precaution /prɪˈkɔːʃn/ n. 预防措施,预防,防备(3)*hygiene /ˈhaɪdʒiːn/ n. 卫生(3)*soap /səʊp/ n. 肥皂(3)*sanitizer /sænɪtaɪzə(r)/ n. (5)every cloud has a silver lining 黑暗中总有一线光明(5)*liver /ˈlɪvə(r)/ n. 肝(6)*irritate /ˈɪrɪteɪt/ vt.

Artemisinin has saved hundreds of thousands of lives, and has led to improved health for millions of people. Over 200 million people around the world get malaria each year, and about 600, 000 die from it. Artemisinin has become a vital part of the treatment for malaria, and is thought to save 100, 000 lives a year in Africa alone.

Tu Youyou, a committed and patient scientist, was born in Ningbo, China, on 30 December 1930, and graduated from Peking University Medical School in 1955. After she graduated, she worked at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing. In 1967, the Chinese government formed a team of scientists with the objective of discovering a new treatment for malaria, and Tu Youyou was among the first researchers chosen. In the beginning, Tu Youyou went to Hainan, where malaria was more common, to study malaria patients. In 1969, she became the head of the project in Beijing, and decided to review ancient Chinese medical texts to find traditional botanical treatments for the disease. Her team examined over 2, 000 old medical texts, and evaluated 280, 000 plants for their medical properties. From their research, they discovered and tested 380 distinct ancient Chinese medical treatments that showed promise in the fight against malaria.

Reading part1.I can’t wait to describe to you what senior high school life is like.1)can’t wait to do sth 迫不及待地去做某事can hardly wait to do sthJamie could hardly wait to get started.2)describe to you what senior high school life is like(=sth)①describe sth to sb=describe to sb sthsth是宾语Sth=what senior high schooll life is like (充当宾语的句子,宾语从句)What senior high school life is like 为什么要放在句尾?《汉英语对比纲要》潘文国汉语基本句具有句首开放性和句尾收缩性;(狮子型)(竹式结构)英语就则恰恰相反,具有句首封闭性和句尾开放性。

(孔雀型)(树式结构)梅花一朵梅花鬓边斜插一朵梅花红颜小姐鬓边斜插一朵梅花句尾长的其他例句(摘录自课本):It is important for you to make the most of our school resource.Of great importance are good study habits, useful skills and a positive attitude.课本解释:本句为倒装句,主语为good study habits, useful skills and a positive attitude,因主句较长,使用倒装句可以使句子更为平衡。

用英语句子的孔雀型结构继续解释)It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental needs too.②宾语从句<1>定义:做宾语的句子叫做宾语从句。

Unit 1 Our living planetThe ocean deep We look upwards and wonder what lies beyond our planet. We send probes into the vastness of space to explore the unknown. We build space stations to advance our understanding of the universe. Our curiosity about outer space has remained unshakeable. Meanwhile, it is estimated that more than eighty per cent of the world's oceans are unexplored. So, if we want to find exciting new life forms as well as undiscovered and unusual geological formations, the ocean is where we should also be looking· Then why don't we dive to the bottom of a really deep ocean and take a long, close look beneath the waves?

The first 200 metres of our dive takes us through what can be called the open ocean, where most visible light exists. Here lives much of the marine life we know about, such as dolphins, corals and seaweeds. Sinking below 200 mertes, we enter the twilight zone, where there is little sunlight and thus almost no plant life. Most of the fish living here are small filter feeders which swim up at night to feed in the nutrient-rich waters above .Also living in the twilight zone are hunters with telescopic, upward-pointing eyes that can easily spot a meal in the waters above. Consequently, the fish most likely to be eaten have evolved to have thin bodies so thar they arc less easily to be seen fr om below. However, once they are captured, the hunters’ backward-carving teeth prevent them from getting away. Evolution, it seems, helps both the hunter and the hunted in equal measure.

Once past 1,000 metres, we have reached the deep ocean, where there is no light and temperatures drop just above freezing. The pressures are huge and can be more than 100 times the pressure of the Earth’s atmosphere. It is then surprising that many creatures can live in this extreme environment. They cannot rely solely on their eyesight to survive and have evolved fascinating characteristics. Indeed, many organisms in the deep ocean are blind. In order to obtain food and avoid being caught, they have to depend on other senses such as smell and their ability to detect slight changes in water pressure. Also, some fish have both male and female organs to increase the chances of reproduction, as fish are so scarce at these depths that it can be difficult for them to find a mate. The fish in the deep ocean are among the strangestcreatures on the Earth, many of which have yet to be properly studied.

On reaching the ocean floor, we may see shrimps and other organisms around hydrothermal vents. These vents form in volcanically active areas, pouring mineral-rich fluids into the sea. Before the discovery of these creatures, it was thought that all life on the Earth obtained its energy from the sun. However, this discovery has revealed that life forms can obtain nutrients and energy from thermal sources. Knowing that life35 can exist in these extreme conditions has changed scientific opinion about the chances of there being life elsewhere in the universe. In addition to the vents and remarkable organisms, we cannot miss the Mariana Trench, located in the north-western part of the Pacific Ocean. Its deepest point, known as the Challenger Deep, is nearly 11 ,000 metres below sea level. You could place Mount Qomolangma in the Challenger Deep, and its top would still be more than 2,000 metres below the surface! While there is little life at such great depths, it is far from boring. Of the many strange geological formations to be found here are rock bridges which cross the Trench, some reaching a height of 2,500metres above the Challenger Deep.
