unit 10 You are supposed to shake hands

1.customs 风俗；习惯名词

This is an old custom among the natives.

He dropped by his friend’s house when he came back from work.

drop by 后加某人或某地表示拜访某人或某地

drop in on 后加人

drop in at 后加地点

Drop by when you are in town.

She dropped in on Mary when she did some shopping.

I often drop in at the library when I am free.

8.We’re the capital of clocks and watches, after all.

the capital of……。。。的首都

after all 毕竟；终归；到底

他毕竟是个小孩子。

9.If you are even 15 minutes late, your friend may get mad.

get mad 大动肝火；气愤

I got mad yesterday because of his lie.

be mad at/with= be angry with/at

10.So I make an effort to be on time when I meet my friends.

make an effort to do sth. 做出努力去做某事

He made an effort to get it.

11.If there are people in the meeting room, you are supposed to knock before entering.

knock on/ at the door 敲门

knock into 和。。。相撞

knock down 撞到

knock over 打翻

12.In many eastern countries, you are expected to take off your gloves before shaking hands.

take off 脱下反义词为put on

He hated the color of the coat so he took it off.

take off 还可以为(飞机)起飞

The plane will take off soon.

13.but it is worth the trouble if you want to understand another culture.

worth 后加名词，代词，数词或动词ing形式be worth doing sth. 值得去做某事

This picture is worth 100 yuan.

(1)get out of one’s way to do sth. 特地/格外努力的做某事

behave 表现；举止名词为behavior

imagine 想象后加名词，代词动名词或宾语从句

except 除…..之外
