There, they often met a homeless man named Matt Faris, who would frequently shout on the street corner, sometimes disturbing their sleep. Initially, Peterson had no interaction with Faris, but everything changed after reading the book Love Does, which stressed the power of love in action. Inspired by the book, Peterson decided to introduce himself to Faris. In their first conversation, Peterson learned that Faris had moved to Southern California from Kentucky in pursuit of a music career but had fallen on hard times, living on the streets for over a decade. Despite Faris’s rough appearance, Peterson saw beauty in him and felt forced to paint his portrait, even though he hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in eight years. Faris agreed, marking the start of a transformative project. So Peterson went to establish Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to painting portraits of unhoused individuals in the community. He captures each subject’s personality through colors and then sells the portraits, splitting the earnings with the subject. Half of the funds are placed in a “love account”, which helps them to address their personal needs. However, Peterson learned the importance of asking people directly how they wanted to use the money rather than assuming what they need most. For example, Faris used the funds from his portrait to record an album, while another subject, Kimberly Sondoval, used the money to help pay her daughter’s rent.Over the years, Peterson’s project expanded, leading him to found Faces of Mankind, where artists nationwide paint portraits of the homeless. To date, Peterson has personally painted 41 portraits. His work not only provides financial assistance but also fosters understanding and connection between the buyers and the subjects, with many buyers developing friendships with the individuals they initially overlooked. Peterson hopes his work will continue to change how people perceive the homeless.4.What inspired Brian Peterson to approach Matt Faris?A.He saw Faris had artistic talent.B.He read a book about love in action.C.He wanted to complain about Faris’s shouting.D.He intended to found a nonprofitorganization.5.How does Brian Peterson deal with the money he earns from selling the portraits?A.He donates it to charities.B.He uses it to expand his project.C.He sponsors the homeless to buy art supplies.D.He keeps half and gives the other half to his subjects.6.What is true about Peterson in Paragraph 3?A.He believes in giving without accepting.B.He prefers to decide how the money should be spent.C.He helps people based on their personal needs.D.He funds them to develop art-related projects.7.What would be the best title for this passage?A.Painting for Homeless B.Art Can Cure HomelessnessC.The Story of Matt Faris D.Selling Portraits for CharityScientists from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HIPS) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences have designed a wristwatch that can measure essential chemicals in body sweat. Theirfindings were published in the journal ACS Nano.Sweat contains electrolytes (电解质), primarily potassium, sodium and calcium. The balance of these essential minerals is crucial for supporting muscle function, nerve health and regular heartbeat. The wristwatch collects sweat from the skin and analyzes it in real time using a sensor chip with sensitive membrane. When sweat enters the device, it will come into contact with the membrane that contains three tubes capable of measuring sodium, potassium and calcium levels respectively.Although they are not the first to invent sweat sensors, the Chinese researchers emphasized the wrist watch’s solid interface for long-term reliability. “It surpasses the stability of many other sensors by consistently monitoring human sweat for over six months,” said the lead researcher Huang Xingjiu.Since athletes use electrolyte drinks to counteract (抵制) the loss of energy and refill it, researchers in the study measured the sweat composition of these chemicals in athletes running long distances. The accuracy reached about 95 percent when compared to the standard detection method.“When there are electrolyte abnormalities, the device will remind users to supplement (补充) them quickly. The aim of developing this device is to provide warnings for electrolyte loss and reduce exercise-related injury risks.”For ordinary people, the traditional electrolyte test requires samples of body fluids taken in hospitals. The new wristwatch has the potential to serve as an alternative to needles for measuring electrolytes. The next goal of the research team is to design various sensitive membrane materials for monitoring more information. The researchers noted that compared to popular fitness watches on the market, the device they designed is larger and heavier, making it less comfortable to wear. However, they expect to develop wearable sweat sensors suitable for market applications in the next five years. The team of researchers also aims to adapt the device for environmental monitoring.8.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A.The working principle of the device.B.The composition of sweat.C.The function of a particular sensor.D.The balance of the minerals.9.Which of the following is the advantage of the wristwatch?A.accurate and popular.B.large and wearable.C.convenient and comfortable.D.reliable and stable.10.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?A.The wristwatch has no equal now.B.The product hasn’t hit the market yet.C.The researchers are content with the product.D.The device will be definitely put into extensive use.11.What is the purpose of the passage?A.To provide warnings for readers to reduce risks.B.To introduce a new product on monitoring health.C.To inform the readers of the importance of eletrolytes.D.To analyze the relationship between sweat and health.Victories are temporary in China’s fast-changing economy. Earlier this month Colin Huang, the founder of Pinduoduo, became China’s richest man. The company, founded in 2015, today is China’s third-largest e-commerce firm by sales, behind only JD.com and Alibaba.Mr Huang’s time atop China’s rich list was, however, brief. On August 26th Pinduoduo’s share price decreased by nearly 30% after it reported sales for the quarter from April to June fell short of the market’s high expectations and gave warning that a long-run decline in profitability was “unavoidable”.Pinduoduo’s misfortunes are set against a backdrop of weakening consumer spending in China. In June sales from the “618” shopping festival fell for the first time, despite a number of platforms extending their sales periods this year. A fierce price war is adding to the trouble. Visit any Chinese e-commerce site and you will be impressed by signs advertising huge discounts and promising the cheapest deals online. Competition has grown more intense because of attacks into e-commerce by short-video apps such as Douyin and Xiaohongshu. Some merchants are piling yet more pressure on the industry. Some Chinese e-commerce companies juice their sales by fining merchants for late deliveries or product mismatches. Last month hundreds of suppliers surrounded the offices of Temu, Pinduoduo’s foreign branch, in the southern city of Guangzhou to protest against such punishment.Pinduoduo may be hoping that international expansion will rescue it from deteriorating conditions at home. That will not be straightforward. Although the number of people using Temu, which launched in America in 2022, has rocketed, owing in no small part to the vast amounts it has spent on advertising, turning that into profit has proved trickier. What is more, America’s e-commerce Amazon is fighting back against the Chinese upstart. During its Prime Day sale in July it offered discounts of up to 70% on some products. It is also reportedly planning to launch a discount section on its site which will feature cheap items. 