如果要拿奖学金去北美国家的大学的话，需要参加TOEFL和GRE的考试，如果要去英联邦国家的话，考取IELTS 就可以了，但是英联邦国家是把教育当成一个产业，因此拿到奖学金的机会是非常少的，因此我们的目标锁定在北美的考试上。
目前很多同学不清楚要出国留学需要考什么样的考试，这里简单的解释一下：TOEFL（Test of English as a foreign Language）是为申请到美国或加拿大等国家上大学或者研究生的非英语国家的学生提供的一种英语水平考试。
考试的内容分为阅读，听力，口语，作文四个方面，新的考试形势为网考。

分为移民类（G）和学术类（A），包括阅读，听力，写作和口语四个部分，移民类和学术类只在阅读和写作上有区别。

GRE（Graduate Record Examination）是北美的研究生入学考试，适用于除法律和商业外的各专业。
其成绩也是拿奖学金的重要参考。
GRE分为General和Subject两类，通常中国学生只需要参加General的考试。
通常大多数学校不要求考SUB，但如果你是跨专业或者是美国人竞争比较激烈的专业，例如计算机等专业，可以考虑考一下SUB。
新GRE考试为机考，包括Verbal，Quantitative和Analytical Writing三部分，考试费为175美金，成绩有效期5年。
GMAT（Graduate Management Admission Test）是商学院入学考试，英语国家的大部分商学院都需要申请者提供GMAT成绩。
包括Verbal,Quantitative和Analytical Writing三部分，考试形势为机考，考试费用为250美金，成绩有效期5年。
但是MBA往往是没有奖学金的，而且最好是有3－4年的工作经验再读是更具有效果的。
因此对于没有工作经验的在校学生并不是很适合。

内容包括阅读理解，逻辑推理和分析推理三个方面，另加作文考试，作文成绩不记入总分，但作文将随成绩单寄到所申请的学校。
LSAT考试在中国每年举办两次，考试费用112美金，成绩有效期5年。
另外我们还能见到的国外考试BEC和TOEIC考试是商务职业类考试。
SAT是美国高中生进入美国大学所必须参加的考试，，也是世界各国高中生申请进入美国名校学习是否能被录取以及能否得到奖学金的重要参考。
因此对于已经是大学生的同学来说，需要考的是TOEFL，GRE或者是IELTS。
而这几种考试的词汇要求如下：IELTS要求约6500词汇量，TOEFL要求约8500词汇量，GRE在改革之后要求约16500词汇量。
相比较之下，其难度比较也可以初见端倪。
为了顺利通过考试达到最终出国留学这个目标，大学的四年的基本规划分配如下：大一提升英语基础能力，需要从高中的2800词汇量迅速提升到四级要求的4500词汇，尽量在大一的寒假前后考完四级，虽然说现在四级证书和学位无关，但是对于一个快速提高英语能力所产生的压力还是一个比较不错的方式。
另外一个备选的方案是考IELTS而不是考四级考试，尽量在大一的暑假之前把IELTS考一下。
不仅仅是因为四级考试是中式英语思维的缘故，其实IELTS对英语能力提升的效果会好很多，因为其考试注重听说读写各方面的平衡性。
但是考试费用也要高出很多。
一次考试费就要用去人民币约1450元。
不过这种资金的压力也会变成你学习的动力。
很多同学多次四级不过的原因，有些也是因为四级考试费用比较低廉而导致的思想上的不重视而造成的。
大一先不要着急过多的参与到太多的社团活动里面，这会牵扯大量的精力，因为社团的新人总是干一些杂乱的事情。
参加一个最感兴趣的就可以了，稍微的锻炼一下社交和管理的能力。
大一的时候把英语基础能力提升起来之后，大二可以准备TOEFL考试了，因为TOEFL考试成绩有效期是2年，因此，大二的时候考TOEFL，如果成绩不理想还可以再考一次，如果是大四的上半学期提出申请的话，大四的下半学期拿到offer,毕业后马上出国，这是比较理想的情况。
