Task 2
Use the following sentence patterns and the words or phrases from Task 1 to talk about the pictures on Page 66.
A. Some … while others … B. Unlike …
Reading A
Task 2 Text
But when I stopped watching television completely several months ago, I found that I had become a more reflective person, simply because I had more time to think. Television had stopped stuffing its ideas into my head. I was pondering my childhood, and to my dismay, I found that it could be summed up adequately in one sentence: “I watched a lot of TV.” And I wasted too much of my youth that I cannot have back. I will never be more imaginative, vigorous than I was in my childhood.
Task 2 Text
I grew up a couch potato. I owned several couch potato manuals, and can still clearly recall some suggestions outlined within. I mention these because, looking back, it seems I hardly read anything else at all—I watched TV almost seven hours a day.

Starting out—Task 1
The Tell-tale Heart
The unnamed narrator of the story is a “dreadfully nervous” character who disputes the allegation that he might be crazy. He contends that his disposition arises from a heightening of the senses: “Above all was the sense of hearing acutely.” The narrator provides care to a wealthy elderly man. For some inexplicable reason, the narrator becomes obsessed with the diseased eye of the old man. The narrator likens it to a vulture’s eye and becomes so haunted by the “Evil Eye” that he decides to murder the old man. He meticulously plans the murder. After one week of preparation, the narrator charges into the old man’s bedroom after midnight and kills him using the heavy bed the victim had been sleeping in, crushing and suffocating him. Even after the murder, the victim’s heart continues beating for many minutes. The narrator carefully dismembers the body in a tub. He conceals all the pieces under the floor boards. At four o’clock in the

Friendship is an important part of our lives. It is a relationship of mutual affection between people. In the fast-paced modern society, the value of friendship is often overlooked. However, it is crucial for our emotional well-being and personal growth. In this unit, we will explore the theme of friendship and learn how to build and maintain meaningful relationships with others.First and foremost, it is essential to understand the qualities of a good friend. A good friend is someone who is trustworthy, supportive, and understanding. They are there for you in times of need and celebrate your successes with you. They listen to you without judgment and offer their help and advice when necessary. In return, you should also be a good friend to others by showing empathy, respect, and loyalty.Furthermore, communication is key in any friendship. It is important to express your thoughts and feelings openly and honestly. Good communication helps to resolve conflicts and misunderstandings, and it also strengthens the bond between friends. In addition, spending quality time together is crucial for building and maintaining friendships. Whether it's going out for a meal, watching a movie, or simply having a heart-to-heart conversation, the time spent together helps to create lasting memories and deepen the connection between friends. Moreover, it is important to be a good listener in a friendship. Sometimes, all a friend needs is a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. By being present and attentive, you show that you care and value the relationship. It is also important to be supportive and encouraging towards your friends. Whether they are facing challenges or pursuing their dreams, your support and encouragement can make a significant difference in their lives. In addition, it is important to be understanding and forgiving in a friendship. No one is perfect, and conflicts and misunderstandings are inevitable in any relationship. It is important to approach these situations with empathy and understanding, and be willing toforgive and move forward. By doing so, you can strengthen the bond with your friends and create a more positive and harmonious relationship. In conclusion, friendship is a valuable and essential part of our lives. It brings joy, support, and companionship, and contributes to our overall happiness and well-being. By understanding the qualities of a good friend, communicating effectively, spending quality time together, being a good listener, and being supportive and understanding, we can build and maintain meaningful friendships that enrich our lives. Let's cherish and nurture our friendships, for they are truly precious.。
全新版大学英语(第二版)综合教程_第四册_Unit 5 Never Judge by Appearances——A Friendin NeedA Friend in Need(by Somerset Maugham)For thirty years now I have been studying my fellowmen. I do not know very much about them. I shrug my shoulders when people tell me that their first impressions of a person are always right. I think they must have small insight or great vanity. For my own part I find that the longer I know people the more they puzzle me.
//我最老的朋友们,恰恰是我可以说一点也不了解的人。
These reflections have occurred to me because I read in this morning's paper that Edward Hyde Burton had died at Kobe. He was a merchant and he had been in business in Japan for many years. I knew him very little, but he interested me because once he gave me a great surprise. Unless I had heard the story from his own lips, I should never have believed that he was capable of such an action. It was more startling because both in appearance and manner he suggested a very definite type. Here if ever was a man all of a piece. He was a tiny little fellow, not much more than five feet four in height, and very slender, with white hair, a red face much wrinkled, and blue eyes. I suppose he was about sixty when I knew him. He was always neatly and quietly dressed in accordance with his age and station.

5 Pizza did not find its way into the United States until after the end of the Second World War. At that time, U.S. soldiers returned home. Along with their return, they also brought back an appetite for the pizza they had eaten and enjoyed in Italy. Pizza parlors began to spring up in more and more places as hungry people started to eat this one-dish food on a regular basis.