12.Why did Pinduoduo’s share price decrease sharply?A.China is experiencing a major economic boom.B.Colin Huang failed to run the company well.C.Sales for the second quarter didn’t meet the expectations.D.Consumers were unwilling to spend money on the platform.13.What difficulty is Pinduoduo faced with?A.The rapid rise of JD.com and Alibaba.B.The pressure from consumers and suppliers.C.The invasion of many overseas e-commerce giants.D.The intense price competition and weak purchasing power.14.What does the underlined word “deteriorating” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Declining.B.Alarming.C.Increasing.D.Changing. 15.How does the author find Pinduoduo’s expansion of international market?A.Hopeful.B.Cautious.C.Unclear.D.Favourable.People are constantly bombarded (轰炸) with unrealistic and potentially harmful images of “ideal” body types. 16 It’s also important to learn what your body can physically do and become comfortable. In order to accept your body, it’s important to get in touch with both of these aspects of your body on their own terms.17 This means not trying to change who you are or focus on qualities you don’t like. Learn to enjoy your body —— how you move, feel, and get around. Let go of how you used to look, especially if your body has undergone changes from injuries, or medical conditions. Be kind to your body as it is right now.Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. As soon as you notice yourself starting to have a negative thought, replace it with something positive about yourself. Give yourself time to get into the habit of thinking positively. Try starting each day by thinking a few positive thoughts.18Compare yourself only to yourself. 19 There’s no point in comparing yourself to others, regardless of whether the person is a celebrity or classmate sitting next to you. Instead, compare yourself in terms of how you’ ve progressed over time, now that you’ve created your own realistic goals. For example, you might think to yourself that you’ve improved your appearance compared to a few years ago.Know when to seek help. Understand that nearly everyone struggles to maintain positive body image all the time and it’s normal to have ups and downs. 20 There are various signs that your body issues are severe and require professional help.A.Accept your body as it is.B.Identify what you like about your body and appearance.C.Negative thoughts do nothing to improve your self-image.D.The world would be a pretty boring place if we all looked the same.E.But you should also honestly consider if you need to speak with a counselor, or specialist. F.This can make it difficult to accept, love, and feel confident in your own body, which is critical. G.Remind yourself of these thoughts throughout the day when you start feeling critical of yourself.二、完形填空Ever since I was little, the doctors told my parents that someday I would need hearing aids. It’s believed that social robots could become as common as paper and whiteboards in schools. Those robots have been used to read stories to preschool students in Singapore, help 12-year-olds in Iran learn English and improve handwriting among young children in Switzerland. As a professor of education, I study the different ways that teachers worldwide do their jobs. To understand how social robots could affect teaching, I introduced a robot called “Pepper” into a public elementary and middle school in the U. S. and found many problems with the current generation of social robots. To get the robot to perform, our students had to master the directions that came with the robot. Some students quickly figured out that the robot could respond only to certain basic routines. They kept trying to interact with the robot as if it were a person but got very frustrated with its nonhuman responses. When a robot failed to answer a question, or responded in the wrong way, students realized the robot wasn’t really understanding them and that the robot’s dialogue was preprogrammed. Also, I have found that these are not limited to school settings. Service robots in some health care facilities have been programmed to deliver medicine, but this requires special sensors and programming. Stores and restaurants are experimenting with delivery and cleaning robots. But when a grocery store in Scotland tried to use “Pepper” for customer interactions, the robot was fired after a week. While the social robots currently used in schools are limited in functions, they can still provide useful learning experiences. Students can use them to learn more about robotics and artificial intelligence. Struggling with a robot’s limitations gives students real insights into thecomplicated nature of human social interaction. The opportunity to do hands-on work with a social robot shows students how difficult it is to program robots to copy human behavior. As AI becomes a bigger part of our work and lives, we need to teach students to think critically about what it means to live and work with social machines.4.What phenomenon is described at the beginning of the text?A.The global differences in educational approachesB.The transformative impact of robots on education.C.The adoption of social robots in classrooms worldwide.D.The innovative achievements in science and technology.5.How do students find their interaction with social robots?A.Amusing and engagıng.B.Challenging but beneficial.C.Ineffective and disappointing.D.Satisfying but time-consuming.6.What does the author want to show by mentioning the examples in paragraph 4?A.Robotics still has room for improvement.B.Technology has changed the way we workC.Many fields are open to experimenting with robots.D.Robots might pose a threat to people’s employment.7.What can students learn by interacting with limited-function social robots in schools?A.To master communication skills.B.To get some hands-on experience.C.To strengthen the sense of mission.D.To improve critical thinking ability. For many of us, online shopping has made the process of purchasing goods a far simpler and more convenient process. No longer do we have to head to shops to browse through various objects, wandering round endless shelves, before finally setting for the first thing we saw. These days, we find the item we want or need online, click on it, and check out its description and, most importantly, its user reviews. If it fits the bill, we send it to our basket and pay. There seems to be a wealth of options at our fingertips. But how do we know the options that pop up in front of us really are the best deals, and how might algorithms (算法) help or hold us back?Algorithms, simply put, are mathematical instructions which tell a computer how to solveproblems. When shopping is involved, what is the problem they solve? Well, they instruct a computer which advertisements to show and which products a user is most likely to buy. By analyzing the things we bought or looked at previously algorithms can predict what goods we’re most likely to be attracted by.For some people, the idea of something guessing your preferences could sound a bit worrying. But