Teaching aims:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. e xpress their own ideas about sports and sports players freely;

2.learn more words and expressions related to Olympic Games;

3. e nlarge their vocabulary by applying the rules of making compound words.

2. H elp students enrich their vocabulary of some sports;

3. L ead students to master the rules of forming compound words.

Teaching procedures:

Step I . Lead in

1. A sk students three questions about sports and choose three students to give their opinions.Q1: Do you like sports? Why?

Q2: What is your favorite sport?

Q3: Why do you think sport is so popular?

Sample answer:

S1: I like sports and my favorite sport is playing basketball. In my opinion, playing basketball canmake me feel relaxed and I can become stronger.

2. Make a summary of students ' answers.

Step n . Presentation

1.Show students a group of pictures about common sports on the screen.

Lead student to go through the pictures quickly.

Sports are: table tennis, badminton, football and tennis.

2.Showstudentsanotherfourkindsofsportsindetailandguidestudentstohaveanund erstanding of the sports one by one.

P1: golf—There are 9 or 18 holes in a game of golf.

P2: discus—The discus involves throwing a flat, round object.

P3: archery—In archery you need to know how to use a bow and arrow.

P4: long jump—In the long jump, competitors try to jump as far forward as possible.

During this period, I will ask students some simple questions to lead them to master the basicknowledge.

Step皿.Practice

1.Show students more pictures about sports events in the Olympic Games on the screen andlead them to learn them.

2. Lead students to read the instruction of Part B on Page 27 and explain it carefully.

3. Give students about 5 minutes to fill in the chart below.

4. C heck answer with students and show the correct answer on the screen.

Athletics: discus throw, 20km walk, 110m hurdles, high jump.

Water sports: springboard diving, 200m butterfly, water polo, platform diving.

Step W. Discussion

1.Show two pictures about 2008 Beijing Olympic Games on the screen and play a short videoabout Beijing Olympic Games to students.

2. Ask students two questions about Beijing Olympic Games.

Q1: How do you feel the Beijing Olympic Games?

Q2: Who is your favorite sports star in the Olympic Games? Why?

3. Divide students into groups of four and give two minutes to have a discussion.

4. Choose two groups to give their opinions.

5. Make comments on students ' answers and write the key words on the blackboard.

Step V . Compound words.

1.Show a picture about Liu Xiang and have a short discussion about him.

Q1: Do you know who he is?Liu Xiang.

Q2: Why is he so famous?He was the first Asian to win a gold medal for the men' s 11-0metrehurdles in the Olympic Games.

Q3:Whatisrequiredtobeasportspersonlikehim?Hemustbehard-workingandwell- trained.

2.Let students read a short dialogue about Liu Xiang on Page 26.

3.Introduce the compounds and its basic formations.

To form compound adjectives:
