Book1Unit9 Is there life on Earth?Teaching Hours: 50 minutesStudents’ Level:freshmen of non-English majors in the 1st semester.Teaching Objectives:1.About the warming-up, get students know something about environmentpollution and protection.2.About background knowledge, get students know some information about theeight planets in solar system especially the Venus and the Earth.3.About the global reading, students are supposed to have a good understanding ofthe text, not only capable of finding out answers about comprehension questions but also able to summarize the main idea of the text.4.About the classroom presentation, students are to practice their spoken Englishthrough a given topic.Key Teaching Points:1. Bad effects of environment pollution and some ways of environment protection.2. The development, structure and the main idea of the story.Teaching Procedures:Part I Warm-up Questions (10mins)Ask students some questions as a lead-in to the text.1. Women used to be referred to as the weaker sex. What do you think?2. Do you think there is real equality between the sexes in present-day China?3. Who is the heroine you admire most? Give your reasons.Part II Background information (10mins)1. Eight Planets in the Solar SystemThey are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.2. VenusVenus is the second planet in distance from the sun and nearest to the Earth of all the planets in the solar system. Except for the sun and the moon, Venus is the brightest object in the sky. The planet is called “the morning star” when it appears in the east in the sunrise, and “the evening star” when it is in the west at sunset. The surface temperature of Venus averages about 475 degrees centigrade and its atmosphere is about 95% carbon dioxide (CO2). Oxygen is rare there. The high temperature and near absence of oxygen on Venus make it unlikely that life as we know it could exist there. It is satirically interesting that Art Buchwald has chosen the planet Venus as the setting for his story. His satire is most deeply felt when he has the Venusian professor say that if the Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then they can live anywhere else.3. EarthThe earth is the third planet in the system and the moon is always circling around it. It looks like a big blue marble; from high above the Earth and from the moon, the planet gleams and shines. It’s really a beautiful planet, but her beauty is not only because of the view, but also her vitality. The earth, the planet we human have been living on for thousands of years, is the only planet whose environment is suitable for creatures in the solar system. The earth is the cradle of life. It’s high time that we took actions to protect our planet. Part Three Global Reading (20mins)1. Introductory RemarksThis is a science fiction story, isn’t it? The title “Is there life on Earth?” produces a strong air of humor, arousing readers’interest immediately. Surely, you will enjoy your reading.1) Questions about the Text① What caused the excitement on the planet Venus? For the first time Venusian Scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.②What led the Venusian scientists to believe that there’s no life on Earth? For one thing, Earth’s surface in the area of Manhattan is composed of solid concrete and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”③Why does professor Zog think it impossible to land a flying saucer on Earth without its being smashed? There’re metal particles that move along certain paths. They emit gases, make noise and keep crashing into each other. There are so many of these paths and so many metal particles that it is impossible to land a flying saucer without being smashed by one.2) Structure of the TextWhile global reading, students should be able to work out the structure of the text. Part I (Para 1-3)A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.Part II (Para 4-15)Reasons why there’s no life on EarthP art III (Para 9-10)Decisions that they would proceed their flying saucer program.3) The Main Idea of the StoryThe author has meant this essay to appear as a piece of science fiction, a story taking place on the planet Venus. It is written from the point of view of “Venusians”who are exploring the possibility of life on Earth. On a press conference held at the Venus Institute of technology, professor Zog declared that there’s no life on Earth because of various problems found on Earth such as too much solid concrete, deadly atmosphere, and polluted water. In this way, the author implies that pollution on our earth is very severe, and it’s high time we did something to stop it.Part Four Classroom presentation (10 mins)One or two students are expected to give a classroom presentation on the given topic of “environment problems of today's China (such as the dust storm in Aksu Region).”Example:Dust storms can carry large amounts of dust, which can sweep across whole Aksu Region in April and May.Dust storms have also been shown to increase the spread of disease across the world. Virus spores in the ground are blown into the atmosphere by the storms with the minute particles and interact with urban air pollution. In addition, dust storms also reduce visibility affecting aircraft and road transportation. Many people are hurt during dust storms by automobile accident. The effects of dust storms can be reduced by using environmental control strategies. Take appropriate control of dust raising factors such as increasing the vegetation cover where possible. It helps in stabilization of the soil, sand dunes and form windbreaks。