first, let’s look at the positives. By telling a computer to show us what we are interested in, it can not only save us a lot of time, but also help us find the best deals. However, there are some people who have concerns about the impact of algorithms on our shopping experience. It is possible that algorithms may only select options from a limited number of brands, or may favour products from certain companies. There are also concerns that we aren’t always shown the cheapest or best deal, even though that’s what we’re searching for.So, the takeaway from this is that algorithms are here to stay, and it’s wise to know they exist. Whenever you are shopping, be it online or off, make sure you shop around for the best deals. The first thing you see might not always be the best for you.8.What is the main factor that leads you to buy the product online immediately?A.The reasonable price.B.Salesgirls’ description.C.Customers’ comments.D.The convenient delivery.9.How do algorithms help customers find their favourite goods?A.The previous consuming records.B.The most advertisements they see.C.The frequency of visiting the store.D.The amount of money they spend. 10.What does the author think of algorithms used for online shopping?A.Doubtful.B.Beneficial.C.Negative.D.Worrying. 11.Which message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?A.Many hands make light work.B.Actions speak louder than words.C.Only the feet tell if the shoes fit.D.Only comparing can see the gap.At a park in one of the world’s most polluted cities, a filtration (过滤) “tower” has been quietly cleaning the surrounding air since last summer. Called Verto, the device filters 600,000 cubic meters of air a day in New Delhi’s Sunder Nursery.Filtration towers were designed by architecture firm Studio Symbiosis. The firm’sco-founders, Amit Gupta and Britta Knobel Gupta, say their fan-powered devices can clean the air within a radius (半径) of 200 to 500 meters in some spaces, depending on wind speed and how open the surroundings are. “I think the towers can also be installed in public parks and squares, where people spend quality outdoor time,” Britta said, adding that installing (安装) the towers in spots where homeless people sleep might also be very beneficial. In 2019 alone, air pollution is thought to have caused nearly 1.6 million deaths in India, according to a study in medical journal The Lancet. New Delhi is regularly covered with smog, with vehicle emissions, crop-burning, and coal-fired power plants all contributing to the city’s bad air quality. In addition to the direct impact of pollution, the resulting climate change has caused heat waves that have killed more than 24,000 people in the country since 1992, according to a study published by the University of Cambridge.Amit estimated that maybe 100 of the towers would be required to filter the air across central New Delhi, though further research and a “full-scale model” would be required to calculate more figures. The devices are also designed to be easily transported, with the hope that they can be adopted on a larger scale. The filters, which need to be changed every three to nine months, are partly recyclable. Noise generated by the towers is, at a maximum of 75 decibels, similar to that of a standard kitchen exhaust fan (排风扇). But it can also be confusing if you’re not sure where to start. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your art appreciation journey. One of the most important things to remember when looking at art is to approach it with an open mind. 16 Instead, allow yourself to experience the art work on its own terms and see what emotions or thoughts it awakens in you. When you first encounter a piece of art, take a few moments to look at it. Notice the colors, lines, shapes, and materials. 17 If you’re looking at a painting, try to identify the brushwork and how it contributes to the artistic effect of the piece.18 Thinking about the situation in which a piece was created can help you better understand and appreciate the work. For example, if you’re looking at a piece of art from the 19th century, it can be helpful to learn about the artistic movements and social issues that were common at the time. The medium in which a piece of art is created can have a significant impact on the final product. 19 Understanding the properties and limitations of different mediums can help you appreciate the technical skills and choices of the artist. If you’re looking at art in a museum or gallery, there may be a staff member available to answer your questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for more information. If you’re looking at art online or in a book, try to find out more about the work through research. 20A.Many works of art convey a deeper meaning.B.You can also turn to a professional about the subject.C.Try not to assume what the artist was trying to express.D.The key to appreciating art is to approach it with curiosity.E.Observe how the various elements of the artwork are arranged.F.Art is often created within a specific historical, or cultural context.G.A sculpture made of metal has a different feel from an oil painting.二、完形填空The town of North Rustico is a homey sort of place. Videoing the regular exhibition to share with friends.BThey talk about the straw that broke the camel’s back, but really it should be the password that wiped out my memory bank.I was going along fine with instant recall of my bank PIN (密码),my mobile phone number and the date of my cousin's birthday before I downloaded a gas station payment app for its new customer discount. It asked me to create a password. When I typed in “gas 1”, it was rejected for not being complex enough. I tried again: “IHateHearlessOilCompanies@”. But that was too long and didn’t include “at least one number”. But here is the thing: as soon as I added the fresh password into my memory, I instantly forgot all the others. My brain had hit its limit for passwords. I now know nothing.I had entered some passwords in a notebook. Of course, I didn't write down the actual passwords, in case it fell into the wrong hands. Instead, I masked them in a way that only a family member could figure them out. For example, I combined my bank PIN with our postal code, then added it to a list of phone numbers. It would fool even Albert Einstein.Maybe we need a system like the one we use to remember people’s names. You know, you form an association between a person's characteristics and their name by whispering “Skinny George, Skinny George” in heart after meeting them. The risk is that, upon seeing him, you’ll burst out the phrase. “Skinny George” might not mind, but it's possible “Boring Betty” will. As for remembering passwords as you change them, you could simply use the first and last letters of your favorite singer's greatest hits, together with the year of their release.Maybe I’ll try that one out--but only after describing the system in the notebook. Then I'll hide it in a place so secret that I’ll never remember where it is.4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphsA. He fell for a marketing trick.B. He was driven mad by passwords.C. He had a serious memory disorder.D. He was rejected by the gas station.5. By mentioning Albert Einstein in paragraph 3, the author intends to ______.A. show how secure his passwords wereB. challenge the intelligence of scientistsC. prove the uselessness of his passwordsD. promote a more scientific password system6. What is the author’s purpose in writing the textA. To encourage readers to use password notebooks.B. To recommend a password-remembering method.C. To complain about the trouble caused by passwords.D. To point out the importance of using complex passwords.7. What is the tone of the textA. Inspiring.B. Indifferent.C. Humorous.D. Serious.CNo one likes interruption. We are born to seek balance and order. No matter what it is that you are doing, being interrupted involves a forceful stop midway and then having to re-enter your previous state, sometimes with great difficulty.Popular belief has it that interruption breaks the flow of your thinking and affects productivity negatively, and so it is advisable that you have an uninterrupted session of intensive work before your next break. However, a Russian psychologist, Bluma Zeigarnik, might tell you otherwise. The connection between interruption and memory came to her attention when she was dining in a restaurant. She noticed how the waitresses had an amazing memory of the detailed orders yet to be paid for, but scarce memory of the orders that were already completed.Back in her laboratory, she conducted studies in which subjects were required to complete various puzzles. Some of the subjects were interrupted during the tasks. All the subjects were then asked to describe what tasks they had done. It turns out that adults remembered the interrupted tasks 90% better than the completed tasks, and that children were even more likely to recall the uncompleted tasks. In other words, uncompleted tasks will stay on your mind until you finish them!In comparison to tasks that were already finished and ones that we haven’t even started, half-done projects are given the priority in themental to-do list our brains sketch out for us. Zeigarnik described this finding in her doctoral thesis (论文) in the late 1920s, which was later called Zeigarnik effect. One possible explanation is that with interrupted tasks, we are desperate for their closure to reclaim a sense of balance. Finishing them also means that we can finally clear up the mental backlog (积压的工作) and give the space to more upcoming tasks.Zeigarnik’s effect can be found everywhere, especially used in media and advertising. Have you ever wondered why cliffhangers work so well or why you just can’t get yourself to stop watching that series on Netflix Ernest Hemingway once said about writing a novel, “It is the wait until the next day that is hard to get through.” So next time, when you are interrupted, appreciate it and take advantage of it to promote your productivity. What is a common practice to finish a taskA. Working in a focused period.B. Working with occasional breaks.C. Working with a stop midway.D. Working in an interrupted session. What is the finding of the Zeigarnik’s experimentA. Interruption recalls details.B. Interruption betters memory.C. Interruption disturbs balance.D. Interruption reduces productivity.10. Which of the following is an example of the application of Zeigarnik’s effectA. Fashion shows.B. Online news.C. Talk shows.D. TV series.11.What is the possible reason behind Zeigarnik’s effectA. The desire for balance.B. The physical backlog.C. The outside pressure.D. The upcoming tasks.DMosquitoes carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering to make the annoying insects into partners in the fight against the disease. For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. “But that approach is temporary,” says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, “Because mosquitoes are extremely tough little insects, and their populations can quickly rebound.”Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting warriors, which is a complete departure from traditional ways of controlling malaria. To understand how it works, it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grows inside humans. It’s passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. “If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease,” he says. But makingmosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a tough job.To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes. It turned out the malaria-fighting antibodies which gene-edited mosquitoes produced worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host. James’ team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be conducted on an island or in another isolated location. But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. “There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that naturally occurring methods for reducing malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. “Why take unnecessary risks and release a species that can’t be recalled once it’s released into the wild ” she asks. What can we know from the second and third paragraphsMosquitoes reproduce quickly.Mosquitoes depart from malaria.Mosquitoes are malaria-fighting warriors.Mosquitoes’ populations are under control.According to the text, which of the following are attractive to the malaria pathogenMice. B. Parasites. C. Mosquitoes. D. Gene-edited mosquitoes. What is environmentalists’ attitude toward this new approach Tolerant. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Disapproving. What is the best title for the textLimiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito PopulationsControlling Malaria by editing Mosquitoes’ genesCuring Malaria with Gene-edited MosquitoesPreventing Malaria with a new vaccineII 七选五(每小题2.5分,共12.5分)Does your cat or dog suddenly get a burst of energy and perform athletic features around the house Welcome to the world of zoomies—intense periods of high-energy activity including running, jumping and rolling. You might see post-bath zoomies, midnight zoomies and out of-nowhere zoomies. They have a lot in common with play. 16 If the zoomies are occurring as part of your animal’s regular play routine, this implies your animal is enjoying themselves. We don't yet know if zoomies are more likely to occur at certain times of the day, or more in some than others. 17Zoomies are mentioned a lot, but there is also little scientific research onwhat causes them, or how often they occur. Yet some conclusions can be drawn from experience. 18 In dogs, this is commonly a play bow- where the dog appears to “bow” to another to signal it is eager to play. In cats, an invitation may include repeatedly rolling over. If this is the case, your animal is likely experiencing excitement and a desire to interact with you.19 Context is key. You should consult with your vet (兽医) if your dog or cat is displaying the behaviour (in particular, circling) for too long. It might be a sign of a repetitive behaviour disorder. If you struggle to distract or stop the behaviour, or if it is resulting in injuries, seek professional assistance.Even if you don't get the call of the zoomies yourself, take a moment to enjoy and even join your dog or cat in having fun. 20A. Sometimes we all need to run wild.B. This makes zoomies a whole load of fun.C. It is our duty to figure out what they want exactly.D. Nothing is more annoying than a midnight zoomie.E. However, we do consider them evidence of a pretty good mood.F. Sometimes, however, zoomies may be a sign of a medical condition.G. In dogs and cat, zoomies can include an invitation for others to join.III 完形填空(每小题1分,共15分)Rebecka Peterson, a high school math teacher, is the nation’s 2023Teacher of the Year. 