AFive of the most beautiful villagesSidi Bou Said in TunisiaThis village seems to disappear into the sky. All the houses ar e painted white and the skies are clear. It's not surprising that the life here is very relaxing, and it is also home to plenty of c afes and art galleries.Wengen in SwitzerlandDo you ever wonder how the world was before cars were inve nted? The village called Wengen might just help you realize y our dreams. Cars have been banned from this area for close t o 100 years, and everything looks like it was taken right out of Heidi. The locals have kept their Swiss culture undamaged. Shirakawa-go in JapanThis village is certainly known for its unusual houses with trian gular roofs which seem to resemble hands joined in prayer. It' s designed to keep snow from piling up on top of houses. The se houses are the symbol of the area but there aren't many of them left anymore.Eze in FranceFrance in itself is pretty, but its most attractive village is Eze. This community seems to be frozen in time. This village is the perfect melting pot of cultures because of its closeness to Nic e. During the Middle Ages, it was desired by invaders(侵略者),and while this was a cause of sadness for the local people in the past, today the village enjoys its rich heritage(遗产).The architecture here is so diverse.Bibury in EnglandLocated on the River Coln in the West of England, Bibury was described as "the most beautiful village in England”. Honey-colored 17th-century stone cottages, the Church of St.Mary and a still-working 1902 farm are some of the ancient village’s must-sees. The most photographed spot is Arlington Row, which isa collection of 14th-century stone buildings.21.Where can visitors enjoy paintings?A.In Sidi Bou Said.B.In Shirakawa-go.C.In Wengen.D.In Eze.22. What's the similarity between Wengen and Bibury?A. They both sit by a long river.B. They both have an ancient view.C. They are home to many inventions.D. They are located in the same country.23. What do we know about Eze?A. Its people look sad.B. It forbids cars to enter.C. Its architecture is modern.D. It was attacked in the past.BIt is curious that Stephen Koziatek feels almost as though he has to explain about his efforts to give his students a better fut ure.Mr Koziatek is part of something pioneering. He is a teacher a t a New Hampshire high school where learning is not about b ooks and tests and rote memorization(死记硬背),but something practical. As Koziatek knows, there is learni ng in just about everything. Nothing is necessarily gained by forcing students to learn geometry at a desk. They can also le arn geometry by putting together a bicycle. But he's also found a kind of prejudice. Working with your han ds is seen as almost a mark of inferiority(低等).Schools in the family of vocational(职业的) education “have that opinion...that it's for kids who can't m ake it academically,” he says.On one hand, that viewpoint is a logical product of America's evolution. Manufacturing(制造业)is not the economic engine that it once was. The job securi ty that the US economy once offered to high school graduates has largely disappeared. More education is the new way. We want more for our kids, and rightfully so.But the headlong push into bachelor's degrees for all—and the devaluing of anything less—misses an important point: That's not the only thing the Ameri can economy needs. Yes, a bachelor’s degree opens more d oors. But even now, 54 percent of the jobs in the country are middle -skill jobs, such as construction and high-skill manufacturing, according to the National Skills Coalition. But only 44 percent of workers are adequately trained. There i s a gap in working-class jobs, but the workers who need those jobs most aren't e quipped to do them. Koziatek's Manchester School of Technol ogy (High School) is trying to fill that gap.Koziatek's school is a wake-up call. When education becomes one-size-fits-all, it risks overlooking a nation's diversity of gifts.24. What's the characteristic of Mr. Koziatek’s school?A. Paying attention to practical learning.B. Letting students do many tests.C. Encouraging students to read books.D. Forcing students to learn by rote.25. What does the underlined phrase "that viewpoint” in Parag raph 4 refer to?A. Vocational education is for academically challenged studen ts.B. Vocational education is undoubtedly a good choice.C. Not all students can be admitted to college.D. Not all students can do physical work.26. How are people reacting to the disappearance of manufac turing?A. They lower their expectations.B. They try to improve their skills.C. They turn to the government.D. They continue their education.27. What does the author think of the school's goal?A. It needs lots of effort.B. It is worth achieving.C. It is unpractical.D. It is adventurous.CWhen I was eleven, my parents gave me the first book I ever owned—“The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe”. I distinctly remember opening it, reading the first lines of "The Cask of Amontillado,” and re marking to myself, "So this is what reading is!”My delight was unbounded. Little did I know at the time that I was at the begin ning of a lifelong journey. So, if I read my first real book at the advanced age of 11, wha t was I reading before then? In a word, readers: relatively plotl ess, repetitive if well-intentioned attempts to teach children to recognize letters and their sounds and to build their vocabularies. Being a dutiful b oy, I went through the motions and I learned what words were. But I had no idea what writing was. Until Poe. In Poe's storie s, the sentences were more complex and stylish than anythin g I had ever read before.Poe, in short, was a start. My parents gave me that first book, but then I went off on my own. I liked science, which led me to discover Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Other writers followed quickly one after another: Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke. But I didn't limit myself to science fiction. Other title s that deeply impressed me early on, and which I have carried on my life's journey, include: “The Yearling," “Shane”“Ivanho e," “Of Mice and Men," "To Kill a Mocking bird," and “The Goo d Earth”.It went on from there. I became that kid who, long after his par ents told him to turn the lights off, hid under the covers with a flashlight and a book, his greatest fear of being discovered an d having his flashlight taken away. I realize that my parents m ust have known I was defying (违背) them. But in their wisdom they pretended to be ignorant of it. And so I owe my start as a reader to my parents.28. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?A. The author's good memories.B. The author's childhood before 11.C. The author's parents' reading habits.D. The author's affection for his first book.29. What was the influence of plotless reading on the author? He didn't accumulate enough vocabularies.B. He didn't know what real writing was.C. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Behind most of the bad things we do to our bodies as adults, eating more than we should is the idea we carry with us from childhood. On the one hand, we assume that we are indestructible. On the other, we think that any damage we impose on ourselves can be undone when we finally clean up our act.If the evidence for how wrong the first idea is isn't apparent when you stand naked in front of the mirror, just wait. But what if you eat right and drop all your bad habits? Is there still time to repair the damage? To a surprising degree, the answer is yes. Over the past five years, scientists have accumulated a wealth of data about what happens when aging people with bad habits decide to turn their lives around. The heartening conclusion: the body has an amazing ability to heal itself, provided the damage is not too great. The effects of some bad habits--smoking, in particular--can haunt you for decades. But the damage from other habits can be largely healed. “Any time you improve your behavior and make lifestyle changes, they make a difference from that point on”, says Dr. Jeffrey Koplan. “Maybe not right away. It's like slamming on the brakes. You do need a certain distance”.But the distance can be remarkably short. Consider the recent announcements from the front lines of medical research:--A study concluded that women who consume as little as two servings of fish a week cut their risk of suffering a stroke to half that of women who eat less than one serving of fish a month.--The day you quit smoking, the carbon monoxide levels in your body drop dramatically. Within weeks, your blood becomes less sticky and your risk of dying from a heart attack starts to decline。

Though only 5-foot-8 tall and 145 pounds, Rockne was a star player on Notre Dame's football team. During his years on the team, Notre Dame never lost a football game. After graduating in 1914, Rockne remained at Notre Dame as a chemistry instructor and assistant football coach. Say the elevator you’re in stops at a floor and the doors don’t open. It could be a power failure or an equipment failure. But getting out isn’t easy. Elevators are equipped with lots of features(特征)to keep the doors from opening freely or when they’re between floors.“What you’ll usually see is that the fire department, or sometimes the building worker will come and use some ways to get the people out while the problem is being worked on.” says Robert Solomon, the director of building and fire protection systems for the National Fire Protection Association. That’s where those small holes come in. Opening the doors requires a special tool. It is pushed into the door to release the landing door. Since the fire department began requiring them in the 1970s, manufacturers such as Otis and Schindler have equipped their elevators with them. The keys are usually held by a special number of people, such as an elevator worker or building assistant in charge. The fire department also requires that special access tools for each building be kept in a secure location such as a Knox Box that firefighters can open.“Fortunately, it’s rare that us ing the keys is necessary.” Solomon says.28. Why are elevators fixed with special features?A. To make sure of safety.B. To open the door easily.C. To increase of efficiency.D. To let the air in.29. What does the underlined word “them”in paragraph 4 probably refer to?A. Keys.B. Landing doors.C. Small holes.D. Tools.30. Where should special access tools be put?A. In an obvious place.B. In a safe spot.C. At the building corner.D. On the special shelf.31. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. The steps you escape from the trapped elevatorB. The right key elevators should be opened at onceC. The measures you should take in the trapped elevatorD. The real reason elevators have those small holesDA common argument for expanding renewable energy sources is that technologies such as solar panels (太阳板)release far less carbon dioxide than power plants(发电厂)that burn oil.Only about 3 percent of the Earth’s water is freshwater, most of which is frozen—That means only 0.8 percent of the planet’s water can be served for human use. Water is a necessary, but limited product. And nearly 1 billion people worldwide lack of fresh water. In the U.S., 45.3 percent of the freshwater is used to cool off thermoelectric (热电)power plants: nuclear reactors and plants that burn oil.To provide electricity for an average home, a nuclear power plant requires 615 gallons of cooling water a day, a coal-fired plant, 199 gallons per day, and a natural gas power plant, 114 gallons per day. Let’s look at how much water each power source takes to make one megawatt(兆瓦)-hour of electricity.Nuclear reactors are the highest, at 13,000 gallons. Then comes coal, natural gas. The water needed by solar panels is lower. These numbers only reflect operations to make electricity; they do not include water used to get the fuel or make the power. For example, fracking (水力压裂)can use hundreds of thousands of gallons each time to make a rock cracked to release natural gas. Large quantities of water becomes vapor. The rest is sent back to the environment, but some of that is fixed with chemicals, and most of it is hot, which can kill fish and other living things.Natural gas, coal and nuclear power plants ranked one, two and three in 2016, according to the total amount of U.S. electricity made in a year. And natural gas is projected to become even more important through 2050.To protect fresh water, it seems clear that the country should change toward renewables. This would make more freshwater for food production and human use.32.Which uses the most water to make electricity?A. Coal-fired plant.B. A natural gas power plant.C. Solar panels.D.A nuclear power plant.33.For what purpose does the author provide so many numbers?A. To provide proof to scientists.B. To state the fact of making electricity.C. To tell readers to treasure freshwater.D. To prove that non-renewable energy uses much more water.34.What suggestion does the author make in the passage?A. Fresh water should be protected.B. Renewable energy should be put into use.C. Non-renewable energy should use less water.D. People should save fresh water.35. What is the main idea of the text?A. Non-renewable energy pollutes environment.B. Renewable energy saves water.C. Electricity needs much water to make.D. Ways are listed to make electricity.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