In order to bring these students back to their study from online activities like computer games, chatting etc., colleges are now taking preventive measures. Such measures include limiting students on computer hours, programming warnings on computer screens, creating workshops on the use of computers, and even involving the subject in orientation courses. At the University of California’s Berkeley campus, students are so addicted to cyber relationships that they forget their learning or in some cases, even get cheated out of money. It is really piteous that they feel lonely on the vast campus and consider the World Wide Web as the only safe connection to the world. And according to an examination of the dropouts made at Alfred University, the dropouts are found to have the common feature of excessive logging in, particularly late at night.Having realized the negative impact campus computers could have on students in their course work, American universities are now working to change the situation. Alfred University, for instance, has planned to warn the incoming freshmen of the dangers of excessive use of computers and keep a close watch on computer addicts on campus.II. PreviewWhat an exciting time to be alive! A new century lies before us like an artist’s sketch book with hardly a mark in it. What will we do with these blank pages? What will our footprints show 100 years from now? How will we handle our unique opportunity to make our world a better place? Will we also fill the pages of this century with blood and tears and horrible wars, destroying our enemies or ourselves with guns and drugs or germs or worse? Or will we choose to unite in a common cause to save this earth home we share and rid it of all its ills? Will we choose to fill our days with acts which are beautiful, true, honest, just, pure, good and worthy of honour? For, how we image this new century is most certainly a choice. We will create our future based on what we do today. “Look well therefore to this day,” as the famous Sanskrit poem advises.1.Your FutureThe future does not determine itself. The actions of the present determine the future.EdwardCornish, editor of " The Futurist" magazine published by the World Future Society, says:"The responsibility we have for the future begins when we recognise that we ourselves create the future -- that the future is not something imposedupon us by fate or other forces beyond our control. Weourselves build the future both through what we do and what we do not do."2. Your BrainYour brainwaves may be checked to see whether you are busy, tired or doing your work properly.Psychologist Arthur F. Kramer tested volunteersworkingonarithmetic problems. He could predict their performance from the strength of the brain's electrical activity measured through the head. The future? Bosses could measure brain activity to learn worker quality. Frequent computer analyses could tell whether workers, like air traffic controllers, are seeing all activity clearly enough to monitor it properly.3. Your DoctorMoreandmore, doctors will use visual information about your condition from computers, instead of textbooks, for diagnosis and treatment.Home computers will enable you to answer interactive questions about your health and show the alternative results should you act in a certain way.4. Your CarCars will be almost entirely controlled by computers. To payfor costs, cars will be billedfor using high-speed toll roads. Computers will record the passage of the car and automatically take the money from the owner's computer bank account.Computers will show drivers maps of districts the car is crossing on a small screen in the car.Computers will diagnose any problems with the puter connections will list the nearest places of repair, tell the cost of new parts and the place where they can be bought.5. The Computer-HomeMore than half of the home computers sold in the United States in recent years will become essential to home life in the West. Future tasks computers already do at home include:Computers turn on the lights, heating and essential household services before people arrive home from work. Computers control cooking, hot water, security.Computers enable homework assignments to be done with worldwide resources, using sites like museums and science facilities around the world. Homework help can come equally from the local library, or libraries and databases in places as far apart as NewYorkand