江苏省徐州市2023-2024学年高二上学期期中考试英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读理解If you’re feeling in the mood for grilled food but don’t have a barbecue, then deciding what product to purchase can be a bit difficult. So to help you get a better understanding of just some of the choices available, here’s our guide to buying a new BBQ.Charcoal vs GasThe first decision is how your BBQ is going to be powered. There are essentially two main choices: the traditional way with charcoal, or the quick and convenient way with gas. For those who get frustrated with the process of lighting coals and waiting for them to reach the desired temperature, then gas is the easy option. It’s clean and gets up to temperature in an instant. But for many, the main fun of a barbecue lies in the back-to-basics cooking that hot coal brings natural barbecue fire. You’ll also find a far greater range of charcoal barbecues. SizeFor anyone who likes to throw a garden party with a busy barbecue at the centre of the action, there are some vast grills (烤架) available. But unless you’re regularly feeding the masses, then these BBQ beasts can be impractical. Smaller meals are better suited to smaller equipment, so be realistic about the size that best suits you.Open grill or lidWhile facing the barbecue selection of your nearest retailer, you’ll notice that some of them have lids. These will usually be round and will make you pay more than the lidless options. But if you want the benefit of being able to cook larger items over a longer period of time, such as a whole chicken, then a lid will be essential.1.Which BBQ is suitable for Jack, who likes back-to-basics cooking and often invites friends to the garden party?A.Gas barbecue in small size.B.Gas barbecue in big size.C.Charcoal barbecue with big grills.D.Charcoal barbecue with small grills. 2.What is the difference between the open grill and the one with a lid?A.The open grill costs more.B.The open grill looks superior.C.The open grill is more reliable.D.The open grill is less suitable for larger items.3.Which column of the magazine is the passage most likely selected from?A.Lifestyle.B.Business.C.Culture.D.Sports.In recent years, wooden buildings have reached new heights, with soaring(高耸的)wooden skyscrapers completed or underway in countries like Norway, Switzerland and AustraliA.Sweden, likewise, has come up with a plan—building the world’s biggest wooden city. As the world’s largest urban construction project in wood, Stockholm Wood City will be built in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm in 2025.“By using wood, the project is expected to reduce carbon footprint by up to 40%,compared with building in concrete and steel,” says Annica Anäs, CEO of Atrium Ljungberg, a Swedish urban development company. Some people may have concerns over fire risks posed by wooden buildings, but experts say engineered timber(木材)can resist fire as well. As with other modern construction projects using wood, Wood City will still use some concrete and steel in places like the foundations, but the overall amounts will be greatly reduced.“The construction will not be as noisy as it is built from concrete and bricks,” adds Ms Anäs. This makes wooden buildings particularly suitable for urban redevelopment in general, since putting them up is less likely to annoy the neighbours. It should also be profitable. Ms Anäs is looking for a return on investment of 20% or better. The world’s largest wooden city is supposed to make commute (通勤) easier and shorter, decreasing emissions from transportation. The website for the project describes Stockholm Wood City as a “five minute city”. As Anäs concluded, “We want to create an environment where our customers, who will live and work here, can participate in the development and design of the city district of the future. ”4.The project mentioned in the passage is about__________.A.making a modern city B.creating wooden skyscrapersC.building the highest wooden building D.constructing the largest wooden city 5.What advantage do wooden buildings have over concrete and steel buildings?A.Resisting fires.B.Lasting long.C.Being environmentally friendly.D.Being comfortable.6.Wooden buildings are suitable for urban redevelopment mainly because__________.A.they are profitable for investors B.they cause less noise when builtC.they have a short construction period D.they are less costly to maintain and repair 7.What is Anäs’ attitude to the future of wood construction?A.Optimistic.B.Critical.C.Concerned.D.doubtful.Since 2001, robotic tools have caused great changes in the practice of surgery. They have greatly reduced the stress and physical demands normally placed on surgeons and have made certain procedures possible. One example is “keyhole surgery”, or minimally invasive (微创) surgery, which normally requires surgeons to stand at awkward angles and make difficult movements with their hands to make a cut inside the patient. But in June 2022, surgeon James Ansell used 3D glasses and two joysticks(操纵杆) to control four robotic arms to perform a procedure to remove a cancerous tumor (肿瘤). “My colleague said… that this feels like cheating,” Ansell said to The Guardian.Another area of surgery that has had major technological breakthroughs in recent years is telesurgery. Telesurgery, or remote surgery, is the use of technology that allows a surgeon to perform a procedure on a patient not in the same physical location.Normally, telesurgery relies on a wired connection due to concerns of harming the patient if a wireless connection should drop during surgery, but China made several advancements in wireless telesurgery based on 5G technology.China achieved the first 5G-based remote operation in March 2019 involving a brain surgery procedure between a surgeon in Sanya and a patient in Beijing, a distance totaling nearly 3,000 kilometers, reported CGTN. More recently, a team of surgeons at the Hainan Eye Hospital successfully completed remote micron–level eye surgery via a 5G robot on rabbits located at the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, reported China Daily. Some people even believe that robotic systems, combined with AI, could one day surpass(超过)human surgeons. But given current technological limitations and the high costs of these robots, the complete robot takeover of surgery may still be a while off.8.The underlined part in paragraph 2 indicates the procedure may___________.A.be illegal B.be difficult to controlC.cheat the patient D.be conducted unknowingly9.What significant achievement did China make in the field of telesurgery?A.Removing a cancerous tumor using 3D glasses.B.Achieving remote surgery using a wired connection.C.Doing the first 5G-based eye remote operation on humans.D.Performing the first wireless brain surgery with 5G technology.10.What can we infer about robots in the medical field according to the passage?A.They still need further development.B.They have been widely adopted.C.They are currently in high demand.D.They have surpassed human surgeons. 11.What is the article mainly about?A.The benefits of robotic surgery.B.The future of robotic surgery.C.The advancements in medical robotics.D.The achievements of China’s medicine.I’m a recovering addict. I was addicted to YouTube. My addiction started several years ago. My first experience was on the recommendation of a friend to check out Susan Boyle’s amazing singing on Britain’s Got Talent. I didn’t think much about it and got on with my life. But soon I found myself spending a lot of time staring at the screen and discovered onscreen offerings were truly endless. From one YouTuber I learned how to plant my own vegetable garden. Someone else gave wise sayings from philosophers. Down the rabbit hole I went, for hours and hours, watching other people living their lives and giving me advice on how to live mine.As the months rolled by, checking in every day with people who were talking to me personally (or so it seemed) became an addiction. I subscribed to (订阅) many channels and waited anxiously for new weekly offerings. I found all this calming and therapeutic. At some point, though, I got annoyed by these artistic and seemingly perfect lives. Who are filming them? Do they happen to live in a meadow (草地)? The questions started to disturb me while forcing comparisons with my own somewhat more ordinary existence.Regardless of my growing anxiety, I continued to click on the YouTube icon on my phone whenever I had a spare five minutes. I compared my life constantly with the images onscreen. I started to hate the endless rules presented for good health, financial stability and mental contentment. In a moment of clarity (清晰), I realized that I had a full and happy life myself, which suited me perfectly although it wouldn’t win awards for perfection onscreen. The idea is to create an alternative to agriculturally raised meat. And unlike other meat substitutes which are made from plant proteins and other ingredients, lab-grown meat is real meat. 17Recently, the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has given two companies approval to sell lab–grown chicken. 18 It’s aimed at eliminating (消除) harm to animals, and reducing the environmental impacts of grazing(放牧) and growing feed for animals.“Everything we know about how meat can be made is going to change. But don’t expect to see cultivated meat in grocery stores just yet,” said Uma Vaieti, CEO of UPSIDE Foods.19 That’s because it cannot yet be produced on the scale of traditional meat.“To make cultivated meat, we need much more energy,” said Bruce Friedrich, presidentand founder of the Good Food Institute. After the interruption of the pandemic,Stutzman won his first individual World Para Archery title in February last year, scoring a perfect30in his final round. This is Stutzman’s Jordan moment:he has made change happen. But an increase in armless archers speaks not just to the40-year-old’s power as a role model, but to the growth of para sport more broadly. So when it comes to Paris next year,Stutzman is clear as to what he would like to see happen.“Winning is OK,”he says,“but you know how good it would be to have one,two and three all armless archers. We’re trying to grow the sport, trying to grow the Paralympics as a whole.”4.What does paragraph2mainly talk about?A.The perception of the archery competition.B.The accomplishments Stutzman has achieved.C.The unique method applied by Stutzman as an archer.D.The interaction with Michael Jordan as a world champion.5.How does Stutzman feel when he recalls his experience in an archery store?A.Bitter.B.Amused.C.Excited.D.Embarrassed. 6.Which of the following statements may Stutzman agree with?A.He is overjoyed with his being a role model.B.There is no more happier thing than winning a game.C.It is the growth of para sport that makes him satisfied.D.Michael Jordan has made change happen to para sport.7.Which of the following best describe Stutzman as a world champion archer?A.Optimistic and cautious.B.Ambitious and creative.C.Committed and humorous.D.Warm-hearted and conservative. It was a quiet morning in the library, and we librarians were enjoying a rather loud chat. Suddenly,a patron(常客)marched up to us,gave us an annoyed“Shush!”and went back to her seat. How strange for a group of librarians to be shushed by a patron!Shouldn’t it be the other way around?Well,it’s complicated. If you’re like me,a middle-aged woman, you probably remember libraries as places of silent reading. These days, however, libraries are more like active community centers. In the past, most libraries didn’t focus much on programs for kids whose age made it impossible for them to be quiet on demand. But growing knowledge about the importance of kids and teens learning through hands-on experiences has since caused a sea change in howlibraries connect with young readers. Now libraries begin offering interactive programs for kids, including crafts, board games, and story times. These types of programs certainly aren’t designed to be silent.Along with more programs for ever-younger children, technology today has played a part in the transformation of libraries into places where both kids and adults can use computers, make something on a3D printer and more.In addition, many libraries now offer programs for adults, who can participate in in book discussion, learn calligraphy, and even take college classes.Of course, libraries still need peaceful phones. These days, many libraries have glassed-off study rooms or quiet areas. They are also less noisy in the early afternoons, after morning children’s programs and before the after-school kid crowd arrive. It’s clear to me now that on the day my colleagues and I were shushed by a patron,we should have been using our“library voices”as we talked.Still,it’s unlikely that libraries will ever return to the days when they were places of silence. There’s just too much fun and learning happening.8.How did the author respond to the patron’s behavior?A.She approved of it.B.She was disappointed at it.C.She hesitated about it.D.She was astonished at it.9.What is paragraph3mainly about?A.The past and the present of libraries.B.The reason for the change of libraries.C.The activities for young children in libraries.D.The connection between libraries and readers.10.What can we learn about today’s libraries?A.They heavily depend on technology.B.They offer online programs for adults.C.They still provide silent reading places.D.They care much about time arrangement. 11.What would be the best title for the text?A.Libraries Should be Loud B.Reading Can be Fun in LibrariesC.Libraries Make Learning Happen D.Library Programs Target ChildrenHave you ever forgotten items when trying to recall a shopping list?Or dialed the wrong phone number when attempting to memorise one?The brain mechanisms(机制)that cause us to draw a blank in such situations have now been identified. Our working memory keeps small pieces of information that are readily accessible for planning, understanding and solving problems. But it will have“swap errors”.For example,if we are shown a red square and n blue circle, and are then asked what colour the circle was, we might say red,To understand why we make such errors,Jeff Johnston at Columbia University and his colleagues recorded the brain activity of two monkeys because a monkey’s working memory is very similar to humans. The monkeys were shown two differently coloured squares, one above the other, for half a second. After a short delay,a black spot appeared in the same location as one of the squares, and then disappeared. The animals were trained to tell the colour of the square they were supposed to be remembering based on the spot’s location,by staring at the matching colour on a rotatable(可旋转的)wheel. When doing this for about3hours over multiple sessions, the monkeys performed the task correctly between60and82percent of the time, but occasionally made swap errors. The research suggests that the brain responses linked to swap errors emerged before the animals decided which colour to report. They appeared to arise during“selection”when certain items stored in working memory are enhanced at the expense of others, rather than occurring as a result of them forgetting or a failure to correctly encode(编码)items in their working memory.