London, or from teachers and fellow students around the globe. Many shoppers order groceries at home through Internet suppliers and have purchases delivered.6. The WorkplaceThe changing face of work and the work-place is one of the most widespread influences in Western society.Women now form more than half the workers; the percentage is rising as they startup small businesses of their own, often working from home.People are changing careersonaverage every ten years now, instead of staying in a job for life.Increases in information and knowledge-based businesses are reducing levels of middle management.Top managers get all the information needed to work together with front-line staff. Specialists are becoming more important than general workers.7. The EnvironmentProtection of the environment used to be the concern of special groups. Now governments and businesses realise bad air and water pollution affect everyone, making it difficult for cities to survive and for businesses to make a profit.London, England's biggest city, often suffers from air pollution which causes more than 1,000 deaths a year. Especially the very young, the elderly and cigarette smokers are at high risk. Many European countries and the United States check vehicles for gas and smoke emissions to make sure the levels are below the permittedoutput. For example, Germany has 600 sites that monitor carbonmonoxide.8. Your HealthPhysical fitness and healthy lifestyles have changedfrom fashion and hobby for a few to official policy for many businesses and governments.Smoking cigarettes is undersiege as a habit. Smoking advertising is banned in many areas.Although pills for tension, heart conditions, weight and other life-threatening conditions are prescribed by Western doctors, most now require patients to develop healthy lifestyles by changing diets and exercising more to keep well.Words: 700(Trends for the 21st Century)What problems will our world encounter in the next 1000 years? Social scientists and economists, farming experts and environmentalists pose this question and examine data, information from surveys. In every field, experts examine changes to understand the state of the field. To understand a country's economy, economists check growth in an industry such as steel. To understand the state of business, they may look at the number of building permits for new houses. The information learned shows increases or decreases. Important trends emerge in each field.PopulationPopulation is important to every person on Earth. People tend to live longer in most places. In Central Europe, however, life span is dropping because health care is not what it was a few years ago. Factors affecting general health include excessive smoking and drinking of alcohol and polluted water supplies. The population explosion on our planet has been increasing atanalarmingrate but the percentage of increase is decreasing. One out of every five people on Earth is Chinese, yet China's growth rate has slowed. As the number of women going to school increases, the growth rate declines.Food Production;[The production of grain seems to be decreasing mainly because of climate changes. Natural disasters like storms and floods have washedaway many crops. With less land for cattle and sheep, less meat like beef and lamb is being produced. Production of chicken, turkey and fish has increased, however. The amount of ocean fish has not increased, but fish farm production has.Fish farming is very efficient:producing a kilogram of fish utilizes less than 2 kilograms of feed, but it takes 2.2 kilograms of feed to produce 1 kilogram of chicken. One kilogram of beef requires 7 kilograms of grain. People, therefore, may eat less red meat in the future and more fish. EnergyUsing fossil fuels for energy has not altered very much but wind energy use is increasing significantly. Denmark,Germany, the Netherlands,Britain, and America have large wind power projects. China, India,Mexico,New Zealand, and the Ukraine are also developing wind power.Energy from nuclear power plants is steadily increasing but the problem of dangerous waste limits growth in many regions.Because many electrical companies consider nuclear energy too expensive, the trend is toward less dangerous sources of energy. While natural gas use increases, use of coal as fuel is decreasing. Naturalgas, an outstanding energy fuel, can be used to heat homes, make electricity, and power cars.EconomicsAs countries around the world trade more with one another, more products are available. But the fast development of world economy will bring about many new problems. With fewer trees, the paper industry is producing more paper from recycled materials but, unfortunately, damages the planet. The paper-making process uses large amounts of water, burns fossil fuels and produces much chemical waste. Automobile production is down; bicycle production is up. Crowded highways, high gasoline costs, and ease of bicycling are three reasons for this change.HealthThree major health trends exist as we begin the new century. Health care is better than ever. Medical research breakthroughs include finding tumors early, and saving lives through CAT scans and surgery. Surviving cancer is a new trend. HIV/AIDS, however, is spreading quickly all over the world. The third major trend is toward an attitude of indifference. People seem to have forgotten ways to keep diseases under control. Although medical science had achieved control over several dangerous diseases, some are returning. For instance, tuberculosis, once a dangerous killer, was cured. Now the disease is appearing again.NaturePollution continues to affect our forests and water. The bird population is decreasing because of oil spills and spreading cities. Seas and oceans are changing. Trees are cut down, more soil washes away, and water quality is affected. Many of these trees are in our rain forests where thick areas of plants and trees, home for many birds and animals, are disappearing. ConclusionOur challenges for this new century are clear. The problems of numerousinhabitants on this small planet will continue to be important to each of us. These challenges show that all of us need to be involvedin solving the problems. May we find new ways to accomplish the task. Words: 696Americans in the future will probably not live as Americans do today. Fusion (核聚变) power will be capable of producing energy without limits while saving natural resources. People may live well past a hundred years, be equipped with plastic body parts, and eat man-made foods. Space travelers will walk on the planets. These factors of life were science fiction images a few decades ago. Today such events are already discussed as if real. How do people image life in the United States in the future? Below aresome predictions made by Richard N. Farmer, who gave his light-hearted opinion of the "World of 2084."Since no one wants to do the dirty, uninteresting factory-line work any more, we decide not to. So we take some chimpanzees (黑猩猩), or if we really want some strength, some great apes (猿), do a bit of scientific engineering here and there, and we create some animals, which are made for the factory line. They work their eight hours a day, and don't mind the repetition a bit. . . .Jack Baxter, a common American of 2084, glanced at his stop-watch. He was slowing down; he could only run the kilometer in four minutes flat now, and when he was 80, he could do it in three-fifty. But, being 140 years old made a difference, regardless of what his doctor said. Jack had received his first cancer shot in 1981; he had received his man-made heart in 2014, before they really got those human ones perfected, so he wasn't a very good example of a complete human. But he felt pretty good he had been one of the lucky ones, who had received his shots to make him young again before he turned 40, so he was still a young-looking fellow. Of course, he looked old in his world, since no one got much beyond 30-looking any more. And, of course, he would die right now, fellows pushing 200 were in poor shape and kicking off . ... Death used to be a pretty simple thing. Body processes stopped, and you left us. But nowadays even, it is not uncommon for a person to bebrought back with heart massage (按摩) perhaps a full hour or more after he's "dead." By 2084, if we can store a dead body in a cold refrigerator room soon enough, lots of people who now would die may not. Now we all die, sooner or later; maybe by 2084, we won't die until we are good and ready. And that would be a new freedom indeed. Johnny, who's almost 10, can't read, but no one is worried. Indeed, Johnny has been going to school since he was 3, but it hasn't been the kind of school that we are familiar with. The kids learn all sorts of things about living together and getting along with each other, but nothing about school subjects. You see, we have figured out that age ten is about the time that a child can really put reading and mathematical skills to use. So, on his tenth birthday, Johnny goes to the brain-control center. He sits for an hour or so under a machine that looks something like a hair-dryer, with him attached to it. When he finishes, the entire reading, writing, and math patterns he needs to know are impressed right on his brain. Why fool around for years drilling kids, when all education really is made up of is a set of very mixed brain patterns? Just add them straight onto the brain, and you save lots of time and money. And if you want to teach any other kind of skills, like electrical theory for electricity workers, well, there's a pattern for that too.Words: 611。

大学新视野英语课程说课稿

大学新视野英语课程说课稿