“Everyone assumed there were simpler explanations like failure to encode or forgetting, but this very cool study shows that working memory errors come from a previously unknown source,”says Earl Miller at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The team is planning further experiments to gain a better understanding of mechanisms underlying swap errors. 12.What is the function of working memory?A.To identify the errors in understanding.B.To reduce the occurrence of mindblanking.C.To develop the way of distinguishing colours.D.To store information at the ready for mental use.13.What were the monkeys tasked with in the research?A.Correcting their errors over multiple sessions.B.Playing a matching game on a rotatable wheel.C.Reporting the colour of the square to memorize.D.Figuring out the exact positionelse changes as a result.A.Self-esteem is not always rooted in reality,though.B.You have the power to shape a new self-perception.C.This encourages you to speak openly without worry.D.The real test of character is whether they can learn from their mistakes.E.Self-esteem refers to a person's overall sense of his or her value or worth.F.People with a healthy level of self-esteem present themselves with a casual confidence.G.With some practice and persistence, you will win this internal struggle to see your self-worth.三、语法填空四、书信写作46.假定你是李华,在外刊阅读中遇到了困难,尝试一些方法后仍未达到预期效果。

As a child, I once invited a girl to my birthday party just because I had seen her in a beautiful dress. My love for fashion has continued into adulthood. However, I am also aware of the significant issues in the fashion industry: it’s highly polluting. There’s also the problem of waste, with the West often dumping (丢弃) unwanted clothing in other regions. So, when the invitation appeared, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to reset my relationship with clothes. The year pushed me to embrace better habits. I've always enjoyed looking for second-hand items, but when my only pair of trainers broke in an unfixable way, I urgently needed a replacement. The Vinted app helped me find one almost as quickly as buying new.I put more effort into making clothes. You quickly realize the labor involved once you start making shorts by yourself. Besides, removing the ease of buying new pushed me towards fixing instead, though a low point was taking a much-loved pair of shoes to a cobbler (修鞋匠), only to be told it’d be “cheaper to buy new”.Even though the year is officially over, I’m hoping to carry on with what I’ve learned. I’m trying to consume less overall, with a one in, one out’ rule with clothes. I’ve been noting down what clothes I wear each day, and whether I get 30 wears out of it (said to be the amount of times necessary to balance out the carbon emissions (排放) created to make a piece of clothing). These approaches are what work for me. But there are loads of different ways to do a fashion challenge. How useful, challenging, or appealing an approach sounds will vary from individual to individual. Whatever you do, roping in friends is recommended. They keep youmotivated; they can also share ideas, and possibly clothes!4.Why did the author accept the challenge of not buying clothes for one year?A.She accepted the challenge to satisfy her friend.B.She was concerned about the threat of fashion industry.C.She thought this would solve the problem of pollution.D.She had had enough of her deep connection with fashion.5.How did the author feel when told it would be “cheaper to buy new”?A.Shocked.B.Discouraged.C.Frightened.D.Confused. 6.What does the number “30” in paragraph 6 mean?A.The author has been sticking to a 30-item clothing limit.B.A piece of clothing of good quality can be worm at least 30 times.C.The author would wear a piece of clothing 30 times for environmental reasons.D.If a piece of clothing was worn 30 times, no carbon emission would be produced. 7.What is paragraph 7 mainly about?A.Suggestions the author gives to readers.B.The role of friends in achieving success.C.Uniqueness of the author's own experience.D.The change in the way the author views fashion.Have you ever forgotten a lunch date and stood up a good friend? This can be embarrassing and might indicate that your memory isn’t as sharp as before. How can we improve our memory? According to Charan Ranganath’s book, Why We Remember, there are many strategies.Taking good care of our physical bodies will improve our brain health generally, and so improve memory, says Ranganath. But we can also use the nature of memory to make certain memories stand out.Events are more memorable when they are novel. So, if we want to draw on a memory later, we can focus more on unexpected things in an experience. For example, going to a new restaurant with your partner will make the experience more memorable than going to one where you often dine. When it comes to learning, we can use special tricks. For example, we can use the phrase“King Philip came over for good spaghetti (意大利面)” to remember biological classification: kingdom (界), phylum (门), class (纲), order (目), family (科), genus (属), species (种).However, memory is not just about recalling. It is subjective and can change over time because our brains reconstruct memories each time we recall them. “Each time we revisit the past in our minds, we bring present information that can invisibly, and even dramatically change our memories,” says Ranganath.Factors like how recently something happened, how much something is repeated, and how we are feeling at the time will change how well we recall a memory. Also, the people around us can affect our memory for an event, by either sharing their own memory or by their expectations of how an event should be remembered. That’s why two people witnessing a street fight may see different things occurring, but eventually come to have similar memories about what happened. Their memories influence each other, more so if they talk it through after the fact. While we can use our memory to remember important lessons from life, we must also be humble. By understanding the way memory works, we can learn to strengthen it for the things we need to know and to avoid some of the pitfalls.8.Which of the following actions can enhance the memorability of an event?A.Repeating a familiar routine.B.Experiencing something new.C.Engaging in physical activities.D.Focusing on everyday occurrences. 9.Why does the author mention “King Pilip came over for good spaghetti”?A.To highlight the unreliability of our memory.B.To illustrate how easily memories are forgotten.C.To demonstrate a memory aid technique for recalling.D.To help readers remember the order of biological classification.10.What can we learn about the process of recalling memories from paragraph 6?A.Memories change our feelings when recalled.B.Memories remain permanently fixed over time.C.Memories become more detailed with recalling.D.Memories may change after the event is discussed.11.What might be the best title for the passage?A.Why do we forget important dates?B.How do we reconstruct memory over time?C.How can we improve and understand our memory?D.Why do we remember certain events more than others? The conventional language of career success moves in only one direction: up. If you really succeed, you reach the top. But there is another type of career path. Sideways moves without a promotion or a pay rise, can be a benefit to employees and organizations alike.A study carried out by Donald Sull of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his co-authors in 2021 found that the availability of lateral (横向的) career opportunities has a marked impact on keeping employees. When they decided whether to stay in the company or not, chances to move sideways were two and a half times more important than pay. Another paper, by Xin Jin of the University of South Florida and Michael Waldman of Cormell University, concluded that lateral moves did not just benefit organizations: employees who experienced them were more likely to be promoted and to enjoy higher wage growth later in their careers than employees who did not. You can move up by first moving sideways. The crab-like (螃蟹般的) career has other things going for it. One is that it is a good way to learn new things. As hiring processes increasingly emphasize skills, employers are likely to put comparatively less emphasis on CVs and comparatively more weight on what you know. Messrs Jin and Waldman reason that the upper ranks of companies tend to be people whose capabilities are broad, not deep; that may explain why lateral moves are good for promotion prospects. Along with skills come contacts. Transferring between teams usually means building a bigger internal network. Opening the door to more lateral moves is partly a practical matter. Some bigger employers have “internal talent marketplaces” in which employees can find and apply for jobs elsewhere in the company; smaller firms have fewer such opportunities to offer.Embracing sideways movement also requires the right attitude. Lots of managers like to keep talent to themselves, at the expense of workers and firms. And moving sideways still has less cachet(声望) than moving upwards. Most people find it not so easy to accept.12.How does the author develop paragraph 2?A.By telling personal stories.B.By providing research findings.C.By comparing different career paths.D.By making remarks on scientific reports.13.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean?A.Lateral moves involve gaining new skills.B.Lateral moves are mainly for networking purposes.C.Transferring between teams leads to a larger network.D.Contacts are more important than skills in lateral moves.14.What do many managers think of lateral career moves?A.They are a way to keep talent within the company.B.They are seen as a threat to the manager’s own positions.C.They could potentially lead to talent loss within the team.D.They could contribute to the company's growth in the long run.15.Who may embrace lateral moves?A.Bosses who value short-term profits.B.Employees who are eager for more skills.C.Managers who appreciate long-term stability.D.Job hunters who are interested insmaller firms. There’s a belief that it is inadvisable to have plants in the bedroom. The concern is about how plants breathe. While plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen in the day, at night this is the opposite. 16 But to tell whether sharing our bedroom with our plants is a risk to health, we have to consider three things.17 This is tricky to answer as it depends on everything from species to light levels and even room temperature, Also, there’s not much research on the exact measurements in indoor settings. Thankfully, in 2015, researchers at Turkey’s Kastamonu University found that houseplants like ficus (榕树) and yuccas (丝兰), when sealed (密封) in glass boxes, absorb between six and eight times as much CO2in the day as they emit at night. This results in a significant net reduction over a full day.Secondly, we should compare the impact of plants on air quality with that of other potential competitors, such as a partner, A single human breath contains around 40,000 ppm of CO2, more than 10 times the effect a plant could have in 8 hours. 18 Also, consider this. Indoor plants grow in less light than they would ideally get in nature. So, they photosynthesize (光合作用) at a lower rate. This further reduces their impact on air quality. Finally, it is obvious that we don’t live in the sealed boxes in which these studies are carried out. 19 Even our movements can influence its flow.In conclusion, the plant effect in our homes is very small in many ways. 20 If sleeping near plants were bad for your health, camping in a forest would be definitely deadly. A.Firstly, how do plants breathe at night?B.So enjoy houseplants whenever you like.C.Firstly, do plants emit more CO2 at night?D.Camping can be a good escape if you are worried.E.This means they compete with us for air when we sleep.F.Indoor air is constantly exchanged through doors and windows.G.So you might want to send your partner away before your plants.二、完形填空You keep secrets from each other; you keep secrets from yourselves. From the classic tales of Shakespeare that teach us about the complexities of human nature, to the modern novels that reflect the struggles and triumphs of contemporary society, students delve into these pages with eager anticipation. In Mrs. Li’s English class, the focus is not just on memorizing grammar rules or analyzing sentence structures. It’s about engaging with the text, understanding the characters’ motivations, and empathizing with their experiences. The classroom buzzes with discussions as students share their interpretations and insights, fostering a love for literature that transcends the boundaries of language learning. This semester’s English curriculum includes a diverse range of genres and themes, designed to challenge and inspire students. From historical fiction that transports them to different eras, to science fiction that sparks their imagination about the future, each book is a treasure trove of ideas andemotions.Third Question: Reading ComprehensionRead the following excerpt from one of the books being studied in Mrs. Li’s class and answer the questions that follow.Excerpt:“As the sun set over the rolling hills, the protagonist, Emma, stood at the edge of the cliff, her heart heavy with uncertainty. She had always been the one to make decisions with ease, but now, faced with a choice that would change the course of her life, she found herself paralyzed with fear. The sea below her, vast and unpredictable, mirrored her inner turmoil. Should she stay and fight for what she believed in, or should she sail away into the unknown, hoping for a better future?”1.What emotion is Emma experiencing in the excerpt? Provide evidence from the textto support your answer.Answer: Emma is experiencing uncertainty and fear. Evidence: “her heart heavy with uncertainty” and “she found herself paralyzed with fear.”2.What metaphor is used in the passage to describe Emma’s state of mind? Its vastness and unpredictability reflect the overwhelming nature of the choices she faces and her inability to see a clear path forward.3.How does the setting (the sunset over the rolling hills and the sea below) contributeto the mood of the scene?Answer: The setting creates a sense of grandeur and isolation, enhancing the sense of drama and emotional intensity in the scene. The sunset adds a touch of melancholy, reflecting Emma’s heavy heart, while the sea below symbolizes the vastness of the challenges she faces.4.Based on the excerpt, speculate on Emma’s eventual decision and provide a briefrationale for your prediction.Answer: It is difficult to predict Emma’s decision definitively without further context, but given her state of mind and the imagery used, it is possible that she may choose to face her fears and stay to fight for what she believes in.