大学新视野英语课程说课稿大学新视野英语课程说课稿I’m XX from XXX University. Today my presentation of teaching design is Unit 1 in New Horizon English Course The Second Book.1. Analysis of the Teaching MaterialNew Horizon English Course (Reading and Writing) is a book designed for English course for Vocational college students in our country. This book, which focuses on students’ ability to express and practical skills, has a new teaching concept and content. And it also follows the principles of “giving priority to practice, taking enough to use”. Therefore, in order to develop students’ ability of using English, teachers should be creative and arouse students’ enthusiasm to study when they designed the teaching activities. This lesson is section A of Unit 1 in the second book of New Horizon English Course(Reading and Writing). This unit mainly talks about symbols of culture. Based on this theme, this unit can be divided into section A, section B and section C, and every part has its ownfocus. The passage in section A is about the first McDonald’s restaurant which is closely related to American culture. Through studying this passage, students will acquire some basic understanding about the history an d current state of the first McDonald’s restaurant.2. Analysis of StudentsAfter learning experience in last semester, students’ English level has been improved. They can retell the text by words and expressions they have learnt. Now they can communicate with others using simple sentences on the topic they are familiar with, but they need to pay attention to the accuracy and fluency. When listening, they can understand simple conversation and statement, but they can’t retell accurately what they hear. They can do simple English-Chinese translation. As of pronunciation, they still have pronunciation problems to be corrected.3. Teaching AimsAccording to the teaching aims in Basic Requirements for College English and understanding of the text, I set two teaching objects as follows:(1)Knowledge: master the new words, phrases, sentences and grammars; understand the text; enlarge the vocabulary; strengthen the basic knowledge of the language(2)Ability: develop students’ ability to listen, speak and read, in order to make them use these practical skills4. Focuses and DifficultiesFocus of this text is to master the usage of words and phrases and use them.Difficult point of this text is to master expression about expressing their own opinions. Students can express their own ideas about the topics they are familiar with by using words and phrases in this text.5. Teaching MethodsSituational Teaching Approach: Language can be meaningful in certain context. Therefore, I create several contexts through multi-media courseware in order to make students learn language in real language environment. This will help the student learn English in practice.Analysis and explanation: After students read the passage, the teacher make explanation, and give some directions, extension in meaning, comments and statements.Task-drive approach: this way makes students learn useful knowledge by accomplishing some tasks, and stimulate their interests to study.6. Teaching Process(1) Leading-ina. Free talk: make students do free talk on the basis of two questions on Page 2 of the textbook. The teacher asks several students: “McDonald’s and KFC, which do you like better? And why?” This procedure lets the students use what they have learnt in actual dialogue. At the same time, this can lead to the new content we are going to learn. So this step can be taken as a stone killing two birds.b. Background information: in this text, it refers to three persons: Ray Kroc and McDonald’s. The three persons are relat ed to the establishment of McDonald’s and why McDonald’s wants to destroy the first McDonald’s restaurant. Therefore, before we begin totalk about the text, the teacher will introduce Ray Kroc and McDonald’s and show their pictures to students through multimedia courseware.(2) Giving a lecturea. Teachers will ask some questions for warming up. On one hand, we can know how students understand the text; on the other, we can lead the students in quickly.Warming up questions:①Who founded McDonald’s?②Why was the restaurant called MaDonald’s?③Different opinions held by the Downey residents and McDonald’s mangersb. Ask students to divide the text in to three parts, and let them summarize the main idea of each part: Para. 1(Introduction) Presenting two opposing attitudes towards the first McDonald’s restaurant: saving it, or tearing it downPara. 2-11(body): Reasons for saving it:(1)It is a cultural symbol.(2)It gives people good memories.(3)McDonald’s is trying to change the histor y.Reasons for tearing it down:(1)It was damaged/beyond repair.(2)It is losing money at that location.Para. 12(Conclusion): Everyone hopes that the two opposing parties will find peace.将以上内容用多媒体呈现给学生。

Text Reading Para. 3 As a university student, I’m very interested in what factors separate outstanding students from ones infinitely less accomplished. Instead of sitting back and hating successful students, I made it my mission to investigate the mysterious causes of their greatness. And the fruit of my analysis, after speaking to many top students and their professors, is a group of tips that anyone can use to awaken greatness up within himself and reach new peaks of excellence.
